This is a good book to use to learn MATLAB especially designed for engineers. The first chapter covers problem solving with various examples. The second chapter introduces MATLAB and its basics. This is followed in chapters 3 and 4 by discussion of arrays and matrices, and control flow (If and For loops, etc). Chapter 5 covers statistical concepts and their use in MATLAB. This is followed in Chapters 6 and 7 by matrix computations and graphing (two and three-dimensional plots). Chapters 8-15 cover numerical methods but the coverage is not comprehensive. One major feature of the book is the diversity of the examples and applications that are provided. However, this book is rather old and may not cover some of the new features that were added in the latests MATLAB versions. If you are just beginning to learn MATLAB, check the book "MATLAB for Beginners: A Gentle Approach."

Review Engineering Problem Solving with MATLAB By Delores M. Etter

I teach numerical methods at B.S. and graduate levels, and have found the book very useful because it introduces the MATLAB operating environment and illustate it by means of engineering problem solving.

We use three tools in our numerical methods courses: advanced programmable calculators, high level language programs and mathematical commercial languages (MATLAB). All three options are important, but we feel that MATLAB provides a powerful and relatively easy way of work in this context.

The part II of the book (numerical techniques) is not a complete coverage of the numerical methods. However, the techniques presented here are well selected and constitute a good basis to apply the operating environment MATLAB. For a numerical methods course, it will be necessary to supplement this material with other books to cover the customary content of this subject.

I like the clear style of Dr. Etter. The examples selected for problem solving are interesting and of diverse areas. The student's opinions are, generally, favorable. Finally, I would like to recommend this book to teachers, students and professionals of engineering who uses the computer for problem solving.

I liked this book because it gave me what I needed to know to comfortably pass the 50-634 exam without getting bogged down with too much detail. I used it as a study aid along with my class textbook and selftest software. Good discussion on time synchronization, WTM.NLM, and merging. There are questions at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book that can be used to really test your knowledge. Would be better if these questions were on CD or the publisher's website. I liked the treatment the book gave regarding an IP environment - it enabled me to answer two or three real exam test questions that I otherwise may have missed. I really rate this book at 4 1/2 stars, almost a 5. The Cram Sheet of key facts provided at the front of the book is more of a marketing gimmick than anything else; it's OK for a quick review before you go into the exam but don't rely on it for anything else.

The practice questions are very close to the actual test.

I read the David Clarke 4.11 books then decided to switch to the CNE 5 track. I read this book one time through with no other reference to any CNE 5 book and I aced the exam. This book actually covers more than the Test Objectives. Excellent book.

This book certainly explains all the basic requirements for all FAA medicals, but I believe the author is too repetitive, especially when he explains 100 times how important the medical is. The whole book could have been a lot shorter. The only interesting part was the nutrition section, and the hypertension chapter.

No more anxiety about the certification process

Fellow licensed pilots, I'm about 1/2-way through this book and I can't believe I did for so long without it. Dr. Reinhart provides every nuance of the Medical Certification Process, along with the encouraging words for taking responsibility for our own "airworthiness." I fly as a hobby, with a 3rd class medical, and this book has taken away much of the anxiety I previously felt about the process. It took me many painstaking years to earn my Private Certificate, and I am now more secure that I'm better equipped to keep current with the knowledge and insights provided by Dr. Reinhart.

Thorough content, but NO practice exams or questions !!!

The content of the two books is very thorough and includes key points of assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up evaluation. It would be an asset for current students and as a reference in practice settings. It would be an excellent resource for study groups or as an adjunct to a review course. Several "tips" are listed at the end of each chapter for test-taking, however there are no specific questions or practice exams in this book. Practice certification exams are sold separately and can be obtained through the publisher.

Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Review Book, Hollier, A., Levy, D., & Preis, C., (1998), covers, in an easy to read, bulleted format, the information I needed to successfuly take the family nurse practitioner certification exam. The book covers all body systems, and also includes chapters on health promotion and human development and on professional issues. The chapters on pregnancy and lactation include the kind and amount of information a family nurse practitioner student needs in contrast with a women's health book, which provides too much information for the student specializing in family practice.

This book is different from the others in its specific focus. There is not a lot of wasted information offered that the student has to wade through in order to get the information he needs. The book provides the student with exactly what it is promoted as providing, a concise, comprehensive study guide.

I like the guide in that it provides information about qualifications and requiresment, but it lack the other important information. Where can I recieve the training? How I can recieve financial aid? How much will that training cost? I have found a guide that came very close to my needs from FutuReady it is called "Wanted Certified". It only concentrates on the Computer Industry but it is a real good guide.

