This book is very good for all types of projects. It covers setting up a project, organizing the work, managing a project, handling several projects at once, dealing with project issues and crises, using modern technology such as groupware and the Internet. The approach of establishing an issues data base and relating issues to specific tasks in a project is unique. It is very useful.

This is one of the best project management books for introducing employees to modern project management in an interesting way. Most project management books are ver dry and lack realistic examples. Thus, it is difficult to motivate people to read and use such materials. This is a very practical, down to earth book that has many guidelines that you can use immediately as you read the book. Some of the strengths of the book are: 1) best description of matrix management; 2) use of collaborative tools in managing projects; 3) how to deal with multiple projects; 4) how to share resources across several projects; 5) how to deal with risk in projects. The authors have developed a very creative and useful approach in dealing with project risk that associates project risk with unresolved issues. I highly recommend this book.

Project management for the 21st century is one of the most usable, easy to read, and complete project management books. There are good examples. Techniques are modern--better than that available in other books. This books stresses working together, sharing information, and dealing with resources that are spread among various projects. Very good reference.

This book provides the basics of project management in an easy to use casual style. It proceeds step by step through building a plan and then managing a project. The chapter on project costing is good, but could use some more detail. The modern and historical examples are usefully examined. These could be expanded more later.

This book not only gives you all of the basics, but also highlights how to use the Internet for project management. Very useful material.

The QuiickBooks 2008 Solution Guide is a very helpful resource. It saves time by having solutions to many common problems users encounter in QuickBooks. The book is very well organized and extremely useful in the practical world of small business accounting.

Laura's done a great job of not only explaining the how of QuickBooks but the why. As a QuickBooks consultant this book is a must for all of my staff and will be a strong recommendation for my clients.

I found this book extremely helpful and most importantly easy to read and understand. I would recommend it for anyone who uses QuickBooks on daily bases or is just an occasional user. The book does a great job at describing common scenarios or problems that one may encounter along with clear solutions and suggestions for corrections.

This book is a great book to keep handy. I supply it with many of my QuickBook classes as a resource for the students. It's easy to follow for the new user but also in depth where it needs to be for the experienced user. The table of contents and index allow you to find what you need quickly whenever you need it.

This book is definitely a solid way to start in Riemannian geometry. The topics chosen give a glimpse of more advanced topics that the reader can venture to next, and the order covered leaves little confusion. The book is to the point, with little conversation about the concepts except at the very beginning of each chapter.

I only have two complaints, but neither would cause me to lower the rating to 4 stars.

1. There could be more "deep" exercises that allow the reader to explore more of the subtleties of the subject. And for what exercises there are, the author sometimes gives far too much away in "hints."

2. The book does not take a unified approach to the subject that fits nicely with the full generality of the theory. This is probably what makes the book good to start with, but there is still going to be a somewhat difficult transition from this book to a typical differential/riemannian geometry book. Namely, the basic language of vector bundles, pull backs/push forwards, tensors and tensor fields are either covered in a very specific framework or not at all.

I had the pleasure of taking a course in Riemannian Geometry from the author himself, using the Portuguese version of this book. Do Carmo managed to cover the whole thing in one semester without breaking a sweat; I don't know how he managed, or how we did. The fact is that the book is extremely well-written. It provides geometric insight but doesn't avoid computations. Also, the choice of topics is great, and they are ordered in a way that enhances the logical unity of the whole. The English translation seems to be every bit as good as the original. For a first course in Riemannian Geometry, this book might make a geometer out of you.

This is really a very good book to start Riemannian Geometry (RG). Exposition of key concepts of RG (affine connection, riemannian connection,geodesics, parallelism and sectional curvature, ...) are well motivated and concisely explained with numerous motivating and not so difficult execises. The book is self contained convenient for self study. It contains an introductory chapter on mathematical background explaining basic concepts as differentiable manifolds, immersion, embedding and so on, which are necessary to deal with RG. I have essentially one basic remark about this book. Formulation of RG as presented in it, is a little bit dated. Now, with the development of geometric algebra and Geometric calculus most, if not all, mathematical concepts needed to study RG like covariant derivative, curvature, and general tensors can be formulated without ressort to coordinates and in a manner to highlight their essential geometric features. Moreover derivation of certain formulae can be much easier and natural. For example the author defines the formula for |x^y| as sqrt(sqr(|x|).sqr(|y|)-sqr(inner product(x,y))). Then explains that it is the area of two dimensional parallelogram determined by the pair of vectors x and y. The reader might be puzzled as to how this formula is obtained. In the context of geometric algebra this is derived very naturally from basic concepts. Anyway, this remark does not diminish the value of this book.

