Using Science to Prove the Miraculous

In "Spiritual Healing, Scientific Validation of a Healing Revolution," Daniel Benor, M.D. uses the scientific method to demonstrate that spiritual healing works and thereby takes a giant step toward remedying the problem that Descartes created when he separated mind from matter. In his clearly written book, Dr. Benor uses the tools of logic and Western science to make a compelling case for the existence of the miraculous. By using science to validate spirit, Dr. Benor is signaling the end of the Cartesian split and indicating that we are rapidly moving toward a more integrated view of ourselves and our relation to the world. Although "Spiritual Healing" is a comprehensive reference book that will be consulted for many years, I found that it was very enjoyable reading. I was particularly drawn to the chapter in which numerous healers describe how they heal and their beliefs about spiritual healing.

In depth studies on healing for human problems

Review Date: 2001-10-15
In Spiritual Healing, Dr. Daniel Benor offers a ground breaking survey of 124 scientific studies documenting that spiritual healing actually works on physical illnesses and emotional injuries. Many of the controlled studies examine the effects of spiritual healing on humans, while others look at the recordable effects of spiritual healing on plants and animals. Some of the laboratory studies even demonstrate the effect spiritual healing has upon water and other materials. The reader is provided in depth studies on healing for human problems, a summary of healing methods, the views of some renowned spiritual healers, and an analysis of the risks and benefits of spiritual healing. Spiritual Healing is strongly recommended reading for students of alternative medicine in general, and spiritual healing efficacy in particular.

This is a remarkable book. It is an important contribution which
provides definitive scientific validation of spiritual healing. It
represents an incredible amount of comprehensive work in different
areas of healing. And it is an example of outstanding scholarship and
research. I believe the deterioration of our medical care system makes
it imperative that we learn to heal ourselves and others for many
problems for which we do not need conventional medical care. This book
& provides good evidence that many of us can be healers. In his Foreword
to this book, Larry Dossey, points out that "Modern medicine will change
dramatically,"and "perhaps the most important area in which radical
change will occur is in our understanding of the nature of consciousness
and its role in healing." This book is a major contribution to our
understanding of the role of consciousness in healing. As a
microbiologist. I particularly appreciate the information provided about
work with bacteria, yeast, fungi, algae, and protozoa. This information
is an introduction to a "new world" of microbiology. It is certainly
food for thought that should motivate more such research in
microbiology.

This book examines every type or form of spiritual healing, including Reiki, LeShan, Qigong, dowsing, craniosacral therapy, the Bowen technique, Barbara Brennan healing, Polarity Therapy, Shen healing, healing touch, etc. Spiritual healing is defined as a systematic purposeful intervention by one or more persons aiming to help another living being by means of focused intention, hand contact, or "passes" to improve their condition.

The author states that he was a skeptic, but that personal
experiences and research have convinced him that spiritual healing really exists and is a potent therapy. The book contains 124 scientific studies supporting various methods of spiritual healing.

Many well-known healers, such as Harry Edwards, Ethel Lombardi, and Dr. Ursula Thuberg are mentioned and their methods and approaches discussed. In 597 pages, the author seems to have touched all bases in providing proof that spiritual healing works. It is more than a book. It is an encyclopedia.

When completing my doctoral dissertation, I found this book to be absolutely invaluable. It would have taken me many, many months of effort to locate the information in Dan's book - and it may have been impossible to access some of the research. The book is also extremely valuable in convincing readers that energy medicine is alive and well, and is becoming a scientific field in its own right. A great compendium of energy medicine research. Thanks Dan - keep up the good work.

After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.

Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble

James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."

His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.

This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.

"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.

I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.

The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.

Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.

To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

A practical resource for better living

For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.

The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.

With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.

Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.

I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

analytically oriented help for conflict-prone couples

High Conflict Couple is a concise, easy to understand guide for couples seeking to deepen their relationship and ease their conflicts.

