This book is an excellent first step! With this book, not only will you be able to get Proxy Server up and running, but you will also understand what you did and why. I hope to see more "ON SITE" books in the future!

Clear and concise. A great companion guide

The material progressed in a logical order, and was very understandable. I have experience with Microsoft BackOffice products, but I learned Proxy Server via Kevin's ONSITE book, and was able to configure Web access through a cable modem for 125 client seats. I recommend this for anyone wanting to understand Proxy Server 2.0, and be able to apply the knowledge practically.

Simply put, It is the best!!! I (SQL Server DBA) just took a SQL Server 2000 performance tuning assignment and after looking at several SQL Server 2000 books, this one is the best for performance tuning and optimization! It is easy to read, and it got just the level of details I need. It also guide the readers step by step when dealing with more advanced topics. I certainly learned about the critical performance counters to monitor on Windows and SQL Server, so now I can focus just on the counters I need. I surely learned a lot more details about the performance monitoring, SQL Server profiling, best hardware setup for high availability/scalability and optimal configurations!

The author did put in her own experience in the book, which helps when dealing with real world situation. I highly recommend this book for SQL Server DBA's out there!

Great book for beginners

I think it's a great book for beginners. In the first three chapters it presents a very detailed explanation of how to use Visual Studio development and navigation tools and gives many code examples. Then the author does a great job explaining VB NET data types and variable creation, which is especially important for beginners. A few large chapters are devoted to application errors and debugging techniques. Here the author explains how to debug applications and prevent coding errors and walks you through each debugging technique. All object-oriented concepts are explained very clearly and with multiple code examples. In the final chapters setup and ClickOnce installation technologies are covered. Overall the book covers all the most fundamental programming topics. I believe that the lab projects attached to each chapter greatly increase the value of the book and make it an excellent self-training course.

I am a beginner in Visual Basic .NET and was looking for a book for beginners. When I read this book or do lab projects there is nothing left to guess or search in other sources. That's what I like about this book and also a very clear and simple writing style. Another positive feature is that there are plenty of code examples for each and every topic. But the best thing about this book is the lab projects that show step by step how to build the user interface and how to write code and even how to test and debug the application. I definitely recommend this book as a self-training course for beginners.

This book is something I would definitely recommend for anyone interested in breaking into programming by starting with Visual Basic. Perhaps the fact that Michael Sprague (the author) has been teaching for many years contributes to the easy-to-understand, no-nonsense flow of this book; I found other books on the same subject a little too daunting after this one. His Step-by-Step approach is very helpful, although it can be a bit tedious at times.

This is not a "cookbook" or reference book - it does not show you how to learn to program in VB overnight (it has over 75 hours of lessons, but a few "projects" that come at the end of each chapter will probably take you longer to go through the book, especially if you are just starting to program). But each lesson builds on the previous one so you are always practicing what you are learning in this book. If you are a slow folk like me, you feel tremendously rewarded when you figure out a simple task or complete a project, and it really gets you thinking about how powerful VB is and all the things you can do with it once you are proficient at it.

J Sharp, Future of Java Developers

This book is an excellent example of how an IT book should look like. Explaining the depths of .Net Framework, as well as using J# and Asp.net. It's a shame that a great deal of people do not pay attention to the importance of J#. J# is the best way for Hardcore Java programmers to combine their knowledge of Java with the superiority of .Net Foundation classes in order to produce Windows Applications. J# is a very good option for Asp developers, who would rather use Java for their applications, rather than Jsp. The war on the future of Java has begun, and C# and J# together are tough to beat.

I can't believe there is only one other review of this book on here.

This book is the most detailed and complete reference to Windows 2000 Server I've ever seen -- period. Additionally, as the review before mine mentions, the information contained within is still very relevant and useful for troubleshooting Windows 2003 Server based networks, so don't be put off by the title if you're looking for something to help you administer Win2K3 Server as well.

This book has almost no "fluff" in it, either. To give you an idea of its detail and completeness, the chapter on "Active Directory Diagnostics, Troubleshooting, and Reovery" is almost 200 pages long and full of detailed information I've never seen in any other book on Win2K or Win2K3.

I don't think Microsoft put out an upate to this, which is too bad, but it's still relevant today and will be for the next couple years, at least.

Simply Great in Every Aspect !

I always liked Microsoft Press Books and when there is some subject I must look for, my first priorities is to look in Microsoft editions if there is something related to it.
This Book has tons of invaluable information regarding Server 2000 o/s in lots of subjects and in such a level of detail that administrators with experiemce levels from little to very advanced, will definitely benefit from this book. It certainly is a valuable volume with information that is very helpful for providing resources and theory to help in Microsoft exams preparation also. Of course this is not a book solely indended for that purpose. It is mainly intended to provide resources, like all so called "Resource kit" books do, for better and efficient o/s maintenence and configuration, in the many many fields it covers. I give this book 5 stars because I realize that not a single day passes without referring to it. No Microsoft Administrator should miss this heavy volume. Get it and will be rewarded. To my opinion, you can be benefited from the material in this book even if you started your administrative career with Windows server 2003 o/s. it covers topics that 2003 server related books do not, at least not in that extent, maybe because they take ii for granted that most of 2003 admins have gained experience already from working on Windows 2000 environments.

Great study aid for Windows 95 MCP exam & Windows reference

Review Date: 1997-03-13
This book and CD set is an well-designed and effective study guide for the Implementing and Supporting Windows 95 MCP exam (70-63). I passed the test a comfortable 60 points over the passing grade after studying the guide thoroughly. I also learned a tremendous amount about Windows 95 internals, and the set will now serve as an excellent reference work. My only criticism is that it could use a few more multimedia files. They were very helpful in explaining abstract concepts such as memory and scheduling, and not all the topics that needed them had multimedia presentations

An excellent MCSE Exam guide and Windows '95 reference.

This is a great reference for anyone who supports Win '95 or plans to take the MCSE exam. It is basic enough for people new to '95, yet in depth enough for system admins and power users. I found it to be long in reading it cover-to-cover, but it is not meant to be read that way unless you plan to take the exam. It was my only reference for the exam, and I passed it easily on my first attempt. I hope the NT Self-Study Kit is as well written..

The author of the book is Keith Underdahl and I think that is a cool book he wrote.

I like Movie Makers!

This is a good book to use that could help me use Windows Movie Makers kind of like Avid Cinema.

I like this book.
