The Finite Element Method for Elliptic Problems (Studies in Mathematics and Its Applications)

Ciarlet's text is not the only book to analyze in depth the mathematical theory of finite element methods, but it is still one of the best. The mathematics in the book is mostly self-contained beyond some facts of functional analysis, but readers without an appropriate level of mathematical maturity will find it difficult. The main focus of the book is on elliptic problems, and particularly linear problems. Those readers who want to deal with eigenvalue problems, constrained problems in which ellipticity fails, problems in dynamics, or problems with strong nonlinearities will probably not find all they want in Ciarlet; however, the book has an excellent bibliography with many pointers to additional literature.

This book is great for those that work in flow area and even for the advance workers in this area.
A lot of explanation about the differents methods of flow measument. Explain the best choice of flow measurement depending on your application.
Some aspet that i don't like is the type of author write, he always put some technical paper reference and some times the subject stays a little bit confuse. Other thing is about paddlewheel and thermal measurement wasn't explore a lot, especially paddlewheel that have been used a lot in this days.

This book condenses many latest papers on flow instruments into useful but brief information for instrument engineers working in industry. I found it very useful for writing flow instrument procurement and design specifications. The materials described for each type of flow instrument can prepare the engineers in a short time (within 2 - 3 days) to become a knowledgeable person in the specific area including the latest development in flow measurement. A book I carried to work without showing it to my colleaques.

A great book on designing hydraulic systems
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-04
This book is suitable for a single semester course in fluid power aimed at senior mechanical engineering students. Books on fluid mechanics will teach you how fluids move and the forces on them, but there is nothing about system design. This book shows you how to take the components you studied in fluid mechanics - pumps, valves, actuators - and build a system. In this book, each concept is presented along with a circuit diagram of an application at the time that the concept is introduced. As each component is discussed, it is placed in a circuit and some analysis of circuit performance is done as part of the discussion. This approach allows the reader to immediately apply what is being taught and encourages the reader to think about the component's operational characteristics in terms of the rest of the circuit. There are 14 laboratories that go along with the chapters to add to the applied nature of the book.

Chapter one is an overview, which is typical for such textbooks. Chapter 2 reviews the basic concepts learned in fluid mechanics - which is a prerequisite to understanding this book. Since the two key variables in a fluid power system are pressure and flow, chapter 3 discusses the various methods for controlling pressure in a circuit, and chapter 4 discusses the creation and control of flow. Chapter 5 discusses rotary actuators with a great deal of emphasis on motors. Hydrostatic transmission is covered in chapter 6, building on the material on pumps and motors in chapters 4 and 5, respectively. Chapter 7 presents an analysis of linear actuators and completes the presentation of key elements of a fluid power system. Chapter 8 is about temperature and contamination control. Characteristics of auxiliary components such as hoses, tubings, fittings, and reservoirs are covered in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 is the only chapter on pneumatics. It focuses on the difference in power transmission when using liquid versus gas. Servo valves are covered in Chapter 11 followed by a discussion of proportional valves in Chapter 12. Although chapters 11 and 12 do not require a background in control theory, you'll get more out of them if you have had a course in the subject.

This is a very good college book for the student that wants to split the difference between a shop manual and a terse academic tome. It has numeric examples throughout as well as example designs and listings of steps to take as part of the design process in order to make things ultra clear to the student. The book is also very well illustrated. I highly recommend it.

After spending literally thousands of dollars on courses, learning cd's, Macromedia Studio, etc... I was in a local book store and started thumbing through it. The simplicity of FLASH flashed through my mind. I finally got it. Everything clicked.

I bought the book, brought it home, read the entire book with lessons over the next three days, and viola- I could do professional design (or at least I feel I could).

Seriously, it is very easy to read. It is not buried in jargon, but instead uses read examples in a step by step tutorial like setting where you play with the program and get comfortable with the environment.

I seriously loved this book, and couldn't recommend and on Flash ahead of it... but don't take my word. Go to a local book store and thumb through it yourself. GOOD LUCK!

Visual Approach to Form Based Applications.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-08
Prevailing e-commerce and e-business applications are form-based, i.e., the user interaction with the systems is via a set of forms. This book presents a formal yet practical integrated solution to the design, analysis and specification of such applications. The formalism presented in the book draws on intuitive understanding of form-based systems in which the form allows interaction via message passing. The formalism allows abstraction from unnecessary details and focusing on the design and analysis of the business logic and its effect on the form.

