Shimmer Fights the Final Battle -- a review by Vijay

Review Date: 2004-02-27
In the final book of the Dragon Series by Laurence Yep, Shimmer, the dragon princess, and Monkey and Indigo fight the last battle against the Boneless King to save Shimmerýs home. The Boneless King, disguised as the butcher, has evil men who try to kill Shimmer and her friends. The bonless Kingýs allies are very powerful and Shimmer and Monkey and Indigo nearly die When Thorn, the human boy, gets his soul stuck inside the dragon cauldron, Shimmer and her friends find it hard to continue. The Boneless King wants the cauldron because he wants to boil Shimmerýs home, the sea. Shimmer, Indigo, and Monkey make a long and dangerous journey to the dragon kingdom but things get worse, for Shimmerýs brother, Pomfret, has sided with the Boneless King.

The book starts out a little bit slowly but if you are patient you will love it. This is a great book -- it is my favorite book of the Dragon Series and maybe my favorite book ever. I rate this a five star because of Laurence Yepýs great way of describing things, and of giving people actions that fit their personalities. Monkeyýs personality makes him the funniest character in the book -- he makes fun of Shimmer, cheats in games against her, and a lot more funny stuff. The story is full of surprises. People who like mystery, humor, and lots of adventure all in one will enjoy this book.

This is by far the best series for first graders. All five books are truly funny, sophisticated, and enjoyable for any age, yet the simple words are perfect for advanced early readers not yet ready for chapters. There is nothing else like it at this reading level. They should be in every first grade classroom. PLEASE PRINT MORE!

This is one childrens' book I am going to keep forever! It is sweet, thoughtful and teaches children about the multiple meanings expressions can have. I wish the publisher would put this one on the perpetual list. It should be right up there with childrens' classics.

We have been reading this book to our daughter since she was about 9 months old. She loves pointing to the pictures and as she's gotten older (she is almost 2 now) she has enjoyed "counting" the cats, imitating the emotions and gestures of Dragon and the mailmouse, and saying the words as she learns them... it's a great game, and she really seems to laugh at all the right places. Even though this is a chapter book for early readers, I think any child will enjoy the pictures and story, especially if she or he has pets around. I'm going to be getting more of the series with all of her gift certificates from Christmas!

Every one loves Dragon!

This is the perfect craft activity. Cute, fun, simple. I love doing this with my children. I also love doing this with my students as I am an educator. All ages young and old love it. You can use fingerprint art for greeting cards or just making things up. This author is really wonderful. I have many of his children's books.

These are classic books that expand imagination. How could you not love them? I especially like how they encourage kids to draw without making it *too* detail oriented. (Alot can be achieved with a few simple lines!)

Every child WILL love to create and draw!

As a child who loved to draw - but was all "thumbs" in drawing - Emberley's Thumbprintbook was an amazing gift. Suddenly, I could duplicate the art in a drawing book and then go on to create my own shapes and creations. As I got older, I moved onto his other wonderful art books (such as Red, Puple, Orange, Green), but my thumbprints always remained my favorite.

This is a simple but enlivening art book for preschool and elementary school aged kids. I used it over 25 years ago and it is still a huge success with kids today. Don't miss it!

My kids love it!

I say this is more (much more) bloody than others of four ordinary ElfQuest, but it is writed well. There is a story much morer than ever in "Fire & Flight". Kahvi's the new character in this( you see her in picture) , and she is the chief on elkriders, who call themselves Go-Backs. Go-Backs live in shadow of mountains were is a HOME OF HIGH ONES. And with wolfriders they found it. once more i will say: Wolfriders never die. Yes, I know one-eye just did in a "Captives of Blue mountain", but, if you read this, you se how many of Go-Backs die. And that is normal. But NONE of wolfriders. They have armors as much as Go-backs.

But to end this, I tell you: Wendy and Richard teach us in every book , and they tell about life.

The BEST work ever produced from the "Elfquest" couple!

