Very Good Book for Using Flash and After Effects!Review Date: 2008-07-18
Chris Jackson has hit on the right amount of technical detail and practical content to make this book easy enough for a beginner to follow, while still keeping it interesting for intermediate users. My 11 year old son and I used this book and went through the projects together. We enjoyed it very much!
Highly recommended!
An excellent guide to animation in two media!Review Date: 2008-04-09
He has, and it's a winner. Most computer animation books are heavy going, but this one is easy and fun to read. There is no waste, no padding, no jargon, just solid information. It is easier to animate 'parented' puppets in After Effects and export in Flash than to work in Flash alone--the enjoyable exercises on the enclosed DVD will have you up and animating your own characters in no time at all.
I can recommend this book to anyone who is interested in hand drawn computer animation.

Statistics: More Interesting The Second Time AroundReview Date: 2000-08-02
"Statistics and Probability" is one of those amazing sciences that we take for granted from childhood, but the more we think about it (as we get older, regrettably), it begins to dawn on us that this is the catalyst of many mysterious processes, such as the forces of life overcoming entropy. Science has rather recently discovered that there is really no such thing as "randomness", with the advent of Chaos Theory bringing down the walls of the last bastion of that idea. Statistics and Probability then become the focus of means by which some form of Higher Intelligence manages to do its business under our noses without us having a clue as to its presence!
Excellent stats primerReview Date: 2007-06-13
The book is subdivided in two parts. The first part teaches you the basics. The second part is a good reference section often covering some more advanced material.
I also recommend the other two books in this "Forgotten" series if you care to refresh other math areas: Forgotten Algebra and Forgotten Calculus.

First bible of fuzzy systems theory since Dubois and Prade.Review Date: 1998-10-02
The applications section presents theory which could be useful in applications rather than the applications themselves. References are given, but no distinction is made between theoretical work and real-world applications, and many of the references are old and out-of-date.
For a reference book on fuzzy mathematics, this book is superb; as a pointer to real-world applications, it leaves something to be desired.
Robust treatment of fuzzy logic has interdisciplinary appealReview Date: 1998-09-22
One of the most important book to learn about fuzzy logicReview Date: 1998-01-08
Care is neededReview Date: 2006-05-19
First off, read the proofs in this carefully and figure out if they do work. Klir and Yuan know that appealing to contradiction in theorem proving doesn't often work out in fuzzy theory. Yet, they go ahead and use it almost recklessly. One example is their proof on fuzzy numbers that says that they are all continuous on pages 99 to 100. After about a full, condensed page of mathematical reasoning they say that left fuzzy numbers are continuous from the left and that right fuzzy numbers are continuous from the right. After their supposed "proof" they claim that "The implication of Theorem 4.1 is that every fuzzy number be represented in the form of (4.1)." 4.1 shows a discontinuous fuzzy number. A jump discontinuity to speak more specifically. Consequently, their supposed "theorem" doesn't exactly work as a "theorem". Perhaps I misunderstand and they have some different idea of continuity. I don't get it though and neither does any other mathematician, as any break in a function whatsoever means discontinuity.
More interestingly, some of their axioms for fuzzy set don't hold. For instance, on page 62 Axiom i1 (i for intersection) says that i(a, 1)=a, which they label as the "boundary conidition." This does hold for drastic products. However, it doesn't hold for all fuzzy intersections. As Buckley and Eslami point out the axioms or necessary conditions for fuzzy intersections work out as "(1) 0<=a, b<=1 and i(a, b) is in
[0, 1]; (2) i(1, 1)=1; and (3) i(0, 1)=i(1, 0)=i(0, 0)=0." Consquently, (ab)/max{a, b, .5} qualifies as a fuzzy intersections. Here i(.6, .4)=.24/.6=24/60=2/5=.4
I don't exactly mean the above to significantly downgrade the work of Klir and Yuan. Their collection of papers of Zadeh does have signficant value, even if it costs a lot. The sheer enormity and very comprehensive nature of this quasi-encyclopedia makes it worth the read. The problems are interesting and challenging, if you choose to do them. I do appreciate the authors mentioning that the problems are meant to enchance the reader's understanding. That Klir and Yuan provide a comprehensive bibliography and consulted many, many original papers before and while writing their text alone indicates they do know something and did some thinking here. Their graphs do help to illustrate their ideas. So, I do advise that you read the book. Just read carefully.