On the practical side, the book presents a host of diagrams such as formcharts, page diagrams and screen diagrams to deal with different aspects of form-oriented design. Considering the limitations of diagrams, the authors also present a domain specific language called Dialogue Constraint Language that extends the Object Constraint Language (OCL) to accommodate the specification of dialogues in form-based applications. Relying on such a wealth of modeling artifacts, the book proposes a set of methods for the modeling of the data and communications between the different components of a form-based system.

This is a must have book for the professional analyst, modeler and programmer involved in the design, specification or development of form-based projects. The book provides the methods and the artifacts to better model form-oriented systems.

Design/Specify/Document a Forms Based System
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-09
This is a book that has been needed for a long time. There have been studies in the past, indeed a body of knowledge even, on the design of paper based forms. The problem with computer based forms such as those for ordering a book from Amazon is that the forms tend to be generated by programmers, not forms specialists. In fact in this book the examples being used are from a hypothetical on line book store.

At one point the authors are giving an example of a book page of an online bookshop. On it they give an abstract of their own (that is this) book. It reads: "What is the business logic of n enterprise system? How do I specify it in such a way that I know how to transform it into a running system, by skill and by automated tool support? This book gives a self-contained introduction to the modeling and development of business logic for enterprise systems."

In practice, the authors develop a couple of new technologies for the modelling of such forms. Page Diagrams are analagous to flow charts that show what a page does in terms of its interactions. From the home or Welcome page you can go register, go login, look at suggested books, do a search, etc. What links to what? What logic applies (bad password for instance, or is this user logged in). The page diagram is a way for the non-technical manager and the programmer to define exactly what a page or screen is supposed to do. It can become part of the specification that the programmer uses to produce what management wants.

The next concept the authors develop is the Form Storyboard. The storyboard shows pages with respect to the actions they cause in the server.

Other models such as information pages, and data interchange complete the description of the forms related system. For the most part, HTML based web sites are used as examples in this book. But the same kind of modelling is equally applicable to form/database related system such as accounting, payroll or other business applications.

Using the approach developed by these authors is the best way I've seen to document/specify/design a forms based interactive system.

The definitive book on Forth
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-27
This book presents a very good coverage of modern Forth and comes from the world's second Forth programmer, a close friend of Chuck Moore (the inventer of the language), and president of Forth, Inc., the company they founded back in 1973. Forth has been one of those sleeper languages - not as widely known as most but used in a lot of places where few are aware of the implementation language - such as the FedEx hand scanners, Sun workstation boot software and many NASA space vehicles. This book give a great introduction to Forth and is up to date with the current ANSI standard. It is a good complement to Leo Brodie's "Starting Forth" (which, by the way, Forth Inc. owns the copyright to) and brings Forth into the 21st century. If you have ever had even the slightest curiosity about Forth or would like to look at a refreshing alternative to trendy languages today, get this book. For the price, you can not go wrong and I think you will be amazed by the beauty and simplicity (and power) of Forth.

New view on Classical Electrodynamics
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-16
The differential geometric method has been one of the most
fundamental tools for theoretical physicists since its first
introduction into special relativity (general relativity) by Albert
Einstein in 1905 (1915). Later it has been applied to many research
areas, such as fluid mechanics, elastomechanics, thermodynamics, solid
state physics, optics, electromagnetism, quantum field theory, etc.

As a distinctive feature of traditional classical electrodynamics,
this book rests on the metric-free integral formulation of the
conservation laws of electrodynamics as represented by exterior
differential forms. Therefore the book will be of great interest to
graduate students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical
physics who work in field theory and general relativity.

The book consists of five parts; a short list of references and an
author and a subject index are included. Every part ends with a list
of references. The authors begin in Part A, as an introductory
section, with an elementary presentation of exterior differential
forms. The necessary geometric concepts, needed to formulate
classical electrodynamics and gravitational theory in the language of
differential forms, are explained in Part A and in Part C, too. The
axioms of classical electrodynamics, the integral formulations of
electric charge and magnetic flux conservation, are presented in Part
B. Subsequently, the linear connection and the metric are introduced
in Part C. The general framework is completed in Part D by a specific
electrodynamic spacetime relation and in Part E by applying
electrodynamics to moving continua and to rotating and accelerating
observers, for instance.