Believe me, you just won't believe this! This is the most skillfully drawn and written part of the whole "Elfquest" series next to the part about the adventures in the Blue Mountain. In fact, you won't see anything like this ever again in any Elfquest tales, nor even the future ones yet to come, I suspect. The great epic of war against the bloodthirsty Trolls of the Great White North begins right after the imprisonment of elves in the Blue Mountain by the witchlike Winnowill - a real teeth-rattling clash of so many different characters, old or new with their individual personalities and differences. In additional, a whole galaxy of the fantastic environment on the far-off World of Two Moons really opens up for the very first time to your mortal human eyes - from the monstrous labyrinth of the Troll lair to the shimmering walls of the long-lost Palace of the High Ones - with a whole bagful of earth-shaking surprises to boot! If you already have this rare book or are lucky enough to get your hands on a copy, I sincerely promise you that you just won't be able to put it down, nor read it just once!

The culmination of the Quest, revisited

For the first time since the original Elfquest story was released as a 20-issue series (from 1978 to 1984), it has been published in the original black-and-white format; the new Reader's Collection printing of Book 4 includes issues 16 to 20 (the last five), dealing with the elves' campaign to wrest control of their ancestral home, the Palace of the High Ones, from a hostile, heavily armed tribe of trolls.

By now much ink has been devoted to the originality and emotional conviction of the Pinis' tale, and of course Wendy's artistic skills need no further explanation. However, it is good to see, once again, the sheer quality - and expressiveness - of the artist's pencil-work as originally presented; some of this was obscured by the mediocre coloring of the editions published since the late Eighties (quite unlike the elegant coloring-work of the earlier Donning versions of the first four volumes, still worth having after all these years).

It has been said many times before, but it should be said, again, that the Pinis demonstrate their storytelling prowess by breaking the conventions of fantasy fiction; most importantly, the fulfillment of the quest is seen to be costly, even in the loss both of lives and innocence; and the battle, though necessary for the elves to reach their goal, is not their be-all and end-all - the truly life-changing events lie further ahead. The climax of this story possesses a nuance and thoughtfulness worthy of "real" fiction, and this, even more than the superlative artwork, gives the tale its substance and emotional power.

A final note on the presentation: some printing errors have unfortunately crept into this Reader's Collection book (as they also have in volumes 5 and 12a (the first printing only) of the series) - many pages are out of their proper order, so if you are new to EQ, try to find and earlier edition of Book 4 to enable yourself to follow the plot correctly. That caution aside, it is good to have the original EQ storyline again - now priced to gain a new audience.

I really love this book.If you are interested in heirloom sewing or just certain decorative techniques then this book is for you. There is even a section on indispensible techniques that every sewer should know such as zipper insertion, bias binding, different kinds of seam finishes, buttons and buttonholes etc.I really liked the free motion embroidery techniques since I love to embroider but my machine is NOT one of those fancy upscale embroidery machine.I learned that all I really needed was a machine with a simple zigzag stitch, the ability to lower the feeddogs, and a darning foot.I highly recommend this book to sewers of all levels since I still consider myself a beginner/intermediate sewer. There is specific directions and tools on what you need to complete your project. You won't be disappointed.Every sewer should own one to add a little pizzaz to their sewing.

I didn't even know many of the stitches in this book existed. As I learned to sew in 4-H as a kid, I thought I "knew" how to sew when I picked it back up 3 years ago, but this book took me beyond my straight stitch, zig zag, and buttonhole repertoire. I honestly sat down and read this book cover-to-cover when it arrived. Each technique is illustrated by color photos, and has information about how to set up your machine, which presser foot to use, which needles are recommended, and which fabrics are appropriate.

There are too many techniques to list here, but there are 7 hem finishes, 2 types of lace making, 4 types of button holes, and 10 appliquéing techniques. The techniques can be done with an ordinary sewing machine, but some additional presser feet are required.

Love this book!