Get HiredReview Date: 2005-07-19
Working proof of 'Get Hired'Review Date: 2001-03-27
I got the job! This is the best book I've read for interviewing.Review Date: 2006-07-15
Moreover, my confidence soared since I was not so anxious about how I was being judged in interviews anymore. I knew I was giving a good representation of myself and I knew how to answer questions. I used to fumble when "gut feel" interviewers started off by skimming my resume, simply asking, "tell me about yourself." Now I knew exactly what to say and how to say it.
Green's book does not contain any canned lines that zing your interviewer, as there's no such easy gimmick like that. Rather, Green helps you hone your own personal approach to help interviewers see you for what you really are. You then rehearse your own specific behavioral-interview examples that demonstrate your merit. They'll know your skills and experience. In addition, Green helps you answer the "tough" questions and coaches you to manage the whole meeting, including body language and the interview small-talk. They'll feel confident hiring you.
The book was an easy read, too; I whizzed through this book in two days. If you get only one book, this is the one. I would also recommend getting books for writing resumes and cover letters specific to your industry. I had been trying to get the job as a high school math teacher for nearly two years, and now I've landed it. Get this book! Good luck and hang in there job seekers!
Great coach, book! Boosts your EQ+IQ.Review Date: 2001-06-23
EQ. Emotional Quotient. The author is definitely a Ph.D. in Psychology. He is good. He makes it all sound natural, reasonable, approachable, doable. Provides motivation in simple human terms. Discusses fear, hopes, competition, courage, determination, anxiety, self-steem.
IQ. Intellectual Quotient. The book expands the scope and effectiveness of your analytic capacity applied to the job-search process. The book gives you a simple working methodology to visualize and analyze what is fundamental to find a job.
Whatever you do, before you start selling you to employers, do sell yourself the idea of buying a job, of finding a good job that you will enjoy at a company that will truly help you grow.
After reading this book I felt like finding a million jobs. LOL.

PRETTY in PINK-FRUITFUL in HEARTS!Review Date: 2008-04-07
The teaching throughout is extremely helpful in helping us connect to each other and to God. The stories and teaching help her APPLY God's Word to her life, and gives us an opportunity to talk about how she's feeling and what she's personally going through-then, allowing her to see it through God's eyes; helping her to make decisions pleasing to God in the "smaller things" in life-preparing her for a life-time of applying His Word to her life and making godly decisions about all things, great and small!
For memory verses I sometimes prefer other versions, but for praying, Bible reading and teaching, I really LOVE the New Living Translation-it really makes God's Word easily understandable using todays language, especially for kids.
I almost always use this translation for Praying God's Word-I used it in my "Alphabet Prayers" book and have received a great response from Moms, Grandmas and girls using them! For older Christians using this translation, it gives a deeper meaning, or newer explaination (I love digging deeper into a verse by comparing Bible versions) and for new Christians it's translated to this new generation with current language.
There are some things a bit more applicable for older girls, we'll just save those for later. Over-all this is a very wonderful Bible for girls of all ages-with timeless principles, relevant stories, and adaptable to many ages. I am very glad that we got her this Bible-and believe that she'll use and keep this one for years to come! It is ALREADY BEARING FRUIT IN HER HEART & MINE!

Excellent Book on GIS Technical InfrastructureReview Date: 2004-12-21
A clear description of the architecture of a GISReview Date: 2001-10-19
An unabashed advanced GIS textbookReview Date: 2006-12-15
This book covers GIS data structures and databases in a way that a Computer Scientist would appreciate. It covers GIS algorithms in a way that an Applied Mathmetician would like. It covers GIS topology in a way that a Pure Mathmetician could learn from. It covers uncertainty in a way that a Statistician would enjoy.
If you are, say a graduate student in mathematics or computer science and want to understand what all the GIS hype is about, you've found a great, concise volume that covers an intense amount of information. If you are a geographer who needs to formalize some language concerning theory and methods for a publication, then this is a good start.
If you are looking for something like "how to delineate a watershed in ArcView 9", skip it and look elsewhere.
Excellent introductory book on GISReview Date: 2005-01-11
Each chapter except the first, which serves as a general introduction, deals with a particular sub-discipline within GIS. Chapter 2 describes the basics of databases.
Chapter 3 clarifies important topological and metric concepts.
Chapter 4 enters the area of field vs. object data models.
Chapter 5 deals with raster and vector structures as well as with computational geometry and geometric algorithms.
Chapter 6 moves even closer to the physical computer level and discusses indexes (access structures) and trees.
Chapter 7 is about architectures (distributed, homogeneous, heterogeneous systems).
Chapter 8 talks about GIS-interfaces.
Until that point, the book has a very logical structure with each chapter being the logical extension of the next.
Chapters 9 and 10 exist only in this second edition and provide some brief excursions into the topics of handling uncertainty and time in GIS respectively. They go into somewhat less detail than the previous chapters, yet are very well written.
Remember that this book is introductory, hence dont expect to learn the intricate details of topics such as databases and computational geometry. The authors manage however, to strike a fine balance between the amount of concepts and methods being presented and the degree of detail to which each of them is analysed. Therefore the book retains its clear introductory character while maintaining a very high informational content. In addition, the authors have done a fantastic job at compiling relevant bibliographies at the end of each chapter where the readers may pursue additional details should they wish to. The graphics and figures are also self-explanatory and do a fine job at complementing the text. Verbosity and typos are scarce if at all existent.
I recommend this book as the most comprehensive overview of, and a very good reference source for, GISs. It will be invaluable not only for newbies but also for mid to hi-level experts who wish to consolidate their knowledge or have a trusted reference. Undoubtedly, an indispensable resource in the library of anyone interested in geographic information systems.