Moreover, a computer algebra program is introduced in the book in
a simple way, and some cartoon drawings will add to the tedious
mathematics some humor. As to the exposition of the book, we are
impressed by illustrations and diagrams, which support our geometrical
insight. The mathematical abstraction and physical relevance are
displayed neatly and appropriately. It is concise and comprehensive
as an introductory textbook for graduate students and a complete
reference book for researchers.

Thus, there is no doubt that many specialists will be interested
in the book under review. The book proves to be a good scientific
resource for university libraries as well as for graduate students and
researchers working in mathematical physics, field theory, and general
relativity.

A metric-free approach to Classical Electrodynamics.
Helpful Votes: 24 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-04
This is, in my opinion, the best book available on the foundations of Classical Electrodynamics. Using differential forms, the authors derive the two Maxwell equations (dF=0, dH=J) from four basic axioms in a metric-free approach. Only when two additional axioms are presented, the standard Maxwell-Lorentz theory in vacuum and in matter is developed by taking into account the metric structure of spacetime. Therefore, this framework allows for an almost trivial transition to the curved spacetime of general relativity. Moreover, the electromagnetic excitation H is considered as a microscopic field - whereas, conventionally, only the electromagnetic field strength F is considered as a truly microscopic field.

Review Date: 2004-04-20
In sciences, "simple" low-dimensional models are often called into play to understand and clarify fundamental processes involved in complicated physical phenomena. Universal models which can be applied to illustrate a variety of effects of different physical origin are rare and, therefore, they are of CRUCIAL importance.
Recently, with respect to this, Frenkel-Kontorova type models have attracted so much attention for their ability to describe a broad spectrum of phenomena of distinct physical origin as, for example, fundamental aspects in tribology and mass transport, Josephson transmission lines, DNA dynamics, charge-density waves, commensurable-incommensurable phase transitions and so on. It is possible to count almost 200 publications, in the last 5 years only, in the most relevant scientific journals related to Frenkel-Kontorova models.
Braun and Kivshar are undoubtedly internationally famous specialists in Solid State Physics and Nonlinear Physics of discrete dynamical systems, and their book represents certainly a comprehensive and exhaustive treatment (from fundamentals to recent and advanced developments) of the subject. Describing fundamental concepts and theoretical procedures of nonlinear dynamics, related numerical techniques and methods, down to possible experimental and technological applications based on this intriguing model and its generalizations, this book suits both the needs of students and beginners as well as the requests of most experienced researchers wishing to be acquainted with new and complementary aspects in this field. The table of contents, together with an up to date list of references, shows at first glance the comprehensiveness of the treatment.
Personally, as an active researcher in this field, I would highly recommend the book to both graduate students and any much more experienced scientist who is working or just interested in nonlinear dynamics and condensed matter modeling.

The definitive reference on the subject

Review Date: 2004-04-13
As an active researcher on this field, I find this book will become THE reference. The authors, with over 20 years of experience themselves, take you from the basics to the current hot topics. Their coverage is certainly exhaustive, with an up to date list of 876 references. All aspects of the Frenkel-Kontorova/sine-Gordon model are discussed, from statistical mechanics to the effect of forces through the thermal version. The mathematical details are provided but also commented upon in extent for the reader to grasp their implications. One point I particularly liked is that the connection between Frenkel-Kontorova and sine-Gordon is always kept in mind along the book, a point that had been an obscure one for me when touching upon different aspects of the problem. The chapter on applications helps make the link between the different disguises of the model. Finally, I do believe the book will be useful for a more general audience interested in nonlinear problems beyond those discussed, as most of the techniques and viewpoints apply in general. All in all, a must for researchers in nonlinear science and condensed matter models, and an excellent way to introduce oneself to this subject for anybody beginning to work on it, as no background is assumed.

The earlier editions have a chapter on Maxillofacial injuries, which has been omitted this time around. I just photocopied the chapter from an earlier edition!
I highly recommend this to all prospective surgeons- whatever your field of specialty.
