This is an invaluable reference. I've been searching for weeks for materials related to noise control in a residential setting. I've found only one "expert" in the yellow pages and he charges hundreds for his advice. This book provides all of the information he provided and more. Although, the editing isn't great and there are typos and other errors, the content is first-rate. For once, this book was exactly what I expected.

Fine introductory overview and defense
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-29
The fact that this brief and accessible but highly intelligent survey and defense of American Popular Song comes from an unlikely source (most of us think of Max Morath as a ragtime performer and spokesperson) probably increases its value. Morath lays it on line--American popular standards constitute a body of classic, timeless musical literature composed between 1920 and 1960, songs that outshine anything that has been written since or will be in the foreseeable future.

The author defends his position persuasively, drawing a distinction between those performers who interpreted a shared musical literature vs. today's performers who compose and produce their own material. He also explains how the theatrical contexts of songs from the so-called "Golden Era" led to material of uncommon craft, lyricism, depth and dramatic urgency. Finally, the author makes it clear that the longevity of the songs owes as much to the performers as to the composers or original contexts. From Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald to Duke Ellington and Miles Davis, Morath touches on virtually all the bases essential to understanding the art of American Popular Song and the lasting appeal of the "standards."

Morath's book is a "fast read" and not especially useful as a reference work for anyone who knows the field. The most informative, fascinating, and revealing account about American popular songs and their composers is still Gerald Mast's "Can't Help Singin'," a largely unheralded work that easily outpaces the field.

Musical Curiosity Satisfied!

There is no one better qualified to write about this tuneful subject than Max Morath, whose musical interests obviously range far beyond the ragtime that made him famous. The subject matter is the "Standard" songs that have defied the laws of popular music gravity. Instead of fading from view in a few weeks, these songs have remained in the public mind long after other tunes have been forgotten. Mr. Morath describes the songs, the composers, and the historical setting surrounding the music that has impacted the lives and loves of more than one generation, an influence that lives on yet today. A thorough treatment of a delightful topic.

Indispensible Guide

How many times have you heard a dealer say, "shine it up and it'll be BU?" If you're like me, you've seen the questionable grading standards of some dealers. Having a guide like this is absolutely essential if you're going to be spending money on coins. Being able to grade coins well is as essential to the hobby as buying the coin.

This guide has more information that simply what to look for in grading coinage. It has information on the history of the hobby, how to detect cleaning and other alterations, what the key areas are to look for in coins, and some other useful articles.

Grading coins is both art and science and you'll find even experts grading the same coin differently. But with a book like this you can have a basis of comparison. The only thing I wish the book had is more color photography of each grade/coin. But that's what the book Photograde is for...

This book is one of the finest if not the very best tool avaliable today, not only to collectors but dealers as well. I strognly reccomed the purcahse and use of this book. Keeping in mind that you must pay close attention to the details for accurate grading.

It's official so you must have it, obviously, but for what?

This book contains the official grading standards of the ANA so obviously it is a must own for people who wish to grade within the standards of the ANA. I mean, that is why I purchased the thing but you know what?, I found that I didn't really need it...at least not this edition of it. This is because the ANA is the, ahem, gold standard when it comes to grading coins so practically any current book that you buy concerning the grading of coins will use this information as the baseline. Thus, you can buy books on the hobby that may focus on a topic more exciting to one and which are interesting reads as well, but which nevertheless will refer to the standards elucidated here as the starting point of any discussion of coin grade. What I am saying is that the information contained here is critical to establishing a coin grade so you probably already know what you need to know about these standards from other coins books you have read which purport to help you to establish grade bcause they use this book as a jumping off point. So, use this book as a reference manual, especially if you want to become a professional grader and all the while hope that the ANA comes out with an easier to read and more useful edition soon. Either that or read the other books out there by well-respected coin experts who use these standards and help you "how to use" the standards laid down in this book. The reason that I'd rely upon experts who write books on the hobby for such guidance is that they understand what makes one coin more desirable than another even though each ostensibly meet the objective standards contained in this book, and they tell you how they know and try to instruct you how to do the same. The best way that I can demonstrate what I am talking about is that I bought a coin on ebay that was slabbed by NGC to be a 1938 D/S buffalo nickel. I returned the coin to seller because the '8' in '1938' had been sheared off at the mint. Yet, this coin was in MS-65 condition according to the standards laid down in this book. Get my point?

Residential and Light Commercial Construction Standards is a great book when trying to avoid disputes about various construction standards. It covers everything from asphalt paving; concrete; masonry; finish capentry; cabinetry; and many more.

So much information, I don't know where to start.

I think this is an excellent book for, first, students and neophytes to learn some standard detailing and systems, and second, novice construction administrators and contractors needing help with some standard practices they might not have seen or know the whole ins and outs of. I will admit that it is not at a beginner level, and you do need some familiarity with construction to understand all of its articles, but the list of contributing editors is a who's who of construction standards, most of them being some sort of expert, whether they serve on buiding code commitees or are esteemed lecturers and each with multiple decades of experience.

