This is a great book. It tells a story about a young red fox and you can almost see through the fox's eyes as you follow him through the forest. You follow Vulpes on his hunts, when he looks for a mate, and when he runs from the hunters and their hounds. A very good story for any fox lover.

I first found this book in my school library when I was six. I read it over and over. Of all the nature books I read as a child, this was the one that I still remember several decades later. I am picking up a new copy to give to my niece for her to enjoy. But I'll read it first!

The Cool Red Fox

This book is about a fox that grew up on with a big family. But as time passed the family grew farther and farther apart. Some of them even died. One of the babies got stolen bye the owl. The mother tried her hardest to save him but the owl got to him first. Just imagine if you let some one just take you little brother and never see him again. Well the red fox took it well. He just wanted revenge for his little brother.

The fox's name was Vulpes and he was very handsome and charming to the lady fox's. All of the forest animals were scared of Vulpes because he used to chase them around, trying to have some fun. I think he is a fox who goes around and tries to have some fun. But when he meets some other fox that is just like him, he will try to play with him but the other fox will just go away and ignore the red fox. He is also very brave because he would pick on the farmers dogs and out run them.

When Vulpes got old he looked around and seen that all the male fox's had mates. But Vulpes didn't so he went out trying to find a mate. He left his home and started to travel around. He found one who was playful and fast, but she didn't want to leave her home. So she was no good. He found another one who he swore was his mate, but she had already been taken. He was not alone for long. Read this book to find out the rest. This is a exciting book. This books mood is exciting and cool.

Like another reader here, I read "Vulpes" as a 10-year-old boy in '62 and loved to race around on my bike pretending to be him being chased everywhere. I grew up in the DC area and I know the general area where the story takes place. I bought this book filled with curiosity and nostalgia for a great kid's read, so 5 stars.

Vulpes is the scientific name in Latin for the fox. We meet him at birth and follow him through his life as a young fox (although a rather glorified one, if you ask me). Vulpes is fast, clever, strong and handsome - perfect for hero-worshipping 10-year-olds! The human side is told through the efforts of several hunters and trappers who want to "bag" Vulpes for his pelt. Like "Never Cry Wolf", there are no good guys or bad guys here - only the struggle to survive for human and animal, even while you're rooting for Vulpes. Jean George puts you inside Vulpes' head as he makes decisions, and she articulates his feelings giving Vulpes a more human connection.

Vulpes eventually finds his mate, Fulva, sires quite big brood of cubs (Vulpes, you big stud-muffin!) and ultimately meets his destiny and fate. You'll never think of foxes the same way again.

Jean Craighead George is brilliant!

If you love nature get all of the books Mrs.George has written. I love this book as well as all the others. Her writting relates to me, I love animals and beleive we need to express their beauty. She is my favorite author and I hope to get all of her books and read them and enjoy every moment. Her writting puts beautiful pictures in my mind. I hope to share them with others and have them enjoy these masterpeices. Vulpes is rather sad but it is still a lovely novel. She shows the hardships and better sides of being a fox. After you read this book it will enlighten you. Even if animals arent your favorite things it will show you how beautiful nature really is. If you absolutely love nature like I do you will enjoy this book just as much. Its not any ordinary book its an open feild of pleasure just like all the others she has written. Get it now and I hope you treasure it like I did and still do.

Speed prayer has its place ~ perhaps at work, on the road but certainly it isn't for those times of deep prayer and prayerful listening to God. This is a book for those who want a deeper richer spiritual connection to God.

Armchair Mystic is an easy read although very thought and prayer provoking. Rather than just rules to pray by Fr. Thib laces humor with sharing his inner joy of a deeper connection with God during prayer and his own blocks to contemplative prayer. He deftly uses his own experiences and needs to show the reader how to obtain and gain from contemplative prayer.

