Readers Books

This is a great set of first readers. The stories are simple and short so my son is willing to work to read the entire book. The endings are funny, so he enjoys reading them over and over again. These books allow the first reader to gain confidence and learn to love reading.

Found this for my just turn 3 year old son. He loves it and read 5 of them the next morning (with the sticker rewards). He had confident problem earlier on and hesitate to read even he knows how to read for a while. This series certainly boost his confidence.

These books are awesome. My daughter is now excited about reading. She especially loves adding a sticker to the enclosed chart each time she masters a new book. Great Set!! I'll be purchasing the other sets.

I found these books to be very fun and easy for my kindergartener to read. She brings home books like these from school but sometimes she has the same one for days. With these books it allows her to read something else so she is not getting bored. She really enjoys them.

This series of books is the best I have found for beginning readers! Most other beginning readers are so DRY and BORING. At this stage, reading is hard work, and the Brand New Readers' stories all have clever endings that actually make it worth the child's time and effort to read! The pictures are bright and lively, and provide plenty of clues for tackling the simple words on each page. Just enough repetition and predictability to build confidence, with a funny little twist at the end to make them smile. If you are tired of the drudgery of BOB books and the Dick and Jane series, give these books a try.

I bought this book for my four and a half year old nephew and he absolutely loved it. I had to read it to him three times in a row. The illistrations are riveting and the comic book style really holds his attention. He loved it and also Captain Raptor and the Space Pirates, which I promptly bought him!

This is currently my four year old's favorite, favorite book. The art is great & the storyline has kept him riveted for nearly a month now. If you enjoyed comics as a kid or even an adult, this book is a great way to introduce the format to your little one!

This is one of our favorite books! After checking it out multiple times from the library we decided this was one we just had to own. The illustrations are beautiful and detailed. The story holds up to many, many readings and is told with humor and just enough suspence to keep my boys (4 & 6) rivetted without being really scared. Our favorite parts are the cliffhanger pages that end with Captain Raptor in peril and the question "Is this the end of Captain Raptor?" My boys shout NO! as we turn the page to see his exciting escape from danger.

My 4 year old loves this book ever since his grandpa brought it home from the library. We have read it probably 100 times and he has the whole thing memorized! In this day and age when young children are exposed to way too much violence and fighting at a young age, this book provides an exciting adventure without that stuff....noone dies, even though there are "weapons" there is no violence, there is nothing too scary, and all the "dangerous" situations get resolved quickly. It's a witty book that is fun to read and has a great twist with the "aliens" being human. The two species are helpful and kind to each other. We love it. I sure hope Captain Raptor will have another adventure...the ending leaves the possibilities wide open! Well done!

My 3 year old loves dinosaurs and space so this book seemed like a no brainer. However, I was very surprised to see such sophisticated comic book style artwork in a book for children. The writing was cool because it will remind parents of the original Star Trek and that only makes it more fun to mimic the Trek cast and dazzle your child with "your" ingenuity.
At first I read the book in installments, every couple of pages has a cliffhanger like an episode of the live-action Batman series, so that we wouldn't be overwhelmed by the long story before naps. But he quickly caught on that the story would continue if he helped me turn the page. He immediately started requesting the story for almost every nap & bedtime placing this great book in his top 5.
Hope to see more from this author & artist!

I must say, for being a children's book, this series has got me hooked! Ms. Watson has definitely done it again. Her story draws the ready in so deep you won't be able to put it down. In this book we get to rescue a lost Jedi Master on the planet of Ilum. Here you get a first person's view of the kind of "trials" a Jedi apprentice experiences. The imagery used is very stunning and could be "felt" at times. I enjoyed this story so much. You won't be disappointed!

The Story
Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ferus Olin have just reunited after the Great Jedi Purge. Ferus Olin, a former Jedi apprentice, is trying to return to the Jedi path. Obi-Wan Kenobi wishes to return to his exile on Tatooine as soon as possible. Trever, a stow-away aboard their ship, wants to stay with them but gets annoyed when they offer him a way to leave.

There is a deep rift between Obi-Wan and Ferus. Ferus wants Obi-Wan to be truthful and to stay with him, but Obi-Wan knows he has to go back to Tatooine. Obi-Wan witholds the knowledge of Luke's and Leia's births from Ferus, which makes Ferus angry.

