The book I wish I had when I started administering SharePoint

Review Date: 2008-07-15
This was the only technical book I have ever read cover to cover. I found all of the information in here absolutely applicable and relevant to real-world implementation of SharePoint 2007. Ben Curry covers not only the best practices, but give examples of how these practices work in real companies. There are also mentions of "gotchas" and a number of excellently explained examples. He explains SharePoint-specific terminology and not only how to implement a particular feature of Sharepoint, but the WHY behind it.

This is definitely the book I wish I had when I first started using SharePoint. It is a compilation of all the topics that are continuously blogged about by all the experts.

A definite must-read for any SharePoint Administrator!

Examples and authors insight into various topics are very valuable. I definitely recommend this book for any SharePoint Administrator during the early phases of any SharePoint implementation. This book is fantastic for individuals who understand SharePoint, and the normal SharePoint practices, but want more in-depth tips, tricks, and best practices written by two guys who have plenty of real-world experience.

There are plenty of suggestions for ensuring you are getting the most out of your SharePoint 2007 installation.

The book is well-written, easy to read, and more importantly, easy to understand.
It also contains a CD with lots of utilities and helpful documents that can be used in your own SharePoint environment.

I highly recommend you buy this book, as it explains a lot of areas in SharePoint that sometimes are confusing, and it also contains real-world tips and tricks that you can implement to ensure your SharePoint installation is running optimally.

Thanks and great job guys!

I've always hated "How to" manuals written by people who know the application, but not the work. This book shows how to use MS Project from the perspective of a Project Manager.

It's alway been ironic when I've used other resources that the person who wrote the book explains all the buttons, but not when/why they are really used. "The Missing Manual" is the perfect marriage of function and purpose.

I used to have the Bible book for Microsoft Project as my reference for making the most out of this software for managing projects, until The Missing Manual came out. This title in now-popular Missing Manual series takes you through the basics and not-so-basics for Project Standard and Project Professional, allowing you to understand the when and the why behind its features and helping you better build and refine your project plans, track progress of your projects and succeed as a project manager.

Goes far beyond the usual `how to' guide.

Any who own Microsoft's Project 2007 needs Bonnie Bafore's MICROSOFT OFFICE PROJECT 2007: THE MISSING MANUAL guide, which should really be in the box alongside the program. It offers easy step-by-step instructions that cover both Project Standard and Project Professional, explaining how and why to use some features - an approach which goes far beyond the usual `how to' guide. From using Project in a variety of business applications and incorporating other programs such as Word and Outlook to practically guaranteeing project success, MICROSOFT PROJECT 2007: THE MISSING MANUAL should be on the shelves not only of any serious computer reference library, but any business library and any individual who owns Project 2007 and wants to get the most out of it.

This manual is extremely helpful for both the novice and the veteran user. The introductory section on project management is one of the best I have seen, and worth the price of the book by itself. Entertaining yet concise style. Book is well organized and information is easily found.
Highly recommended.

The collabortive effort of C# experts Mark Schmidt and Simon Robinson, Microsoft Visual C# .NET 2003 Developer's Cookbook (0672325802, $49.99 , 816 pages, Intermediate Level) takes a new and impressively unique approach to stand out among the numerous .NET programming titles available today as being especially "user friendly". The format is well suited for developers that already understand the basics of .NET programming and want a practical reference for various programming tasks.

easy to read - lots of great examples..

This book reminds me of teaching a child to walk, to run, to ride a bike, drive a car, and then operate a tank. The text is easy to follow, and there is lots of great reinforcement with examples. MSVC# .NET is a powerful language, and this book helps you make use of everything it has to offer. It's a book that everyone can learn from and use as a reference; from the inexperienced software developer to the experienced software developer.

Great book, highly recommended. Detailed information explained thoroughly and understandably. Every Windows Admin should own this book. As mentioned previously, the Kerberos and Delegation chapters are fabulous as is the chapter on Unix/Linux Authentication Integration. Actually, every chapter provided quite a bit of value. If you are a Windows Admin - read this book, you will be glad you did.

A Classic...

Another instant classic from the folks at DP/HP. The writing style is truly excellent - flows nicely, never boring, and technically enlightening...its what i expect from De Clerq to be honest - author of the classic: Mission Critical Active Directory. My only complaint is that this book is really the 2nd Ed of Windows 2003 Security Infrastructures (again De Clerq and DP/HP, and obviously covering SP1 and R2), so if you already have that one, then you may need to determine whether the new info is worth the purchase. Regardless - this book is brilliant...the chapter on Delegation is worth the price alone.

