Perspective from the Get-Go: Technical Names for Multivariate Analysis Methods Decoded for Your Concrete Understanding
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-06
I'm writing about the 2nd ed. (1990), but if you landed here, I think what I have is of value for later editions too. The book is fantastic. There are a myriad of technical terms for various kinds of multivariate analyses. The average person has no idea what the names mean -- or how to choose between them! To be able to DO anything (right, anyway) you need a CONCRETE understanding. Such is what this book provides. Right off the bat, the book tells you -- not only what kind of data each technique requires -- but what questions you might ask (and want answered) for such data. So, in a mere 4 pages -- near the beginning! -- you get 1 or 2 paragraphs on each of these: factor analysis, discriminant analysis, cluster analysis, multiple linear regression, principal components analysis, and more. You'll know what these techniques require as input (what kinds of data situations) and what they assume the question(s) is/are that you want answered -- already concrete, already good understanding of the differences of the formerly cryptic technique names in a mere 4 pages! I have seen no other book do this. The rest of the book is nearly as effective in the decoding of other details of the multivariate analyses. In short, start with this book, because therein you will be way way ahead in acquiring a perspective on multivariate analyses with little effort. Go to any other book(s) first and you may eventually develope a perspective -- only by accident, that is with little author help -- after a long hard road. Get your perspective from the get-go instead -- with this book.

Excellent, low-key intro to many techniques

While this book will not teach you all you need to know about any of the techniques to be an expert, it WILL teach you enough to read research, and to learn what the various techniques do. The mathematical level is moderate, and the emphasis is on practical applications. Highly recommended for grad students in the social sciences

Only a limited knowledge of statistics is assumed!
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-22
Often, students and researchers need to perform multivariate statistical analyses on their data. Unfortunately, a lack of mathematical training prevents many from taking advantage of advanced techniques, in part, because books focus on the theory and neglect explaining how to perform and interpret multivariate analyses on real-life data. Computer-Aided Multivariate Analysis is a welcome exception, helping students choose the appropriate analyses for their data, carry them out and interpret the results. Only a limited knowledge of statistics is assumed and geometrical and graphical explanations are used to explain what the analyses do. However the basic model is always given and assumptions are discussed. In this edition the computer emphasis is enhanced by the inclusion of three additional statistical packages written for the personal computer. The authors also discuss data entry, database management, data screening, data transformations, as well as multivariate data analysis. This third edition contains a new chapter on log-linear analysis of multi-way frequency tables.

As an Information Technology consultant working w/health care professionals, I needed a standard reference to better understand my clients' needs.

I was working on my Masters of Accountancy after finishing my MBA, and I was lucky enough to find a Health Care Accounting course which used this text book.

I cannot recommend the book highly enough. If you take the time to read the different sections of the book, and read the (copious) scenario problems at the end of the section where the lessons are applied, you will acquire a much richer understanding of the accounting dynamics in health care.

I work in a health care administration postion and found the book to be very useful for refreshing me on basic accounting concepts as well as covering more complex topics of health care finance and cost accounting. I would highly recommend this book as a reference for health care institutions (especially hospitals) for orientation and as a way to educate their managers. The real-life examples and problems are invaluable for explaining the topics covered in each chapter.

Excellent on-ramp for VB devs to move to .NET
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-08
If you are a seasoned Visual Basic developer with no familiarity with .NET, C#, or Web services, this book will get you where you need to go with a minimum of theoretical explanations and examples that are straightforward and to the point. It provides a quick overview of key concepts and then plunges into practical instruction that brings VB 6 experts up to the latest rev. You don't have to learn a new language to take advantage of .NET services. I work with Deon and have worked with Eric, and they not only have the understanding but the technical chops to back up what they are saying here. Buy the book, don't wait for the movie.

Web Services for VB Folks--it's about time!

If you are like me, you may have thought that the only good Web service support for ASP.NET was offered through C#. The three guys who wrote this book show that this just isn't true.

The book doesn't spend too much time on the protocols-- instead it explains how to use them from VB. If you need to understand the SOAP and WSDL real deeply, get a different book like Seely's SOAP book from PH-PTR. This book is about writing Web services, nothing more or less. The chapter on SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI is nothing other than an overview. Hey, you've been warned.

I just got this book and more or less tore through it. The book does a great job explaining the ins and outs of creating Web services with VB.NET. I especially appreciated the great coverage of using attributes to shape the WSDL and data used in the Web service. The book really helped me out a lot. Highly recommended.

