Best of its kind for a forgotten art

Hands down this is the best reference of its kind. Though somewhat dated, the material is as pertinent today as it was 20 years ago. There is no better introduction to the vi, ex, and sed editors and troff and nroff text processing tools. Those just scratch the surface of the power provided in the UNIX text toolset. At the end, the authors do a fantastic job of detailing how the tools can be all brought together using the make utility to ease any text processing job. Despite the updates that have given us the WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) approach, these early text processing tools are still unmatched in their processing capabilities and extendability. This book will give you the insight and introduction you need to start making use of them today.

Using Intellicad 2001

Essential for IntelliCAD users
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-06
This book has two audiences:
(1) Those who are exploring IntelliCAD as an alternative to AutoCAD or augmenting an AutoCAD shop with less expensive IntelliCAD seats.
(2) IntelliCAD users.

For the first group this book comprehensively explains the similarities and differences between AutoCAD and IntelliCAD, including the limitations of IntelliCAD and some workarounds.

If you're an IntelliCAD user this book is both a tutorial and a technical reference manual. It leads you through installing and configuring IntelliCAD, and how to use every feature, both basic and advanced. Like most high end CAD programs IntelliCAD has a steep learning curve, and the bulk of this book is sequeced as lessons to train you in how to use it. If you're coming from an AutoCAD environment the learning curve will be less, but this book is still valuable because it has numerous comparisons between AutoCAD and IntelliCAD throughout.

It also covers advanced features such as file types, how to effectively use the programming languages built into IntelliCAD, and a plethora of advice and tips on digitizers and other programmable tools used in conjunction with then program.

If you are responsible for developing training materials or training IntelliCAD users, especially transition training for former AutoCAD users, this book is a ready-made resource that can be used as is.

Merging shapes works more efficiently than USING QUARKXPRESS 4's Bezier tool to draw complicated shapes. Directly appending colors, dashes & stripes, H&J, list and style sheet settings from previous documents gives consistency and saves time. Hexachrome color prints more vibrant, wider color ranges if the print shop also handles high-fidelity color. These are only a few of the countless valuable explanations and tips from expert Kelly Kordes Anton. She came up with the shortcuts for Steven Bain's FUNDAMENTAL QUARKXPRESS 4, and here is her own encyclopedic help desk. Her superbly written and indexed book consolidates Barbara Assadi et al's QUARKXPRESS 4 FOR DUMMIES, David Blatner's QUARKXPRESS 4 BOOK FOR MACINTOSH & WINDOWS, Galen Gruman's MACWORLD QUARKXPRESS 4 BIBLE, William Harrel's QUARKXPRESS 4 IN DEPTH, and Elaine Weinmann's QUARKXPRESS 4.

If you develop for Visio, buy this book

I have several Visio books - most are useless for developers (people who write VBA/VB/VC++ code for Visio automation). For those who develop for Visio, this is a must-have book. If you're using 2002 or 2003, the same author has newer versions of the book for those. He also lets you download software tools to use - one awesome one is a VB DLL/VSL adapter. But even without the extra software this book goes into more detail and depth than any other, except the Microsoft Devloper book (which is free online). And it's a great companion to the Msoft book, and covers things it doesn't. (including highlighting the bugs)
All in all, an excellent book.

Offers A Gold Mine Of Web Development Resources!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-05
One of my favorite Web development resource tools is Web Design Resource Directory written by Ray Davis. Although this guide has been out for several years it still offers plenty of helpful information on Website design products and services and where Website designers can obtain them.

This directory offers a gold mine of Web development resources. Readers have access to helpful HTML scripts, tips, and design considerations, Web graphics format and standards instruction, online clipart sites, font libraries, soundclip sites, software programs such as HTML and graphic image editors, and information about advanced Web programming languages such as CGI, JAVA, ActiveX, PERL, and VBScript. Helpful resource listings offering information on marketing, search tools, and polishing your skills are included as well. A review of every listing is provided too!

The CD that accompanies the book contains the complete hyperlinked edition of the book, Web browsers for both Windows and Mac platforms, and some leading FTP, compression, e-mail, newsreader, and graphics programs. Keep in mind though that since the publication of this book in 1997 new editions of these programs have been released! Otherwise, don't hestitate to put them to use!

This book is hightly recommended for Website designers of all levels of skill and experience who want more than merely a listing of Website resources. The author's commentary provides helpful insight that will encourage readers to embrace a wider selection of the better Web design tools available on the market. If you can find a copy of this book on a bookshelf somewhere - grab it fast!

If you have Macintosh Frontpage 1.0, you NEED this book!

Those of us who have Microsoft Frontpage 1.0 for Macintosh NEED this book. The Microsoft manual that comes with the CD is one of the least-informative books I have ever read in my life. Trying to find help using this program has been even worse. Anyone who needs help with Frontpage for Macintosh version 1.0 needs this book. It may the be the only help they can get! It gives great examples and figures to follow as well as being easy to read. You will find yourself immediately able to apply the information you come across. You will save yourself a lot of time and headaches!

My Book of Choice on Web Graphics Theory
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 1997-10-27
Timothy Webster provides a superior treatment of web graphics fundamentals, using clear and practical examples. Writing for both Windows and Mac, his Web Designer's Guide to Graphics first lays down a tight review of graphics file formats, monitors, color models, bit depth, resolution, palettes, anti-aliasing, compression and interlacing. Not stopping there, he gives pragmatic examples of when to use PNG, GIF and JPEG formats.

The book's one major weakness is that many of the color screen shots used do not hold up well when printed. The occasional ineffective 1:1 screen shot is used to point out details which would only be recognizable if printed at the same size as its screen display counterpart. This problem, present in many of the current web design books, could be easily resolved by zooming in on the screen to show the slight differences in detail.

That being said, out of all the many books that are available on web graphics, there are none that I've found which are more comprehensive and accurate than this one.