A handy reminder to use common sense...
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-18
This book is what it says it is, so I won't repeat it here. Both informative and easy to read, this is a great reference book to have on your bookshelf if you are a pilot or are thinking of becoming one. Those portions of the book related to self-care ought to be common sense, but sometimes it is nice to be reassured that common sense is still a viable guide to watching your own health.

Peppered throughout are interesting statistics and humorous anecdotes which keep the atmosphere on the lighter side of what could otherwise be a very dry topic. Gahlinger also illuminates a path through the maze of paperwork that the government can request of you. While this guide won't save you from filling out dozens of forms, at least you will know what you have to do from the get-go, saving you a lot of time and frustration in the long run.

This book will be particularly valuable to anyone who has had or who suspects they may have a medical condition that could disqualify them from receiving an FAA medical certificate.

An excellent, straightforward reference

Compiled and written by Senior Aviation Medical Examiner Paul M. Gahlinger, Health For Pilots is a complete and practical 265-page guide to FAA medical certification and self-care for those seeking to become (or remain) aviation pilots. Individual chapters address the physical requirements of the FAA medical exam, offers an extensive listing of potentially disqualifying conditions, instructions for getting a SODA (statement of demonstrated ability) to counter a disqualification, describes the ins and outs of drug testing programs, and much, much more. Health For Pilots is an excellent, straightforward reference and resource which should be a core part of any personal, professional, or academic Aviation Studies reference collection or reading list.

In a world of lean, agile, etc., large projects and complex organizations still require rigor that is difficult to accomplish with lightweight methods. Although RUP was never intended to be a heavyweight method, misinformed and undereducated RUP users have often misused and abused RUP, counteracting its primary objectives.

Jochen's diverse background and experience offers grounding for presentation of RUP in a pragmatic manner that offers a lot of information in an efficient format. Anyone who is involved in non-trivial projects will be well-served to understand the key elements of RUP to ensure that those projects sufficiently handle critical tasks to reduce project risk. Instead of drowning in information overload, Jochen's book provides a thorough, comprehensive, and clear explanation of the elements of RUP that are most useful and relevant for project work.

This is an excellent study guide. Bankes and Hatter have the rare ability to present very technical material in a way that is easy to read and understand.

The layout is outstanding. Each chapter is a major section of one exam. All of the key concepts are listed and defined. There is plenty of information, but no more than necessary - just as a good study guide should be.

One very nice touch is addition of a "cram sheet". This is a removable sheet written in a small font with all of the key concepts you need to know to pass the exams. Great idea guys!

While the technical information excellent, I also appreciate the "real world" advise given. They offer suggestions on seat choice, strategies for difficult questions, etc. It's obvious the authors are not strangers to certification process.

Good, but can be much better!

I decided to get this book as it seemed to be the only one on the market that targeted the 3 exams I wanted to take. I am happy to say I passed all three exams (first-time around) using the book, AND the designer help database. I recommend buying this book if you've not taken any courses or don't know what might be on the exam.

However there were so many errors, typos e.g. Design Locking and Document locking were mixed up, sometimes the wrong diagram was being displayed for the section; I became somewhat distrustful so I used the designer help database extensively to confirm what I was reading! (That probably made me better prepared for the exam)
Make sure you also get hands-on experience!!!

This is a well written and well presented book. It helps the reader decide which options are most appropriate to his/her scenario and includes lots of new information relevant to Windows Server 2003.

The book goes beyond the bare minimum information needed to pass the exam and instead offers lots of additional tips and useful pieces of information which the authors have no doubt acquired through their years of experience in the world of designing Active Directory solutions.

Thoroughly recommended!

Actually I am not really fond of the microsoft study guides, to prepare for any exam, but this one just proves me wrong! Just like you can expect on the exam, they describe a case and drill down the do's, don'ts, why and the why not's or the best solution for the specific case.

A good study aid for the 70-220 exam

If you have tried Microsoft Readiness Reviews in the past you probably didn't buy more than one. The difference between the level of difficulty of the practice questions and the actual test questions made previous Readiness Reviews a poor choice. While the level of difficulty is still not equal to the actual test, the questions in the 70-220 Readiness Review are challenging and the case studies give insight into what you will see on the 70-220 test.

The book is organized to follow the official Microsoft exam objectives. Each section contains a very short summary of the objective. My only criticism is that in many cases the summary was too brief, or simply did not contain useful summary information. On the plus side, the explanations for the answers (both the correct and incorrect choices) to the practice questions also gave useful insight into the actual exam.

I used the Microsoft 70-220 Training Kit (see my review) to learn the material and the Readiness Review to study for, and pass the test. I did not use any of the Readiness Reviews for the core exams, but I will certainly consider them for future tests.