I have never met a Photoshop book that has enraptured me like this one. This guy is fantastic, he brings a new look to the power of Photoshop. I don't know a Photoshop user who won't be challenged and inspired by this book. It encompasses everything from collage and montage to painting and vector drawing and in a very accessible way. It's a winner it should get 6/5 stars.

I really can't recommend this book enough. The tutorials are easy to understand even when dealing with advanced techniques. It could be a bit much if you are brand new to Photoshop but I doubt it. I don't think anyone looking into purchasing a book of this types would be at all disappointed. There are other tutorial books out there but this one has subjects and artwork that are truly engrossing. Not only are the tutorial format and content superb but the author offers an online community that can be accessed through his personal site. Here you can ask for help on problem areas from other readers and often the author himself and also post your own work that the lessons have hopefully helped you to create. An easy 5 stars, great work.

I purchased this book on a whim and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of its content. Lea takes readers step by step through simple and very complex design techniques. His instructions are easy to follow and, unlike many other Photoshop books I have picked up, just as easy to apply to other projects!

Having access to the author through the reader forum on the book website makes this an even more useful tool. Any tips that might seem vague are easily explained by the man who wrote the book - and other readers that have overcome similar problems. I have worked through several books on Photoshop, but this has been the best by far!

Review Date: 1999-05-12
The ultimate reference book for anyone concerned about the all too common acts of deadly violence committed by youth. Recent reports claim that both Colorado shooters had a history of animal cruelty. Animal cruelty is often a precurser to other acts of violence including child, spouse or partner and elder abuse. This book gives professionals, students and concerned citizens an understanding of that connectedness and emphasizes the need for a hoslistic approach to violence prevention.

This book is the ideal graduation gift for anyone earning degrees in psychology, criminology, social work, education, or anthropology. It is a must read for veterinary and medical school graduates. The perfect end-of-the-year teacher appreciation gift is Cruelty to Animals and Interpersonal Violence Readings in Research and Application edited by Randall Loockwood and Frank R. Ascione.

Review Date: 2008-04-11
All I can say is WOW, Geetesh has once again done a bang-up job of presenting his "cutting edge" techniques, this time for PowerPoint 2007. And also, once again, he's included an amazing CD with all kinds of helpful software on it. Because I've been using and teaching PowerPoint for a long, long time, when I opened this book I immediately looked for a "What's New in PowerPoint 2007" section, but I couldn't find it and was disappointed, but not for long. Once I opened PowerPoint 2007 on my computer and started playing around, every time I couldn't find something in the new interface, a quick glance at the index of this book and I found it immediately. And, don't let the "for Dummies" title fool you ... this book is an excellent addition to any PowerPoint user's library, from beginner through advanced user. Geetesh presents everything in a very readable fashion; it feels like he's right at the computer with you, looking over your shoulder. If you have his 2003 version of this book, this one is very similar but gets you used to using the new 2007 interface with ease.
I highly recommend this as a great reference to keep right beside your computer whenever you are working in PowerPoint 2007.

As a presentation designer and author of Presentational Skills for the Next Generation even I found inspiration within the contents of this delightful book. Yes, delightful is the operative word. Geetesh Bajaj's sense of humor sprinkled throughout was a refreshing change from ordinary skills books. His mix of clear explanations and helpful hints prove his credentials and expertise with PowerPoint are solidly established. If you are looking to add to your knowledge quickly or are just learning how to add the power of PowerPoint presentations to your marketing program this is the book you will want to read from cover to cover. And don't miss the free CD with Bonus Chapter, tools and resources too.

Good De-Interlacing Information
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-09
This book has a lot of good information on de-interlacing, motion estimation, and interlace versus progressive display. One chapter contains a particularly nicely done survey and objective evaluation of 16 de-interlacing algorithms. A few of the algorithms listed (including one covered in detail later in the book) were developped by the authors. There are also discussions of the history & future of interlacing, the impact of interlaced and progressive video on MPEG-2 encoding, and the impact of interlace on displays.

My only problem is that the authors don't mention where to find software or hardware implementations of the recommended de-interlacing algorithms. This information would have been a valuable addition to the book.