Its tone is a bit crisper, cooler, and more analytical than most marriage guides. This is actually its strength, speaking to the analytical half of your relationship in a straight-forward way they will appreciate and understand even if they shy away from most relationship-help books as being too touchie-feelie. The message is the same as many guides, that validation (lingo for healthy supportive loving communication) is the key to a happy, intimate relationship-- and it is the key. This book helps approach that need from the angle of couples or individuals who have already been conflict-prone.

The book has open-ended exercises that are useful if a bit vague, precise examples, and very good flow from chapter to chapter, start to finish. Even the layout is accessible with short measured segments that allow the reader to pause and reflect frequently.

Pair this with The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work: A Practical Guide from the Country's Foremost Relationship Expert for a complete set of paperback marriage counseling: that book contains many accessible examples, detailed exercises, and 2-person activities to try with your partner. I highly recommend the combination of the two books.

Regardless, if you're the emotional half of your relationship, get High Conflict Couple for your emotionally-challenged partner. If you're the analytical half, the guide will speak to you right away, and you'll wonder why nobody ever explained it to you in such a direct easy to understand way.

Highly recommended whether you are in a happy relationship, a struggling one, or struggling to understand why a relationship failed.

This book really helped me understand some of the dynamics of my marriage that I had previously been confused by. I couldn't figure out how two people who love each other so much could rip each other to shreds in times of conflict. It's written very clearly and the exercises are great for helping you become more aware and less reactive. I would recommend this book for anyone who is struggling in a relationship and seeks to make it better.

Author Fruzzetti does a wonderful job of presenting the DBT interpersonal and mindfulness skills training in a way that allows my patients to begin a process of change. Although there is resistance when first encountered, as the patient continues to read and put into practice the suggested techniques, i.e. "rule of three validations," the favorable outcomes result in their continued use. Recommended for all clinicians dealing with resentment and anger issues.

This book is an important new resource not only for people concerned about relationship conflict. Anyone struggling with anxiety, depression, or other "individual" emotional problems who is also in an intimate relationship could benefit. More and more, psychologists are discovering just how important relationships are to what we once thought were individual personal problems. This wonderful book is rich with real life examples and straightforward exercises every reader can do. This book is highly recommended for anyone wanting to improve their relationship with their partner!

A great resource for all couples!

This book is full of practical tips on how to make any couple's relationship better. It places a lot of emphasis on validation (what it is, how to validate and how we frequently inadvertantly invalidate each other without realizing it). Each chapter includes exercises to practice what was discussed. The exercises essentially help a couple to start to immediately put into practice what was discussed in the chapter; it's amazing how the techniques, though not complicated, really seem to work. In summary, the book is well organized, easy to read, and an extremely effective way for a couple motivated toward change to move forward in a positive way. Thank you!

This book is FANTASTIC!!! Go look in the pages and check out how they have their index. Most books' indexes you go to look up a word like *asthma* and you get page numbers that you go to and hope it's what you were looking for. In this book you look up asthma in the index and it shows you which herbs and the page numbers! That was worth the price of the book to me! Same with herb listings... you look up the herb and it tells you which ailment it will help and the page number to find it on.

Within the book you will find DETAILED explanations on which herbs to use, how much and how to apply them (i.e. gargling, teas, capsules, etc.)

This book will be my main herbal medicine book for years to come! Out of all my herbal books this one *by far* is the BEST book on herbal medicine that I have in my library! I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone seeking natural alternatives to health!!

I've studied herbs for years, and have collected many books on the subject, but of them all, Mowreys' book The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine holds a pre-eminent place. Well written, intelligently and solidly researched, this book stands head over shoulders above the plethora of herbal books that derive their information mostly from folklore and anecdotal reports. Mowrey's book seperates the "wheat from the chaff". Highly recommended.

