This was actually the first Daniel Steele book I ever read. It was wonderful the story so well developed and the characters so full of life. In fact I have now read this book at least 3 times maybe even 4, truly a classic. Everyone should have this on their shelf to read when you get tired of just seeing words on a page that take you nowhere.

Audry is SUCH a great character! Her love of adventure and for her man, but her loyalty to her family is what really pulled the story together. Very enjoyable book!

I have read many of Danielle Steel's books. This has to be one of her best. It is about a young woman named Audrey who has been caretaker to her grandfather and younger sister. Then, she has this need to do some traveling, and see the world. She does so, first going to New York City (she lived in San Francisco). She meets two people named James and Violet, and she becomes a travel companion for the two. In England, she meets Charles, whom becomes her one true love, and they travel the world together, and no matter what threatens to break them up, they never give up on each other.

This is not as formulaic as many of Danielle Steel novels, but it is still wonderful and one of her best.

I have been reading Danielle Steel for over 15 years and own all her books and this is one of my favourites - one I can read over and over again and still enjoy the story.
I was transported back to the 1930's and admired the bravery of Audrey travelling to China when it was probably a dangerous (and not "proper") for a young single woman to do so. This one made me laugh, cry and wish that all would go well for Audrey.
If you are a Danielle Steel fan you will love this one. Her earlier novels (like this one) are so much better than her later books. If you are new to Danielle Steel - this one is highly recommended. Enjoy!

I like the foundation pieced blocks in this book. I like the fact that it has a cd with the book. I like the fact that you can resize the blocks for printing. I do not like the fact that Ms. Doak did not name the blocks in the book, or on the cd. Even so, it was a good purchase.

I own several paper-piecing books, some by Carol Doak. All of hers have been wonderful. This one stood out to me because of the smaller size blocks (3" to 4") and the CD which includes copies of the patterns. The size was important to me because I can now include beautiful paper-pieced blocks or portions of blocks in my borders easily. Many other books include patterns for larger blocks & you must reduce pattern, etc. So for those of us who dislike recalculating pattern sizes and accompanied set-in pieces, this makes it a breeze. Carol once again gets an A+.

I looked at many writing books for my child. A school teacher recommended this one to me. After we used it as the primary writing guide, my child's writing took off. It's so effective that his writing has jumped from average to outstanding in his class. Now the book is one of our two MUST-DOs every week (the other is Beestar online ELA and vocabulary exercises, a wonderful web site www.beestar.org). Writing is a life-long skill. We will continue use this guide to improve writing for a long time.

Valuable Structure for Assessing Writing
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-09
English teachers have it tough -- no matter how hard they try, they cannot avoid a degree of subjectivity when it comes to grading papers. This book, 6+1 TRAITS OF WRITING, will not make the process a totally objective one, but it will provide a definite structure that will be invaluable to both new and experienced teachers alike. In workmanlike fashion, Ruth Culham devotes chapters to the traits (ideas, word choice, sentence fluency, voice, organization, and conventions) PLUS one (presentation) with a series of indicators for teachers to assess each one.

It's a great primer in the technique, and the chapters all follow a similar pattern with definitions of the traits, a list of reasons on why students struggle with that trait, steps on how to assess the trait, and sample papers to practice assessing using the 6 + 1 method. Each sample paper is followed by the scores the author gave it, along with their reasoning. Finally, the chapters are nicely rounded out with a series of practical ideas on how you can TEACH each trait. Teachers trying to get a handle on grading papers will appreciate the practicality and the structure.

The caveats I have with the book are minor. First, the sample papers range from Grades 3 to 9, and it's often difficult to assess sample papers because elementary teachers may not know how far along a secondary student should be and secondary teachers may have no clue about what's expected from third-grade writers. The wide range in ages, in other words, creates a bit of extra confusion for teachers who are well-versed in their own age-group of students. Also, the extra batch of "practice papers" to assess at the back of the book are directly followed by the author's scores, meaning the papers and their scores often share the same page. It would have been more helpful to separate them so as to avoid accidentally seeing a score while trying to finish the paper.

Culham's book is a great start, but a lot more practice assessing will probably be necessary to successfully implement the program. Also, I found that I had many questions about judgment calls while assessing some of the indicators and, in a workshop type setting, could have used further explanation from an experienced hand. Alas, the book cannot provide anything like that, but still, it's a start -- and a good one. Recommended.

I originally had to buy this book for a graduate level pedagogy course. I ended up using this book constantly to help teach 4th graders how to write. As a classroom teacher and workshop leader, I have found this book very useful. It includes sample student papers that can be used by teachers and students to hone their assessment skills. The ideas for teaching each of the traits are concrete ones that students enjoy. When I've read forty papers and have run out of new responses to give my students, there are even lists of responses for me to use. I recommend this book to both new and experienced teachers of writing.

My Personal Esoteric/Spiritual Bible

I have been reading the Aquarian Gospel of Jesus Christ for many years now, and use it my personal spiritual Bible. What is written rings true to me and I refer to it whenever i am seeking 'religious' information about such topics as Faith, Trust, Love or Power, for example.

I believe it was channeled by Levi, the transcriber, as he is called by his children, and was only published them after his death.

