As a college instructor, I have read many books similar to these--present a skill, provide an activity, etc., but then no application is given. However, this text is excellent because not only are the discussions on communication/leadership skills quite interesting & thorough, but the exercises provided are practical & ones that I will actually use when I teach. (Many similar texts have the silliest activities). But the very best part is the REFERENCES--sources cited are mostly up-to-date & always include some of the classic works in communication. This book is very impressive--practical, credible, and USEFUL!!!!

The best book for teaching leadership to youngsters....

I have looked long for books that can be used to teach leadership to young people (middle school and up). Susan Fritz is an ass't prof in the department of ag leadership at Univ. Nebraska-Lincoln, and she has pulled together 17 excellent chapters about leadership, in exercises that can be used with young people. Her writing is clear, the chapters and exercises well organized, and you can use these with your classes.

This is by far the best I have seen so far. I especially liked Ch 7, Creating the Vision and Establishing Goals, and Ch 14, Responding With Empathy.

I am involved in doing around 100 Keynote Presentations a year! I am certified through Microsoft for PowerPoint. I find Keynote far superior to PowerPoint. Tom has done a magnificant job writing this book! If you are looking for a simple no nonesense book to learn Keynote look no further. I have used a lot of computer learning books this is the best! I recommend this one to everyone. The chapter creating custom themes is worth the price of the book.

I have been using these visual quickstart books for all my software, I have found them to be a great place to start when learning basics and to get you going. Later on you may want to delve into more geek type stuff, but if you want to get going and accomplish something right away with your new software or programs, I recommend these books.

Keynote is not overly complicated, but I wanted to see what I could really do on some projects I had in mind, and this book was a big help and saved me time.

Great but not if you upgraded from book 1 to book 2

The original book, which dealt with Keynote 1, was very helpful. I hoped this one would add or expand, since the author had a chance to improve on the original just as Apple had when they went up a version. No luck. I wasted my money. However, if you're buying this one and don't have a previous edition it should be great. Don't forget that Apple's Keynote version 3 is now out so you can expect another book soon, maybe.

I'm giving this a 5 since it's a great book but for me, buying the second edition of the same book, the second one is nothing new.

Roy Underhill's "Krushchev's Shoe" is simply an excellent guide to becoming an engaging speaker, presenter, even writer. Through delightful personal anecdotes and voyages ranging from the nature of the creative process to voice spectograms illustrating the difference between a good speaker and a weak one, Underhill provides the reader with a brilliantly written, wise, and funny book about the nature of public presentation. The book is amply illustrated with woodcuts and sketches driving his points home. As a teacher I cannot stress how useful this book is. I have recommended it to a program designed to teach teachers how to teach (better). Many books of this nature are deadly to read--this one is great. His chapter called "The Morning After" alone is worth the price of the book.

The Woodwright Speaks - And Audiences Listen
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-13
Think of selling this show to network, even PBS, executives. One walks into the office and says, "I have a great idea for a TV how-to show where a guy goes out and cuts down a tree, then he teaches you to use traditional hand tools and make it into a replica of the chair in which Jefferson sat while he wrote the Declaration of Independence. Once you watch it, you can go out and do it yourself! Whaddya think?" One would have to expect as ungraceful an exit from the producer's office as the construction worker who found the singing frog in the classic Warner Bros. cartoon.

Well, that is exactly the show, The Woodwright's Shop, that Roy Underhill has been able to keep on television for more than 20 years. Of course, if most hobbyist woodworkers are going to watch a "how-to" show and make something presented by the host, they are more likely to follow Norm Abrams' measured drawings and run to Home Depot for the lastest tool to really make the sawdust fly. But, audiences watch Underhill's show not only for the extreme mastery he shows of his craft, but also his mastery of captivating an audience with a great storytelling approach.

This is the essence of Krushchev's Shoe. Roy Underhill takes what he has learned in demonstrating a craft totally foreign to modern audiences, both on his television show and at Colonial Williamsburg, and shares it with his readers so that we may become better communicators.

