I wish I had NEVER spent my money on this useless Dictionary! If I knew how to 'write' in Farsi, then it would be great. I need a Dictionary, just like all other language to language dictionaries; the words in English and then the other select language. Even if the alphabet is different, it should have it written 'phoentically' to say the least!

Good for advanced, not beginners

This is a very thorough dictionary in terms of scope.

The English words include pronuciation guides while the Persian words do not.

The print is so small that some of the letters blur and are difficult to distinguish. A couple have actually been rubbed in the production process so I can't figure them out without the help of a native speaker.

It is necessary to read the included key/explanations in the beginning in order to follow the organization.

Conjugation is not (at least in my observation) thoroughly included/covered.

If it's a Persian dictionary, of course the Persian words are going to be in Persian script. It's the same with the dictionaries of any other language, duh. Please no more entries by people who have been studying Persian for two days ... learn the script, at most it will take you a couple of hours. There are generally about three factors that comprise a good Persian dictionary: it includes some form of phonetic representation of the word, verbs need to be shown with their present tense roots, and examples of usage (with an emphasis on the use of prepositions and also commonly found idioms). This particular dictionary doesn't seem to give you any of these three. If you want a good dictionary stick to the 40-dollar Aryanpur volume. It makes all of the competitors look like crap.

If you are just beginning to learn the Persian language this book is not for you. The book is written in the Persian language without the English letter translation. The Persian print is also very hard to read and decipher. It also lacks a Persian alphebet for the user. If you know Persian and can read Persian, then this book would be great for you.

Fist of all for 75$ I would have expected the catalogue to be in color not only the cover and the back...
Secondly for Ancient coins such as Greek, Roman & Byzantine, It would have helped if an approximate weight for each coin was included...

No color pictures

Fist I would say for 75.00 , I would expect color when it comes to showing gold coins in a hard bound edition. The only color is on the paper cover. The book lacks depth in the largest market for collectors, U.S.A. . Not impressive !

A must have book for world coin collectors

who specialize in gold coins minted prior to 1600. It would have been much better if the photos would have been in color. In todays new coin business and hobby it's essential to communicate not only the basic design of a coin but also it's unique look and that means color and high quality digital pictures. We are learing in the trade that these color photos are an essential part of the business, and students and collectors of coins want research material that also accurately portrays coins as well. Still a necessary book for the collector as well as advanced Numismatic library, let's hope we see a new release that we can all be happy with.

Buy another book.

Great Reference Book to Browse Through for Casual Readers!

This review is for; Standard Catalog Of Schwinn Bicycles 1895-2004

As pointed out by the other reviewers this is hardly an accurate "catalog" with the technical details that we usually associate with precise catalogs. Instead, this 160-page book is just a short pictorial and text reference for casual interest. As others pointed out this book does not have a complete catalog of all the Schwinn bikes produced (which would mean a much bigger book!), but just a random assortment of Schwinn bikes produce from 1895 to the present. Yes, unfortunately those but-ugly Schwinn choppers called "Stingray" (Stingray Imposters!) from a couple of years ago are also included. As a Schwinn enthusiast myself who proudly owns four Schwinn bikes that I refuse to let go of and I enjoyed the fact that my 1998 Schwinn Paramount was in the book.

Don't expect detailed information for each bike such as specifications and frame measurements that you may have seen from actual Schwinn catalogs. The book only has a few photographs of the whole bike and a few close-ups of the bike and accessories. In terms of text, details of each bike described is limited to one paragraph at the most! If you are a Stingray or Krate enthusiast over 55 pages are dedicated to the Stingray & Krate (mostly original and a few pages of the later reproductions). I'm just a mild Schwinn enthusiast, so I was surprised to see some products that I never saw before such as the Stingray tandem bike called the "Mini Twin" (which was produced for only one year!) and the moto-cross bike called the "Hornet". The book shows all the odd yet unique accessories such as the Stingray "ram-horn" handle bars, windshield and baseball bat carrier. Some photographs of the Excelsior motorcycle and other motorcycles designed by Ignaz Schwinn (the 1895 founder) are included in the book. Other pictures included are some of the vintage Schwinn ads produced throughout the years.