I'm not one for highlighting areas of books but this one is highlighted and highlighted again. It's a book to read cover to cover and then to go back and read and experience a section at a time. Always near my favorite chair or bedside, this book has yet to make it to the bookshelf. It's just plain too useful to put away. It's very much like having my own spiritual director on call 24/7.

The purpose of prayer is to enable us to be more like Christ. Too often, however, prayer becomes simply a laundry list we hope to turn into God's "to do" list! Contemplative prayer calls us to a place where we can be in God's presence simply for the sake of relationship. Thibodeaux gives a marvelous four-part explanation of how prayer evolves. It provides a useful framework to use in examining one's prayer life. He also gives a number of very practical "step-by-step" instructions in how to begin to pray contemplatively. I would recommend this book most highly to anyone wishing to move to a deeper level in their relationship to God.

Fr. Mark Thibodeaux is a spiritual director and retreat leader. When reading this book one gets the impression that he has taken a course on prayer and put it into book form. As such this book is exactly what the sub-title claims, a class on "Easing Into Contemplative Prayer." This book doesn't delve as deeply into the contemplative life as some, but it makes an excellent beginning text, perhaps the best "first word" on the subject I have read.

My suggestion . . . All spiritual directors and retreat leaders should glance through this material and consider teaching a course on the subject, using this as the text. This book is a great inspirational read, but it doesn't stand alone. The retreat leader will need to make some decisions as to the format, location, and duration of the retreat. No doubt the leader will also want to add some supplemental material.

Nhat Hahn's commentary here is simply amazing. He speaks the truth. Listen to his words, take seriously his suggestions and you will transform yourself first and ultimately the world in which we live that is lost in materialism, vanity and suffering tremendously. I'm completely serious when I say that this is the most important book to have come out this entire year. It's zen concepts applied in a practice manner to the modern world.

A Completely Different Approach to Power
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-06
The striking design of this book's brick-red cover with the huge white word, "POWER," dominating all the other type -- is deceptively attractive. I know from talking with a group of teen-agers about books on spirituality that have caught their eye that this imagery is alluring.

But, of course, the Buddhist writer Thich Nhat Hanh defies our normal assumptions about power: that it is something we strive to attain so that we can control and perhaps even dominate people around us. That's the typical model of power in our culture -- power as "winning" in a competitive world.

Anyone who has read his previous works -- or heard his talks in person or on video -- knows that his traditional Buddhist approach to life is to set aside striving and competitiveness. Instead, compassion becomes the glue that should hold together our community.

So, what he really is writing about here is the social force that flows from the kind of authority we build through our exercise of compassion and a positive approach toward life. Some critics have observed that, over the years, Thich Nhat Hanh's books have tended to repeat themselves. And, yes, frequent readers will find the same heart of Buddhist teaching here that we know from other works.

But there are fascinating, fresh anecdotes and emphases in his teaching in this volume. For example, there's an intriguing story here about his return to Vietnam -- after many years of exile -- and the way he approached this extremely challenging journey. There are a couple of practical supplements in the back of the book, including some plain talk about Buddhist principles in the realm of business.

Yes, there is a deliberate twist in the title -- but it's a play on words in the service of wise and compelling teachings.

A wonderful read.

This book has a defined scope. It does not address all the questions of a scholarly mind or an inquisitive mind... but that is not within it's scope. The fact that some reviewers find it does not address all the contemporary questions may be related to a misunderstanding of when this material was written. J. E. Esselmont lived from 1874-1925. Keeping the context of history and the author's personal involvement in the faith, it shares a view of the emerging Baha'i faith by one taken up in the swell of the changes of the day. The author's introduction clearly states that when he first glimpsed the teachings, he was struck by their power and beauty. The author thus disclaims his bias and his position. This is not a dispassionate, dry, recitation of the purports of the day. This is the writing of a man in love with something greater than himself, attempting to put his learning into a context historically and socially.

No book will be perfect, but this one is intriguing. A preview of contents is available by project guttenberg online.

