If you ever wondered what it was thet you were doing wrong when you couldn't find a way to get your message across, then you will enjoy the short journey to self awareness. It's a funny thing to discover that all it takes to bridge the gap between people is being willing to take the first step yourself. Lead by example. Be prepared to answer the very questions you ask of others. This book leads you through the obvious, providing succint examples of "what if" etc. If you don't find a better way to communicate by reading this book, be prepared to admit you have a long way to go.

Just the Primer I needed
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-27
As a founder and executive of a fast growing startup, I found d'Aprix's "Communicating for Change" book exactly the introduction I needed to the internal (corporate) communications profession. He effectively defines "strategic communications" (he coined the term) and then articulates why and how strategic communications are necessary in any organization.

The book's strongest contribution is a simple model for approaching internal communication (as articulated in the subtitle): focus on the marketplace. His arguments are based on 2 decades of data and first hand experiences. His brilliance is being able to effectively describe communication principles to those outside the communications profession.

In a few short sections D'Aprix heads off target into territory where his expertise is not so valuable (in management and leadership concepts). But if you're looking for a primer on how to use internal communications to make your organization more effective, this is the book for you. D'Aprix even gives you an added bonus: the book is very short.

Warner's book is one of the best I've read on communication in information environments. Written for British university students studying Systems Analysis and Consulting, it is a valuable resource on written and oral communication, and covers team work, interviewing and negotiation techniques, creating and maintaining documentation, and training issues. Especially commendable is Warner's sensitivity to cultural differences in communication and business practice. All in all, an excellent resource.

Ask the experts: A-to-Z for Today's Networks
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-05
I found this book to be an excellent source for virtually any type of communications network question. It gave end-to-end information on every stage of network design, planning, latest technologies and protocols, management, bandwidth, security and VPNs, network migration, IBM data centers, WANs and LANS, remote access, wireless, etc.

I especially liked the way each article seems to be written by an expert in that field, who not only deals with the issues facing every IT manager and network administrator every day, but also in the newest technologies and trends. This book is very helpful in discussing the true concerns of today's corporate infrastructure, and offering real-world solutions. These can be applied to any kind of network the reader may have, or be planning.

I found the Handbook to be an encyclopedia for enterprise networks. It's how-to, FAQ style and opinion/editorial articles get down to the nitty-gritty. Two thumbs up!

This book was a find. It is in emaculate condition and has been an excellent addition to my collection of vintage books. The price was a bargain and the ship time appropriate.

Good All-Around Primer for Business Etiquette
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-29
This book covers all of the basics for how to conduct oneself in the business world. Office politics, dining, and social functions are all addressed. The wardrobe section is very helpful, as well. It offers sound clothing advice for both men and women. The women's section is noteworthy in that it gives women the freedom to actually dress like a woman in the office. Too many books of this sort pigeonhole women into the traditional black hole of a dark suit, round earrings, and sensible pumps. The dining section gives advice on being proper, but not stuffy, at the table. There is also a useful glossary on hard-to-eat foods. This book offers useful and practical tips for the seasoned executive and the young up-and-comer, alike. I recommend it to anyone in the business world.
