Simply GreatReview Date: 2008-02-06
A great book, but needed a little more Java.Review Date: 2008-01-06
I was already sold on Flex, and was pretty experienced with it and was looking for an advanced book. So I didn't find the first 200 or so pages that helpful. Chapters 1-4 (Introduction to other RIAs, Getting Familiar with Flex, Flex Builder environment, and a simple Flex app) really weren't appropriate for a book purported to be for professionals, in my opinion.
The treatment on Java integration wasn't what I expected, although most of it was still interesting and helpful.
The second half of the book really shines, and more than makes up for any of its shortcomings (and more than justifies the price as well). The treatment of creating advanced custom Flex components is excellent. The authors walk you through the creation of several advanced components that are in and of themselves very useful, as are the concepts covered.
Their coverage of several other advanced topics (debugging, charts, integrating with external applications) was not only helpful, but not really covered anywhere I've been able to find online (although that may have changed in the past 4 months since I purchased the book).
I'd definitely recommend this book to others.
Build Total Confidence in Developing Truly Rich Web ApplicationsReview Date: 2007-07-22
This remarkably in depth book begins by taking you on a short but important journey through recent history of Java, Ajax and Flex to consolidate your approach to Rich Internet Application development. You quickly become familiar with the Flex development environment and build reusable components grasping development techniques by example. Each chapter is well explained and easily understood as you work your way to developing your sophisticated programming skills within a matter of days.
The book unambiguously covers the most important techniques for binding Flex applications to data sources whether by XML data transfer, JAVA Beans, Enterprise (binary) Database Integration, Web Services and or to external applications. You also learn advanced techniques in extending Flex components, extending Flex Charts, and building data and destination aware controls you can quickly reuse in other applications.
It's a magnificent piece of work by smart guys who have truly grasped and then conveyed the magic of Rich Internet Application Development. Thank you for this noteworthy achievement. It's worth more than 5 stars!

I'm a fan of Yakov Fain's blogs, so I may be a little biased, but the guy knows his stuff forwards and backwards.
If you're an old Java pro but new to Flex 2 then this book may be a perfect fit for you.

A real find!Review Date: 2000-12-20
Excellent read and reference, especially on Quattro ProReview Date: 2000-11-03
The coverage of the applications is where the book really shines. The material progresses from rudimentary tasks to very advanced topics with respect to each application. The hours dedicated to WordPerfect 9 and Quattro Pro 9 were particularly helpful. The Quattro Pro material is simply the best spreadsheet application tutorial I've ever had the pleasure of reading. The hours build on each other very nicely, and everything is carefully explained and presented in the screenshots. There's also quite a bit of good humor here, too, which keeps the material from getting too dry.
Sometimes you've got to take the "24 Hours" reference in the title with a grain of salt. Not this time. I managed to work my way through each chapter in about an hour, usually including the exercises that appear at the end of each hour. Although I've had to go back to certain material to refresh my memory, the index is well-done, making the book very useful even after you've read it cover-to-cover.
All in all, an excellent, and relatively concise, introduction to using the most powerful office suite on the Linux platform. The authors' enthusiasm, knowledge, and teaching ability really shines through, making this a great tutorial for users of all levels.

A great resource for understanding performance issues in R/3Review Date: 2000-04-03
Initially, I was disappointed that there was not a thorough discussion on platform-specific performance issues, but after seeing how well the R/3 aspects are covered, I recommend this book to any R/3 Basis administrator faced with the task of tuning a production system.
The fact that the author is part of SAP's TCC group is obvious. I consider this an advanced text, but written simply enough for even a beginning R/3 adminsitrator to comprehend.

A very good textbookReview Date: 2000-05-05
The text is very clearly written. An undergraduate physics / engineering level of understanding of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics is sufficient background for most the textbook. Most of the calculations are done semi-classically which helps for people not well versed in quantum mechanics. It also serves nicely as a reference text.
Topics covered include:
- Grazing incidence optics
- Normal incidence multi-layer mirrors
- Synchrotron radiation
- Cyclotrons, wigglers and undulators
- Plasma physics with applications to EUV and X-ray sources
- Fresnel zone plates
- Coherence
- EUV and X-ray lithograpy
- ...
The textbook stands alone nicely ... you do not need to constantly look up results in other sources and texts.
The textbook also contains a wealth of reference materials (several appendices of atomic data for X-ray transitions, cross sections, mathematical tables, ...)

A big book but worth it!Review Date: 2008-03-12
Good for getting new users up to speedReview Date: 2004-07-13
If you need super-deep coverage of a specific application, this is probably not the book for you. If you need a very good overview of the entire suite and what's new and improved, get this book.
A few of the really nice things I liked about this book were the full index and the chapters in the back on macros and VBA...very useful.

A jump-startReview Date: 2008-07-02
Nevertheless, the quality of some of these schematics and diagrams need to be revised in future editions. Furthermore, there are some missing notations with some of the curves discussed; such as in Figure 1.14. I would be happy to see the word (Absolute Threshold in dB) on the vertical axis and the (Frequency in Hz) on the horizontal axis instead of AT (f), f.
In spite of these anomalies, I found the book to be deserving of esteem and respect. For me, the most interesting chapters were those covering linear prediction, PCM, algebraic CELP and speech quality assessment.

A useful summary of alternative approachesReview Date: 2005-02-23
It consists of six chapters, each with an original authored section, one or more reprinted articles, and case studies. It is primarily designed as an academic textbook, but some of the sections provide useful summaries for practitioners.
Those whose experience of strategic planning is limited to traditional approaches will find the summaries of alternative approaches and their application useful and enlightening. Those who are familiar with the modern range of approaches may find the book provides a useful overview of alternative approaches to strategy and why some work better than others, and also some useful tools. As with all books of this kind, one is left to wonder whether the success of strategies outlined in the case studies is the result of superior technique or analysis, or simply a happy accident, and what lessons can be learned from the cases by those faced with developing a strategy for their own business.
One notable lack is the absence of any discussion of the role of scenarios in the development of strategies.

Well organized, solid materialReview Date: 2002-02-28
However, what I like most about this book is (1) its organization where you can directly jump to the chapter of interest with minimum overlap between chapters and (2) its coverage which is very fundamental, deductive and solid, staying away from ad hoc arguments.

A true gem among strength booksReview Date: 2008-05-19
Here are the chapters:
part 1: The science of strength
part 2: Specific applications of the methods
part 3: Training tools: weight releasers
part 4: Training tools: jumpstretch bands
part 5: Training tools: other effective training tools
part 6: The integrated training plan
part 7: Special Topic: EMS for sports
part 8: Special Topic: Explosive strength exercises
part 9: Special Topic: Women and strength training
part 10: Special Topic: Eccentric Quasi-Isometrics
part 11: Conclusion
The chapters may appear to be somewhat plain to many of you...they are not! There are many subcategories within each chapter. (For example, a thorough explanation of the techniques used in manipulating the effects of concentric, eccentric, isometric, and Kinetic energy accumulation training is in the first chapter.)
The book is full of charts to clearly demonstrate how to use variations of the various topics (timing, percent of maxes, etc.) for specific results. Get this book and you will be glad you did. It's a real goldmine. Thanks goes out to Coach Thib for this masterpiece!

This book does not focus much on designing rather explains all about integration with Java\J2EE. I believe you will also start liking ActionScript as much as Java after reading the book.
There are some printing mistake is there in the code sample, so dont blindly copy and paste the code. Hope those will be fixed in the next version.
Thanks,
