This book will be a very helpful tool for anyone using the new image-editing software to improve drawings and paintings. There are a number of examples that show what today's software will allow an artist to do. It gave me new ideas to try as I experimented with software, my scanner and digital camera. This book would be great for anyone who is looking for some great ideas and new approaches to art!

As a novice artist and computer user, I found this book so important and useful. It is a one of a kind book, extremely innovative and ties together both the art world and todays technology. Not only is it timely for today but will be important for the future. Bravo!!

This book was extremely helpful. It provides clear instruction and beautiful examples of how many different artists have used computer software to explore innumerable possibilities for a painting in a short period of time. Pollard and Little have presented the material in an easy to read style. It gets right to the point. An excellent tool for any artist.

This book encouraged me to buy Photoshop Elements and get started learning this powerful and complex software (I have used Microsoft's Picture It! and a watered-down version of Phtoshop before, the latter for several years). This book coveres several types of media. A number of different artists put together paintings using the software to aid in explorations of graphic ideas and planning. Basically, it is an introduction to using Photoshop (or, "...Elements") or other image editing program that demonstates the advantages, and some of the ways, a computer can be used by artists. It's chief value lies in getting you excited about expanding your tools and shows you how a computer can enhance your creativity, making it easier and quicker to explore the possibilites.

As an artist taking a Photoshop class, i was hopelessly lost in a deluge of material. This book sorts through the material and focuses only on what is necessary for an artist. Great way to take the pain out of thumbnails and value studies!

This book is sort of a handbook for both critical thinking and "real world" applications of cross-cultural psychology. It is an important book for all members of our human race as it illuminates some incredibly relevant issues pertaining to culture.

Five stars for text and for excellent supporting documentation.

It is imperative as a burgeoning professional to understand the implications of treating clients that are not of my ethic or cultural background. This book provides real insight as well as day to day understandings of the interactions we all share, from our own biases to accepting others biases. As a person, it is imperative upon me to understand those around me. Thinking critically about these issues provided me with startling new insights into myself.

After reading Dan Ablan's "Inside Lightwave 8" - more or less THE standard in Lightwave - there were more questions raised than answered. Not that Ablans approach is a bad one, it's just that he picks up so many different aspects of the program along the thread of the book, that at times it can be confusing. This isn't the fact with "Essential Lightwave v9". Although the whole covering of every aspect from the absolute beginning seems a bit cumbersome, it's worth it at the end. This over 900 pages issue helps you get into nearly every detail of Lightwave and handle the program like some kind of 3D Photoshop.
Add the companion DVD with hours of live modeling and animating, plug-ins and illustration fotos and you surely got something to start your way into 3D via Lightwave.

I am only on Chapter 6 right now but it has really helped me learn 3D the Lightwave way. The other reviews have said it better and convinced me. This is just my 2 cents to agree!

Overall, I think this is a very helpful book however it would have been better with color illustrations and the ones included are to small.

The best general Lightwave v9 book around. Masterfully written, great tutorials and clear explanations.

I agree that the pictures should have been color, but I don't think the book publisher has been able to make that a profitable venture, especially with the limited appeal of a book like this. Unfortunate, but they don't have the budget of Visual Quickstart and the like.

I am glad they spent their budget on making the content kickass. Black and white pictures just make the diagrams that much clearer ;-)

This is book contains some of the clearest explanations of Lightwave tools I have ever read. What makes this work as more than a reference (which it certainly will be for a good while) is that the tools or features are explained along with some genuine use cases for when you'd want to use such a capability. The example usages are well written and easily to visualize thanks to generous illustrations. Yes, they are small, but are well labeled.

I much prefer the Essential series (also own Essential Lightwave 8) for its concise descriptions and get-to-the-point examples. The information density here is excellent. Little if any fluff. Unlike the previous version, this one is divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced sections which might help guide your reading. I found the section on projection mapping to be worth the purchase of the book alone. I've read the Lightwave PDFs, the Wordware Lightwave Texturing book as well as numerous help forums, and web sites and I've not once had UV mapping explained so well. The tutorial on how to build a UV map for a fighter jet goes through not only the unwrapping process but the types of maps you might want to try to make better textures. This type of pragmatic advice above and beyond the goals of the tutorial are some of the great hidden benefits to this book. Often tutorials will just go far enough to explain how to do something without much hinting as to why.

