The Best Windows 98 Book Available!!

I have tried about a dozen different books on Windows 98 and have been somewhat disappointed by them. They all seem to have the usual "boilerplate" stuff that doesn't really answer some of the questions that stump beginners (and some "pros"). This book seems to anticipate your questions as you read through it.

The book is very comprehensive, and it presents information in a very clear and nontechnical manner. For example, when I first began using Windows 98, I didn't understand why it had both the My Computer window and the Explorer window. But, on page 122, Mr. Venit succinctly says, "...the My Computer icon is simply a built-in shortcut that starts Explorer and opens the My Computer folder within it!" Then, on page 123, he very clearly and helpfully explains the "two basic differences" between My Computer and Explorer. He goes on to "examine the consequences of each of these differences."

I most highly recommend The Extended Edition. Frankly, I am surprised it doesn't have a higher Sales Rank. Some might consider this book a bit expensive, but in my opinion it is worth every penny. PS: By the way, I have no connection whatsoever with the publisher or the author. I sincerely hope Mr. Venit publishes a book on Windows XP(which I expect to upgrade to someday). PPS: I am a computer "newbie," but I am a retired educator with 40 years of experience in the educational field.

I found this book full of useful information that I was able to put to immediate use. The amount of information is a little hard to digest at first but it was well worth the time, I would recommend this to any IT professional and especially for system admins.

I've never written a review for Amazon, but I have to suggest this book. It should be required reading for all Windows administrators! It is full of time saving scripts and guidance. There is little fluff, it is chocked full of practical information for system administrators.

I purchased this book primarily to use only 2 chapters. But in glancing over its introduction, I found it so much more clear and concise than any other book I've used that I am actually reading it cover-to-cover. I have a small library of books on NT and networking topics, but none covers even the most complex issues - TCP/IP, WINS, DHCP, RRAS - with such clarity or with such a focus upon essential and useful information. As another reviewer says, you'll keep looking at this one so often that you might wear it out.

This book is a "Must Have" for any Admin that must work with NT 4 in a mixed invironment. It covers connectivity into UNIX, SNA, and Novell worlds with great details. Writen in a "First Person" format it is quite easy for anyone to understand. I had the good fortune to work hand in hand with Marc Bush the contributor to the Novell information in the book, and found multiple answer's, based on his input to issues I hit when integrating the NT and Novell servers I own.

A MUST HAVE in your library. Buy two, you'll wear one out re

Regardless of wether you're new to NT and networking or an old hand, this book is a must have. The author takes you by the hand and from scratch has you put together a professional working network in no time at all. Well written, clear, concise, can't say enough about this book. It takes a practical approach to the problem of networking.

For the experienced network person, this book provides comprehensive and real life scenarios in an easy to understand manner. Its like having a consultant working with you and telling you what really matters. Even for a manger or new person who needs to understand how things work this is a must have. One of my best purchases.

I bought this book before I actually started working towards my MCSE in order to get a general understanding of NT network architecture. It proved to be incredibly useful first step towards understanding the overall picture of how multiple servers and workstations interact in both a large and small environment. The understanding I derived from this book created a good frame of reference for when I began my training towards the MCSE.

I first heard about this book from Anil Desai about 4 months before its release. He had told me that it covered some of the issues that I was talking to him about. The book actually brings new ideas and ways to handle Network Management. My skills have defnintely been augmented by this book more so than any other. I would recommend that everyone buy a copy of this book.

This book provides details that are needed if you are going to support a NT-powered network. Great tips, and a level of detail that makes it the first reference book to grab off the shelf when trying to do something.

Maybe mistitled but a great book

Some may misconstrue the title of this book to mean network management in the sense of system administration or network traffic flow. This is certainly not the case as the sub-title indicates. It is a book that covers some of what a traditional NT admin book would but is really much more. The book is very much geard towards the network/IT/IS manager. The book is filled with great bits on policies and procedures as well as how to get the most out of your NT systems. If you are an experienced NT admin this book will not have much that is new for you although, because it is so well written, it may still be an interesting read (as it was for me). But the new NT admin and, more importantly, the new manager, will find this a great book on how to use NT efficiently and what non-technical issues come up in the IT world. The book also has excellent references throughtout that point out places to find more specific details.

For the experienced NT admin 'Windows NT Network Management' is just a good read but for the new manager or someone coming over from other areas or systems it is an excellent primer on NT and system management issues.

An NT 4 book full of good security related advice as well as step by step guidelines. I found every part of the NT 4 portion relevant to my everyday work. I've not seen Windows 2000 yet so I can't comment on that portion.

Have you ever tried to work your way through the Microsoft documentation (?) to find out how to secure your systems? Tough going eh? This book made it a far more simple task to accomplish through clear step by step instructions as well as insights into why these measures should be taken and the pros and cons of using them. I feel that I have a good chance now of getting these beasts under control before I move on to Win 2k when it settles down in 2001.

This book is IT. The only security-related book that I've read that explains it in terms that I understand fully (I'm no rocket scientist). Especially useful because of the chapters on User Profiles and System Polices. I've never fully understood the implementation before.

Great work Michael! Where were you when NT 4.0 first came out?

I like the the combo of necessary theory with enough real life examples to really use it. I hate those books that are all recipes or others who want to get just technical. Ofter the latter ones , give examples that make the theory even more opaque. Real life situations are often very complex. One needs a lot of theory to really figure things out

A must read for NT4 Administrators who want to learn!

Review Date: 1997-03-27

After wading through many different NT 4.0 Administrator Bibles, I found this book to be an excellent read. Having not had previous experience supporting an NT environment of any kind, I was looking for some serious help to get up to speed. Well this book did it.

My copy of this book now sports many little "sticky" markers and is wonderfully colored with highlighted and underlined notes. The only "bible" that I've read completely.

This book is well written, easy to follow and does not need to be read in sequential order. I jumped from chapter to chapter and still found the information useful. I have now jumped from "scared" to try it, to "hey let's dive in mode." It's a wonderful feeling when you can get information from a book and feel confident to stride forth into the strange and unknown.

I found an acronym that was new to me, and told the publisher. The next thing I knew, I received a surprise e-mail from the author explaining the acronym with examples. So how many authors do you know that will take the time to answer your questions?

This book is definitely a must have for anyone who plans to deploy a Windows 2008 (or even 2003) based Certificate Authority/PKI infrastructure. The author not only fully masters the subject, he also has found the rare balance between the necessary theory, legal aspects, discussing design aspects and diving into technical information. On top of that, the book contains an awful lot of real life scenario's and implementation examples.
So before you even start installing AD CS, read this book. You won't be disappointed.

This book is a significant and very worthwhile update on the 2003 version. The new edition is considerably larger than the previous one and covers the new features of Windows Server 2008 PKI including the new Advanced Cryptography Support (Suite B), OCSP and SCEP (among others).
The book also includes details of the Microsoft Certificate Lifecycle Manager (CLM/ILM 2007) product.
This book is the best reference for Windows PKI.