This is a great book that you must have if you are interested in post video processing. or research in digital video processing. It describes the both approaches from non-motion compensation and motion compensation deinterlacing in depth and details. There are a lot of comparisons with other algorithms. The best part yet is the 3-D recursive search block matcher which checks the neighboring blocks in quarter pel resolution for 3 fields and the majority selection for different de-interlacing algorithms. If you have some algorithms for de-interlacing, you can apply the concept for majority selection in terms of performance and quality selection. The research on de-interlacing work is from Philips Research lab. Some works of de-interlacing have been implementated on Trimedia chip with enhancements in both hardware and software

Very good and unique book on de-interlacing techniques

Review Date: 2006-02-08
The intended audience for this book are research and development professionals in image processing. This is not a book for video hobbyists, but instead you should at least be at the advanced undergraduate level in electrical engineering or computer science to fully grasp the concepts presented. The book's goal is to show a survey of well-known deinterlacing algorithms and then go into details of how you can improve upon these algorithms. The book is divided into three major parts: basic technology, system optimization, and the future of interlace, and contains the following chapters:
1. Introduction
2. Overview of de-interlacing algorithms
3. Motion estimation on interlaced video
4. Improving motion-vector accuracy
5. On the optimization of de-interlacing
6. MPEG-2 coding efficiency of interlaced versus progressive video
7. Display formats
Chapter 2 appears to be an expansion of a paper that the authors wrote entitled "De-interlacing an overview". When I first read that paper I found it to be the clearest I had ever read on the subject, yet their book manages to improve it further. The emphasis is on the authors' own algorithm -adaptive recursive deinterlacing.
Likewise, chapter 3 is an expansion of the authors' paper "Motion estimation on interlaced video". The authors examine and compare the performance of block matching algorithms, true motion estimation, global-based models, and object-based motion models.
Chapter 4 examines accuracy of motion vectors, improving block-based motion estimation, and using interpolation to improve accuracy.
Chapter 5 examines the optimization of interlacing and introduces the Majority-Selection de-interlacer, which combines the strengths of several individual de-interlacing algorithms into a single output signal. This material is from the authors' paper "Majority selection de-interlacing; An advanced motion-compensated spatio-temporal interpolation technique for interlaced video".
Chapter 6 looks at the MPEG-2 video coding standard and discusses the efficiency of interlaced versus progressive video on an MPEG-2 digital channel. This chapter draws heavily from the authors' paper "On Coding Efficiency and Scan-Rate Conversion".
Chapter 7 borrows heavily from the authors' paper "Towards an Optimal Display Television Format". In this chapter the authors explore a new display format free from television history. From their various experiments the authors form an overall preference for a 75 Hz interlaced scanning format.
The appendices deal with the TGST de-interlacer, and is largely drawn from the authors' paper "Advanced Motion Estimation and Motion Compensated Deinterlacing" in which they combine two well-known algorithms.
I found the book very enlightening. The authors do a good job of tying the various papers from which this book was formed into a cohesive format. Although there is a heavy and necessary use of mathematics, their writing style is very accessible and clear. If you are not sure you want to spend so much money on one book, you might try downloading off the web the papers I mentioned in this review. It will give you a good idea of the book's content and let you know if you like the authors' writing style. Personally, I highly recommend this book.

As an environmental engineer, I use Delphi to develop standalone applications to access and analyze large water supply data bases. I have over 30 years experience developing and using water quality and quantity models in everything from FORTRAN to Delphi.

Of all the Delphi books I have used, this one is the most readable for the non-professional programmer, using a minimum of jargon and less focused on business applications. It has never failed to provide the hint I needed to move ahead on a programming problem. While not as comprehensive as other Delphi guides, such as Pacheco & Teixeira's, the information it presents is more accessible for quick reference. I look forward to Todd & Kellen coming out with an updated version for Delphi 4.

I have many SDM related books written by American, so I buy this book as it is (seems to be) from Europe. Not amazing that the content layout is quite different from the others.

For example, in this book, you will find some interest topics like constructing a SDM ADC by LF356 and CD4013 (bandwidth is limited to few hundred Hz as we can all expected), and some non-ADC or DAC applications of SDM techniques (presented in last chapter, which really inspire me).

You may need some other books if for designing a practical SDM products, but this book is really good for students or system design engineers, due to its simplicity.

If you have problems in understanding other delta-sigma books, Bourdopoulos' book will be good for you.
I am searching for an introductory book for my students, but most other books are either too difficult or focused on narrow topics.
Bourdopoulos has many step-by-step explanations for equations that other books skip.
Also, I like that the authors are providing solutions for the end-of-chapter problems on the web.