Take the discussion on sub-patching as another example in the Advanced Modeling section. I've worked with sub-patch modeling for years and was always curious as to how pros decided when to use it or not. As it turns out my way of thinking was pretty close to the contents, but it always helps to read someone else's impressions. Basically this book made me go back to read some of the tools that I thought I already knew just to make sure I'm not missing something.

One thing that I had issues with is that some of the tutorials depend on plug-ins. At least in one case, the plug-in used was not included on the DVD and the link to it in the appendices was not working. I managed to find it using search engines after a while, but I'm not sure why all the used plug-ins weren't included on the DVD. This problem was in reference to one of the video tutorials on the DVD (surfacing with weightmaps).

If you own the previous version there is repeated content, but not so much as to invalidate buying this version. Its a good 33% thicker and there's much more to learn including a new section on stylized characters, character rigging, node editor, the aforementioned projections section, discussions of the new 9.x cameras, etc. I haven't made it through the whole book yet but it looks like some of the old tutorials and examples have been expanded as well.

Finally, I like the fact that you can easily come back to a section describing some functionality and re-learn without having to read a whole chapter. Often I'm in the middle of a project and want to just remember how to use a tool. I can find that section and easily refresh my skills with this book.

Bottom line: If you're anywhere near starting in on learning Lightwave you owe it to yourself to read this book. Do the examples. Watch the videos. Intermediate users can probably still benefit especially those coming back to Lightwave from an older version. I rank myself as an Advanced-Beginner (2 years Lightwave hobbiest).

I have to hand it to Mr. Comer and Stevens, they have done an excellent job writing a book that explains everything clearly with very well defined (and actually working) examples.
If you are interested in learning TCP/IP programming on Unix platform this is the only book you need.
It does assume that you have knowledge of some C programming, but it does not assume that you are an expert.
Excellent Book.

I have been using Internetworking with TCP/IP Volume III for almost ten years now to teach a graduate course on client server programming. I think it is perhaps the most perfect textbook ever written. Comer's code is exquisite and can be used to teach clear and efficient coding in C. His explanations are perfect. He says everything that needs to be said, and no more. His presentation about the foundation of all distributed computing is clear concise and on target. Students require some reminders about the fact that this book can't be read like a novel, or like any less competent textbook. They need to read and carefully consider each line. Comer includes everything that is needed in the book and its appendices. In every case, you see very careful and concise statements of how things really work. I just reread his chapter on NFS this morning and was reminded about how he can take the complex and invisible and make it completely understandable.

Professor Comer's books are wonderful, but his contributions don't stop there. If you pride yourself on writing and are new to the academic realm you might find it useful to go to his website and read his advice on writing a dissertation. If you are a PhD student, or a master's student writing a thesis, this should be a mandatory stop. If you are simply a person who takes pride in writing clearly, you will learn important things.

This is a great book and I see why some teachers chose it for grad students. I didn't do well in networks last semester because I had to learn BSD TCP/IP sockets from sources like book snippets my teacher gave me, man pages, and various Internet sources. The textbook I had to buy for class has almost no C code or any explanations about BSD sockets. So, I invested into this and the Richard Stevens (UNIX Network Programming) book. Both are excellent assests.

Pro (This book): I like how it explained what each important function did (like read/write)

Con: The example code could be a little better.

This book is well-written and will be a good reference once I'm through with my class. I bought all 3 volumes since I could get them at a great price. What especially helped: sometimes books would take up to 50 pages explaining a topic. The "Internetworking with TCP/IP" series are excellent at giving the bottom line and at times makes it easier to understand the details within the longer-winded pages of other books. In a way, to me, it's like a set of cliff notes to my textbook.

