I checked out the 12th edition of this book from the library and found it to be an excellent resource. Very informative covering detailed aspects of many areas of EE design. Lots of figures, tables and pictues showing you what equipment and systems look like if you've never seen them before. The 14th edition is very similiar, only larger pages and updated figures and content. This is an excellent resource.

An illustrated Encyclopedia of Time
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-29
This beautifully designed and printed book was actually the catalogue of the exhibition "The Story of Time" which was hosted by the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. Already from the introductions of the directors of these institutions, as well as a Preface Essay entitled "Times" by Umberto Eco, the reader will be aware of the high standard of this publication. It is an attempt to depict the human experience with time in all its forms.

The catalogue is divided into five main sections: 1.) "The Creation of Time": A brief survey of early concepts of time in different cultures, for example, Biblical, Hindu, Native American, and Maori. 2.) "The Measurement of Time": The different modes of measuring time beginning with early calendars in different cultures, progressing to early european mechanical clocks, and culminating with chronometers and radio controlled clocks. 3.) "The Depiction of Time": In Painting, Sculpture, Calligraphy and Allegory. From Breughel to Chinese Sculpture this chapter shows the obsession of depicting time in art and in symbolizing it. 4.) "The Experience of Time": Here other ways of experiencing time are discussed, in music, historical time, human time and time in culture. 5.) "The End of Time": A brief chapter in which different conceptions are shown how it would be possible for time to end (and when) and different historical and contemporary depictions are shown.

Sections 2.) and 3.) are by far the largest, which is obvious from their subject matter, and the fact that this is an exhibition catalogue. Interspersed in all five sections are interesting essays on different aspects of time and its influence and pre-occupation on human beings, by well known scholars such as E.H. Gombrich. These range from "Inuit Time" to "Time in the History of Medecine". Most fascinating are the hundreds of excellent illustrations, mostly of time keeping devices and time in art representing many cultures and time periods. The book is handsomely bound, well printed and presented and the illustrations are clear. This book is encyclopedic in its scope and is fascinating to read. It is reasonably priced and highly recommended.

Fascinating content and art, a big overwhelming!

I wish I had more time to read and read this book! It is huge, and contains a giant mish-mash of material---many, many pieces of artwork with a connection to time, many essays about the role of time in various cultures, lots of photos of timepieces through the ages---even all sorts of words from many languages for days of the weeks and months, running along the page bottoms! I read the book not being aware it was really a catalog for an exhibition, and knowing that now, it makes more sense, as I did start to wonder when reading it why there was such a huge emphasis on physical objects representing or measuring time. Time itself is such an abstract concept that it seemed odd to represent it so visually, but it's very interesting, and some of the artwork was amazing. I most loved looking at a series of pictures of one couple in front of their Christmas tree taken over 45 years---seeing how they aged was really compelling. I do think I would have liked a little more of an organized feel to this book. It seemed like I was walking randomly around a museum---not a bad feeling, but a little overwhelming! I'd also have liked a little more about the scientific side of time rather than just the cultural, as the title implies this is a comprehensize work. However, certainly a fascinating work and one I would love to just look over for days and days!

Wow, this is an amazing book. It covers precision temperature measurement in an authoritative way, and provides background material like measurement science and statistics. This includes by far the best discussion of thermocouples of the many I have read, and I will never feel blissful again when using them. The discussion on platinum resistance thermometry is thorough and most insightful, including excellent coverage of electrical resistance measurement. I am going through the book now and section after section is far exceeding my expectations.

The book also talks about traceability and other tactical issues relating to calibration, accreditation, and so forth. I am not much interested in these things, and can say there is not so much here as to put me off.

The authors (D. R. White [...] speak from a New Zealand perspective, but this rarely seems noticeable, even though things like standards organizations are somewhat different around the world.

This is not a quick intro to every possible way of measureing temperature. It's a deep and authoritative intro to several leading accurate ways.

This book not only covers temperature trace ability but also covers subjects like how a temperature sensor's construction will affect the long-term stability of measurements. However information about how the associated measurement equipment is constructed and how it affects the long-term temperature measurement stability is not thoroughly discussed.

Some parts of the trace ability aspect are limited, for example, how error tolerance build up affects the finial specs, which can be claimed.

Good introductory book, easy to read.

This belongs in any high flying accounts collection of reference. You may think that this book is long winded, not concise and bascially for hardcore accounting academics but you'd be suprised how well written and easy to follow it is.

It comes from a very reputable editor and basically contains all the useful parts of other books in one. If you where to buy the useful books in this field it would cost alot more than this book so it is worth it but only buy it if you feel it can help you make more money.

P.S- Its a good idea to borrow a copy first before you buy because if you don't feel comfortable with it its a waste of money. If you do feel comfortable with it you will soon realise its invaluble.

For accounting professionals, bankers, and investment research analysts, this book provides indepth analysis of the local accounting guidelines throughout the world. International Corporate Finance Houses should not be without one. The book, published in conjuntion with KPMG, covers Europe, the US and Canada, and a number of the major countries in Asia, including Japan, Taiwan and India. The two volume text includes a well organized matrix of major accounting issues, and their treatment under local GAAP. I found this book to be a great resource for Administrators who need to write Teacher Evaluations. This resource would also be extremely helpful for Graduate Students who are taking Administration courses. The comments are appropriate. The "pats on the back" are explicit with details. This book is most helpful when comments for improvement need to be written. The negative scenerios come with a bank of suggestions for improvement. The CD made my life easier. I am sure that you will keep this book within arm's reach as I have done.

