Very good book for learning color
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-23
This is a really good book for learning about color. The pictures and examples are very useful and the glossary is good for quick reference. It's small enough to carry around for reference, unlike some other color books. It's concise and easy to understand. The author does not try to talk over your head or impress you with color jargon. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the printing or graphics field.

An excellent tutorial for prepress support people
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-03
I work for a major supplier of prepress hard- and software. It is often difficult to find accurate extensive backgroud information on essential technologies like PostScript or PDF and this book fills this void perfectly. It is a goldmine if you want to look beyond the simple "select this, click that" type of manuals and take an detailed look at the way PostScript, drivers, printercommunication,... work.

great introduction; tips for old hands as well
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-25
What a great little book! This slim volume has more genuinely useful information than many larger (more expensive) books. If you are beginner to creating music from sampled loops, this will be a great introduction, giving you an overview, reviewing the various tools, and passing along tips. (I was initially put off by the multiple reviews - for example, of Live versions 1, 2, and 3 - but they do actually build upon each other.) Both beginners and pros will benefit from the no-nonesense sections on copyright, creating your own loops, suggested libraries, mixing, and other tips and tricks. The writing style is very friendly - this is not a textbook - but again, manages to tell you want you really need to know without wasting your time. The CD contains demo versions of some of the programs mentioned, and free loops. An excellent find.

Great with details
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.

The details on doing the projects are good and most measurements are stated in imperial and metric which is useful. Both the computer steps and hands on steps are understandable. I really like the humor with the teddy bear shirt and the Andy Warhol style shirt is going to be given alot this Christmas.

"I've been real happy with the Illustrator tutorial. It's the best presentation of trapping I've come across; even better than bringing someone into the shop to train them. I've found it helps my customers avoid AH charges and author-instigated trapping problems." David Withers Moody Color Graphic Service, Inc. Roanoke, VA

Just Right
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-04
This is a rare book in that it actually teaches how to make images for Web pages, as opposed to just showing different cool Photoshop effects. Most graphics books go through the different features of popular image software, but leave you to figure out how to apply that information in making cool sites. This book focuses on the end product and includes exercisies to give practice. Although it is a textbook, the style is not academic. The situations and examples are all from real-world environments that you might find yourself if you created Web graphics for a living. I would have liked to have seen more on vector software such as Illustrator and Flash, but that minor issue doesn't diminish the value of the book. Side note: The table of contents that Amazon lists book does not match what is actually in the book.

A Good Text-Book to Train the Future Journalists
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-18
The contemporary technologies gave new possibilities to train students in journalism using such books. Specialy it is important for freshmen. Knowledge of the technology which is described in the book, parlicularly QuarkXpress for the Macintosh, is necessary for competence in teaching students in journalism. The book is organized so well that difficult items clear for understanding. Such books are useful very much for teachers and students in journalism and mass communication.

Informative and enjoyable
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-30
I would recommend this book to people who have browsed the web and now want to get involved in writing their own web pages. I love the fact its Macintosh oriented! Also, this book takes you through a (brief) history of hypertext, html, etc. and explains (briefly) the controversies between purists and standardizers - I have a better understanding of where all this came from. Pfaffenberger is an excellent and entertaining writer - maybe a little tiny bit simplistic in some ways but not condescendingly patronizing and very thorough. After having looked through several books including "HTML for Dummies" (definitely condescending) and another thick book professing to give you everything you need to know on running a website (which was written by a compendium of people and assumed you understood all sorts of things) - I would say this is a great starting point. (I rated a 9 because I feel there is ALWAYS room for improvement...)
