It's tough to tell this from Amazon, but this book is a thousand pages, which makes it quite a hefty tome. But that doesn't make it a doorstop. There are screenshots, but they are, by in large, useful and relevant, and the book doesn't use them to tell a click by click story of the interface.

The book is organized into four parts that start at the user interface and continue to peel away levels of the system until, in chapter four, the author covers the command line unix shell at a surprising level of detail. A level of detail which rivals O'Reilly's other command line exclusive books. In fact, this book gives a fine introduction to scripting bash and tcsh. It does as good a job there as it does covering printing, or the vagaries of the new Finder in the chapters that precede it.

This is a quality piece of in-depth work about the unmodified Panther operating system. It's well worth the price for those who are more interested in understanding than hacking (though I admit a love for the new Mac OS X Panther Hacks book as well.)

The Definitive Guide to Panther

The publisher, O'Reilly Media, seems dedicated to covering Apple's OSX operating system, OSX, from every conceivable vantage point. Its "Missing Manual" series on Panther is a user's reference on how to use the operating system and its applications for productivity and fun. Its "Hacks" series provides dozens of tips, guides, and project ideas. In the "Nutshell" series iteration, "MacOSX Panther in a Nutshell" designs to provide in-depth, comprehensive information about the inner workings of the OS. It is for power users and developers who want to master the OS and have the fullest description and explanation of OSX.

This book starts out detailing the multi-layered architecture of OSX and illuminates its power and elegance. In great depth and detail, it explains the Unix components, Aqua elements, OS9 and Classic, the Finder, and the multitude of Unix services, daemons, and applications.

This is terse, descriptive prose. The authors focus a sharp telephoto lens on the skeleton, sinews, and pores of OSX, starting with basic elements and probing deep into the details of the file system, networking components, directory services, printing configurations and more. This in-depth description and large handfuls of guides and tips totals over 1,000 pages.

A separate part of the book is devoted to Applescript, X-code tools, and Java. The X-code tools are for developers. Part IV is all about Unix, including three chapters on "shells" alone, plus sections on text editors, the X-Window system, and a full 262 pages of Unix command references, touted as the most complete such source in print publication.

No mere user manual would have ten pages devoted solely to understanding and managing preference files, or five pages on using the Colorsync feature with Quartz filter scripts.

Surprisingly, only ten pages are dedicated to security issues. Although the Mac is known to be extremely secure, recent news shows even the Mac is vulnerable to sophisticated exploits.

For those with a need to know, this is the definitive source for deep knowledge of OSX.

Since I converted I have found OS X UNIX is amazingly friendly and accessible. Some people who had never used it before type commands and work with the operating system directly as a "cool guys" in movies! This book is very helpful and well written and it is serves as a very nice reference. I paired this book with Linux and UNIX for a beginner training suite, 4DVDs + 2CDs includes 4 Unix Academy Certifications ed.2008 This book and a video they contribute one another greatly. You improve the reading and by reading you improve what you have seen.
The book is very particular about the subjects that related to OS X and because there are some differences between OS X and other UNIXes it is nice to have a book that deals with it.

Do any of you remember the O'Reilly books from the late 80s on X Windows? Those became the definitive guides to X11, and probably were crucial in putting O'Reilly on the map as a prominent technical publisher.

Well, this book on Mac OS X Panther captures some of that early O'Reilly spirit. In its comprehensiveness and heft. But also in its terseness. Turn to a random chapter and start reading. The authors try to get to the point, without wasting time. They write at a technical level that assumes you don't know the specifics of that chapter, but that you are no novice to computing.

It should be noted that the second half of the book is essentially a standard unix reference. As you may be aware, OS X is now a unix variant. Which is neat. But also accounts for much of the book's size. Unix has built up a massive set of utilities in 20 years, and the length of the unix sections here reflects this.

Don't let this put you off either the book or OS X. On the contrary! The building of the Mac operating system on top of unix gives you more power and stability (against crashes) on the Mac.

I bought this book exactly for what the title mean: make my own woodworking tools. Exactly, molding hand plane.

I liked this book because:
-It is is a global and central source of reliable information in his field;
-It offers many options to "do things" to the tools makers who don't (for the moment) want to get deeply involved in blacksmithing;

I disliked this book beacause:
-It does not explain the scientific bases of the field when (I think) is could/should be requires;
-It focus too much (I think) on the autor's life. I enjoy some familiarity with the autor, but at the end, too much paragraph are about autor's anecdotes;

To conclude, I would rebuy this book without hesitation.

