I was assigned to provide an evaluation of digitizing a collection. Just by chance I picked up this book in our library. I thought it was about imagery, but it is realy about what most people call digitization. This book has an very high information to fluff ratio. It is filled with pracital advice ranging from technical advice (image formats, digitization engines) to project organization tips. Although aimed at the library/archival community is is invaluable to anyone who has to digitize a large body of documents.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Fast Bytes Series
AUTHOR: Nina Martini
PUBLISHER: DataBecker
REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades

BOOK REVIEW: A small book but packed with so much information it is hard to know where to begin. Digital Photography begins by explaining data storage and transferring images. It goes on to explain color optimizing, printing and making a CD. There are notes and tips in yellow boxes through out the book to help the reader along.

To do all this, Digital Photography uses several programs such as:
1. ACDSee - [URL]
2. Paint Shop Pro - [URL]
3. Ulead Cool 360 - [URL]
4. Windows Movie Maker - this program comes in Windows ME and XP
5. Photo Flicks - [URL]
6. HTML Editor or Note Pad - comes with most systems
7. Outlook Express - or any email program

Digital Photography will walk you through the basics of all these programs. There are many other programs like these available but these trial versions will give you the basic principles of digital photography. Digital Photography will tell you how to use your camera and computer together to produce great pictures and even how to save it on CD or email them to share with others. For the small price tag of [price], you won't be disappointed with all the information you will have.

By far this is the very best choice!! This book is an excellent resource for all of us who are struggling with the painful details of making sense of equipment needs, sofware bundles and printing choices. The book offers the reader a quick and dirty tour of several applications providing exhilarating details that makes digital publishing look ridiculously simple. He cuts down to the chase and without hesitation provides the pros and cons on issues such as: image editing, typography, sofware choices and printing outcomes.

His writting is straight forward with clarity of thought, great depth, and good humor. If you are tired of reading books with lots of jargon and poor educational results, I suggest you consider making this book part of your library.

A well balanced book between concept and technical info
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-18
It is great book - simple enough to provide a good overview of making videos and detailed enough to help you understand the required technologies. It really is an excellent book and I highly recommend it to new video makers. I also use the book after I go "shopping" for equipment or software to see how it fits with the concepts put forward in the book. It has been a real help in making me a more thoughtful buyer as well as a better video maker. The book covers how to take good video shots, the equipment necessary to interface with your computer, and the software to edit your movies. All the information you need to get a quick start is in this book.