As far as the text, the book briefly explains the history of Schwinn, but most of the text is dedicated to explaining the various lines of Schwinn. I highly recommend the book "No Hands" by Judith Crown & Glenn Coleman if you want to get a better historical perspective on the history of Schwinn.

My only mild complaint about the book is that since the 160 pages of roughly 8.5" X 11" pages (office size) are paper bound, the large center-fold pictures are somewhat difficult to see because the middle of the photo is "mashed" very tightly where separate pages are bound together. The "Schwinn Bicycle" book by Pridemore & Hurd was a slightly better book in terms of presentation because the pages were slightly larger 10.5"X 10.5" in a hardcover bound book. I think this "catalog" book would have been slightly better if the pages were wider.

Despite the fact that this book isn't really a detailed "catalog" for the Schwinn die-hards, I still thinks it's still a pleasure for people with some casual interest to browse through and look at those wonderful Schwinn bikes that you have or use to have or wished you have!

Boo-hiss :(

This book was disappointing. It's title lead me to believe that it would be an extensive and thorough compilation of most, if not all of the bikes Schwinn produced; not so!

I own a 1970 Schwinn Twinn Tandem bike, and was hoping I would read and see information on tandems. They picture one tandem, and have very little information about it. They also fail to depict several other models. If you look at an orignal Schwinn catalog, you'll find that they built dozens of models each year! Do a google search and you'll find it.

One of Schwinn's more popular models was the "Typhoon", and I don't even see a mention of it! What a crock!

I have a Standard Catalog of Corvette, and it's is much more thorough than this one for the bike.

The book is well written for the casual interest, yet it does not detail the financial woes that Schwinn had prior to its demise. The photos are good, not enough information that a "Catalog" should have. I was hoping for model names and production fiqures year by year, but such was not contained. I'm sure there are better histories out there.

Don't waste your money - There are better books

After reviewing this book I was very disappointed. The title should have been "just another picture book of a few guys bikes". The title "standard catalog" is very deceiving. The content does not even scratch the surface of the vast array of of bicycles built by Schwinn down thru the years. There are no charts of models built, no production numbers, no serial numbers, really nothing in the way of valuable information to the collector. Nothing more than pictures of a select few bicycles and some cheesy history thrown in for copy. Even my untrained eye spotted several inaccuracies in the pictures of the restored bicycles shown.
I will say that the photography is quite good and the paper quality is great. My "new" copy arrived with the binding separating and some pages coming out. This would make an excellant book to keep next to the commode in case of emergency!!!
Perhaps the next time the author decides to tackle such an undertaking, some amount of research would be in order instead of relying on the Schwinn name to sell a book. I'm not into burning books but this on comes close.

This is a nice try but the prices are way off the mark. They are for the most part way too low and not in touch with reality. The book provides a good basic overview of the Scripophily hobby, but the reader should totally disregard the prices. A search of Scripophily websites on the Internet will give someone a much more realistic view of pricing and availability. I have heard a lot of complaints about this book from dealers and collectors alike.

OK for beginners and online shoppers. Others should avoid.

This book provides a decent overview of inexpensive stocks and bonds from around the world. About 60%-70% of the items listed are from the United States. A large number of photos are provided and the type is very large. The authors clearly focused on the low end of the hobby. That's not bad, just not very helpful for mid level or high-end collectors. The quality of the photos is mediocre at best. They are black and white except for the covers and an eight-page insert. Even in this section, common material dominates, with only 9 of the 61 color photos shown being valued at more than ten dollars. Of those, only two are valued more than one hundred dollars. Many of the photos are fuzzy, taken at angles, or trimmed, giving the appearance that they've been lifted from online auctions. The values given seemed way off in my opinion. The authors note that the values were generally derived by reviewing online auctions and not by reviewing dealer price lists. I have to wonder if this approach makes sense since it doesn't consider shipping charges and the discount the buyers apply for the additional risk of buying an item in an online auction. Comparing my collection with the listed items left me with a feeling of incompleteness. Less than 10% of my collection was listed. In general, the book may provide a good overview of material available to the novice collector but advanced collectors should avoid it.

This book contains many stocks and bonds that no one would collect. I sold many of these to the author for $1.00. There are many good references out there. Try George LaBarre's Books. They're out of Print but can be found on here and Ebay. The Author should stick with his other subject matter we writes about and Shame on Krause Publishers. They should have used a established dealer or the IBSS.