This book is helpful to anyone who dreads standing before a crowd and opening one's mouth. It is particularly helpful though to those of us who train others to be effective communicators. Museum professionals, theme park managers, teachers, etc, may all find some use in the suggestions Underhill makes in Krushchev's Shoe.

Best Guide to Legal Presentations
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-21
The authors have outdone themselves with this edition. It is comprehensive and accessible, whether you are a novice or an expert. The CD provides excellent step by step instruction for the lawyer who wants to learn techniques to create the most effective presentations. But the book is more than just technical tips. The discussion of legal concerns, as well as basic rhetorical theory, makes this book an essential resource for lawyers and legal assistants who want to reach jurors (and judges) who are much more media savvy today. Most decision makers are not primarily aural learners, and in the days of CSI, the ability to highlight the most compelling evidence is not just a luxury.
What makes the book most valuable is the depth of understanding of persuasive techniques, illustrated with many true-to-life examples. Lawyers who are highly skilled in aural persuasion can hone their messages better, by learning how to harness technology to bring the facts to life through visual illustration. The good lawyer can learn how to present a seamless web of information that will reinforce the trial theme and the trial strategy for the juror or judge who can see and hear the evidence in the courtroom.
This is not just about trial techniques. The authors also address other ways in which presentations can be made more effectively (in motion hearings, settlement negotiations, administrative hearings and seminars).
The focus of the book is on presentation technique regardless of the format of the presentation. It includes the most popular presentation software (Powerpoint) as well as other software designed specifically for lawyers (Sanction II, TrialDirector).
This should be required reading for every litigator who wants to be more persuasive.

If you've been deterred by the notion of creating a computer presentation for use in court, here's your book. The writing is in plain English and even engaging. The information starts with baby steps but will take you as far as you care to venture. The insights into how juries view, absorb and evaluate evidence is worth the price of the book, even if you never end up creating a computer presentation. The authors also cover using computer presentations with clients, colleagues and while teaching seminars. Absolutely terrific.

This book is fast to read, it flows smoothly, and it makes a mental impact without bombarding the brain with too many words. The lessons in this book apply professionally and personally.

Also, I am currently deployed to Iraq with the author of this book (CMSgt Hughes). This man puts his words in action everyday out here. I admire his leadership style, which makes the book even greater.

This book reminds you of three basic tenants of great leadership. I am in senior management in the military and forgot that there are simple attributes a leader should remember and practice when dealing with bosses, co-workers, and subordinates. The author gets to the point using simple examples, and real life stories to drive home his points. I highly recommend this book not only to military folks, but to civilian organizations too. This book is easy reading and it communicates to all levels of management.

Benny Hughes, a chief master sergeant in the United States Air Force, gives us a straight-forward, enjoyable, and memorable book on what it takes to lead in any environment. His common sense approach not only gives us a method to develop or sharpen our leadership style, he does so in a fashion that is fun and engaging. I found his book caused me to reflect on how I may be perceived by all those I worked with, and was able to self-correct weaknesses in my Communication, Attitude, and Performance. This power-packed read is a great starting point for emerging leaders, and a gem for the seasoned professional to reflect on their style.

Useful, practical textbook for speech preparation

This book was recommended by an excellent executive coach who trains many top executives' speeches and presentations.
It contains many practical ideas such as;
-Step-by-step guide for preparation,
-"Winning with Words" (effective use of rhetorical techniques,
-how to use visual aids,
-how to avoid using them as clutch,
-how spoken words are different from reading,
-tons of good quotes as examples, etc.

It was very useful for me as I prepare my 60-minute speech, and I highly recommend this for people who are challenging themselves as a public speaker.

"Without doubt this is the best ever "how to" book on speeches and presentations, no matter what the topic - business, social, political, or technical.

As a CEO I have sat through so many turn-off presentations by people I know to be literate and interesting. This book demonstrates how unnecessary this is and that one does not have to be a "born speaker" to make lively, interesting, really effective presentations.

It is completely practical in identifying the tried and tested techniques which have served the great communicators down the ages. It is also first class on how to use (but not over use) modern computer aids to great effect.

No wonder speechwriters to Presidents Reagan and Clinton say the author Professor Max Atkinson is the speechwriters Guru."