On their quest, they meet new friends, Raina and Toma, and find an unknown and unmapped asteroid. There is where Ferus plans to make a base for surviving Jedi. Obi-Wan and Ferus discover from their new friends that a Jedi is in the Caves of Ilum, a place where the Jedi construct their own lightsabres. Ferus and Trever rush off to find this Jedi, Garen Muln, leaving Raina and Toma to take care of the asteroid base.

Meanwhile, Obi-Wan goes - to Ferus's great disliking - to stop the investigation of Malorum, an inquisitor of the evil and powerful empire. He wants Luke's and Leia's births to remain secret. He ends up killing one inquisitor, which hopefully makes his secret more safe.

While constructing his own lightsabre, Ferus finds Garen Muln and narrowly escapes with him and Trever. Reunited with Obi-Wan again, they bring the fragile and malnourished Garen to the asteroid. Raina makes a makeshift hospital to help Garen recover.

Obi-Wan leaves Ferus back to his exile on Tatooine. An angry Ferus leaves only with Trever to go in search of another Jedi who is rumored to be held as a prisoner on Coruscant. Obi-Wan now on Tatooine is mentally ready for the training his old master promised to give him.

Recommendations
I'd recommend this book to anyone, young or old. Make sure you read the first Last of the Jedi book intially, so you can find the sequel thrilling and exciting. I gave it four stars because at times Obi-Wan's thoughts were very boring;however, make sure you put this on your list of books to read.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is a former Jedi Master of the old Republic. He is secretive and doesn't use his lightsaber unless completely neccessary. Aslo, he doesn't like to endanger himself too much.

Ferus Olin is a former Jedi Apprentice. He would do whatever it takes to bring down the empire. His Force connection is a little weak because he hasn't used it in a while.

In the book, Obi-Wan and Ferus learn that another Jedi is still a live- Garen Muln. Garen is hiding in the caves of Illum where Jedi go to face their greatest fears and to get the crystals for their lightsabers. Meanwhile, Imperial Inquisitors are searching Palis Massa, where Padme gave birth to Luke and Leia! So, Ferus goes to Illum to get Garen and lightsasber crystals, and Obi-Wan goes to Palis Massa to stall the search. Ferus battles gundarks, his fears, and a fleet of Stormmtroopers to get Garen and the crystals. While stalling, The Inquisitor finds Obi-wan found out and the Inquisitor gets killed running away.

The setting of the book is Illum and Palis Massa. The time is after Episode 3.

The theme is bravery.

I liked it because it was very climactic.

This book and its prequel are great. I am 40 and life long sci-fi reader and this was a very enjoyable series. They have the same reading level as The hobbit but just short and compact. To make these true adult books you would just combine two or three into one volume. I am addicted I have ordered the rest in the series and cannot wait to read more. They should make them into movies.

This book is about Obi-Wan and Ferus.But Ferus has to go to the caves of Illum and concer his fears to get a lightsaber and crystals. Meanwhile Impirial Inquisitors to search Palis Massa were Luke and Leia were born. Ferus also has to battle stormtroopers and weird creachers. Obi-Wan goes to Palis Massa to delay the search.

I am a lifelong listener to "Lamb & Lion Ministry" and Dr. David Reagan. When I heard him mention that he liked this little book, since he knows Revelation better than just about anybody, I knew I really ought to read it.

I have studied Revelation all my life, so I can't say I learned a whole lot. I must say I never heard about the secret message in the order of the 12 tribal names (which gave me goosebumps!), but for anyone who is new to Revelation, I will assure you this book is solid.

As a few other said, the way it is organized is the strong suite of this book. If you just want to see how Revelation 'pictures' Christ--read that. If you just want practical daily application, you can just read 'backpack for the journey'. If you only want to learn the terms, you can just do that in each chapter. I love this organization.

I guess what I like the best was how ALL the chapter pictures of Jesus in each chapter form one final message to all His children at the end of Revelation. This shows how AWESOME our God is in the way He reveals secret information for those who know where to look. This makes all the 'Bible code' stuff look pale in comparison.

I would say anyone 15 and older will find this very, very helpful if you are just getting into Revelation. This won't be the last book on it you'll want to read, but it might be your best FIRST one.