This book shows you how to do most anything with a sewing machine! Have you ever seen something and wondered how it was made? This book will show you! It gives you a list and picture of the tools and step by step directions necessary to complete your project. There are lots of heirloom techniques but also many other techniques seen in modern clothing. This book offers a great way to change something you made from plain to extraordinary!I think it is a must have reference book (and one of my favorites!) For beginner to experienced sewers alike. Some of the things discussed in this book are: Applique, lace making, bobbin work, embroidery and other types of needle wrok, cording, couching, cutwork, fringe, pin tuck, hand sewing, several quilting methods, ruffles, scallops, smocking, shirring, bias, edge finishes, seam finishes, zippers & buttonholes, sewing with ribbon and more! You can't go wrong with this reference book,I reccomend it to all who sew.

I'm the mom of two boys (13 and 10) who usually hate to read. The only books they have devoured are Harry Potter and the Stinky Boys Club series! And the Stinky Boys Club books are amazing because I think four year olds would like them, too. My kids cannot get enough, and even FIGHT over who gets to read them in the car. My 13 year old thinks they are hilarious (he writes his own humor); my ten year old loves to read about burps and farts. These authors know kids!

He will even sit down and read to his little sister! He loves all of the gross and cool things the stinky boys do (who wouldnt love a throw-up recipe?). Sam and MJ are so good at coming up with pranks, kids of all ages will laugh.

One of my friends recommended The Stinky Boys Club because her two kids loved it. So I read them to my 7 and 9 year old boys and they thought the Stinky Boys were the best! They loved the characters and to hear Mom say 'poop' and 'fart', oh they thought that was the highlight. The nicest thing I can say about The Stinky Boys Club is after I was done reading, I noticed both my boys picking them back up and reading the books on their own, what more could a parent hope for! I think the stories are great fun and I highly recommend them for young readers.

Deborah Hopkinson is an engaging author, and is herself a prolific writer of *convincing* reviews. Her story about Fannie Farmer is a favorite of mine & tops a list of holiday gift amusements.

In the proper Bostonian household of the Charles Shaw family, Fannie Farmer was hired as a "mother's helper", more specifically a cook. Mrs. Shaw expects a 2nd child; daughter Marcia is 'put out' by being supplanted by someone who will prepare food & do many things Marcia feels she does *extremely well* - - like polishing lamp chimneys. This lively child, quite capable of getting herself into many scrapes, soon converts to admiration for Fannie & her cooking. The story is divided like a menu *from Soup to Nuts* and includes Fannie's trademark *precise measurements* in the recipe for griddle cakes, a BONUS bound to please all readers.

The 1896 edition of the Fannie's[ASIN:0517186780 1896 Boston Cooking-School Cookbook] played an important role in my childhood. One of Fannie's *hints* incorporated in Nancy Carpenter's hilarious illustrations is: "The mixing & baking of cake requires more care and judgement than any other branch of cookery." Happily, my mother took this to heart and became famous for her F. Farmer chocolate cakes.

Children will discover all sorts of historical objects in the illustrations - - these will doubtless elicit giggles as well as questions and tummy rumbles. Nancy Carpenter has made pen & ink sketches that are oh-so-cleverly *collaged* with period engravings on a computer, then printed and hand colored. Ingenious as well as educational, the pages also have a quaint and comical look. The match-ups of text & illustrations are thoroughly entertaining even when readers are not familiar with the name of Fannie Farmer. I love this book and hope Hopkinson&Carpenter team up again, and soon.

Reviewer McHAIKU says, "Thank goodness Fannie Farmer's cookbook was revered in our 1930's household" but WHERE in the double-spread of impossibly impressive desserts that decorate the "Fifth Course" is Fannie's (& my mother's) prize chocolate cake?

Kids might have seen the Fannie Farmer Cookbook in the kitchen but never known that Fannie Farmer was a real person. This is an obviously fictionalized story, but it does include some actual quotes from Farmer's early cookbook. Nancy Carpenter's illustrations combine Victorian clip art with her own drawings. Not a biography, but a fun introduction to the name of Fannie Farmer and a story about how a young girl gains confidence in the kitchen.

