This is by far the best mother's devotional I have ever read! I just can't get enough of this book. Once I'm done reading it I find myself reading it all over again a few months later. I love how I can relate to Mary in her readings. This book was just what I needed this last month! Her book is such an encouragement to me and I am so thankful that I bought this book. Thank-you Mary! I am planning on buying more books from this author.

Before you buy this book, know it is a DEVOTIONAL. I thought it was a parenting book. It's not. It's still a fantastic book, just not what I expected.The author is funny and down-to-earth. She highlights the divine in the mundane, drawing readers into a more personal awareness of God in the midst of everyday chaos of parenting. It's a drink of cool water to a parched soul.

The chapters are short, most just three pages. Each begins with a personal story then evolves into an applicable reflection of what God wants for us. It's the perfect format for busy moms.

Final Thoughts: Intellectual, witty and relevant. Definitely recommended.

This book has made a huge difference in my outlook. It gives me encouraging words to think about the entire day as I embark on the challenge to be the best mom, wife and person I can be. I highly recommend it!

When I first read this book as a young Christian, I found it convicting and encouraging in a way that truly challenged me to call upon the Lord to transform me into the mom He had called me to be. I was very touched by the honesty with which Mary DeMuth writes with. She sincerely shares her struggles as a mom and how she finds strength in the Lord to fulfill this blessed calling. I was really able to relate to her and found myself nodding my head again and again as I recalled very similar situations with my own children.
I found this book to be such an encouragement and such a challenge to be a better mom (through Christ who strengthens me) that I wanted to share it with other moms. Now, my friend and I have begun a Mom's Helping Mom's ministry, in which we get together with other young moms and we all use Mary DeMuth's book as a devotional at our meetings to discuss the issues relating to being a mom and to encourage each other as we fulfill this high calling and find strength in the Lord to raise these precious gifts that He has blessed us with in a way that glorifies His name.

I highly recommend Ordinary Mom, Extraordinary God...and I recommend that once you read it - you don't hold on to it - but pass it on to another mom that you know will be touched by it!

There's nothing ordinary about this book! I truly LOVED reading it! I just bought it a couple of weeks ago and have already ordered two more copies to give as gifts. It's just too good not to share. Mary speaks from the heart with humor and passion as she shares her real-life experiences in raising her family under the guidance and grace of God. As a mother of two young children, I will undoubtedly turn to Mary's encouraging and inspirational words again and again in the years to come.

A friend loaned me this book to read when I traveled to my parents to help my father take care of my mother who suffers from Alzheimer's.

This story was tender and beautiful. Very well written. A must read for anyone who has a family member suffering from Alzheimer'. A caregiver might feel better understood and even have a chuckle or two.

I read this book as part of Greenville, SC's Amazing Read program. The book tells the story of 3 generations coming together to battle common problems: Alzheimer's, car accident, single parenting. It is told from the father/grandfather's point of view, a simple housepainter. The prose flows like an easy conversation over coffee. No long descriptions of how the rain fell through the trees, but enough details to create an image.
The story has twists and turns to keep the reader interested, but the story is a bit predictable by the end. As I finished reading, I felt the characters, understood them, loved them and learned from them.

With elegantly-crafted understatement Tommy Hays compassionately relays problems spawned by "Alzheimer's in the family." At the same time, he manages to sensitively honor the reader's comfort zone. The result is a triumph for the author, for the reader, and for characters whose real life challenges and choices point the way for the rest of us. Thank you, Tommy Hayes.

This is a beautifully, sparingly written story about an older couple dealing with the changes, sadness, and humor, too, that Alzheimers' disease brings to a relationship. There are several love (romantic and familial) stories in it; the husband and wife, the grandfather and his grandson, 2 fathers and sons, and an unmarried man and women. In spite of dealing openly with the the effects of Alzheimers' disease on family members, this is NOT a depressing book. It is sweet and hopeful, yet poignant and sad at the same time. I highly recommend it.