I was always afraid of Revelation. But when my Sunday School class decided to study it, we realized there aren't many SIMPLE books available for those of us who just want to know what it means minus all the jargon and a hundred points of view.

I came across this book online, but didn't recognize from the title that it was on Revelation. Guess that pretty much shows you how much I knew about the last Book in the Bible, huh?

Anyhow, when I noticed how small it was, and that it was written for teenagers (I'm not one, but my understanding is), I decided to give this book a try.

Let me say that this wonderful little book is perfect for people like me. Every passage in Revelation is explained very simply using the Old Testament to give a sound and solid interpretation.

Every chapter is broken down into 'bite-size' sections explaining the key: words, themes, focus on Jesus, and lessons to take with you. The focus on Jesus sections are alone worth what I paid for the book! Wonderful! Even the hard words are explained very simply, and everything is tied into what's going on in the world today. My favorite chapter has to be 'One Cool Kingdom to Come'. I had never considered what the world would be like after the Second Coming.

Let me say that if you want a very simple, very complete, and up to date explanation of the Book of Revelation, that a teenager, new Christian, or mature adult who is just studying the Book can understand, "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!" is absolutely perfect. You can read it through in a couple of hours, but you will find yourself thinking about what it says for a long, long time.

Jerry Parks may have a doctorate in theology, but it has not made him intellectually stuffy, or rendered him incapable of communicating effectively with young people. His commentary on the book of Revelation entitled "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!" was designed to communicate with teens, and it is a smashing success!

I was absolutely fascinated by the book. When I started reading it, I just could not put it down. I was shouting `Halleluiah' by the end of the very first chapter! Dr. Parks is obviously a person who really knows and understands Bible prophecy in general, and the book of Revelation in particular. And, he has been blessed with formidable communication skills.

When I wrote to Dr. Parks to congratulate him on the book, I asked him how he had come up with the idea of writing hit. He replied: "The idea came from my 7th grade, after-school prayer group. They wanted to learn Revelation. To write a handbook simple enough for teens to 'wade' across, and yet thorough enough for new Christians to learn from, was a daunting task."

What a wonderful little book! I got this for my teenage daughter (since there doesn't seem to many Revelation books for kids) in hopes that it would be simple enough for even her mother to read!

The first thing you notice is how user-friendly it is organized--so easy to read. Even with the whole text of Revelation included, this book can be read in a couple of hours.

The next nice thing is that all the 'portraits' of Jesus in Revelation are explained in their own sections. Though I am no expert in Revelation, I appreciated how much the emphasis is on Jesus.

One more thing I liked is the "Backpack for the road" sections in each chapter. These give PRACTICAL suggestions we can use everyday. I never realized Revelation could be so practical.

I guess you can tell I liked this book. It is really PERFECT for new Christians and younger Christians (probably not younger than high school) who really want to study this book. I will use it to teach my Sunday School Class.

Oh yes. You may be wondering how my daughter liked it. She never got it!

I am not a teenager or new Christian--the target audience for this book. I also thought I knew the Book of Revelation pretty well, having studied about the Millennium, the Rapture, and the Second Coming for many (many) years.

So why did I get this book? Partly because if Dave Reagan liked it (see his comment) it must be pretty good (I love 'Lamb & Lion' ministry), but mostly because I so loved the author's other work: "With Joseph in the University of Adversity". But, I soon discovered this book on Revelation is a completely different style. It's also the finest short work on Revelation I've ever read.

I can't add much to what others have said. The winning points of this book are:

*It's simple enough for a 'newbie' but deep enough to teach us all. (The 'message' in the list of 12 tribes is awesome! Never heard that before!)

*It's got a lot of really PRACTICAL things for everyday life. Most Revelation books just explain the verses.

*It's short enough to make an easy-read, but still contains every verse of Revelation and wonderfully organized content.

*It's lightly illustrated (OK, I like this kind of stuff, so there!)

*It's got a primary focus on Jesus Christ--not just as the coming Messiah, but as Revelation pictures Him in SO many ways. This is almost a 'life of Christ' picking up after the Gospels.

