Making Unified Messaging Work
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-09
In the beginning there was the telephone. Then there e-mail, and not long after came sophisticated voice messaging systems that replaced the simple answering machines. Then all of this kind of communications becan to converge. The combined communications capability became called Unified Messaging. Cisco's Unity server is the state-of-the-art in unified messaging systems. And this book seems destined to be the Unity Bible.

This book covers unity. Part I, about a quarter of the book is on the concepts and architecture of the of the Unity system. A good bit of the material in this section covers features that are not discussed anywhere else.

Part II, about a third of the book is on Deployment. Unity is a very flexible system. That means that the installer has many options to consider, and the use of these options involves tradeoffs.

Part III is on the ongoing management and administration of a Unity system. What tools, for instance, are available to monitor the performance of the system and how to interpret the results that these tools give you.

Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-21
This book covers every facet of DSL technology, from the bits and bytes of packets to strategies employed in deploying and implementing DSL networks. Its written in easy to understand style, complemented by gratuitous figures and configurations. The book offers a good blend of theory and practical applications of DSL technology.

I highly recomend this for casual readers interested in this subject, as well as experienced engineers running deployed networks . It provides a great source of information for everyone.

A Sales Process that Works!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-01
As a sales professional who is trained as an engineer, and sells technical products, I really enjoyed the detailed explanations of how to transform from a typical "vendor" to a bona fide business resource to your customers. The detail on customer research, the techniques on performing a "knowledge call", all are a foundation to successful sales.

Typical sale techniques such as presentations are improved, and the process of obtaining business information and using it to your advantage is detailed. This stuff works! Jerry details the entire sales process, interconnecting all of the aspects to increase your percentage of winning.

The Best Business Book I have ever read!

It's witty, amazingly informative, and practical. Of course we need to change our mind-sets from vendors to business resources. Did I know that before I read this? I know it now and that's all that matters. AND, he tells you HOW! I am the owner of a new business so it is imparative that I succeed or I don't eat. I will not send this to my competition to be sure. I have the upper hand just for reading this book. I highly recommend this to any vendor-unless you are my competition!

As a voice consultant it is often hard to find a book that is both informative for the topic and useful during the actual work. This book succeeded on both fronts. Using this book I was able to recently pass the Cisco exam for this material. However it is far more important for me to have a book that I can use to get the work done. IP telephony has become such a complex detailed solution that no one can keep every detail of how to do something in their head. This book has already been a great reference to remind me of the specific steps I need to configure a portion of Communications Manager. I always have it handy and recommend it to my clients any chance I get.

Great book!!!

This book is awesome. By far one of the better books written for a topic that can be really complex. He really knows what he's talking about. I use this book all the time- this helped me pass the CIPT courses and now I'm a CCVP!!!

mostly about IPsec
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-27
Ostensibly, this book is about both the general topic of Virtual Private Networks and Cisco's IPsec. In reality, it is mostly about the latter. (The book is from Cisco Press, isn't it?)

The explanations of VPN are quite well done, to be sure. Applicable to any vendor's VPN offerings, not just Cisco's. But it is how IPsec works that constitutes most of the text. En route, there are also nice discussions of the underlying cryptographic processes. No maths is presented. Just qualitative explanations of various public key encryption methods. If you are a sysadmin, you should already be familiar with much of this PKI material. Cisco has clearly sweated out the details of some heavy duty cryptographic processes, to ensure the privacy of the IPsec VPNs.

The book also exposes you to some low level IP packet formatting issues. The idea of a VPN tunnel rests on these foundations, of encapsulating messages at one end of the tunnel, and being able to unwrap them at the other end.

I get the feeling that the typical sysadmin who deploys IPsec between her 2 networks that need a VPN, won't actually need to know much of the cryptographic discussion in the book. Perhaps to make some initial configuration decisions. But on a day-to-day basis, once IPsec is set up, maintenance seems minimal. Which suggests good design by Cisco.

A Lot of Information with a Slight Cisco Emphasis
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-04
The introduction to this book clearly states that it is intended for engineers, consultants, administrators and others who have an interest in securing their networks with Cisco routers and VPN products. After all, the book is published by Cisco Press. This is not a bad idea, Cisco makes an awful lot of the equipment used in this area, but it may be something you want to consider if you are using competitive equipment.

Within this limitation, however, the book gives an excellent introduction to the problem and the solutions. There is an awful lot of background information that while sometimes tending to make your eyes close by themselves, gives you the background you really need to know when you are having a problem in a particular area.

The depth given in this book is far beyond the 'type this in' approach given in a lot of books. It is an excellent source of the information needed for a clear understanding of the problems and solutions. Highly Recommended to anyone getting involved with communications security.

THIS BOOK WAS USED FOR A 3RD GRADE CLASS. IT WAS VERY GOOD IN TEACHING ABOUT SYNONYMS AND ANTONYMS. HOWEVER, IN MY SITUATION, I USED THE BOOK FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO HAD TO ACT AS IF THEY WERE IN THE THIRD GRADE. IT WAS A VERY GOOD BOOK TO HELP CHILDREN LEARN TEH DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SYNONYMS AND ANTONYMS. ALSO, IT HAS MANY ACTIVITIES AND THINGS TO DO, QUESTIONS TO ASK THE CHILDREN IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK AS WELL. THE TRADE BOOKS THAT GO ALONG WITH TEH BIG BOOK IS ALSO GOOD AS WELL BECAUSE IT HELPS CHILDREN TO BE ABLE TO FOLLOW ALONG. THE BIG BOOK HELPS CHILDREN TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE BETTER AND FOLLOW ALONG FOR ASSIGNMENTS OR ANYTHING ELSE BECAUSE THEY SEE THINGSD RIGHT THERE AND UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL. IT WAS A VERY GOOD BOOK AND I WOULD DEFINITELY CONSIDER USING IT IN MY CLASSROOM WHEN I BECOME A TEACHER.

There are a lot of retellings of this favorite fable out there, but this one has a unique freshness, with its accessible language and bold illustrations. It's great to use in the classroom to teach 1st and 2nd graders about punctuation marks. They can take turns acting out the "quotes" for the lion and the mouse. It's also good for teaching about opposites. They can also learn a lot about cooperation and generosity. I highly recommend this trade book for teachers, students, and parents too.

The number of changes that Microsoft implemented when they went from Visual Basic 6.0 to the .NET Framework are huge. This book takes you through the steps to not only convert your current code, but to get you into the correct mind set to program in the .NET architecture.

The examples in the book are clear for the basic programmer to learn from, and at the same time cover all of the steps one needs to be aware of to make a successful program.

This definitely should be your first book to read when planning the updating of your current code and future code plans.

The tool you need to learn VB.Net

With all that has changed from VB 6.0 to VB.NET, you need a solid starting place for our personal migration. This book provides that solid starting place with a good mix of theory and examples, organized in a very easy to follow natural progression.

The book takes you through the basic changes to Visual Basic .Net, to the new features of the language, and finally how to make it all come together.

The author has a solid grasp of the material and presents it in a way that allows you to get a working knowledge of VB.Net in a short amount of time.
