Nothing to criticize in this book!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-22
Back in the early days of Microsoft Windows, it took a writer of Charles Petzold's expertise to make Windows programming possible for mere mortals. Sentence by sentence, program by program, chapter by chapter, Petzold made Windows programming make sense. And now the master turns his sights to graphics. I can't find a single word to criticize, not one error, not the smallest flaw to detract from this volume's perfection!

This guy really knows what he's talking about.
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-04
I have read a few things by Paul Thurrott in the past and found his work easily digestible and loaded with great examples. This book is no exception.
It was a gift, and even though I don't even run XP on my machine I would feel confident using XP tools to work with my digital media with this book by my side. The subject matter may be a little simple for the real tech heads out there, but for folks just starting to play with MP3s and digital imagery up to fairly advanced users looking for some excellent tips and tricks this is a great resource.
Pick it up and join the digital revolution!

Double bonus - I learned to type and use Word at the same time.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-29
This was one of the best books I've ever used. I learned to type using the live demonstrations and skillbuilding games in about 6 weeks. After that I learned the basics of Word so that I could type letters, reports, and other useful documents that I use in my daily life. When Alex Haley asked what he would have done differently when he wrote "Roots", he said "I would have typed faster".

Great Resource for Learning How to Apply More Advanced Tools in Excel
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-16
This is a very helpful resource to enable the beginning to immediate Excel user to apply some of the more advanced analytical tools and methods Excel provides. It takes you step by step through several exercises/projects in each chapter to build your skills and confidence.

Since the exercises are very practical, this book can also serve as a valuable reference. When you need to apply some techniques, formulas or functions that you may not have used in a while, you may forget a few things. The exercises you work through in the book can definitely help you out. Also, if you're still using Excel97 or Excel 2000, you will still find this book just as valuable as if you were using Excel 2002. Just about all of the exercises can be applied in either version. The author does point out where some features or methods might vary between the different versions.

Utilzing the guide to teach Kids and Adults
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-20
I was introduced to the Microsoft Office Guide when I became the Technology Teacher for 1st through 8th grades. The curriculm for 7th and 8th grade was to learn Excell and Access - which I had never used. Therefore, I opened the book, went through each step for both chapters on Database and Spreadsheet. The book was so well designed and organized in presenting and educating that I learned quickly! The material gave me a strong understanding of each program - so much so that people feel I have been working with Excel and Access for years (I was already strong in Word). This is a great book for people wanting to learn how to use the software (especially if you need it for upgrading your career!) It is also a great book for teaching and trainers for colleges or organizations. (If my kids can do it! So can you!) Questions? You can email me at MSTOMAS@aol.com. Take care

The Runaway Web
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-25
What started as information sharing among scholars has gotten so big that now there is a need for A GUIDE TO THE WORLD WIDE WEB. Business might be the biggest presence, and multiyear studies could show how well corporate web pages do over time. Information browsing and research also account for web surfing, and libraries are pioneering electronic publishing and site evaluations. In fact, the Library of Congress shook the 20th century up in the beginning years by championing the card catalogue and in the ending years by digitizing for the public, with online exhibits such as the Dead Sea scrolls and the NASA launch footage, lunar pictures, and technical reports. While who will clearinghouse Internet sites and users is being worked out, Lory Hawkes suggests keeping a personal discovery journal listing site names and URLs and using your own rating system. The author also says to go with your instincts about sites: look for recent and relevant bibliography; bookmarks pointing to other sites; respectfully treated events, people, and places; easily self-directed exploration; and comprehensive and timely information. Her book leaves readers current on everything from academic experiments such as Georgia Tech's graphics, visualization, and usability center; commercial experiments such as the Microsoft and Netscape pacesetter sites, and the Utopia virtual reality site; APA and MLA electronic documentation; search engines; web pages; and web TV dreamscape possibilities. She gets readers ready for the next web level: Alfred Glossbrenner's SEARCH ENGINES FOR THE WORLD WIDE WEB; Randolph Hock's THE EXTREME SEARCHER'S GUIDE TO WEB SEARCH ENGINES; Lincoln Stein's HOW TO SET UP AND MAINTAIN A WEB SITE; Rick Stout's THE WORLD WIDE WEB COMPLETE REFERENCE; and Robert S Want's HOW TO SEARCH THE WEB and THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS ONLINE.

Although Excel 2000 is currently out, I still find this book a valuable asset in helping me decipher Excel. The author is funny and gives great tips. He doesn't dumb it up, though. The book is well organized and I found the examples helpful and represenative of trying to solve problems in the real world. If you are trying to learn Excel for the first time, this is your book.