If you're baffled about network programming, these books might be worth a try.

Get all three volumes. There is no better way to learn TCP/IP. The read is excellent. The examples are very excellent. Definiirly, a classic for years to come.

I used this book from cover to cover in a Unix Socket Programming class. A few good points about this book: 1) The sample do compiled on Linux with no problems. That's a plus. 2) The author emphasized good client-server design principles. 3) The introduction is gentle and very readble. 4) The code sample is directly,simple and not riddled with unnecessary details to "show off" like some authors do.

You don't need much Unix to do exercise in this book.About the only System calls you need to know are fork(),Select(),sigalarm() and execve(). The book could have been expanded to cover HTTP,SOAP and some other protocols to give it a 5stars.

Buy Harry's book! I took Juniper factory training from Harry around 2001. He was an absolutely wonderful teacher, and a genuine expert in both JUNOS and IP networking in general. You could tell he had real-world experience to support his system knowledge as a Juniper staffer. If he writes even half as well as he teaches, this is sure to be a great resource.

This is the only and comprehensive JNCIP lab preparation book available today.The book is well written and covers complete coverage of JNCIP lab.If you understand this book you are good for the actual Lab.

I passed my JNCIP lab using this book and have scheduled my JNCIE for August 2004. I highly recommend this book to anyone that supports Juniper routers or plans to take the exam.

If you are appearing for JNCIP or read how the routing protocols operate in a multi protocol environment with Juniper routers, your best bet is JNCIP book. The book covers lot of scenarios and case studies in great detail. The author/editors need to be commended for such scintillating efforts on publishing a very good book on Juniper routers. This book not only can be used for preparing for the JNCIP exam but also you can put it in your library for reference. But one thing is for sure, this is a great book and better to have a copy f it. I have benefitted by going through this book.

Jon Courson takes you to depths you can't imagine. We have several of his books, and have never been disappointed.

I have not finished this book yet; however, I cannot seem to put it down. I love it and plan on getting the others when I finish Volume 1. Jon Courson brings up so many details as you read through the Bible that are unique and insightful, yet solidly backed with Scripture. I am learning so much. I love John Macarthur and R.C. Sproul for exegetical studies of the Bible. This, theologically, seems to be in line with them. The difference, however, is that it is soo easy to read, and you can pick it up almost like you would a favorite book and feel you've just listened to an excellent sermon. The book goes verse by verse through the Bible, printing the passages in bold (usually 1/2 to 2 verses). Below each passage, Jon comments and gives insight into the Hebrew meaning, explains the scripture and consistently shows how the Old Testament verses all point to Christ. He always backs up what he "says" with Scripture references. He writes as if he is simply talking to you, so again, it is quite easy to read even though it is full of deep truth.

Jon Courson's commentary on the entire Bible (old and new testament)is
uplifting and inspiring. He takes each verse and brings it to "life"
with historic references and application to our everyday life. It's a
great read and a great reference.

Jon really knows how to reveal the hidden thing of the Word. Much better than McGee ever could. Just phenomenal insight in this book.

His commentaries are a breath of fresh air assisting with hard to understand terms to life applications.

Mr. Ulrich has delivered a framework with which IT areas can effectively leverage their existing applications and data to meet the ever-changing business environment. Bill's chapter on Case Studies provides real life examples of how to use his methodology. We face rapidly changing business drivers, including the need to make our businesses internet-ready. This book provides the materials to allow companies a fighting chance to succeed.

I read Bill Ulrich's book and was delighted to see that he was clearing laying out strategies that we were dealing with as we worked with our clients. We now make Mr. Ulrich's book part of our mandatory reading for our consultants and have purchased copies for distribution to some of our key clients. This has helped both our consulting teams and our clients in planning and project executiion.

Mr. Ulrich understands how businesses have a tremendous reliance on legacy systems. Pressure is always on the IT staff to meet the demands of the business cusomter. The IT community is asked to bring products and services to the consumer through the internet while managing the internal demands to keep expenses under control. Bill's book lays out a framework in which the business community can build company-specific plans to leverage their prior investments while striving to meet today's business drivers in a manner that is cost effective.