As with many Bahai writings (I'm not a member, but I have been to Bahai functions, read much of their literature, and have close friends in this faith), one doesn't have to be a member to enjoy this book. A lot of what Esslemont says here is practical for anyone. Partricularly such advice as-

"For a child, a teacher is necessary, but the aim of a true teacher is to teach his pupil how to do without a teacher."

"The time has come when narrow national patroitisms should be merged in the wider patriotism whose country is the world."

To be a Baha'i simply means to love all the world; to love humanity and try to serve it; to work for universal peace and universal brotherhood." - Abdu'l-Baha

"Be generous in prosperity, and thankful in adversity. Be worthy of the trust of thy neighbor, and look upon him with a bright and friendly face. Be a treasure to the poor, an admonisher to the rich, an answerer to the cry of the needy, a preserver of the sanctity of thy pledge. Be fair in thy judgment, and guarded in thy speech. Be unjust to no man, and show all meekness to all men. Be as a lamp unto them that walk in darkness, a joy to the sorrowful, a sea for the thirsty, a haven for the distressed, an upholder and defender of the victim of oppression. Let integrity and uprightness distinguish all thine acts. Be a home for the stranger, a balm to the suffering, a tower of strength for the fugitive. Be eyes to the blind, and a guiding light unto the feet of the erring. Be an ornament to the countenance of truth, a crown to the brow of fidelity, a pillar of the temple of righteousness, a breath of life to the body of mankind, an ensign of the hosts of justice, a luminary above the horizon of virtue, a dew to the soil of the human heart, an ark on the ocean of knowledge, a sun in the heaven of bounty, a gem on the diadem of wisdom, a shining light in the firmament of thy generation, a fruit upon the tree of humility." - Baha'u'llah

It was an exciting experience.

I'm not going to get into much detail here, because this a book that you really just need to read for yourself. Verily, every Earthling should read this. Okay, that is a biased thing to say. ( I believe in Baha'u'llah's revelation ) But to view this as a reader and not a theologian, it is a remarkable introduction to the 2nd most widespread and youngest of the world religions. It is a source of the Baha'i view on a very large number of issues that face the world today. I think its easy to at first be utterly confused by the Baha'i faith, but this book should aid you in a comprehension of Its message and what it means to be one of Its adherents.

This is an incredible book which outlines the basics of a new, world-wide faith known as Baha'i. It discusses such topics as:

- The unity of science and religion

- The way to peace

- Health and healing

- Prayer

- Education

- Fundamental justice

- Baha'i history and religion

It contains a number of profound ideas and meaningful insights which can be applied to any life and every society, and offers a basic understanding of this young religion. For some, it leads to still greater questions -- the answers of which can be found in other, further reaching books and studies.

I highly recommend this book.

Most of us believe that emotions have an impact on health--emotional stress often leads to illness and bad environments definitely changes our moods and our health. But...just how do immune defenses work, does the brain really send messages to our body to protect it from the impact of stress or lead us to get sick? How do we get the balance of healthy performance and stress right? This extraordinarily well-written book describes the mechanisms relying heavily on current research and does so with exquisite references to history and descriptions of real situations. Sternberg writes so well that many of the emotions she discusses are evoked for the reader. It challenges mainstream linking without promoting simple-minded extreme new age therapies. It shows how a balanced life can be the healthiest lifestyle. This delightful journey through the body is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand how stress and immune responses really work.

I am a writer who is currently at work on a book on my living through colon cancer. I was diagnosed at age 47 with Duke's C-3 colon cancer. Because of the early onset of my disease, I was three years too young to be considered for routine colon cancer screening, which doctors are supposed to offer to patients when they reach age 50. I was lucky. Even with one year of chemotherapy (due to minor lymph node involvement) medical textbooks and doctors said my chances of surviving five years (a five year colon cancer survivor is considered "cured") were about 35 percent. Now, seven years later, I can say that Esther Sternberg's work validates some key elements of the survival strategy I developed for myself that links health and wellness and emotions.