We all probably know a Prate Marshbanks. He's a good person who thinks he's as tough as can be, but in reality he's a softie. Family comes first, not afraid of a day's work, intelligent but his greatest asset is common sense. We all know the type, and if by chance you don't, Tommy Hays creates this exact character in his book THE PLEASURE WAS MINE.

THE PLEASURE WAS MINE tells the story of Prate, who in his senior years has to take care of his wife Irene. Irene was once the most beautiful girl in the town, a lawyer's daughter, and English teacher, someone who in Prate's estimation was too good for him. Yet the two have a wonderful marriage, raise a son together, and at least as far as Prate is concerned, the two never fall out of love. This love and dedication is being tested now that Irene has Alzheimer's. Prate spends most of his days caring for Irene, but his routine is disrupted when his son Newell calls and asks him to baby-sit for Jackson, Newell's son. Prate reluctantly agrees believing his widowed son may need some time away but he wonders how he's entertain a sullen, bookish, and somewhat quirky young boy like Jackson. The two bond, and this bonding creates a new family dynamic.

The beauty of this book is due to Tommy Hays' carefully structured writing. This book could easily go in at least five different directions, but Hays is careful to present the story through Prate's eyes and by doing so, we become immersed in this man's story and grow to feel for him and the other characters in the story. Readers may think that a husband caring for an ailing wife with Alzheimer's is similar to the story of THE NOTEBOOK, Hays avoids sentimentality. Prate always has a bit of an edge which keeps him real and anyone who either has cared for someone with Alzheimer's, or knows someone who has, will appreciate the accuracy of the story and Prate's emotions.

I know I'm not the only reader who fell in love with this book, and it's my guess that others will too. Enjoy!

If students plan to do well in class, this is definitely a got to have study guide for any student taking beginning Psychology.

This is a very interesting text!Chapters are a bit long & boring at times but overall great material. I just wish my professor didnt read the text word for word! Not the books fault! LOL

When asked to choose a book to use in my Introduction to Psychology class, I was somewhat unsure because there are armadas of books out there. For students, I think someone should take in price as a factor, look at what they are given in the way of student-aid and multimedia, and how good the book really happens to be. I initially chose this book because I knew someone that had used an older version of it and said that it was a good choice and, well, I couldn't be happier.

As far as the cost of the book, it really isn't bad for a new book. It keeps up with newer stuff, not really leaving you behind with outmoded material you really shouldn't learn anyhow. It also adds in newer elements to the study of the subject, allowing a student to feel out the subject without feeling like they've stepped onto the Intro bandwagon. This isn't to say that all the beginner's concepts aren't covered because they are - this is simply to say that the book takes the subjects and runs with them a lot more than most beginner material. Another thing to take into account if you are teaching a class are the number of chapters vs. the filler material. With classes becoming shorter now (many schools now have a 14 week series v. a 16 week one) the material needs to be able to sink in faster.
Happily for the students reading this, the material will do that AND the book will come with A LOT of help to making testing a positive experience.

One nice thing that comes with the book is the Concept Charts, making it east for people to see the ideas "come to life." It is easier to explain how a science goes from an idea to a modern approach by placing it in a nice graph, and the points that are added make it easier still to separate one person from another. The Chart book follows along with the book amazingly, too; I looked into it first off and saw that it took into account everything the Chapters were trying to say.

Running through the book, it covers: Evolution of Psychology, Researching, Biological Biases for Psychology, Sensation and Perception, Variations on Consciousness, Learning, Memory, Language and Thought, Intelligence and Testing, Motivation and Emotion, Development across the Life Span, Personality, Stress and Coping, Disorders, Treatment, and Social behavior. Combine this with the CD, web help, and you've got a full book of concepts.

If your teacher picked this out, MAKE SURE you get the concept charts with your book. It is good, will help you if you are going into any field dealing with psychology, and is a book that is worth keeping instead of recycling.