This book would make a great handbook (that's what it is) for group bible study, or gift to a young person who is interested in Revelation. HOWEVER, I do think young teenagers might find even this simple book too much. You have to understand some bible to appreciate it, but that's why Revelation is the last book in the bible anyway, don't you think?

(SPOILER ALERT)

On their 5th adventure to find the seven gems of Deltora Lief, Barda and Jasmine must journey to the frightening Dread Mountain. When they find Kin on their way their (story-book characters long thought to be extinct) they meet a Kin called Prin, the only child born since the Kin moved from Dread Mountain. When Prin follows them to the mountain, they must defend her, as well as themselves from the Dread Gnomes and their leader the giant toad: Gellik.

In my opinion this is the best book of the series, it is very interesting and exciting. We learn what poison the Grey Guards 'blisters' are from and a mysterious grave and a message written in blood add to the mystery of the book.

This book is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. You really should read it,infact I bet you would enjoy it to! If you do read this book it will probabably take some time to read but, if you read the whole entire book you will be dying to read it again. Also, you need to tell all your freinds how good it is and I bet they would like to read it to!

Books Books Books. You are always forced to read stupid books for Summer reading. I begged not to have to read them and so the choice was given if I could find a book in the next week to read I didn't have to do summer reading. After searching without success I found a book to replace Summer reading that was the newest of The Deltora Quests at the time. Like the four books before this book cast it's spell and I could not put it down out of interest. It is not exceptional, not the most action packed, not the most romantic and certainly not having the best monsters but I will always consider it my jewel. I'd take Gellick over the Hoboken Chicken any day! That poisin spitting frog on the front, he will set you free.

Our three heroes are on the track of the fifth gem which lies in the dangerous Dread Mountain, but before that Lief has a terrifying vision of his parents home, barren and destroyed.Lief, Barda and Jasmine, continue on their journey, managing the long walk by flying in the pouches of a peaceful species called the Kin.When they enter the domains of dread mountain, they must face poisoin gnomes, grey guards and messages written by the writer's blood.And worst of all they are stuck in the terrifying mazes of the evil mountain!But this only seems small compared to the darkness they feel when they face the fifth guardian, the evil Gellick, who is invincible to destroy.Will our heroes survive the dreads of Dread Mountain.........................................................

As they travel to Dread Mountain, Lief, Barda, and Jasmine find a clear spring. But an ominous sign makes them unsure. They are thirsty, and out of water. They drink, and later discover the entire truth of Dreaming Spring. They also meet the Kin, a fabled creature thought to be extinct. The Kin take them to the mountain, but their only young follows. Can they care for her, and themselves, too? She proves to be helpful, and as they learn about what happened on the mountain, they are imprisoned by the Dread Gnomes, Gnomes that live on the Mountain, under the rule of a toad-like creature, Gellick. The fifth gem, the emerald, is inbedded in his brow.

This is a good book to talk about getting sick, seeing a doctor, taking x-ray and going to the hospital. Not a lot of words, but the pictures say it all. It describes how Franklin noticed a crack on his shell, then went to see the doctor and found out he needed a surgery. Then it shows him telling his friends about his upcoming surgery, then going to the hospital for admission, then to his private room, then surgery, recover..

The most amazing part is how much detail it gets into. For example, Franklin has to go to the x-ray room by himself (he was allowed to take his stuff animal), with his parents waiting outside. Also before he went into surgery room, he had to say goodbye to his parents, etc.

My son was going in for same day surgery, and this was a nice way to reiterate what we had already seen on our tour. The end part where the turtle is LEFT by his parents overnight probably can be omitted, but so can so many other things in books these days. Overall, a nice and non offending book, even for a family who doesn't normally use characters such as these in their normal book libary.

I got this book for my child who was about to have surgery for the first time. It helped my child relate to what was going to be happening. I would definitely recommend this book

This book was a great help to prepare my 4 year old daughter for surgery. Once she was at the hospital, everything was known and already seen in the book and she had fun.. I highly recommend it to relieve the anxiety before a surgery

This book was great for my six year old preparing to go to the hospital.It was really important for him to realize that it is okay to be scared,that it is part of the whole experience,you just need to talk about it.

Very similar to the Alice books by Phyllis Naylor. Gert doesn't get into quite as much "I Love Lucy" trouble as Alice.