This is another well-written text by Do Carmo. I browsed through it and found I could not understand several passages because I did not know what the special symbols meant and there was no table of symbols. I plead with the publisher to add such a table to the next edition or printing.

This is the best Riemannian Geometry book after students have finished a semester of differential geometry. It gives geometric intuition, has plenty of exercises and
is excellent preparation for more advanced books like Cheeger-Ebin.

Students should already know differential geometry (Spivak "Calculus on manifolds" and Spivak "Differential Geometry Volume I" might be used there)

Warning: the curvature tensor is defined backwards as compared to Cheeger-Ebin.

Have been using code from this book with great success, extending the functionality of SSJS objects (SuperFile, SuperMail)--until now (SuperClient). SuperClient can't seem to see the [client] object in an iPlanet WebServer 4.1 environment. So, digging around in vendor supplied documentation for that version, we find [customClient]. The description of this [customClient] object is very similar to [SuperClient]. Now, while merging the functionality of the two, the book continues to be a wonderful asset.

I have been using and referring this book to development teams for the past year. An excellent tutorial and reference point for people exposing the power of Server-side JavaScript.

The book was very good with the best history of JavaScript (server and client-side) I have ever read. However, nobody in the professional world will start a project today in SSJS, the language is extinct. Only legacy web applications will be using this and there are so many better server-side languages available now.

I have scanned this book, and true to what the other reviewers have said, this book looks excellent. I like that SSJS seems to separate the business stuff from the presentation stuff (HTML) unlike ColdFusion and ASP's. How many people are using SSJS?

If any one wanted to learn good SSJS programming techniques, this is the best buy. Authors not only have real stuff but they explained in a much better way than anyother about SSJS concepts with wonderful, real life examples. Ofcourse, you shoud know about javascript fundamentals (core javascript) before you read this book and authors are very specific about the content of the book and their target is only for users of SSJS

It is one of the best books on SQL I have read. This is a good book not only for those who want to use SQL Anywhere but for all SQL Afficianodos. It is both comprehensive and compact. I found this book useful while trying to understand Mobilink. I recommend this book without any hesitation to anyone who wants to understand how everything works in SQL Anywhere.

In a word: Awesome! This is the definitive book on Sybase SQL Anywhere 9. If you use this at work, especially in a replicated environment, then you MUST have this on your shelf.

This is a down-to-earth, no-holds barred approach to dealing with the good/bad/indifferent aspects of SQL Anywhere Studio 9. I am a data architect for a company that manages over 4,600 remote databases and this book has single-handedly helped me solve issues we have been having for months.

The author, Breck Carter, is a man who has been in the trenches with "the rest of us" to solve some of the most vexing data management problems. The solutions are as simple as they are elegant.

Written in a "real-world" tone, this book gets to the nitty-gritty of 99% of problems. The chapter on Mobilink replication is worth the price of the book alone as it goes into extreme detail on the how/whens/whys of moving data around and how to best utilize this impressive feature.

Highly Recommend!

Some of the documentation in this book is included no were else besides Sybase official docs. Given that "official docs" have such a dry reputation, I was happy to find this book. Indeed it is much easier to read, and contains lots of important information for configuring and programming in your SQL environment.

This book is packed with pertinant, in-depth info. The author does not have an overly-wordy style, so there is no inflated page-count.

This book is simply a must-to-have for db-developers; it presents a complete and compact reference for experienced developers as well as it offers a comprehensive immersion in SQL Anywhere to beginners and less experienced ones.

If I had to use only one word to express my opinion about this book I would just say: RELIEF. Relief of not getting drowned again in hundred of pages of irrelevant topics, misleading information, decorative pictures and tools descriptions.

I highly recommend this book to application programmers, as myself, accustomed to flirting with different db-engines but still seeking a solid understanding relational db paradigms.

I started using Sybase SQL Anywhere before Sybase owned it--when it was called The "Watcom" Database Engine. "SQL Anywhere Studio 9 Developer's Guide" is an outstanding reference. The book was written by someone who obviously has a great deal of experience using SQL Anywhere Studio to build real-world software solutions. Highly recommended.

BUt why do VB when c# is just as easy and you can write unmanaged within it. Its just a no brainer with all the limitations of VB still.

Visual Basic Programmer's Guide to the .NET Framework Class Library is enhanced further with call-outs and highlighted sections will illustrate concepts by relating previous VB6/Windows DNA best practices with the new .NET approach. 1152 pages. User Level: Intermediate-Advanced. Highly Recommended.