It is a good start

This is the most complete catalog of scripophily items I have found. (It is the only one I have been able to locate.) The book is organized well, and is fairly complete. I find at least two thirds of the issues I have been looking for in it. As for the listed pricing, the prices seem to be fair compared with what I have encounterd in the market. There are plenty of photographs, though most are blabk and white.

The book would be improved if they added details on how to adjust pricing for the condition of the document. In addition, if they added more general information on the field it would be helpful. Of course for later additions, I hope that they will add more items to it.

In general though, it is a good book.

the content you want, nice paper, poor binding
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-09
I'm not going to review the content; if you know what this is (the formal standard for the C++ programming language) you know that standards are written in dense, formal language, but that at times, no other source of information about the language will do; this is the primary source. If you claim to be an expert on C++ and write a lot of code, eventually you will probably have to look something up in the standard.

But after looking at a copy close up, I no longer want to purchase it. Why?

While the paper is acid-free and reasonably thick, the binding is one of the poorest I've ever seen in a hardback book.

I'm not an expert on book-binding, but most of the hardcover books in my professional library (such as Refactoring, Design Patterns, The C++ Programming Language Special Edition, and various other books from Addison-Wesley and other vendors) have a sturdy strip of cloth embedded in the binding and are strongly glued in place.

This book, by comparison, had a thin cover, no cloth in the binding, and flimsy gluing; just flipping through some pages, I was afraid the pages were going to start falling out. A second copy had the same flimsy binding.

For $65.00 we deserve better. Even a solid paperback at this price would have been much more appealing. Steele's Common Lisp: the Language, 2nd edition is a thousand-page paperback, and much, much sturdier. Note to Wiley: just sell a fat paper binding for $50 and leave it at that, charge a few dollars more if you must and give us a book that will last a few years. Don't try to con us with an expensive hardcover which is in reality flimsier than any other programming book on my shelves!

Another reason to avoid this

I agree with the earlier reviewer and I'll add another reason: For $18.00 you can buy an electronic version of the Standard from ANSI as a PDF file. Same content (except the TR which I think is available separately) and no issues about binding. It won't feel like a book but somehow I doubt that Programming Language Standards are read at bedtime with a cup of cocoa at hand...

There are still some errors and omissions in this edition and in many cases the history doesn't go back to 1870. The values quoted are also different for the same gun listed for different countries. The values are a couple of years old in some cases. The information on automatic weapons appears to be good. I hope this will become as good as his Standard Catalog of Firearms.

This book has cards and that's about it. The cards in this book are way overpriced. For example I have a Barry Sanders/Jerry Rice card. In the book it goes for one hundred dollars. In Beckett it goes for twenty five bucks. I have a Chad Pennington card. In the book it goes for one hundred dollars. In Beckett it goes for a measly twenty dollars. I can give many more reasons not to buy this book but I am limited to only a thousand words. Buyers Beware... DO NOT BUY!!! Buy Beckett!

Review Date: 2001-03-21
Eventhough the introduction chapter of the book looks very promising, because it refers to some of the construction industry difficults/needs in achivieng consistent quality and customer satisfaction; when you read the contents there is no practical examples of "how to do it/implement it" in this sector. In general, it is another good interpretation of the ISO 9000 standars, it explains what do the requirements means and the basic implementation steps, but if you already know the standars and you are looking for help in the implementation process at a CONSTRUCTION company...this is too basic and it would hardly help to "land" the standar at your company. Also, for someone who is not familiar with the ISO 9000 group of standars, the book is difficult to follow, because it mix different standars requirements (ISO 9004-1,ISO 9004-2) instead of focusing in the basic requirements (then it would be ISO 9001) you need to implement a quality assurance system and then the other requirements you would need (i.e. ISO 9004) to improve your quality assurance system.

If you have no plan at all, this will help in making sure all 20 elements are covered. The word documents that are included with the book are skeletonized with generic verbiage. This is a good first step but that is exactly what it is - a FIRST STEP. It helps you develop a generic manual. Gaining a full understanding of the ISO 9000 way will require considerably more reading.