Those of you prudes who dislike the Alice series because of the explicitness, won't like Butt Cheek. (I suppose the title would give you a clue to that.)

As in one of the Alice books, Gert's health ed teacher gives the class homework of using a mirror to get acquainted with their bodies. Gert slow-dances with a boy and realizes that he is really up about dancing with her. She dresses as a mermaid on the homecoming float in October and wishes her bikini top was thicker. All sweet, innocent stuff but not for religiously uptight parents.

I think I actually got into the world of a real teenager! Gert is clever with words, witty, smart, and has honest convictions and opinions. I even laughed out loud! And I'm not a teenager; I'm a grandmother who read this book in preparation for a teen granddaughter. I can't recommend this book enough.

It would have been nice to know I wasn't the only one struggling with issues as a teen. Gert tells it like only she can, and I had a lot of LOL moments and even a few ROFL. Great read. Highly recommend to any age.

"One Butt Cheek at a Time" is a book referring to the phrase "Take it one step at a time." The philosophy is that not everyone has feet, and even those that do, some cannot use them. But everyone has a butt. Therefore, saying "Take it one butt cheek at a time" would apply to everyone.

"One Butt Cheek at a Time" is about a girl who goes through life learning new things. Gert hates her name, but learns to live with it. Her best friend, Adam, is gay. They have been friends for many years. Well, Adam ends up with a boyfriend, and soon starts to neglect his friendship with Gert. Gert soon has to find a way to win her best friend back. She tries talking to Adam, but he doesn't seem to understand. Gert ends up meeting new friends when she gets assigned to a group project with her worst enemy, Jenny.

Throughout the story, Gert learns new things about her body. As a class homework assignment, Gert has to look at her private parts, using a mirror. This is so that the female can recognize if something has changed. Well, Gert decides to name hers...

Overall, I would say that this book was very interesting--in a good way, of course. I say this because I've learned some new things by reading "Gert Garibaldi's Rants and Raves: One Butt Cheek at a Time." I really liked how the author chose to use phrases like "Holy-Mother-Of-Fake-Butter" instead of curse words. This book would be best for females fourteen and older.

Gert Garibaldi's Rants and Raves: One Butt Cheek at a Time should be on every parent of a teenager as well as every teenager's reading list. Amber Kizer takes us into the head of a teenager -- for real! Today's American teenagers have more in front of them than ever before in our country's young history. Kizer delightfully tours us through a few critical months in Gert Garibaldi's 15-soon-to-be-16 life, keeping a steady stream of humor without losing that corner of reality. If you're a parent and want to know why your kids act the way they do; or are a teen and need to feel like someone else has been where you are sitting: you need to read this book. Oh and if you're reading it on the bus, be prepared for folks to stare when you laugh out loud. Be advised it deals with mature subject matter. That said, every teenager is already dealing with mature subjects. Can't wait for the next installment!

I found a story, quote, or fact to inspire me for every occasion in this wonderfully empowering book, which would be the perfect gift for any female at any age. I found it helpful for setting goals and kicking the occasional case of the blues. For a while, I read a snippet every morning upon awakening--it certainly gave me a "can do" attitude! Hmm . . .I should go back to that habit.

I absolutely, whole-heartedly recommend this book--one of my very favorites!

Page after page of the book is filled with inspiration and great words to live by and selections from the coolest females around.

I would recommend this book for any age. From the first to the last page, the lessons shared are a great addition to helping girls figure out how to strive for greatness no matter who they are or how they see themselves. If you decide to read this great book, you might want to also try one of the other four in the collection for fun. The other titles are: The Girls' Book of Wisdom, The Girls' Book of Love, The Girls' Book of Friendship, and The Girls' Guide to Life. So get over to your local bookstore, library, or online to get your copy!

I got lost in this book! Very inspiring!

This book signifies every success story that serves as an inspiration to all teenagers. It helps adolescents battle their fears and finally guides them on the road to confidence. By listing stories and providing quotes about success, teens who read the book, can identify themselves with the people they read about and aspire to become like them. It is a success in itself!

Delicious, delightful, delectable!

I'll admit I picked this because of the title, GOING NOWHERE FASTER. Aren't there times when we all feel that way?