I bought this book a month ago at the airport for a quick read on the way to a business meeting. Being in sales, I am always looking for a quick pick-me-up to get me moving in the New Year. I was completely shocked to be moved to tears in the first chapter. The exercise of finding my "Universal Assignment" or true purpose in life caused me to dig deep and really think about what I am doing with my life. Subsequent chapters gave me a roadmap and hope that I will be able to achieve my ultimate goals for my family and career, while motivating me to leave a positive mark on the world as well.

I found this book incredibly inspirational and the exercises caused me to create an action plan and not just read it and think "What a great idea!" put it down and never think about it again. So many self-help books are long on details of how to improve but short on an analytical framework that would help a reader to remember much about the book even one week later. Author Simon Bailey has skillfully used the analogy of each of us being like a diamond to provide an easily understood framework for polishing our god given blessings.

This is a power packed gem because of the way Bailey builds self-help concepts around the diamond analogy. For example, Zig Ziglar was the first to introduce me to the "wheel of life" concept wherein one evaluates ones status in eight different aspect of one's life (e.g., spiritual, physical, financial, etc.). Bailey has beautifully retrofitted that concept to tie into his diamond analogy.

I especially liked the author's chapter on "authenticity." Many are writing on this subject, but some who do so give me goose bumps what with their stretching of their credentials even as they challenge the reader to be authentic. Bailey seems to be much closer to the authentic he pleads for us to be than some of the new wizards on the self help scene. I felt incredibly comfortable with the author, his personal stories, and his positioning of where he is on his life journey.

Likewise, his comments on investing in relationship capital were very thoughtful and seemingly from the heart.

I could go on and on, but doing so would have me standing between my review and your reading this gem. Sure you will find more comprehensive self-help books, but few provide a better framework for a life companion. Definitely a five star book.

Why buy Sasparilla? Well, the wording is lyrical and fun to read aloud, the pictures are clear, colorful and creative, and its fun to see what the Fink is doing! Both my girls giggle at every page, and even my 9 year old stops by to listen when this one comes out!
This was "our favourite book" in my review of it in 2001, and it still is! I started reading it to each of my daughters at 10 months. Now they are 9 and 4 and the little one still asks for it all the time. Both of them absolutely adored it.
This is the ONLY book they were both wild about from the start. And they are really different kids. If you have little girls, get it!

This was SUCH a cute book - really refreshing and fun to read. Great illustrations and a very catchy style. I bought it for my one-year-old neice and her mother put it on the mantle because the cover is so charming. Compliments to the twin authors and illustators!

I gave this book to my friend's growing daughter who adores SHOES! I've been told it's been read everyday for 3 weeks straight now! Ironically, the Fink is her favorite. Look out Teletubbies, and hang on to your red purse, Tinkie Winkie...here comes the Fink!

This simple book is anything but simple, You get God's word and a wonderful story that can be applied to anyone. the recipe's were a nice bonus. My son even thought what a nice devotional book this was. May God bless everyone who reads it.

I just received this book yesterday but have already looked all the way thru it glancing at the recipes...Which look very good. There is also little stories and bible verses..A good collection to my cookbooks.

I find this book to be such a great help to me in my daily life, I recently lost my 18 year old grandson in a car wreck, it's a great lost to our whole family, but Wanda's devotional has really helped me in many ways. I recommend this book to anyone, it can only inprove their spititual life.

I love this devotional! It helps me to slow down and enjoy life and all God has given to me. I have gone through the book once already, and now I am reading it again, but this time I'm sharing it with my husband. He is also enjoying it. The recipes at the end of each devotional are a nice addition. I have even tried a few!