This is a delightful children's book that will appeal to adults, too. It's historical fiction about the real Fannie Farmer. The illustrations are warm and humorous. If your kids like to cook, this is the book for you!

I read recently, in an interview, that the author attributes inspiration for the book to being in excellent health. Said having quit all forms of caffeine freed the mind for more creativity. I say amen to that as I too am free with a little help from my friends at www.s oycoffee.com. They have an excellent coffee sub called s o y f e e that I simply adore. Made from soy that you brew like coffee, it's simply a godsend. I want to thank the author for writing a really great book.

Cute book, but historically inaccurate

Hopkinson has written a clever picture book incorporating tasty recipes, but take the details of Fannie Farmer's life with a grain of salt. Hopkinson has altered the facts to serve her story.

Farmer's first cookbook was an update of a cookbook, written by one of her predecessors at the Boston Cooking School, which already incorporated precise measurement using standard measuring cups and spoons. Farmer's contribution was "level" measurement (as suggested by Marcia) and kitchen-testing of all the recipes by the school's students and faculty.

Read "Fannie in the Kitchen" to your child as an introduction to Fannie Farmer. Then read "Perfection Salad" by Laura Shapiro to learn the true story.

I am an educator who likes to use historical fiction with elementary students. Students love the story of FANNIE IN THE KITCHEN, and we have also used the book to talk about how cooking has changed over the years. I bring in old kitchen utensils from antique stores to show them. (Many kids can't identify a sifter, to say nothing of a butter mold! And when was the last time you saw a doughnut cutter??) We also use the book as a jumping off point to talk about math and measurements.

Although this is clearly a humourous, fictionalized take-off on a footnote to history, students and I also enjoy talking about how young Marcia must adjust to change, as her mother has a new baby. The way the illustrator depicts the developing relationship between Marcia and Fannie is delightful.

As the author note states, Fannie Farmer was one of the first to recommend precise measurements in cooking. What a fun way for kids to be introduced to this 19th century figure

This is a wonderful book to read at the beginning of the school year for social studies. My students loved the book and made their own connections to them learning about other cultures. They had wonderful insight in the underlying themes and now when one of their classmates is not being open-minded, they say fish is fish!!

Great book for predictions

Leo Lionni has a wonderful simplistic style of art that many children relate to. I teach Kindergarten and love to use this book for a prediction activity. We talk about what the fish's perspective must be like, and using "mind movies" to visualize what he must be imagining as the frog describes his adventure. After I read the first recollection of the frog, I have the children imagine what the fish is imagining. I give them time to see what the fish is seeing, then I reveal what he actually saw. We do a quick check- in to see similarities and differences, then I distribute paper to do a "drawn prediction" for each of the following descriptions. My class loves it. Try it at home or in class. Have fun!

Fish is Fish by Leo Lionni is a great book for little kids with great imaginations. In this book a tadpole and a fish are friends. There are many things to learn from this book. I believe that this book should be read by little kids.

The pictures in this book are creative. The pictures are made from imagination. But, it might be better if he used the right colors. The book would really stand out to little kids. Little kids and beginners would love this book for its pictures. It has easy words for beginners to practice reading with.

Their friendship will make you happy even if you're really angry since nothing is better than friendship. For instance, frog left for a long time and eventually returned and fish was not mad. When he came back, he told amazing stories. The story wouldn't be complete without their friendship.

After a day with joy and frustration fish learns, "Frogs are frogs," and "Fish are fish." Fish risked his life to see what frog had described to him. Frog proved to be a hero and a friend. Fish learned a valuable lesson. Frog and fish remained friends.

Fish is Fish is something I definitely recommend. Young kids who are mad at a friend should totally read it. With all the happy events it makes it to a book that's great for friends. I liked how the author put the events in the way he did. Beginning readers should really read this book.

This is a great book if you have small children. They love it because it's fun to read out loud and it isn't so long that you get out of breath. This is a must have that I enjoy reading over and over again and my little ones never get tired of it.