Great book for writing a speech

Review Date: 2007-06-14
As an executive speech writer and coach, I've read many fine books on public speaking. This book is one of the best I've seen about the art of crafting a compelling speech.

I especially enjoyed the three chapters of the first section. They examine how giving a speech is like and unlike holding a conversation. And they suggest ways for making a speech more conversational. You've probably heard much of the advice before - make the audience part of your speech, establish eye contact, pause, avoid being overly formal or using words that are rarely heard in everyday conversation, etc. - but now you'll understand why.

I liked the chapter titled "The Persuasive Power of Words." It examines four rhetorical techniques that make audiences pay attention to and remember what you say:
1. CONTRASTS, which include contradictions ("not this but that"), comparisons ("more this than that"), opposites ("black or white"), and phrase reversals
2. PUZZLES (assertions that briefly confuse the audience, priming them for your solution) and QUESTIONS
3. LISTS OF THREE
4. A COMBINATION OF THE OTHER THREE TECHNIQUES

And I found a lot to think about in the chapter, "Painting Words with Pictures." It begins, "A picture may sometimes tell a thousand words, but words can just as easily be used to create a thousand images." It then examines the different ways of creating images in the minds of your audience: similes, metaphors, analogies, anecdotes, and quotations.

I found the other chapters on visual aids (including PowerPoint) and body language less insightful, although I agree with almost everything Atkinson writes in them. (Beware: if you're wedded to PowerPoint or if you believe that how you speak is more important than what you say, you're going to be challenged - rightly, I think - by what he writes.)

Each chapter is filled with examples and stories (mostly from politics) and ends with a one- or two-page summary. Each section concludes with exercises to help you apply what you've read.

The book's subtitle, "All You Need to Know about Making Speeches," is a bit misleading. The book is more about writing a speech than delivering one. And while it gives great advice about using words, phrases, and images to strengthen a speech's impact, it goes into considerably less detail about constructing a speech.

Atkinson has experience in academia and as a consultant for politicians and corporations. His book is both intellectually stimulating and practical.

You may not like this book if you're looking for a beginner's guide to public speaking. But if you want to make your speeches more engaging and memorable, you'll profit from this book.

It's one of the few books I go back to again and again as I'm writing speeches for my clients. I highly recommend it.

As much an art book as a literary survey, Look Of Love considers the covers and stories of the romance market which have captivated millions from 1940-70. From changing themes of romance novels - such as women who come to struggle between careers and love - to changing images of women and passion, this is a colorful and revealing survey.

Lust, passion, betrayal and that's just the cover!

Individually these covers are very dull as graphic designs but put 150 in a book and they become interesting. As the author says in the intro, the paperback romance has come a long way. For years the covers of this literary genre had a dominant painting, predictably of the heroine, mediocre typography for the title, blurb and author's name. By the seventies things had changed for the better and covers took on the full force of the Marketing Division, image space was reduced to make way for expressive typography (some of it very good too) die-cut holes, foil stamping, embossing, fluorescent inks, thermography and varied paper stock.

Unfortunately there is only one example of the contemporary look ('Hearts Aflame' by Johanna Lindsey) in the 150 shown. Mostly they are American covers from the forties to the mid-sixties, some from Canada and a few from Mills and Boon the main British romance publisher. Each of the nine chapters has a page of intro text printed on slightly yellowing paper, leading into the covers, a nice touch on these intro pages is the turned over top right-hand corner creating a bookmark, as one does with inexpensive books. Some of the covers also have the back shown and you can read the clichéd copy written to convince the casual book browser that they really do want to know what happened next.

This is worthwhile addition to my popular culture book collection and if you want more have a look at the six hundred covers in Richard Lupff's `The Great American Paperback', a book of coffee-table proportions covering all genres but which I found rather disappointing because of its sloppy production.

I don't think I'm giving too much away if I quote the last page of `The Look of Love'...
"That's what it's like, darling," said Mrs. Stokes uneasily, "Being a doctor's wife, I mean."
"I know," said Linette softly, her eyes starry. "Isn't it wonderful?"
