There is a saying 'better late than never!', so I'm writing this review. I just borrowed this book from the library looking for a way to understand classes, constructors and destructors, and fortunately I found them here in this book! I esp. like chapter 3 & 4, and I bought my own copy from Amazon as I am very pleased!
I hope Mr.Jamsa will follow this up with another for Visual Basic 2005 or 2008.

Explained reflection in great deal ... things now make sense. Was able to convert the demo program that queried itself (types of objects--their methods, attributes, ...) into a ASP page that performs a very generic sort of ado.net data. Very cool.

Covers all aspects of VB.NET. The discussion on threads demonstrates classic coding -- locks, monitors, and more -- the code works!

Good coverage of ASP.NET and Web services.

Out of Print but well worth finding for all versions of VB

For all things except CCReations and VBOOP there really is a single book that covers it all for beginners to severely advanced coders. I first bought the VB3 edition and the VB4 edition is still the first grabbed book whenever I hit any non-oop walls. Graphics & palettes, optimizations, and a devious VB-ONLY encryption technique that is as secure as any system you would pay for (and that only needs to be converted to a VBdll to get rid of the documented limitation ... prior to VB5 you could not reset the initial "engine" without restarting the app... think about it). Seriously, this book is the ace in the hole. Says "VB4" on the cover, excellent for any VB version (cd includes the full VB3 version too). Get it, you'll never regret it. If Amazon can't get it for you (nothing against Amazon at all but it is listed as out of print) try calling "Computer Books @ Half Price" (ask you operator for the numbers in Bellevue or Seattle Washington) for a brand new copy ... at half price .

Best VB book for intermediate programmers who care.

For anyone who knows a reasonable amount of general visual basic. The language is ENGLISH. It's not scientific, you can understand more complex concepts. Proof of all statements made are backed up with code. Their are plenty of examples. I do not write book reviews, but this book deserved one. I only hope that they write another one, or someone else can write as good a book for VB5.

I never used the API before. I got this book and in minutes I knew how to READ, WRITE and EDIT an INI file using the API. Add mail-aware and mail-enabled to all your applications. It just shows you all the stuff you thought where impossible to program in a couple of lines of code. Would of got a 10 but only the bible gets that rating

A great book

Great coverage of tricks and treats

You sit sometimes and think for hours about how to do something in Visual Basic that is so darn easy to do in the pure Win32 API. It still does not come. More Jolt. Nope still nothing. Then you read this book and holy moly there it is!

I think that pretty much covers what this book is about. For someone like me that started programming Windows with Windows 2.0 and am an old hand at the actual C level API this book brings some of the tricks of the trade to the Visual Basic programmer. Between this book and "Advanced Visual Basic 6" by Matthew Curland a programmer of VB will find plenty of ammunition to shut down those "VB is a whimpy language" attack chihuahuas.

If you are a better than average VB programmer and need some new tricks to keep interest up or if you are any level programmer that needs a little spice to go with your code get this book and play with the code inside.

This book also does something else all books should do. The authors included the source code for ALL the examples and annotated the code to the max. Thus the "Annotated Archives" title, eh. Other peoples' code is a valuable tool for programmers and there is plenty of it in this book.

An excellent vb-book!

When it comes to references and "secrets of" books, there are so many choices that it makes finding a decent book nearly impossible. I am delighted to have stumbled onto "Visual Basic Annotated Archives." Whether you need to learn how to write an ActiveX DLL or simply wish to look at snippets of clever code, this is the one to consider. I heard that one of the authors (Kent) is a teacher... it shows in his writing style, which is very easy to follow.

This do-it-all reference to the more than 500 Microsoft C library functions provides you with the information necessary for excellent programming results. It contains real-world examples for every routine. Each library routine is categorized by func tion and each section is preceded by interactive tutorials so that you can learn C code quickly. Plus, a unique compatibility box approach shows the portability with other versions of C and popular operating systems. Just follow the expert advice one step at a time and you'll write more organized, complete, and powerful C programs.

This is a really good book. I am on my second copy. This first one walked off. I have been a programmer for over 10 years and though I don't alway use Microsoft C, I still refer to this book often. It is well organized, very concise and contains all the details. I have yet to find a discrepancy. It has quick indexes inside the front and back covers. Front is alphebetical, back is by subject. I've used it so often that I have a lot of the page numbers memorized. Memcpy is on page 249. The only thing else I can recommend about this book is to keep a close eye on it.