Sternberg flies in the face of conventional medical wisdom by providing proof that stress can make you sick. She provides evidence that the immune system can be trained, citing the work of Bob Ader and Nick Cohen. And she offers evidence that nerve chemicals or hormones can affect immune-cell function in a physiological way.

This is ironic considering that when you ask a psychiatrist or even a psychopharmachologist how the latest generation of SSRI anti-depression/anti-anxiety drugs (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa etc.) work, the answer is that they are not exactly sure.

The medical establishment in the US tends to hive off the debate about health and emotions (the mind-body connection) to the area of alternative medicine. New age healing and some of the Eastern approaches tend to overlook the scientific connection. Sternberg taps history and science to frame the issue and if it were simpled down to the level of a mass market audience her book would be a best seller.

When it comes to success in school, children cannot do it alone; they need the assistance of their parents. This book consists of many ways that parents can help their child thrive in school. It covers students from pre-school to high school. Areas like study skills, homework, math, reading and writing are covered.

Read aloud to your child. Find books that explore your child's interests. Buy your child an age-appropriate magazine subscription. Check out your local library. Challenge your child with mental math problems. Help your child develop common sense. Establish a homework routine. Require that your child keep a homework assignment book, and check it nightly. Don't neglect your child's need for help because you feel she should be able to do it alone. Teach your child to think. Help your child investigate projects for extra credit. Honor your child's opinions. Join the PTA and attend meetings regularly. Keep lines of communications open with your children's teacher. Allow enough time in the mornings. Know your child's friends. Kiss or hug your child each morning.

This is an excellent book. Even if the parent can do only a couple of things mentioned here, that can only help the child. For any parent of a school-age child, this is very much recommended.

This easily readable book should be a must for parents at the beginning of the school year. It holds many practical applications to help a child be a successful student. If parents were to follow only a portion of the suggested "tips", their children's 180 days in school each year would go much smoother.

The study of faith as presented by Kenneth Hagin was very informative and comprehensive. After completing the study, I came away with a much broader and clearer understanding of bible faith. However, I ordered two copies of the book and both of them fell apart. Obviously, there is a defect in the binding from the publishing company. Other students in my bible class bought the same book from a christian book store and theirs fell apart as well. I needed the book for the class so I had to go ahead and use it. Otherwise, if I had more time to work with, I would have returned it for a refund.

This is a great study of biblical faith. There is also a fair amount of experiences that prove the outcome of faith that Kenneth Hagin teaches within the book. I am half way through it (it's hard to put down) and when I have completed it, I will begin reading it...along with my bible, again.

Every Christian should read! This is an excellent resource for those who are at work building up their faith, learning to receive from God! I am currently using this course as my Sunday School lesson book. The hope and encouragement that I see stirring in the people are very gratifying! This course takes you from the first baby-steps of faith all the way to using your faith for great things. I love it - use it to counsel individuals in my class. A valuable teaching tool!

This is the most awsome teaching on faith I have ever read. Very comprehensive, yet simple to read and understand. By the end you will understand how to walk by faith and believe God's Word is the sole source of Truth. God Bless.

I bought this book a month ago and it has blessed me tremendously!! Kenneth Hagin breaks down the different kinds of faith, what faith is, and how to apply your own faith. He also tells his own personal story about being healed from his death bed and many other experiences he had in the church, such as helping fellow Christians with their own faith. I love that there are questions after every lesson. This helps me to remember and understand what I have been taught in the lesson. I love reading Kenneth Hagin books because he speaks the truth about God. You will surely be blessed by this book and many other Kenneth Hagin books. This is a must read for anyone who is born-again, have weak faith, or for any Christian or anyone else who wants to have a relationship with God!!

I had been looking for a resource to add to our homeschool curriculum that would follow the liturgical year. We have enjoyed many of the simple enriching activities while learning more about saints/important people and our faith.