If you're looking for practical accelerated test methods for the real world, then this book is for you. I work with Alex Porter at Intertek ETL Entela, and have edited many of his technical papers. He has extensive knowledge of a variety of test methods, and he writes technical material in a manner that is very user-friendly and easy to understand (even for someone in Marketing!). There is no pie-in-the-sky engineering theory here, just hands-on test methods.

Excellent Approach to a New Form of Product Testing
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-09
Alex Porter has given the reader an easy to follow explanation of accelerated stress testing (AST), when to use it, the possible choices available and when each choice should be applied. Rather than concentrating on the equations that describe statistical reliability, as most previous texts have done, Alex describes this new approach in straight-forward prose. The result is a story that can be followed by new-to-the-field product developers, as well as by older, more experienced engineers. The first three chapters would be especially valuable to Managers, as they define when data is actually information, the time value of information and when the application of accelerated test methods is most important. Several chapters detail the variety of available accelerated testing techniques, together with the pros and cons of each. The last few chapters introduce a new concept - the Hypothesis Matrix - which is derived from a detailed DFMEA and a knowledge of AST methods, arriving at a way to answer a primary question of new product development - "what will break this product and how?" The book is filled with interesting theory, examples and antidotes to lead the reader to subject knowledge and comprehension. It is an excellent counterpoint to the more traditional texts, and priced to be available to everyone.

N. Edward Walker, The Design Analysis Handbook. A Practical Guide to Design Validation. Newnes, 1998 A Review This is a very daring and matter-of-fact book. It deals with a very important issue: how to handle the uncertainty involved in the design of electronic circuits. This uncertainty has several sources: 1. The equations one uses in design are based on assumptions that simplify the real life situation; 2. The actual values of the electronic components differ from their nominal values; 3. The human error in handling the complex equations can seldom be avoided. The effects of these uncertainties often become visible in the late stages of product development, when correction measures are costly, if not ineffective, so that the final product does not meet the quality requirements. Ed. Walker's approach is consistent with the principles of concurrent engineering. He advocates the cooperation within a team of design and quality engineers, in order to get the product right the first time, by avoiding the bugs in the R&D and design phases. The first chapter examines the state-of-the-art of the design and Q&R engineering practices, pointing to the extending gulf between the two disciplines. The importance of robust design validation is emphasized and the disadvantages of the present tools and methods are mentioned. These will be examined in detail with some excitingly polemic overtones in chapter 5, under the heading "bad science". In the second chapter, a new kind of worst-case analysis is introduced, more efficient than the classical Monte Carlo simulation approach. The outcome of this analysis is a procedure for risk assessment and a methodology for design correction and optimization. Next, in the third chapter, several design validation topics are considered and computer-aided solutions are presented, notably the software tool Design Master that accompanies the book. I used this software in a teaching environment and I was impressed by its high quality. The author practices what he preaches, so that the software product he delivers has all the "abilities" involved by the "total" quality concept: usability, reliability, supportability, portability and so on. However, quality validation of software products is a topic not examined in-depth. The safety analysis presented in chapter 4 introduces in simple and straightforward manner methods like FMEA and FTA, which are extensively dealt with elsewhere, but within an excessively sophisticated framework. The last chapter offers useful and interesting tips for electronic circuit quality analysis. The "difficult" subjects, such as Power and Thermal analysis, Grounding and Layout and EMI / Noise control, usually avoided in textbooks, are duly examined in detail. The case studies concerning Rectifier Circuits, Power Supplies, Digital circuits are completely worked-out, so that everyone can use them as an available guide. The appendices provide templates for analysis reports, a framework for the application of the original methods proposed in the book and a whimsical overview of engineering projects. Th book is a no-nonsense, straightforward approach to difficult and sophisticated quality issues that can arise in an engineering environment. It provides useful guidelines, powerful tools and effective methods for total quality improvement and assurance.

