This is a much needed and appreciated book on clear and consice communication for students writing on their design projects, design statements for themselves about their portfolios, cover letters for employment purposes, not to mention all the aspects of proposals, business communication, applications, brochures, etc. As an educator in the design arts for over 25 years, I am especially happy to have this resource to share with design students and also find much useful information included for myself. Thanks for a great addition to my design library!

Writing for Design Professionals is one of the most comprehensive, specific guides you could want.

Whether you're a student or a design professional, good writing is the key to advancing your career: a key too often missed in design schools which don't inform students how to improve writing skills. Enter the second, updated edition of Writing for Design Professionals, a survey expanded to consider internet marketing, communication and job hunting and which fills the gap in blending a focus on design professionals with instructionals and methods of clarifying and improving writing. From producing brochures and marketing through proposals and portfolio development to writing for school or media and producing appropriate public speeches, Writing for Design Professionals is one of the most comprehensive, specific guides you could want.

From "capsule hotels" to "tissue paper giveaways" to "coffee shop concepts," Leonard Koren takes the reader on a fascinating, informative tour of Japan. The writing is direct and lively, and the illustrations are superb. If you're looking for a quirky, delightful insight into the Japanese culture, I highly recommend this book.

From time to time a book on aviation history comes along that is well researched, written with clarity and fills a void needed in the field. "Airlines and Air Mail: The Post Office and the Birth
of the Commercial Aviation Industry" by F.R. van der Linden is such a book. The content of the book has new material presented in a scholarly manner for those interested in the story of how the U.S. civil aviation industry was established in the United States between the two World Wars. This outside of the cockpit story is a dynamic dissertation that provides insight on how forward thinking individuals both in government and industry overcame bureaucracy, hidden agendas, uncertain budget cycles inside the two party political system to establish a new reliable and safe transportation system we know today as the Airlines. In addition, the author provides the reader with a detailed explanation of key events that drove the airline industry and government to make the kind of legislative, regulatory and management decisions they made during the turbulent decade of the 1930's.
Bottom line, this book, is a major contribution to written aviation history and will serve as an excellent source of factual history for those interested in airline development in the United States.

The Architecture of Diplomacy - A well done history
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-09
I have had the good fortune to meet Ms. Loeffler, to hear her speak on this subject, to be involved in designing embassies, studying embassies, and also in reading this spectacular history. Although it was written a few years prior to 9/11/01, and so does not cover the current Embassy building program, her history is very complete in covering the development an American building type.

Although all countries have embassies, a United States Embassy is a special kind of building. Ms. Loeffler takes us all around the world and across over a century of time exploring how the US Embassies have developed and evolved over the years. The most interesting portions of the book are in the post World War II period to the early 1960's.

The reader is introduced to the important people in FBO (now called OBO) at the State Department. We read of the growth of the embassy program and the contribution of important American architects. We learn of the endeavors of FBO to create a world class image for America through our embassies. We learn of the challenges of designing for terrorism.

I hope Ms. Loeffler will get a chance to add chapters to this history to follow the current developments as this building type continues to develop in these post 9/11 years.

Good Book.

If you live in a town that is wrangling about building a new library and what that library should be like, you need this book as a reference. I relied on this book heavily in all research and my speeches leading up to my Town's approval of our new library.

The social, economic, and political development of Ireland
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-12
In A Short History Of Modern Ireland, freelance writer and historian Richard Killeen traces the different strands within 19th and 20th century Irish nationalism -- as well as the growing resistance to Irish independence and nationalism in Ulster. Reflected in this succinct historical survey are the social, economic, and political development of Ireland ranging from industrialization and transportation, to urban growth, the decline of the Irish language, and the chronic instability of Northern Ireland. Enhanced with color and b/w photography, A Short History Of Modern Ireland is concise, superbly presented, and a welcome contribution to any personal or community library World History collection.

Probably the first Internet Law treatise
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-22
Providing a treatise on Internet and Online Law is not easy. It is almost impossible. The range of topics to deal with includes all the main substantial law subjects and intersects with various elements of International Law and Jurisdiction just to name a few. This book does it egregiously. I used it for research: the only limit is that focuses mainly on U.S. Law (despite other countries are coming up with interesting solutions and answers). As far as the rest is concerned, it is all positive: updated, wide range of case law fully explained, easy to read (with at least a basic understanding of the law and the internet jargon). It also provides practical examples and solutions for those who are engaged or wish to engage in the Internet Business. I also found very interesting the Chapter regarding Securities Law and Copyright.