I bought this book because I like it when our family has some sort of Catholic faith item to discuss at dinner. We were using 365 days of Saints and talking about the saint for that day, but this book is so well organized that I can look up new facts and traditions to bring to our life. I have two older children and two babies, so this book is great for all. I'm just a mom, so probably won't do the little book projects etc, but glad to have them for a reference. I like the organization by season and liturgical year and that there is something for every month.

I love this book. It is very helpful in teaching my child about the Faith, Traditions, and Sacraments of the Catholic Church. The book also is divided into great sections based on the Saints, Sacraments, Feast Days and Holy Days. They also break the book down into months of the year to develope awareness of the events and signifigance of each month. The reading materials and activities are great!

A learning experience for the whole family

This was a great book and it gave me a great "plan" to follow in educating my children about the catholic faith and it also provided great ideas on family projects that we could do to celebrate and understand the deeper meaning of many catholic customs and traditions.

This book is a great book about a teenager dealing with normal teen problems. He goes through a lot of stuff in this book and one of them is that he has to repeat 11th grade. He also just wakes up from a BIG accident that almost killed him. He also gets the girl,(if u read the first book)and Sophie finally calls him. How is he going to juggle them? This is extreme pressure on him, dealing with other teen things. He also does a lot of daydreaming and fantasizing. It is a great book and i suggest all teens to read this book.

I didn't like Thorne's attitude toward sex and girls (he made relationships seem like nothing - a great big soap opera or a game of some sort that he would "win" when the girl agreed to sleep with him) and wondered if he'd get Jonah to change the way he looked at girls. I was worried that book would turn into nothing more than a meaningless string of conquests that left hearts squashed in the dust. But this didn't happen. Instead of copycatting Thorne, I liked how Jonah's views stood in stark contrast to his friend Thorne's. I didn't dislike Thorne quite so much when he and Jonah found a way to continue their friendship. Exposing Thorne's nonchalant girl-hopping and then following it up with Thorne's secret (wouldn't you like to know? Read the book!) and then some of Thorne's feelings (which you'd never guess about) made the story deeper and more real. I think I have it figured out who Northgirl999 is... I wonder if I'm right? I'm worried about Jonah doing the same thing to Posie as his buddy Thorne did. Not that I don't like Sophie, but considering Jonah's fury at how Thorne treated Posie, you'd think he'd be more careful of what he's doing... Also, what is up with Posie? She jumps from guy to guy as easily and quickly as some of the guys in the story, only she has never been portrayed as a cheater. What is she really feeling? Does she really love Jonah, or if another guy came along and got Jonah into trouble with her, would she latch on to the new guy? Hhhhmmmmm...

This is by far the best book that i have read in a long time. It contains all the aspects of the life of a teenager. It is about a Junior/Senior named Jonah and its about how he goes about his everyday life and how different people influence him. He makes a lot of new friends like Posie and Sophie, and many others. The author uses great imagry to describe the characters and it almost feels like u know them personally. After i had read the first book of this trillogy i imidiately ordered the next to see what was going to happen to Jonah. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO IS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 14 AND 17.

Jonah Black is back and with more to tell.

Yet again we meet Jonah Black and start to learn more about his life and what problems he has in it.

Jonah is just getting out of the hospital and while he is there he finds that someone has giving his roses there, at first he thinks is Cecily but later on he finds out it wasn't.

Jonah is now having to deal with the fact that Posie is going out with Thorne and he hates that. But Jonah does manage to figure out a way to get Posie and he trys to do that. All the time while he is doing that he still thinking about Sophie.

Finally after Jonah learns some shocking news about Thorne does he tell Thorne about the true reason why he got kicked out of the school.

But the true question still is who is NorthGirl999 and will Jonah ever find out.

This book is a great second book and I can't wait to dive into the 3rd and 4th ones and find out much more about Jonah Black and his life.