The inside front cover and first page is an alphabetic index of all C functions that are included in the book. The back cover has a list by category: Disk Access, Buffered I/O, Graphics, etc. Each function description tells you what compilers use it, what the prototype is, detailed description of each argument, return value and usage, with examples.

The evolution from NT to Windows 2000 has brought about a significant increase in the complexities of securing your server and network environment. This book provides a well thought out approach to allow you to enhance your knowledge of NT security and extend that knowledge to Windows 2000.

Roberta Bragg is one of the foremost experts on Security. I got this book based on her reputation and was not disappointed. Security has a lot of dark passages that can lose you, but this book, since it is dedicated to Win2k, covers all topics in a clear, concise format. It is good for security novices and experts. I have used it to not only understand principles but to gather reference information. An Excellent book!

Excellent Security Book - up to Intermediate
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-29
This book provides a good grounding in security topics, explaining such topics like cryptography, Kerberos and Group Policy. It then builds upon this information to specifics for Windows 2000 OS and services (such as VPN, RRAS, NAT etc). Excellent details on securing the Windows 2000 registry and file system are included - making this book an excellent reference, not just a "read-once-and-pack-away" book.

So why only 4 stars?
* The book didn't flow particularly well (some sections written better than others). It will require a beginner to go back and forth to properly understand the implementation of security in Windows 2000.
* The level of detail was dependent on the topic. OS security, such as File and Registry security are detailed, yet there was not enough information on some topics (for example PKI, IPSec). Sadly, the use of IPSec Policies was hardly mentioned (creating filter lists and actions etc.)
* Finally, some generic security tenants were alluded to, but not explained in the introduction (for example Least Privilege, Security through Obscurity).

I would still recommend this book as an excellent security book for any IT professional working mainly with Windows 2000.

Security at its very best.

For most network managers the most important aspect of the job is the security of the data. Not allowing hackers into the system is the best way to make sure your data is safe. Setting up RAS, RRAS, VPN, Radius and Terminal Services are all included in that job description.

Windows 2000 Security is a book that not only talks about the concepts but also breaks it down into simple, plain speaking language. The four-part book is easy to follow and while some of the concepts are for the more knowledgeable network managers, everyone should be able to get something from this book.

In part 1 you start off with basic concepts of security, you take a look at crypto, protocols and APIs, and finally you work with public key encryption and Kerberos. Part 2 works in the securing of 2000 and NTFS and well as 2000 EFS.

Also in part 2 the is authentication and security tools and techniques for both 2000 professional and server. Part 3 deals with lanss and Microsoft networks as well as legacy clients. Finally part 4 - real world networks. Part 4 shows you about remote access, public key encryption, other operating systems and also gives you case studies to learn from.

The true network manager will have a book like this around at all times and the true managers and administrators with makes sure that securing the network is a major priority. This book is certainly making its case self-evident.

Although the book lives up to its title, there are plenty of secrets, undocumented features and tips offered in the book, mostly Windows 98 Secrets Gold is a review of stuff most users will already know. In its current form, the book should be published in 2 volumes because it is quite unwieldy as a single volume making it difficult to sit and read. On the other hand, if the editors stuck to the title and only printed the secrets then the book would be much shorter and in my opinion, more useful. Secrets, undocumented features and tips are identified in the text margins with an icon and one only need flip through the book to realize that if you were to distill out the non iconized text, then the book would be much more compact. Curiously, the book keeps making distinctions between the features in Windows 98 and Windows 3.1 with hardly a nod to Windows 95. Still, like the authors state in the introduction, if even one tip is useful, you probably will have gotten your money's worth.

Finally, a book I can understand. Im not an expert at computers but I do want to learn more about security, especially due to recent events! Most books are complicated with too many samples that assume I know what they are talking about.

While some of the material is above my head, I finally understand how the Internet and hackers work! I even realized that my computer was open to attack through my shares.

anyways...this is a great book full of information I could understand and use!

This book definitely opened my eyes, and I am an experienced user. The hacker attack techniques were explained with clarity. There was also good additional reading references that were annotated. Good step-by-step recipies for protecting your broadband computer from hackers and computer viruses.

Pros:
--Good coverage of Windows XP
--Good coverage of Wireless hacking
--Shows you how to tighten your system using free tools
--Good for beginner/intermediate level

Cons:
--Covers Windows only (no Linux)
--Some of this is review material for experts

Overall, it is definitely a book you should buy and read. Highly recommended!