*** The "see inside" option played a definitive role in my purchase. I never buy a book I can't "see inside for 4 or 5 pages ***

Mike Burton should be complimented for sharing his multitude of skills with the reading and crafting public. This book is the distillation of many years of practical and academic study. To be able to take advantage of this wisdom for the paltry sum that this book cost is remarkable. Mike has the ability to take us through all the stages in the manufacture of a great variety of woodworking items. He does it in a simple, easy to follow manner and with a beautiful dry wit. If you buy this book you will be in the position to save a great deal on the purchase of essential tools by making many of your own to your considerable satisfaction. I have had the book for only two weeks and so have concentrated on my own particular interest. I now have a splendid array of woodcarving tools. They cost me very little in materials and the saving is many hundreds of dollars.The price of this book would only buy half a woodcarving tool! Mike has a fine eye for a bargain himself and it is a pleasure to be inducted into his economic ways. In the weeks and months ahead I feel that my savings, skills and satisfaction at making my own tools will increase many times. Mike you should have been a New Zealander! You would fit in very well.

I do research in machining at the University of New Hampshire. This book is the essential resource that all of my graduate students refer to on a regular basis. I recommend it for anyone doing research in the machining field. I would also recommend Tlusty's book, "Manufacturing Processes and Equipment" as a second essential resource.

Due to my job I am forced to read a lot of technical literature. I never got as much technical up-to-date information explained in such an intelligible way. Compared to other books dealing with manufacturing processes (which are mostly written by scientists in a very, very scientific way), in this book you've got the impression that the author virtually tells you the modern fundamentals of manufacturing. This makes this book easily understandable. Nowadays, High Speed Machining is well established in manufacturing. The future will bring High Performance Machining which means that the metal removal rates are significantly higher at high cutting speeds. As far as High Performance Cutting is concerned, this book covers also the theories of the dynamic behaviour of the cutting process. Therefore, chatter is of great importance. The author explains the two present "Chatter Theories" in detail and enables the reader to perform his own calculations on process stability. I strongly recommend this book to all engineers and students of mechanical engineering who want to know the latest scientific results explained in a comprehensible way. This book is a must in the bookcase.

I had the great fortune of taking a course with Dr. Altintas at the University of British Columbia and I have to say that he is very thorough in his teaching methodology.

This was the textbook for the course and we covered most of it... I have to say that the book is very thorough and really teaches you in a practical way. The contents are very up-to-date and full with his own research results (which are cutting-edge). Also, the book's price has been kept very reasonable so that it is "student friendly".

I would have to say that this book was able to accomplish being both very detailed, and easy to understand. Not something that many authors can achieve. The simplicity in which the chapters are broken down into makes it easy for one to be able to quickly access whatever they need. Not to mention I used this for just one class, and in a semester we only got through about 12 or so chapters, of the 43. Great reference for the future and very highly recommended!

I used this book (7th Edition) as the standard text for my Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering - I took all the electives in Manufacturing Engineering and so can say I covered a very broad range of topics in some depth.

This book is - to say the least - comprehensive. Not only did I find it an easy but thorough reference while taking my courses, I still frequently refer to it over 10 years later. I can honestly say that it is rare that I have to go outside of this book to look up details on basic manufacturing and machining processes.

A real benefit to the way the book has been written is the extensive use of photographs and diagrams to illustrate just about every point (often several to a page). When you are trying to understand real world problems like manufacturing this is essential.

In fact, I would go so far to say as if you are just someone with an inquisitive mind that likes to tinker with machine tools then you'll find this book useful. There have been plenty of times when I stumbled upon something while researching another topic and had a "so that's how they do it" moment.

You won't find extensive theory in the book - if you need to do theoretical calculations on strength of materials etc then you will want to look elsewhere. If you are interested in the practical details of manufacturing processes then this is the one for you. Perhaps thats the reason why this volume gets all the use and my theory books stay in the basement!

By the way, it's a real tome - over 1100 pages in the 7th edition - I'm sure there have been revisions in the 8th edition but haven't seen it yet. Even though it's expensive this book has paid itself off many times over for me.

And suddenly on Chapter 11, it puts it all together and effortless you can price any option with any payoff you can imagine, I got impress withmyself. This is a great little book. I would put it in my category of 'original' books on quant finance, which includes books written by Paul Wilmott, Mark Joshi, Rick Osband and Neftci.

The reason being that the author uses a more informal style than most quant books and is very hands-on. If you're interested in understanding quant models and eventually applying them in the real world, then this is the kind of book you want. If you're looking for mathematical beauty and formalism, then look elsewhere.

The editors could have done a better job with some of the flow and formatting - maybe next edition (it is sometimes hard to link the text to the figures and tables).

Great book.