This is a delightful book that helps me to start my day "simply" every day. The stories are a gentle reminder to appreciate God's gifts in every moment. And the recipes are just wonderful. I have made the melt in your mouth biscuits so often that my book is permanently creased in that spot! And my kids love the haystacks and double treat cookies. As my name says, I am a "cookbook junkie" and have over 300 or so cookbooks. I have to say that this book will definitely be one I don't just browse and file. It is packed with so many delicious (and usually simple) recipes that you will have trouble deciding which one to make first! The pictures are mouth-watering and each recipe has some personal quotes by the person(s) submitting it, just as a friend would do if sending you their favorite recipe. These can tell you different ways to prepare it, short-cuts or substitutions or just relate how their family liked it. There are "from scratch" recipes as well as ones using convenience foods- something for everyone. I have several "collection" cookbooks from many magazines and would say this is the best one I've ever seen! The only thing missing would be nutritional info and, for some of the recipes, I really appreciate not knowing! They are out of this world! You will not regret buying this book--in fact, I'm ordering a second copy for my daughter!

I have been using this book for over a year. The copy I bought on Amazon was a gift for my mom. It has a combination of classic Southern favorites and newer updated recipes. Many of the classics are the exact same recipes published in The Southern Living Cookbook (1985) and The All New Ultimate Southern Living cookbook (1999).

Every recipe has at least one Cooks Chat blurb saying how good the recipe is, and sometimes a new variation that makes it even better or a preparation tip. The recipes are easy and several use convenience items such as mixes, frozen pie crusts, refrigerated dough, canned and bottled items, and pre-packaged produce.

I love this cookbook!!! All the recipes have that extra something that makes you want to get out the good china.

I own a LOT of cookbooks (more than 400) and am both a serious home cook and an inveterate "arm chair" cook. Some cookbooks are great for reading; some are great for cooking. A very few are great for both. This one fits in the latter category. But even more importantly, EVERY recipe I've tried from this book during the first week I owned it, deserved to go into my "keeper" box--things I'll make again and again and that I would be proud to serve not just to my family, but to guests. If you are going to own only one Southern Living cookbook (which I do not advise; the more of these you own, the better a home cook you are likely to be!), make it this one.

this has quickly become my favorite cookbook. i had borrowed this book from the library and made a couple of the recipes prior to buying it. i had to have it. love, love, love everything i have made from it. a must have.

I have about 5-10 books teetering on my bed at any one time, each one clamoring for attention, and I have to say this is the one I reached for in that precious half an hour of chill time before sleep every night. It was so refreshing to read a genuinely funny book that is NOT SNARKY (it's so easy to be a snark, harder to be funny and human). I really look forward to Mitchell's next book!

Kudos to Mary Mitchell for sharing Starting Out Sideways with all of us! Her first novel is both funny and heartwarming! Ms. Mitchell does a great job capturing the audience's attention by giving life to some wonderfully likeable characters. Her Long Island descriptions and characterizations were right on the mark and I loved the opportunity to see glimpses of many real life people that I've known in her characters. She weaves a delightful tale that is bound to make you smile!

Mary e. Mitchell's novel `Starting out Sideways' is not just a fun book to read but a book that makes you think and wonder why things happen in your life. I could relate to this story, of love, anger, anxiety, confusion and humor. I read of towns I know and have lived in. Rosie Plow reminded me of me, even when it came to her weight problem. Her character development happens so easy that you don't know it's happening, until you say, "Well, son of a gun I didn't know that was going to happen." She has twists and turns with every chapter keeping the reader wondering and asking questions in their mind, then she ties those loose ends up toward the last quarter of the story.
Her way of handling the mentally challenged person is done with grace, comedy and deep down emotion. Thank you for reminding me what it's like to be in a `real' family. Kudos' to you Mary e. Mitchell. Hurry up, I want to read your next novel.