Outstanding reference

Very good book, chock full of detail on things you have issues finding details on normally. Sections on Kerberos and Active Directory will likely be extremely enlightening for many people. Some pieces can be a little tough to follow at times but we aren't talking about how to color within the lines in a coloring book, this is some serious technical security information. I highly recommend that all Windows Admins spend time cuddled up with this book. Windows Server Admins absolutely better be reading this book.

Having been using Microsoft products (like many of us) through the generations, I find that most "techie" books are 90% review, 5% new, and 5% other. This book doesnt waste time with the old "this is a mouse, and press the left button once to click" stuff. It assumes that you have a working knowledge and takes off from there.
The authors do a great job of explaining this stuff in detail without all the mind-spinning technical jargon, while still keeping it out of the "for Dummies" range.

Ah, finally a Windows 2003 book with some *meat* to it! I bought Rand's Windows Server 2003 Unleashed book earlier this year when it came out and that helped us get migrated and started with Windows 2003! I've been looking for the next generation book and I was glad to see this Insider Solutions book come out!

Excellent information on Group Policies, security, and management. Exactly what I was looking for!

Get this book if you manage Windows 2003!!!

If you manage or administer a Windows 2003 network, get this book! Chapter 7 on Managing Desktops and Chapter 8 on Administering Windows 2003 Remotely were the most helpful chapters I've read for system administrators!

Great information on daily tasks like automating user creation, automating group modifications, etc. Also provides tips and best practices on things most administrators would not be aware of from normal day to day use.

I'm still reviewing other chapters that are of interest to me, so I'll probably post more later.

This book touched my heart as soon as I read the first chapter.
It's easy to read with excellent continuity. Being in the IT field, I loved how it chronicled the technology. I also loved how it told the truth about the difficulty breaking the glass ceiling even when you're the smartest kid on the block.
This book is honest, moving, and triumphant. I can relate to all of Soraya's emotions - our circumstances may have been different, but the emotions are very much the same. I'm recommending it to all my friends.

An enthralling memoir that I didn't want to end!

I couldn't put book this down and as a rersult I read it until the wee hours. This wonderful book made me laugh and cry and left me longing for more.

Soraya overcame the imposed limitations of growing up in Brazil's male dominated society . She launched the first satellite in Brazil and became a famous Engineer. She came to America where she started all over by washing dishes. Soraya went to create and orchestrate one of the most successful websites for Microsoft.

Soraya is a brilliant visionary with a pioneers sense of adventure.
I wish there were more books of this caliber. I hope that Soraya continues to write more books.

What a message of hope and perseverance!

It made me think on the many things I did not do for lack of courage and now I fell like I need to focus on those goals and just do them. If you are looking for a good read, read this one. It shows how is important to fight for what you beleive in!

Having now read a mountain of IT books I know how lucky I was to have picked this one to be my first! A tie with Sybex's CCNA study guide by Lammle for the best networking book I have ever read! Even with the exam expired this is the best book I have ever read for someone getting started in networking. I am buying up some extra copies for friends and coworkers since they have worn out mine! For an subject where books are outdated as fast as they are printed this should be considered a classic for us old pro's and a must read for the novice.

I have read several books on networking essentials. I was sold on the book when I read his description of the OSI model. Concrete examples were used. His explanations reduced the need for rote memorization. The book is filled with practical knowledge and theory as well as exam tips.

Excellent reading!

Step one in becoming the MCSE is to pass the Networking Essentials exam. In order to accomplish the feat you need the resources to study and this book should be among them. Jason Nash gives you the exam 70-058 in a format that will make learning a breeze.

Nash covers each exam objective and covers it very well. From networking basics, OSI Model and media to design, protocols, administration and troubleshooting along with other topics, you have everything you need to make the grade.

There are figures, diagrams, tables and even step-by-step instructions for the installation of certain items related to exam objectives. The author simplifies the terminology and the reading was very easy and fast.

What I thought stood out the most the IDG's testing software. The software has 3 options, study, exam simulation and adaptive. The cd-rom also comes with Microsoft TECH NET trial version and Micro House Technical Library Demo version. Overall and excellent resource for study.