The book is divided almost into the cooresponding CSI divisions it deals with. Each section starts out with a great blurb (titled "Common Defect Allegations") about what is to be expected when dealing with particular system. These are especially helpful to generalize a decision about masonry walls vs. concrete, and so on. What really excited me about this book was that in each building system article, there are the cooresponding UBC entries included with the hard to understand ones diagramed out (Like typical distance requirements for light fixtures around a shower or where you need a GFCI plug in your bathroom)

This is a necessary reference for construction and design professionals already in the field. More experienced professionals might find it more useful as a quick reference so they don't have to remember all the code issues and standards for a particular building system. This IS light commercial and residential construction, this book is missing all the steel erection, shoring, heavy concrete, etc. systems. I have found those books, though.

This is the 7th edition of the CBE Manual, now renamed as CSE. I'm a science proofreader and typesetter and I must say I'm somewhat disappointed. In only a couple of hours browsing the book I've found a lot of mistakes in the math notation. Examples: 5.2.1.3, 2), missed + after dots; 13.3.1, the last integral has the pi misplaced (a serious problem, as the example is intended to show how indexes are placed); Table 12.11, f(x,y) should be italics, not upright; 12.3.2.1, |z> for the state of a system is wrong, as the character used is 'greater than' an not an angle bracket (which is not mentioned at all); according to 12.2.1.1, 3) space in units (eg, V s) is discouraged and a centered dot is preferred (V·s), but except in this chapter the book uses the space (rightly), etc. The Chicago Manual is much better in math. Now I wonder if the rest of the book has similar mistakes and the information is reliable. Selection of topics is also questionable. Still a valuable reference, but it should be used warily.

Scholarly Documentation

Review Date: 2008-06-08
Everyone who is a scholar or academician must know how to handle various formats of documentation styles. CSE represents one of these, specifically in the field of the natural and physical sciences. Another one is APA published by the American Psychological Association, which is mainly utilized in the social sciences. Finally, in the humanities, especially language, literature and folklore, fine arts, etc., a scholar needs to use the MLA, Moderna Language Association style. By the way, here at Amazon you can get the latest edition of the MLA, 3rd ed., just published in May, 2008. Good luck in your scholarship ///Dr. Serafin Roldan

If you enjoy reading about Cadillacs, this is a great book. It is filled with interesting items and even has a section called - Historical (Nice). It features all the specs on every Caddy ever made: prices, engines, prod. nums., options, yearly changes, body styles, etc. In addition, it has some nice stories about significant cars: LaSalle, 76 Eldo conv., 72 Cpe Dev, 54 Eldo, 59 Cad, etc. It really does provide hours of entertainment. One final thing. It also has a couple reproductions of some nice advertisements from the earlier years and you cannot beat the price.

Do you want to know how many horsepower the Cadillac V-16 had? Do you want to see the list of features on the 1957 Fleetwood Brougham? How about the V-8-6-4 engine? The answers to all these questions and more can be found in the book, which is a must have for all Cadillac fans. However, they should produce a second edition if they want to include The Northstar System, which brought me to enjoy Cadillacs.

Extremely comprehensive overview of Cadillacs & LaSalles

Review Date: 1998-07-09
This book is invaluable for anyone who is interested in a complete overview of Cadillacs and LaSalles. The book includes pictures, articles, and comprehensive data on all models, as well as a "ballpark" pricing guide for the collector. The book is well organized and the data is accurate as far as I know. Want to know if that 1963 convertible you saw in the paper will fit in your garage? What size engine did a 1958 Eldorado Biarritz have? What options were available in 1966? This book will tell you that and much more. The book does not have any repair information nor is it a resource for restorers. There is an explanation of a rating system for old cars based on appearance and wear and tear, but this is only for use with the "ballpark" pricing guide. Rather, it is an encyclopedia of facts and data. I would strongly recommend this book as a useful reference tool for anyone who is collects, is considering buying or selling, or is simply interested in Cadillacs and LaSalles.

This book is pretty informative. It goes indepth into the history of individual firearms as well as giving a price range per respective condition. Only thing they don't tell you is that many standard military weapons are not included in this edition.

Inorder to evaluate those you have to purchase the Standard Catalog of Military Firearms.

If you aren't so much interested in Military firearms then this is the book for you.

If there is an interest in all manner of Winchester products, "Standard Catalog of Winchester" is an okay black and white price catalog of all sorts of items sold under the Winchester name. Even if you are not a Winchester collector, the contents are interesting to thumb through.

The firearms section is approximately 120 pages, which are virtually the same Winchester pages that appear in other Krause Publications such as "The Standard Catalog of Firearms" and "Fladerman's...", only expanded though the use of larger versions of the same pictures and illustrations. I only mention this duplication of content because, if you already have any of these other Krause publications, this book does not offer expanded or new information relating to firearms.