I found this book to be a handy 2nd book to have on .NET programming... it doesn't have much content to help you make the transition to .NET (I'd have to recommend Gary Cornell's Programming VB .NET: A Guide for Experienced Programmers for that task), but it does do a great job of helping you find the right class libraries and write code with them once you are up and running with your language of choice.

Each chapter is focused on a namespace. The authors then spend a few pages bringing people up to speed on the spotlight technology (I am new to XML and particularly liked the intro to XML piece). Then they dive right into the details of using the .NET classes to achieve your desired end-result. The class library that ships with .NET is huge, and I found it helpful to use this book as a guide to highlight the classes I should worry about to get 80-90% of my programming work done.

Now for the cons: the sample applications could have been a bit more in-depth, and I really think they should have spent the time to make the book "bi-lingual" by providing some C# code as well - but overall, a great addition to your .NET bookshelf.

The challenge for a reference book like this is to be better the documentation that Microsoft provide - MSDN and the .Net framework SDK. My experience is that this book certainly achieves that.

For example, today I needed to show the "save file" dialog and then write the contents of a text box to a text file. I know how to do that in VB6, but I hadn't done it in VB.Net before. I searched MSDN which gave me accurate descriptions of the menthods and properties of at least four classes for writing data to files, but I still had no idea which one(s) I needed to use.

I am sure the sample code I needed is somewhere in MSDN, but I hadn't found it after 20 minutes searching when I gave up and referred to this book. In five minutes I had found what I was after, my code worked and I was able to get on with my next task. That is what this book is for. If you want to learn about the new programming features in VB.Net (like polymorphism, delegates etc) this is not your book. But if you want help getting your .Net program to talk to anything (files, printers, active directory, browsers, TCP/IP Sockets, XML/XSLT or whatever) This book will be a valuable resource.

Just note that while this book covers ASP.Net and ADO.Net, if you work with these a lot you might want more depth than is provided here. I will be considering the Wrox "ASP.Net Namespace Reference" when it is released.

Because of a project, I needed to finally make the jump from VB6 to VB.NET. After reviewig several books, I grabbed the book by Powers and Snell. It helped tremendously on the key pieces of my project. What I really like are the numerous code examples - worth the price of the book alone! I even contacted the authors to get their thoughts on something and ask a few questions. Not only did they reply with great answers, but their indepth knowledge of .NET helped finalize an important part of my project architecture. Looking forward to more titles by Powers and Snell. Thanks again guys!

Spectral theory forms a natural environment for the study of wavelets. The use operator algebras is unique and interesting. The text is written such that the analysis is precise and clear throughout. The book reads nicely without being chatty or overly terse and tiresome. Many of tge proofs are extremely well laid out. The problems are carefully chosen (ranging from challenging to knock your socks off bruisers!) so get your erasers out. Mathematicians, computer scientists, theoretical physicists working in quantum computing will likely find this book useful. Recommended to anyone working with wavelets.
A little bit of functional analysis will come in handy for those of wanting to do a self study.

This is an important mathematical reference written in excellent style. Wavelets have found applications in many areas of engineering and CS. The authors provide a detailed, rich and entertaining tour through this relatively young but important field for both math and CS/Eng. Connections are, e.g., made between advanced CS virtual-reality applications such as audio-systems processing, future applications such as quantum computing, and advanced math in functional analysis and operator theory.

This is a very well written book on the theory of wavelets and its applications. The presentation is self-contained and may serve as an introduction for someone who wants to learn about this topic. It also is an excellent book for those who have an advanced graduate degree in applied mathematics since it demonstrates how to truly understand complex concepts. This book gives a general presentation of some recent developments in wavelet theory with an emphasis on techniques that have a geometric and spectral-theoretic flavor. It can be certainly used as a textbook for graduate students as well as as a reference book for the specialists and researchers. A very nice feature of the book are the tutorials at the beginning of each chapter and some sections, which serve as summaries of main ideas and guides through the background ideas and motivation. At the end of every chapter there are plenty of excercises of various level of difficulty. Overall, this is a great book and I recommend it highly to a motivated reader.

The Book by Bratteli and Jorgensen is a superb book on wavelet's theory. It is very well written and has new and a fresh point of view on the subject. Although there are several good books on wavelets, the book by Bratteli and Jorgensen covers an important niche that has not been covered before. In particular

1- The book covers the theory of wavelets from the point of view of operators and functional analysis and will appeal to a growing number of pure as well as applied mathematicians interested in the subject.