Bill has filled this book with tremendous value for any one working with existing systems of any kind. He builds in the flexibility of approach by mapping many common and not-so-common methods and strategies through his exploration of specific case studies. Chapter 3 is a valuable item on its own - rarely have I seen such a thorough and clear examination of all the different 'movements' in IT in the last 10 years. Nice job, Bill.

Corporations have been trying to retire legacy systems for the past couple of decades. Each new technology (be it client/server, ERP packaged apps, etc) were supposed to put the nail in the coffin for legacy systems. Yet, legacy systems continue to thrive despite attempts to retire them. One reason why they continue to exist is that in many instances, they support business processes in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible. Bill's book views this area more as a transformation effort (evolution) rather than wholesale legacy replacement (revolution). This book is a must read for IT departments as they struggle to remain relavent in an era of outsourcing.

The strategies outlined in this book will help the IT department become a partner with functional business units in delivering solutions that address burning business problems. The focus shifts to providinig measurable value to the business as opposed to implementing unified and elegant technologies.

I am a robotics engineering masters student who is REALLY behind on his Matlab knowledge based on the fact that i have a background in biology. (Long story). I just completed my first semester and bought this book in May to learn matlab more thoroughly over the summer. This book is just FANTASTIC. I couldn't ask for more. It is structured logically, the examples are CLEAR and it just makes total sense. I never realized that it would be this readable and excellent. If you are a beginner it can truly be read cover to cover. The problems are interesting and the step by step guides are just what i needed. I initially thought twice about spending the $80 when there were cheaper texts available, but let me tell you from experience, don't bother. I have read some other Matlab texts and they pale in comparison to this one. It is worth every penny. If you have a limited knowledge or are without any knowledge of Matlab GET THIS BOOK. It is great and worth the extra money.

This is the book for you if you are new to MATLAB. The book covers the basic steps of MATLAB and how to apply them to real word engineering or mathematical problems in an interactive environment.

The book is well written and is very easy to use. This is a great book for the beginner, but I would not recommend the book for anyone that has over 6 months of experience.

If you plan to start with Matlab with no prior experience, this book beats most of the other available titles.Since an inside view of the book is not available on Amazon, I will for the benefit of others list out the chapters here.Ch1 begins with the necessary introduction,developing familiarity with the command window,display formats and precedence of operators.It moves on to Ch2 and Ch3 where arrays are introduced and the mathematical operations on them explained.Ch4 is about script files,Ch5 on elementary plotting techniques using in-built functions like plot and fplot.Ch6 introduces functions and Ch7 extends the previous material to formal programming techniques like loops and control structures.Ch8 explains curve fitting and interpolation,Ch9 is about three dimensional plots and special graphics.Ch10, the last one of the book uses Matlab to do symbolic math which cover elementary algebraic equations.The examples contained in the book are from elementary physics and engineering,so if you are looking for more advanced material that has been treated using Matlab,this might be a little less helpful.The numerical techniques again cover simple problems like projectile trajectory,flow of water from a vessel with a small hole punched in its sidewall,RC circuits, viscosity and so on.Relatively advanced topics like Fourier transforms and applications to signal processing are also left out.If you are done with this book or feel that the material isnt of much help, I will suggest that you might try "Numerical Computing with Matlab" by Moler(he is perhaps one of the architects of Matlab).This book(electronic version) is available for free from the mathworks website [...].Overall this book does a good job in explaining details and is also generously sprinkled with figures and screenshots.Please try it if you are first timer to Matlab.

I purchased this title because I am starting a numerical analysis sequence next year using Matlab and I knew only how to plot in 2D and do simple calculations at the command line. After studying from Gilat's text for the past month or so I feel very comfortable using Matlab for all the basics and I am ready to learn how to exploit the full power of the program.