Roseanna Plow is one of the wittiest, wisest, most enjoyable characters I have read in ages. With humor she tells her tale of her cheating husband leaving her for Inga, her best friend. Roseanna's Ma vexes her with the most hilarious antics that are to "aid" Rosie. Her clients, mentally disabled people being acclimated to life in the main stream, all provide hilarity as well as warmth. She discovers a very hidden secret that totally unnerves her and yet the book never bogs with "woe is me" ideology. The cast of characters that support Rosanna are truly just that....eccentrically funny characters.

This is such a wonderful read; if you need your attitude adjusted, need a good laugh and a solid lesson in accepting life, or if you just want to have a breezy time putting your life on the back burner, then this book is tailor-made to fit.

Wonderful story that you should treat yourself too.

How to describe this book?.....The characters are so diverse and all of their experiences so easy to relate to....as someone said, you feel that they are, or have been, a part of your life/neighborhood at some point in time.

Rosanna's "chosen" surname (Plow) was appropos, for she seemed to be "plowing" through her life, with all it's twists and turns, and yet, learned invaluable lessons along the way. Mary Mitchell dealt with common life issues (death, the mentally challenged, infidelity, divorce, conflicting family personalities, etc.) with UNcommon insight. The issues were deeply moving, but handled with the ability to see the humor in even the most difficult situation.

An easy, enjoyable read.

I must say that this publication has become the sole reason for the efficasiousness we are experiencing in my company's financial decision making. I was not sure how behavioral finance can help me and my company, but after reading a few chapters it all came together. I am positive that our margins will increase by 25-35% over the next 3 years. If I had a boss, he would give me raise for applying this book to our company's financial lifestyle. But I am the boss, so I will give myself a raise! Seriously, thank you Dr. E. Ted Prince for developing and sharing such genius work.

Socrates said "know thyself." This book gives you the power to do it. Mr. Prince's financial signatures are the keys to understanding how your personality directly affects your financial behavior. And this applies not just to the financial ramblings of major corporations, but how you handle finances in your personal life as well. Well written and easily relatable. A fascinating read!

This book is an excellent read for anyone who wants to better understand the key factors for building and maintaining a successful business. By examining the key traits and behaviors of executives, which combine to form the concept of "financial signature", Prince leads the reader to understand exactly how this signature impacts his or her organization. He also uses real-life examples to more clearly illustrate the concepts, including the successes and failures of many famous leaders in today's business world.

Beyond merely presenting these concepts, Prince further teaches the reader exactly how to determine his or her own financial signature and how to apply, and potentially adjust this signature, in order to be a more effective and successful leader. Anyone in a management position will benefit tremendously from this book, as it will teach all readers how to better understand their own management styles and more effectively align their actions with the overall goals of their organizations.

Having recently started a small business, I found the concepts in this book to be extremely valuable. As I was reading the book, I could see my own financial behavior laid out in the many detailed examples of CEOs and other business leaders. The concept is relatively simple: adding value versus spending money. The brilliance is in being able to find out where you fit in. This book has actually helped me to see where my danger points lie and how to correct them.

Finally there has been research done to accurately predict something in the financial world. And what better field to be accurate in than human behavior. It is obvious we make the most errors, and our money is always in the hands of someone else, who is relying on someone else, who is relying on the CEO. I must say that this book has opened my eyes greatly into a path I never knew existed.

Good dictionary, tons of words, thorough and comprehendable definitions, good resources in the back. Can't go wrong with this dictionary. It is being used by 13 and 14 yo's and mom and dad as well!

I always had a liking for webster's Dictionaries so on seeing one that I liked on Amazon I couldn't resist. What excited me more was that I discovered from the specs. given that it comes with the same dictionary on a CDRom. It's interactive so when studying, one can highlight and paste definitions of words directly. Again, a wonderful product being offered by Amazon. Thanks guys !!

The dictionary is terrific, but the CD-ROM does not work with my Apple Operating System. I am sure the CD-ROM is as good, but can't use it with my Mac.

This is an excellent resource. The disc is great and can be downloaded into your computer. I don't know how I survived first semester without it!