2- The writing of the book is very appealing: every chapter starts by a tutorial that gives motivation as well as intuition. It is then followed by a very clean mathematical development of the subject, together with many examples, figures, and applications from physics and engineering. A set of nice problems is provided at the end of each chapter. Thus this book can be used as a graduate textbook or for mathematical seminars in mathematics departments.

3- This book can even be used by experts in wavelet theory for learning about recent developments and new perspectives from operator theory and functional analysis.

I highly recommend this book.

This is a book about an important topic in applied mathematics by two authors with excellent credentials in both pure and applied areas. The reader will find many intriguing threads connecting wavelets to other parts of mathematics, including a wavelet index theorem, quantum computing, the ubiquitous C*-algebras O_n and, of course, spectral theory. The graphics are meticulously done.

I look forward to learning a lot from it.

As a retired HR exec I frequently assist friends and relatives with their resumes and the job hunting process. This book has been a staple for me and those I help for many years. I first found it when my own company was bought out and I was laid off. It helped me and is full of wonderful advice that is useful for any job hunter. Absolutely the first book I recommend to people who are looking for job hunting help. I bought this copy because I wanted to make sure I had a spare copy in case the one that I lend out all the time fails to come home someday!

This is an excellent book. Together with other books, this is what is needed in a job search. The author has done a great job in pulling together the elements which spell success in the quest for employment. I recommend it.

When I was out of work, and wanting to make a career change, I went to the library and, literally, checked out a three foot stack of resume and cover letter books.

I sat them next to my couch, got a glass of iced tea and went to work perusing the pages. Right away it was evident that, for the most part, the only thing different about these how to tomes was their cover. Inside was the same tired advice and the same over used examples of resumes and cover letters.

Guess what? As an employee candidate your job is to stand out from the crowd, not blend in with it.

I had just about given up on my reading (and was getting more depressed by the minute) when I came across "Who's Hiring Who?" I could tell right away that it was different, the question was, would I have the guts to run free, as the book encouraged, or would I continue to run with the herd?

When I read "Who's Hiring Who" I was three months into a job search. After this much time spent looking for work (and I was at it 12 hours a day!) I told myself that my resume, which took form based upon a lot of the ancient advice in the mainstream resume books, wasn't working and I wasn't going to lose anything by trying the advice in "Who's Hiring Who?"

It took me a week to read the book, really think about the suggestions it made, and then distill it's principles into my new QUALIFICAITONS BRIEF. No more resumes! Other no mores? No more worrying about a spotty work history. No more worrying about an incomplete (that means little or no college) education. The book tells you the best ways to accentuate the positive and marginalize the negative.

Within two weeks I had several job offers on the table. Within a month I had done more than get a job, I had successfully changed careers and was working for a hot software company with benefits out the wazoo and a pay rate higher than I'd hoped for!

(Since then I've read Tom Peter's book, "Circle of Innovation" (I think that was the book), which, when talking about resumes says who cares about education, companies want to know what you've done. What have your successes been? This is one thing "Who's Hiring Who?" focuses on.)

My advice to you? Buy the book, follow its advice and have the guts to change!

I bought this book a few years ago, right before I moved to a new city. I have to say it is one of the BEST books, if not THE best book available for writing that all-important resume. Contrary to the individual who said it needed updated due to resumes being entered and searched via a database, I think the book is just fine as it is. This book does NOT tell you how to write a traditional resume, which is probably why the reviewer didn't think it worked and needed updated for database search...it isn't formatted like the online resume searches. However, it does instruct the reader on how to write something even better: a Qualifications Brief. A resume and a qualifications brief are similar and are meant to do the same things, but whereas a resume describes a persons past positions and his or her responsibilities, a QB describes the actual QUALIFICATIONS the person has that makes him or her the right candidate for the specific job for which he or she is applying. That makes all the difference to the employer, who gathers his or her important first impression of the applicant from the submitted dull resume or uniquely different QB. I know from personal experience: I sent out two QBs after I moved and I got call-backs for BOTH submissions. I'm currently in my 5th year of employment for one of them. I also wrote a QB up for a friend of mine and she too got hired within days of sending it out. Neither of us have ever had such prompt responses when sending out a normal, traditional resume. My advice: buy this book; it's definitely worth every penny!

I used to think that this was the best resume book on the market. It helps you to understand that a resume should be something carefully crafted and designed with a goal in mind. I'm just not sure how useful it is in 2000. Today your resume is entered into a database and a search is done on key words to find you. This book needs to be updated. The last update was in 1989. A lot has changed in the hiring industry since then. Why has this book not been updated?

I pencil in the date that I finish reading each article in James R. Newman's four volume, "The World of Mathematics" After a good many years, I now find that I am more than halfway through Newman's remarkable collection that spans 2500 pages.