Very good coverage, practical orientation

Consider first, this book's subtitle, "Tools for Incomplete Markets." A "complete market" (the kind assumed by the Black-Scholes-Merton model) is one in which any derivative product can be dynamically replicated by means of cash and the underlying asset. An incomplete market, then, is one is which the world of derivatives and their underlyings do not match each other in the point-by-point replicable manner implied by that definition of completeness. This failure to match makes for a necessary imperfection in hedging. That, of course, is the real world, where traders practice, as Scholes and Merton famously discovered in Greenwich, CT not long ago!

A variety of illustrations of this practical emphasis might be adduced. In the preface, for example, Dr. Cerný tells us frankly that in his experience "is it hard to understand the Itô calculus, but it is possible to get used to it and to apply it quickly and consistently...." [italics in original.]

An excellent introduction to financial mathematics

I had the great pleasure of attending Dr. Cerny's lectures in mathematical techniques in finance. The lectures were structured around this book and were accordingly brilliant. The book starts off gently, to great relief for those who need to cover more basic mathematics in discrete time, before moving on to continous time and later introducing concepts such as Matingales and Browninan Motion. The book shows you how to derive such as the Black Scholes Formula, and introduces the Ito formula which is extensively used in pricing options.

Importantly, the book is clearly written and 'recycles' the exercises as it progresses from simple to more complex topics. I found this to be of great use since you already have an understanding of what the exercise is all about, intuitively and 'mechanically', and you can compare the methods and more readily understand what is going on in the more complex examples.

This book does not require a heave maths background. As always, the more the better, however, you can easily make great use of this book only with an understanding of simple calculus like derivatives and integrals. A basic understanding of linear algebra will also prove beneficial.

If you are looking for a book that will explain important concepts in finance, then this book is exactly what you are looking for.

This is a truly delightful series that the whole family can enjoy. Good stories, great characters and the indomitable Miss Nelson all add up to great fun and great reading for kids.

The Best Film Book for Teachers...EVER!!

As a teacher, I get BOMBARDED with teaching guides, materials, books, etc. You name it, I've got one.

That said, this is simply the single best resource I have ever encountered for using film in the classroom.
Golden's point is simple and clear: It's not enough to just say "Movie Day!" and pop a tape into the VCR. We must teach our students to read film in the same way that we teach them to analyze and encounter any other kind of text.

Golden's book contains wonderful exercises, ideas, very specific clips from dozens of films, and teaching materials (age appropriate films, sample questions and assessments) for several grade levels.

As a professional collegue of the author, I have been fortunate indeed to have been using his materials for over 5 years now. My students consistently rave about the unit in their year-end reflections. They say things like, "I never knew there was so much going on in the film before." and "You've changed the way that I look at films forever!"

On behalf of all English/LA teachers: Thanks, John!!

A good tool for teaching critical viewing and film-as-text

Golden's book is an excellent starter manual for teachers who want to incorporate media literacy into their curriculum. The great thing is he goes beyond teaching film technique, using film as an aid to teaching literary technique. I had been teaching critical viewing and film-as-text to my high-school freshmen for several years already; Golden's book helped me put together a more cohesive unit and then more seamlessly expand film study into text study. I particularly found his storyboarding activity useful. Studies show that many struggling readers cannot visualize as they read and that is why reading is "boring" to them; this activity is good for encouraging visualization of text. They also have to justify why they set up the shot the way they did, which is a higher-order thinking skill because it demonstrates genuine understanding of the written work they are storyboarding. Published by the National Council of Teachers of English/Language Arts, the book contains ideas useful for elementary through high school aged students. I gave the book five stars even though I had some better (in my opinion) and more varied choices for film clips to show in class to demonstrate certain techniques. The book's value is its usefulness to teaching film as text, not as work of film criticism.

Many people perceive television as the enemy of reading and writing. In his book, John Golden defies what other teachers deem the traditional methods of teaching by bringing films into the classroom. Elizabeth and Apocalypse Now are just some examples of how to inspire students to look for imagery and symbolism in film and then to apply it to literature.

This book is very instructive and extremely interesting. It is definitely the best I've read. Teachers of all grade levels should read this book to, perhaps, interest their students in the literary arts. It's great for the move into the age of technology.

This book is great. If you are just starting out writing appraisals or just want something fresh and new, this is a great book to use. With this book it was a time saver for me because it addresses pretty much every area that I needed for my associate reviews. Best of all, it's user friendly. I highly recommend this book.

This is a great tool for managers who are responsible for writing performance reviews for their staff. It provides an actionable outline for the performance review process (if your company doesn't already have one). Most importantly, it provides pre-written paragraphs and text to help you articulate how employees exceeded or didn't meet expectations. (Great for those who don't have much experience writing reviews or those who just need some fresh ways to express their thoughts.)