This hefty volume provides all the necessary information that a collector needs: prices of four grades, metal composition and weight, coin picture, mintage, dates, mint and a KM number of every coin. Additional useful appendices are also included, which can faciliatete the task of identifying cryptic coins (using this book, I've identified three previously unidentifiable coins!) My only criticism is that the coins appear in black and white. A color verion might augment the price, but at least in some parts, this is a must -- For example, when the authors explain how to grade coins, one can hardly see the difference between Unc and AU, or XF and VF. I also found one coin missing from the Israeli catalog, but other than that this is an excellent collector's reference.

Excerpt from THE HOBBY HORSE NEWS REVIEW, Aug/Sept. 2000
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-26
Charlton Press, a noted publishor of collector's guides, uses collector-authors for its guides as Charlton feels this provides important insights needed in a collector's guide. From what I've seen, book height and format are consistent between guides. Each book starts with a blurb about the collectible, such as information on the company or the modeling artists. Item listings come next. These include photo (if available), the item name, number, designer, height, color, issue date, and price. Prices are listed in three currencies: U.S. Dollars, Canadian Dollars, and U.K. pounds. An index is located at the back of the book. Also, included are ads from companies, clubs, and magazines that specialize in the particular collectible.

An important aspect of any collector's value guide is the basis of the valuations. Charlton uses a method based on the actual going price in each quoted region. They gain this data by contacting dealers in the various countries and getting the actual prices the applicable collectibles are going for in that area. This method eliminates the fluctuations of currency exchange rates that would occur if the item was listed, say in U.S. dollars, and than an exchange rate applied to calculate the prices for Canada and the U.K. Now we can move on to specifics.

I already had The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Beswick Animals, first edition, so my main concern was how did the millennium edition compare to the first edition. After all, you can invest in a new collector's guide or use that money for a new collectible, so the guide just better be worth the replacement cost. Five years lie between the first edition (1994) and the millennium or fourth edition (1999). So right, there you have five years of change. (You also have two editions I haven't seen, but I can't tell you about them.) The first edition only had four pages of color photos and all were of the horses. The millennium edition now has sixteen pages of color photos: eight pages dedicated to cats and cows, four pages display horses, and four pages miscellaneous other items. That sounds like the same amount of horse models pictured, but it isn't. The millennium edition presents horse groupings; the first edition only presented a single horse/photo. The photos are different, which brings up the question of whether to let the old edition go or keep it for the color photos.

The introduction is greatly expanded as well. It now has club information, dealer/show listings, and a discussion on how internet pricing may eliminate regional pricing by creating a new universal price. (Good discussion by the way. I recommended it to anyone concerned with values theory.)

The millennium edition maintains the high quality of the first edition, so if you are looking for a replacement, you won't be disappointed.

This book presents a catalogue of the animal figures produced by the famous Beswick ceramic factory in Britain prior to being taken over by Royal Doulton. Fully illustrated, it also includes information about some of the artists who designed these attractive models, as well as details about the figures themselves, the dates when they were produced, and a price guide for each piece. A must for the serious collector or antique dealer, and a nice addition to your bookshelf for any animal lover.

Caithness Paperweights

At last! The Standard Reference Book for Caithness Paperweights. This is the book for every Caithness paperweight collector.

This catalog (524 pages) covers Caithness Glass Paperweights in Chronological order, from the Planets set issued in 1969 to the Millennium Collection released in 1999. Paperweights produced for the Caithness Glass Paperweight Collectors Society and those commissioned by businesses and museums are also included. You are bound to see some that you never knew existed.

Each listing, accompanied by an illustration, provides the names of the paperweight, designer, date of issue, edition size, status, original and current values in US and Canadian dollars, and UK pounds. Prices are bound to change, especially with Internet access to dealers, collectors and sales.

Information about the designers, suggestions on building a collection and information sources concerning Caithness Glass paperweights (and paperweights in general) is included.

A listing of Collectors Clubs and Chapters around the world is in the front. As are factory shops, visitor centers and Internet customer enquiry addresses. Also included are Auction Houses, Antique Fairs and Collectible Shows.

The most comprehensive resource guide to Caithness Paperweights. If you collect Caithness glass you need this book! My understanding is that if enough of us buy this book, the next edition will have more color pictures. As it is, most are in black and white. Still, the image quality is enough to stir the juices of any collector.

Useful, but some inaccuracies

I find this reference to be very useful, particularly on eBay where many sellers start their bidding above retail price (and try to make it seem like a bargain). It's generally on the mark, though I have found several small inaccuracies (like pieces I own that are not in the book), and their "current valuation" is out of line with real pricing. The publisher has been pretty good about responding to my queries about errors I've found, though we'll have to see the 2nd edition to see if they fix them.

I wish it were in color, but in the interest of making the book affordable, it has only a few color plates.
