Until purchasing this book, I have yet to find a tutorial that wasn't significantly inadequate. This was extremely well done. It is simple, straight-forward and easy to understand. A great book for anyone wanting to get a grasp of digital design/illustration.

If you want to learn digital illustration with Adobe Illustrator 8, this book is the choice to make! I bought it and Classroom in a book at the same time, and this one is much better! It carefully explains all features in a slow, work-at-your-own-pace rate, and covers much more than the adobe book! It gives you the opportunity to try the projects, and also take the skills further for your own interests. If you just want an overview, this is not your book, but if you want a book that will take someone totally ignorant of the program (like me), and get you up to speed doing beautiful illustrations, then you should buy and use this book! It is awesome!

Just received the book today, and read through it. The book is quite easy to read. I've been looking at several clay and masonry books, and really like this one. It even gives directions on building an adobe oven, which I really would like to do (but, in the middle of winter, in Wisconsin, that isn't going to happen). I'm planning on making it a school project with my homeschooled daughters this next summer. I was hoping there would be a few more pictures on showing how to put the oven together, but, I think I can figure it out. The recipes really have got my attention and can't wait to try them out, too.

is Adobe encroaching on 3D animation?
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-03
Photoshop is probably the most common image editing program. Highly refined by Adobe. Yet Adobe is continually pushing the envelope on Photoshop's functionality. This book describes 2 important new usages. For importing and editing video. And for 3D animation. To be sure, there are certainly other packages that do these.

It looks to me that Adobe wants to encroach on their fields. Namely for 3D animation. If you are already in that arena, then the editing abilities of CS3 described here might seen ok but minimal. An initial effort. But keep an eye on Adobe. They may be doing something out of the Microsoft playbook. Where the first products are so-so. But then Adobe will progressively iterate. Easier for them to do this and get large improvements. Whereas existing products like Maya could face diminishing returns.

This is an excellent book for anyone working with Adobe Creative Suite, or Production Suite, or any multimedia professionals. The tutorials are supported by a CD containing all necessary files. It's important that the user has Photoshop CS3 EXTENDED, in order to work with the video and animation files. If you have the program, purchase this book.Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended for 3D and Video

The book is fine but sometimes the instructions seem to assume too much in the way of past learning. The courses I am enrolled in have as much as 1 year before continuing...some review included in the initial lessons would not lose readership.
Mainly, I was disturbed that the binder bound the CD into the glue so badly that I had to clean the glue off it (after I finally was sucessful in extracting it from the package)and this has compromised the disc so that parts are unaccessible to me. If anyone would feel free to replace the disc, I will be greatful.

Professional Examples and Good Info

I am not a fan of most of the Revealed series of books. I am forced to teach from them, and I refuse to use any examples in the books in my classroom. Most of the authors do not have any design sense, and the examples in the books are horrendous. The authors are truely just tool jockeys.

THIS author is a design professional, knows Photoshop, and shares his knowledge in a very straight forward manner. His examples in the book show real world experience and provide the reader with an opportunity to experience what it takes to work on projects that could be for a client.

The book is full of great information and techniques. I highly recommend the book for anyone who has gone through a "this tool does this" book on Photoshop and is ready for more. You won't close the book until you have completed all the techniques, and you will have acquired a wonderful skill set.

I've bought this book since I wanted to get acquinted with AE fast. I've gone through every review on Amazon and the local sites and finally went to the store to buy this one.

It appealed to me in the way it approaches the different concepts (not the easiest ones in AE) and explains them clearly, stating examples and using the 'sidebar' method for indepth information.

I have gotten through to page 140 now and I absolutely love it. I use it both as a manual (continuous reading) and for reference (looking up stuff), and it fits both uses.

I am planning to finish it before Xmas and the only thing standing in my way is my REAL job. One note of critic though - the CD is not packed with goodies (make up your mind if that is a good or a bad thing) and besides that, there are few useable thing on it.

But overall, the book alone is worth the - very low, I might add - price.

The best start to learn After Effect

Are you new with After Effects? Adobe After Effects 7 Visual Quickpro Guide for Antony Bolante really gives you fast steps toward learning more about this product. This book gives you a strong base to start a leading career using After Effects.
Antony Bolante in his book considered that the reader is beginner in After Effects. So, he describes each tiny part in an easy to understand way.

The first chapters in the book describe this great program, anatomy and tools. And shows you with examples how to use these tools.
For example, chapter 12 shows all about creating text and text animation. It starts with setting the workspace for text and goes through creating text, editing, formatting, setting text options and describes in details how to get the most out of text animation, starting with making the text follow a path, using text animation presets and creating animator groups.
The last chapter teaches you how to get your work out to the world by using different rendering techniques in After Effects.

I think this book is the best resource for beginner After Effect designers and animators, as it really gives you a big push toward the proficiency of Adobe after Effects.

Practically indespensible!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-19
I found this book to be well written and overflowing with useful information and example scripts for InDesign version 2. As a scripting newbie, I have found it easy to understand and implement the samples in this book, and to extend them to fulfill my scripting needs. As well, it provides very useful general scripting knowledge about the Finder and AppleScript as a whole.
I have reserved one star for the next edition, which will hopefully remedy the ironically poor presentation and binding of the book (Mine is already dog-eared and battered after two weeks! A testament to its indespensibility - I have not let it out of my sight and carry it everywhere with me in my bag.). Hopefully a smart and wealthy publisher will pick up this book - which is without a doubt the best available on the subject. Thanks Shirley!

Amazon help this book!!!!

Amazon, please get this book up front in the search engines for Illustrator!!!! I stumbled on this book (and the Photoshop version) by accident. I love this book. It is so worn out that I might have to buy another copy. I take it to my Adobe illustrator classes and recommend it to everyone I see. I have to give them the exact spelling of the author and the book because that is the only way you can find the book on amazon!!! (Toni, you might want to change the title for your next edition) The book basically highlights 11 Illustrator artists' background and work. However, the best part of the book is that each artist has a unique way of using Illustrator for their work and each chapter provides instructions and excercises to learn these new techniques. If you want to get beyond the basic instructions provided by the few beginner books available on Illustrator and add more "professional" techniques to your arsenal.... get this book! I also like seeing new and different artists' work. I felt cheated when I got a subscribtion to Illustrator Magazine (now merged with Layers Magazine) and their website. They feature the same artists and artists' work that can be found in the WOW book, so it is refreshing to see other work.

I teach computer illustration and found this book to be very useful as to teaching skills while showcasing many styles. As a teacher I find that doing projects is the best way to learn. Most books have projects in one style-which may appeal to the teacher who selects the book, but not to the myriad personalities in our classes. There were a few technical glitches with the directions but that enhanced our problem solving abilities. I'm hoping to find a new version updated for CS3. Clearly, Toni Toland is a teacher who understands the needs of students today.