An outstanding alternative to monte carlo simulation

Review Date: 2001-01-07
The first four or five chapters of this book explain in detail the statistical analysis technique WCA+. The text is easy to read and requires only a limited probability and statistics background to understand how to apply the technique. The remaining chapters give concrete examples from the electrical engineering field. As a mechanical engineer I found the first few chapters very helpful and I have applied the technique successfully many times. Statistical design engineering is a must today and the WCA+ method is an excellent alternative monte carlo simulation. If you are concerned with the response of your system at the extreme values of the inputs then, this book is a must because monte carlo simulation just doesn't suffice.

The Best Text on 3-D Geological Structures
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 31 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-16
This is probably the best available text on three-dimensional representation of geological structures. It is a handbook for use by professionals but would also serve as a supplemental text for structural geology or workstation courses.

The content is logically organized, well focused, clearly written and complete. The topics begin with the basics. These include classification, description and analysis of structures. More advanced topics follow. They range from dynamic interaction between structural and sedimentary events to fluid movements and to restoration. The worked examples are simple and clearly make their respective points. The exercises range from rudimentary to somewhat challenging for the first-time student of structural geology. Many topics would be new to anyone who has not kept current with advances in structural geology. These include, among others, new techniques in dip sequence analysis and calculating area-depth relations.

Modern technology in the form of workstations permits geoscientists to produce spectacular graphics depicting geological structures and their development. A common complaint of energy company managers is that the interpretive graphics look so good that they are believable simply because of the presentation. When financial decisions such as drilling are made based on those interpretations they often are found to be incorrect. Workstation interpreters could significantly improve the quality of their structural interpretations if they master the content of Dr. Groshong's book. Moreover, as visualization becomes an important trend to the future of interpretation technology, the basic science represented by this book takes on a more important and timely meaning.

The price of the book may seem to be excessive. This is especially evident when compared with texts prepared by non-profit organizations such as the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Those books are more attractive because they use color and are printed on better quality paper. This book has no color and is printed on ordinary quality paper. However, if the price of the book is compared with similar books published by for-profit book houses, the price is competitive. In the final analysis, the content of the text and quality of the writing more than justify its purchase.

I recommend this text to all interested in the study and practice of structural geology, especially interpreters using workstation or visualization technology.

This book provides a very clear treatment of model selection, the bootstrap and the computer-intensive philosophy. It places heavy emphasis on the bootstrap and cross validation. Other computer-intensive methods such as MCMC methods, multiple imputation and permutation methods are not treated. It represents development up to 1994 in a rapidly advancing area. There have been many additional theoretical and applied advances since then. It covers most of the topics of other competing books on bootstrap and resampling but is unique in its treatment of model selection and validation. It appears to require intermediate level knowledge of mathematics and freely uses matrix algebra. There are many good references and examples. The author uses FORTRAN to implement the methods and provides code. This may be a bit old fashioned. Current price of book is very high and these days there are many alternative texts to consider.

It appears to require intermediate level knowledge of mathematics and freely uses matrix algebra. There are many good references and examples. The author uses FORTRAN to implement the methods and provides code. This may be a bit old fashioned.

I'm in a class that uses this book as the text. I am very impressed with the step-by-step instruction. The text doesn't assume anything and yet, it doesn't insult my intelligence.

Very well-written, easy to follow, and confidence inspiring.

Well done, Mr. Mostafavi!

This is an introductory book on programming in Visual Basic 2005. However it does presume that you have programmed before on some kind of system. It doesn't matter which language, but the basic concept of writing commands, logic, and so on should be familiar to the reader. To be sure, he does give a bit of instruction into basic programming principles, but it is pretty basic.

Next he goes into a description of Visual Studio which is used to program in several Microsoft languages. Then on to writing programs. He leads you through the writing of a pretty basic program. While basic in nature this program covers a lot of the principles of programming. By the end of the chapter, you've put a small window on your screen.

Throughout the book he uses a series of extentions to the little program, and by the end of the book you should have a pretty good understanding of the language.
