This book is helpful no matter what your intentions are toward learning the language. Dr. Pickens was a professor of mine and his teaching methods are quite good.

Perfect for quick review of the essentials!

I was so pleased with Schaum's Easy Outline for Spanish that I purchased the Easy Outline for French to review for an upcoming exam. I was not disappointed. Once again I found the same reader-friendly overview of all the absolute essentials of grammar explained in a straightforward manner. Gone are the days of thumbing through pages and pages of detailed explanations of key grammatical structures. The book was actually pleasant to read and, as expected, easy to study from.

I especially recommend this book for beginners (keeps you focused and avoids frustration)and those who have not used their French in awhile and want to brush up their skills.

Norman Franks' SE 5/5A ACES OF WORLD WAR 1 joins others in Osprey's 'Aircraft of the Aces' series to chart the Royal Aircraft Factory and its famous unit No. 56 during World War 1. Collections strong in either military history of the era or aviation history will find it packed with over a hundred photos, nearly forty new color art works, and detailed biographies of all pilots.

SE 5/5a Aces & Units!

Review Date: 2007-09-13
The Royal Aircraft Factory SE 5a was one of Britain's two best fighters, the other being the Sopwith Camel. While the Camel reigned supreme at lower and medium altitudes, the SE 5a handled affairs at higher altitudes. Almost 100 British, Commonwealth and American pilots made ace in the SE 5/5a, many of their exploits being chronicled in this Osprey 'Aircraft of the Aces' volume by Norman Franks.

The SE 5a aces list reads like a 'Who's Who' of famous WWI pilots - Ball, McCudden, Mannock, Beauchamp Proctor, Rhys Davids, 'Taffy' Jones, George McElroy, Bill Lambert, 'Grid' Caldwell, etc. Relating the exploits of all those men would obviously require a book double or triple the length of this Osprey volume.

Within the book's 80-odd pages of text however Franks does a good job of touching upon each SE 5/5a squadron as they were formed and highlighting the backgrounds and successes of each's top-scoring pilots. Inclusion of several first-person accounts of dogfights is a definite plus.

Eleven pages of color profiles by Harry Dempsey and over 110 black & white photographs help illustrate the combat career of this sturdy warhorse and its brave pilots.

Nicely done, an excellent introduction.

Fabulous book, containing probably some of the best shop wisdom from excellent sources. Not to be missed are Mario Rodriguiez's notes on rasping, notes on old handplanes, and J.Crate Larkin's bowsaw design, which is an absolute masterstroke of design. A book that is not to be missed for all serious woodworkers!

The latest in the "New Best of Fine Woodworking" series, which collects the best articles from recent issues of "Fine Woodworking" magazine, Selecting And Using Hand Tools teaches the reader about buying the best tools, essential techniques such as four-squaring and using a marking knife in accurate joinery, applying edged tools or handsaws, getting the most out of tools for shaping and modifying, and much more. Diagrams and full-color photographs on every page walk the reader through procedures step-by-step, and the text explains hands-on tasks in easy-to-follow terms. An excellent resource for hands-on woodworkers of all skill and experience levels, from novice to advanced.

This is an excellent source for the collector of antique sewing implements. Full color illustrations of all priced objects make it easy to identify and place a value on pincushions, needlecases, thimbles and more. Not much text but price guides are generally short on text. If a price guide is what you want, I recommend this one.

If you need to cut, sand, route, shape, or clamp, this is a great reference book. I have read many shop tip books, and there are ideas here I've never seen anywhere else. And the illustrations are superb.

I've already made several jigs and used this book as the reference. There is enough detail to guide a user to completion, and more than enough jigs to cover all the situations you might encounter where a jig is required.

Great book... strongly recommend it !

Chairperson - Industrial, Manufacturing & Plasitcs/Composite

This book is an outstanding contribution to the Six Sigma effort, which allows the small shops to discover how all the elements of past and present improvement
processes fit together. Beginning with the history of the Industrial Revolution through the use of the six sigma practical tools, it explains the needs and how the tools dovetail nicely together.