Stan Smith has more problems than you can shake a stick at. One problem is his name - "Stan." Who names their kid Stan? But then his parents aren't exactly your normal, run-of-the-mill parents. They are another one of his problems. His dad is a crazy inventor and his mother is an over 6-foot-tall Amazon vegan who attempts to run an organic food market.

Another sore spot in Stan's life is Prarash, his mother's smelly yoga and meditation partner, who practically lives with them. There's also Chopper, the family dog who produces more "gas" than the oil fields of Kuwait. The only normal one in the family is Stan's little sister, Olivia. She's the one bright spot in his existence.

Stan should be thinking about college, but instead is working a dead-end job at Happy Video. It at least gives him the chance to watch endless videos in an attempt to prepare for what he hopes is a future in writing movie scripts. In the meantime, he is stuck riding his ten-speed, helping out in the family business, and hoping for a chance to date the girl of his dreams, Ellen.

As if Stan doesn't have enough problems, he believes he has a stalker. The victim of high school taunting and bullying, he was threatened by Ellen's ex, Chad Chilton. Now the evidence is mounting and points to Chad as the probable driver of the speeding car that almost ran Stan off the road one dark night, as well as the twisted mind that left a mutilated Barbie doll on Stan's steps. These acts of terror, plus slashed bike tires and vandalism at the Happy Video store, are sending waves of fear through the frustrated Stan.

Sean Beaudoin uses witty dialogue and hilarious descriptions to grab readers and get them cheering for poor Stan. The first person style helps readers understand Stan's above-average intelligence and his passion for movies and scriptwriting. This is definitely one I found difficult to put down once I started reading.

stan smith makes weird lists, has a weird house, a weird mom and a weird dad. it's no wonder stan himself is weird. i look up to stan's mom and wish i could be her with all of her convictions.
the characters in this book are well written from the main to the peripheral and you can't help but love them.
the mystery element in this book is shockingly funny. it makes fun of stereotypes while being a stereotype. i laughed out loud and i'll be recommending it to everyone.

1) Stan is hilarious and truly going nowhere faster than anyone I know.
2) Stan's precise descriptions of Ellen make her oh so edible.
3) It's amazing how in touch Beaudoin is with his adolescence.
4) Does there really need to be a 4 when the next step is buying this book?

Though i am now growing older I can still remember the books that captivated me as a child. Now that my children have begun to discover reading I found that Grasshopper Pie is an excellent addition to their book collection and a creative way to nurture and develop their reading skills. The illustrations are also great and help my kids learn and comprehend. "Grasshopper Pie" is a very good children's book and I highly recommend it. My six-year-old daughter was able to practice her reading skills with it and enjoyed the illustrations very much. My daughter and I are eagerly awaiting the next book Mr. Steinberg and Mr. Sinnott do together.

This book is a wonderful collection of poems for children. I love the illustrations by Adrian Sinnott because they match the writing perfectly. They are silly, fun, and creative. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Shel Silverstien.

The poetry in Grasshopper Pie is wonderful for youngsters just learning how to read. The vivid illustrations drawn by Adrian Sinnott make the whole learning-to-read experience a much more enjoyable and fun one. It was so clever to have a grasshopper hidden on every page!! I am first grade teacher in Boston, and the kids in my class loved reading the book and looking at the pictures. Sinnott really inspired them to get into art and draw on their own.

Grasshopper Pie and Other Poems is a collection of whimsical stories by David Steinberg. Brought to life by cartoonist Adrian Sinnott, the tales and illustrations will captivate children and parents alike. My two daughters loved the Grasshopper chronicles-- from the title story to a tale about an upside-down boy and an "Alien in My Soup." My oldest daughter, age 7, found the cover illustration fun to study, with grasshoppers playfully swimming in the kitchen sink, lounging in the silverware drawer, munching on a blueberry pie, etc. Anyone who has children knows that children love looking at the details of any given drawing and spotting the various activities depicted by the artist (there's a "Where's Waldo?" quality to the cover). As my oldest daughter said, "The drawings are cool and the stories are funny." Thankfully, Grasshopper Pie does not have any politically correct adult moralizing, and instead emphasizes children's imaginations. I recommend Grasshopper Pie for children ages 5 to 8, and for adults who wish to revisit the way they once thought when they were young.
