A Very Good, Useful, Overlooked Book

Mitchell Hewson's excellent book, Horticulture as Therapy, is one that ought to have broader sales. I recently recieved a copy and have been reading it and am impressed at the huge amount of practical information in it. It is an attractive, large book, well-arranged, and easy to use. A book like this would be especially useful for teachers, staff in hospitals, nursing homes, for all people working with children, for folks working with physically or mentally challenged people, or with the elderly, for staff in prisons, and in many other areas.

The author has a real depth of understanding of how to use horticulture as a therapy and it shows. There are few means as effective as horticulture in relieving stress, in getting difficult students interesting in nature, in putting people back in touch with themselves and the world. There is a very useful section here too on resources. There are also many other good sections of "how to" things and the book would be very handy for anyone starting a horticulture program. There is also a considerable amount of practical cultural garden information here, and actually I think many ordinary gardeners would find the book useful and interesting.

I really can't recommend this book too highly. I am the author of Allergy-Free Gardening and I will certainly be recommending this book to many in the years to come. Thomas Leo Ogren

There are many books out there on meeting management but that by Donald Kirkpatrick has distinguished itself as a classic in meeting design, facilitation and ,management. The author methodically explains the essential elements of running productive meetings in a clear and logical way. The book is easy to read and use and is a standard guidebook that anyone can use.

The book covers all the meeting essentials including planning, creating an agenda, moderating conflict, stimulating discussion and participation, keeping a meeting focused, summarizing action items, problem solving, decision making, writing good minutes and following up on the meeting.

This is a very useful book whether you are the meeting leader, facilitator or participate in a meeting. It contains useful and often novel tips and techniques to ensure that a meeting is productive.

All-in-all, a clear, powerful and well written book that should avoid your organization from treating meetings as a nuisance and instead save vast amounts of time and productive man-hours from being wasted.

This book is chock full of self help techniques for those of us that have only one hand fully operational. In addition to help with the specific hobby the author has selected it is full of other methods of self help that you can use in hobbies other than the hobby the author has selected. I would reccommend it for everyone with handicaps.

Quiet hand tools and skills development
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-02
If you're like me and you like the sound of hand tools working wood, developing fine motor skills, saving money by making things yourself and the challenge and reward of making your own tools, then this book is for you. If you believe that happiness is another power tool then you'll be dissapointed. If you value ingenuity, creativity and simplicity in the workshop then you'll be impressed with the design of the tools in this book as well as the materials that are used.

This book has detailed plans for hand planes, clamps, and many other critical tools for the carpenter and cabinet maker.

There is also a little bit of history/context for this book. The authors explain that they developed these tools to stimulate the economy of rural Africa. Local artisans could not afford to buy expensive factory made tools, so by showing them how to make their own tools they helped these people earn a living.

I've been using this nice volume for a number of years now. The book is well illustrated and the text quite helpful. I use this work for both drawing and painting various subjects. The examples given here can quite well be used for other species than address in this volume. This is not a simple step by step book for those beginning although I do feel it would be a great help for anyone interested. Some degree of skill is needed in drawing and some in color shading to reap the full benefits from this book.

Recommended this book to two people recently so figure I should comment. If someone had purchased this 30 years ago and starting with $25,000 and about 3 positions and stuck with the program they would be worth a lot of money(I mean like maybe several million). All you need are these principals and a subscription to IBD(Investors Business Daily) digital edition(sent out 5 1/2 hours after regular market hours) to get earnings/revenue reports and your in the game!