Within this book's covers lay the applied use of six-sigma process improvement techniques, which reduce costs and give the practitioner, better understanding of processes and flow. By following the step-by-step process of define, measure, analyze, improve and control, hands-on problem solving is easily taught to everyone within an organization. The four appendixes plus the glossary completes a great reference book for any small and medium shop.

Being a past plant manager in small shops I see the high value of this book. The interactive CD makes the user a quick master in six sigma techniques. My plans are to use this as a text for my Six Sigma course at Sinclair Community College.

Thank you for this review opportunity.

Six Sigma for the Small Shop is a winner

Gary Conner has the knack of making both complicated concepts and potentially dull reading so simple that this book is required reading for anyone seriously contemplating or implementing any of the continuous improvement tools available to us. His exposition of DMAIC (design, measure, analyze, improve and control) into specific tools with copious charts is worth the price of the book alone. Not only is there an index but a glossary and a list of suggested reading.
Of particular value is the presentation of tables about each of the many initiatives that show that it's relationship to Six Sigma, as well as who needs or uses it, cost estimates, strengths, limitations, process complexity, implementation time, additional resources and internet search key words and URLs.
Aside:
I have two quibbles:
1. The title may scare away larger shop folk who can gain as much value from this book as the small shop people
2. I would have liked to see more linkage to the engineering design function. Manufacturing and industrial engineering are important, but most of product cost and defect generation happens up front in the design.
Having voiced my quibbles, this book sits on my desk along with Gary's "lean manufacturing for the small shop" and I can now recommend a second book by this down to earth lean author.

A FIELDBOOK OF OUTSTANDING QUALITY-HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.

Central to this work is the Skilled Facilitator approach (TSF), a systematic, values-based approach to group facilitation; at its core is the idea that the way we act and the consequences we create begin with the way we think. Chapter one delineates the 10 key features of TSF approach. It is used to help groups and entire organizations address issues and make significant change, as well as in coaching, training, and conducting HRD/OD initiatives of all types.

This ambitious resource is bursting with 62 contributions clustered into seven parts:
1) Understanding the Skilled Facilitator Approach-main focus: summarizes the approach and describes its major principles and features (8 chapters)
2) Starting Out-main focus: using TSF in a variety of basic ways (12 chapters)
3) Deepening Your Practice-main focus: refining intervention and diagnosis skills, and increasing personal awareness (7 chapters)
4) Facing Challenges-main focus: dealing with the most difficult situations (5 chapters)
5) Seeking Your Path-main focus: integrating the TSF approach in practice and life (5 chapters)
6) Leading and Changing Organizations-main focus: creating major change in leadership and organizational functioning (15 chapters)
and
7) Integrating the Skilled Facilitator Approach in Your Worklife (and Non-Worklife)-main focus: shows how to integrate TSF with other approaches and roles (coach, trainer, consultant, leader, parent) (10 chapters)

The book is further enriched with: definitions; key points; examples; tools and techniques and samples of the outcomes they produce; reflections; model conversations; and resources.

As a consultant in organizational analysis, design and change, as well as a reviewer, I was particularly drawn to Chapter 51, "Do Surveys Provide Valid Information for Organizational Change?" by Peg Carlson. She concludes what we have found to be true of surveys-they are useful for spotlighting likely issues but they do not deliver the depth of analysis and meaning required in organizational consulting, nor the motivation for learning and deep change. This chapter is emblematic of the books' quality of content. In a nutshell, this book is outstanding! I highly recommend it.

I've read this book almost cover to cover and I've gained a lot of insight in using Skilled Facilitator approaches as a teacher and a minister. Mostly, it's given me insight into how to develop myself as a creative listener, and how to control my inner thought processes, and turn that back around into positive leadership for the good of the group. I find it particularly helpful to keep the RULES foremost in my mind as I interact with students and parishioners. And it's true that the more I model these rules, the more my students and the others around me absorb them and begin to use them in their own interactions.