Newman described his work as "a small library of the literature of mathematics form A'hmose the Scribe to Albert Einstein, presented with commentaries and notes". The topics have been chosen with care. Newman preceded each article with a thoughtful commentary.

The individual articles are not abridgements, but are reprinted in their entirety. Some articles are short, some quite long, some are easy reading, some are difficult, but few are overwhelming.

I have not systematically read section by section. I find that I skip around. Often, after Newman introduces me to some mathematical topic, I find myself sidetracked, exploring other books and authors. But eventually I return to Newman, select another article, and begin the cycle again.

The Newman collection was published in 1956 as a boxed set that occasionally shows up in used bookstores. More recently, the four volumes have become available in soft cover (a Dover reprint) and can be purchased individually.

What makes Newman collection so remarkable? The answer is great original papers, great authors, and wide ranging topics.

Imagine reading Descartes on Cartesian coordinates, Whitehead on mathematical logic, Weyl on symmetry, Dedekind on irrational numbers, Russell on number theory, Heisenberg on the uncertainty principle, Turing on computer intelligence, Boole on set theory, and Eddington on group theory.

I enjoy the biographical and historical articles scattered throughout the four volumes. I especially liked Bell's article "Invariant Twins, Cayley and Sylvester", The Great Mathematicians" by Turnball, and G. H. Hardy's "A Mathematician's Apology".

Mathematicians try to define just what is mathematical thought and how a mathematician creates mathematics. Clifford writes about "The Exactness of Mathematical Laws", Von Neumann on "The Mathematician", Weyl on "Mathematical Way of Thinking", Poincare on "Mathematical Creation", Newman on "Godel's Proof", and Russell and Whitehead separately offer their thoughts.

This is the "World" of mathematics. Newman's assemblage also includes a fascinating, eclectic mix of articles that I have not encountered elsewhere like "How to Hunt a Submarine", "Durer as a Mathematician", "A Mathematical Approach to Ethics", "Geometry in the South Pacific", and "The Vice of Gambling and the Virtue of Insurance".

I have had great fun wandering through this four volume set from section to section, article to article. I assume that someday I will finally read the last article. I expect that I will simply begin again. It would be hard to say good-bye to Newman's collection.

You will slowley understand how mathematics is not just about numbers and counting and measurement. Will slowley begin to understand the unbelievable depth of abstractions it aims to capture. you will begin learning the structure and nature of mathematics..its approaches to modeling the intutive world and then..extend it! In a way you will learn what the mind is capable of and is ultimately trying to acheive!

A personal note: I started reading it during my undergraduate and after more than 10 years, still go back to it for more light. Thanks to Prof. Chandrasekar for recommending this to me.

This four volume set is a gem. I bought this treasure back in 1973 but I still go back to it at least twice a week. The writing is uneven because of the different authors who have contributed articles. However, the substance of the book is top notch. Starting with the number system all the way to the differential calculus and parts of game theory, the book is a treasury of mathematical delights. Just pick a chapter, and you are sure to be sucked in. Another point I wish to make is the design and layout of the books. There are no slick, extra large, shiny page designs here. Just plain 6 by 8 size pages with appropriate black and white diagrams. This is when books used to be more like friends, often in one's company, and much perused. It is truly a shame that this series is out of print. If you happen to find it somewhere introduce yourself!!

I took a seminar with her group when AAA National downsized. (The book was the parachute!) It requires dedication to work your way through it but the payoff is worth it. Do it, it's an investment in yourself.

As an HR professional, I've read a lot of resumes and over the years I've written them for myself as well. I have found that the use of "buzz" words and how these resumes are written catches the recruiters attention much better the the average resume. This is probably the 10th copy of this book I have purchased. I give them out to those looking for jobs and there are several copies in my professional library. This book not only tells you how to write an effective resume but gives you samples of buzz words and phrases. An excellent reference book.

WORD-UP!

Having recently purchased 16 books on the subject and a professional in the field, I suggest you'll be in deep trouble if one of your competitors reads this book before you.

It is, at once, the supreme effort on the market.

Best you read it FIRST and learn what makes a "rez-u-may" SELL. (You'll also learn to love "Peanut Butter Sandwiches".)

For those intensely serious about a great resume, I suggest two additional five-star books:

1. "Gallery of Best Resumes" by David Noble. Terrific examples of excellent layout and design.

2. "Resumes for Dummies" by Joyce Kennedy. All around good advice.

Follow the suggestions in these three books and you'll consistently write a winning resume.

Remember, "WORDS" can change your life.