Each chapter gives just enough mathematical background to provide anyone with at least college algebra/trig enough to understand what is going on.
Although this book does not cover any topic too deeply, it does cover the fundamentals of many aspects of Matlab in a way that allows the reader to move fairly quickly through the whole book without getting bogged down in any one area.

In the end you will know the basics about how Matlab operates: how to work with vectors and matrices, how to write simple programs and function files, how to plot and format data, how to fit data to a curve, and how to differentiate and integrate both numerically and symbolically, and a bunch of other great tools for solving problems.

Also, as the other reviewers mentioned, the book makes very good use of graphics to show how input and output should look, as well as what exactly each line means.

I would recommend this text to anyone wanting to learn the basics of Matlab.

Avi's book distills the admissions process in a clear and concise fashion. The book got me on track to think about whom I was and what I had to offer. Avi does a great job of helping you connect the dots among your dreams, achievements, and personality.

Book has given me a good framework to piece the puzzle together from the personal front to the school that will fit my needs. It has empowered me to make it happen.

This is not my first try at knocking on the doors of the top MBA programs. Fortunately I found this wonderful book before I started my campaign this year. The book helped me to identify several mistakes that I've made in my previous application, and of course much more things that I can improve, especially in the essay writing part. Amazingly, the insights to the application process that the author shared in this books matches perfectly with the feedback that I got from the schools that I applied before. On top of that, the book also gives out hands-on instructions to address each aspect with a lot of details. Also it teaches so many smart techniques on how to positioning and marketing yourself. To me, it is an extremely practical guide to help me through the process.

MUST HAVE BOOK. By far the best book on the subject.

Even if you have already purchased Richard Montauk book or any other MBA consulting book, I still advise that you buy and read this book.

If you have not purchased any book yet, I strongly recommend you to start with this book.

If you are targeting top 15 MBA programs, reading this book will be the best thing you could do to improve your chances.

Pros -
1) Very structured approach. It begins with helping you profile yourself.
2) No nonsense material. Very brief, succinct and to the point.
3) It leaves the obvious clutter out. Author does not repeat himself. I think this is the biggest plus of this book. There are many top sellers (no names), which are too thick at the expense of being repetitive.
3) Comprehensive.
4) Refined. Polished.

Cons -
1) Addition of some sample essays would be a very useful.
2) Schools specific research and advise will be useful too. I notice that most of the MBA admissions book in the market lack this type of material.
3) Part time program specific advise.

If you are doing any developing on an Access 2.0 platform and want to create better then the average application, this is the book to own. I own three other Access books and the one I keep returning to is the "Handbook". Affectionately refered to as as the "Bible", my friends and I point out page numbers to the solutions we need when brain storming. It covers even undocumented features that are available with winning detail and the disk included allows you to pop the code in right where you need it. Even novice programmers can pick up this book and get on the road to building killer applications. This book helped me build an imaging system for a client and made me look like God's gift to consulting. Now they buy me lunch every time I see them. It is a must for the application developer. I can't wait for the Access 97 version

If you are looking for an introductory book on Access 2.0, this is not that book. Use the MS manual and the F1 key. A lot. But once you have a basic understanding, and want to build a 'good' app, don't start without this book. If you believe that code can be beautiful and elegant you'll appreciate the book even more. The samples and examples on the accompanying disk will save you much more than the price of the book. And you'll learn a ton in the process.

The best book I have found on MS Access 2.0. I originally bought it because it contains information about how to dynamically resize forms. It it a great reference manual and you can check out some of the code at Sybex website.

I bought the Access 95 version of this book, and later was forced to buy the book to study a particular Access 2 feature. I was struck by how much value the book adds. To me, this is more of an in-depth introduction to Access development than any book outside the "Building Applications" manual. It far surpasses that manual in terms of explanation and samples.

A ~1400 page book chock full of good information and Access 2.0 application development and Access Basic coding. I've used at least 2 full Post-It tape flag boxes in marking the important sections of my book with colored tabs. This book covers everything from SQL syntax to interface development and writing run-time applications. This is truly a must have book for the Access developer