The Introduction of the book is worth reading. Here is the first paragraph: "The full title of this book is The Aquarian Age Gospel of Jesus, the Christ of the Piscean Age, and the critical reader is apt to ask a number of pertinent questions concerning it. Among the many anticipated questions these are perhaps the most important: What is an Age? What is the Piscean Age? What is the Aquarian Age? What is meant by the Christ as the word is used in this book? What relationship existed between Jesus of Nazareth and the Christ? Who is Levi, the transcriber of this book? What are the Akashic Records?" These are answered in the Introduction.

This is a metaphysical, or esoteric Bible for those interested in studying what is now called the Ancient Wisdom. As a spiritual teacher, I strongly recommend it.

I also particularly love this book for its Subject Index.

The Complete Story of the Life of Jesus

The Aquarian Gospel is based on the author's ability to "read" the vibrational imprints --akashic records -- of events surrounding Jesus' life, as well as His life and teachings themselves, from the birth of His mother, Mary, to the words of Peter spoken on the day of Pentecost. Many are skeptical of such a work, based as it is on inner revelations of the vibrational records in the realms of spirit, but the words of Jesus and the events recorded by Levi have never been successfully disproven, and are consistent with much that has been brought to light about Jesus and his teachings in recent decades.
For example, the lost gospel of Thomas, discovered in 1945 in Egypt, contains roughly 150 of his sayings, which fit in with his teachings in the Aquarian Gospel, as do his comprehensive discourses on a wide variety of subjects in Glenda Green's book, Love Without End, and in Mary Ann Johnston's book, Messages from Jesus -- A Dialogue of Love. In the latter work, published in 2004, the author asks questions of Jesus, whom she has been able to see and talk with since childhood, and his answers, filled with the power of love, expand your awareness and draw you closer to God. In the other book, Glenda Green was enabled to see and converse with Jesus by means of a beam of energy projected to the point between her eyebrows. This took place in November 1991. If you read either of these two books, you are struck with the sincerity of the authors and the feeling that what Jesus is saying is truth. As for the Aquarian Gospel and the Gospel of Thomas, the narrative in the former and Jesus' words in both are beautiful, inspiring, and, in my opinion, as worthy of acceptance as the four canonical gospels. I have read and studied each of the books mentioned in this review and recommend them to all who seek a more complete understanding of Jesus' teachings.

The ideal way to explore the Eastern influence on the spirituality of Jesus

The Aquarian Gospel is a book that I have read around three times, because many of the nuances of this book (particularly the metaphysical riddles) require second reading. This book is a MUST READ for those who plan to watch the movie based upon this book that is presently under production by William Sees Keenan and Drew Heriot. The Aquarian Gospel primarily tries to fill in the gaps and explain the "missing years" of Jesus that have been dismissed rather casually in the Bible by simply stating "And the boy grew in wisdom and stature." How much you eventually like this book will depend upon your objective. If the objective is to read a mystery novel, The Aquarian Gospel will disappoint (you will probably enjoy The Rozabal Line much more as a fast-paced thriller covering the Jesus in India story). If the aim is to read about the "Jesus in India" theory itself, again there are better books out there such as Jesus Lived in India: His Unknown Life Before and After the Crucifixion or The Unknown Life of Jesus: The Original Text of Nicolas Notovich's 1887 Discovery If, however, the aim is to understand the influences of the Eastern traditions upon the spirituality and teachings of Jesus, then this is an ideal read. Throughout the 1960's, The Aquarian Gospel was a big hit with the hippie movement. To that extent, this book acquired a "negative" and "anti-establishment" connotation. However, with today's significantly more liberal attitude towards questioning the origins of Christianity, this book needs to be looked at in a new positive light.

I have just joined the N.E.D. University of Engineering and Technology, Electronics Eng. dept. (2002-2003 batch). I almost finished the book before the classes started.I just wanted to have a knowhow of what I'd be studying in the next 4 years (B.E.), and picked up the book after having a look at this very page.

I must say that this is a wonderful book. It is very easy to understand b/c it has very basic maths involved (which i knew, even when i was in 10th class). It explains quite a hell lot, and i've increased my knowledge very much. I'm sure I'll be a step ahead of my class mates all year long.

I has the best explanation of A.C. circuits, capacitors, inductors, time contants, Diodes, BJTs, FETs ..... which is helping me very much...

It comes highly recommeded, from me, for the complete newbie (although i skipped the first 7-8 chapters.... b/c i had some knowledge from my 12th Physics). MUST BUY

Basic Electronics, 8th Edition, was a big dispointment. I used an earilier edition of Grob in high school. I hardly recognized the book that I received in the mail. Half of each page is given over to pictures that have little or nothing do with the text, and at more than $80 it is over priced. I would recommend "Practical Electronics of Inventors" by Scherz instead.

The Electronic Basics You Need To Know

Review Date: 2007-01-29
This is a classic for giving the basics of electronics to anyone interested in entering the field. I would classify it as a college level freshman or sophomore level introduction. It is simply one of the best! I personally purchased a new/old book, 4th edition. While some might think this means the material is dated, they would be wrong. The basics of electronics remain the same. A great supplement to Grob is the Tony R. Kuphaldt free e-book. The basics are what these books teach. If you want something shallow then get a book like "Horn's Basic Electronics Theory!" If you really want to learn something, get Grob.

This text leads into Malvino's "Electronic Principles." In this case, I would suggest you get the most recent edition of Malvino's book, which is what I did. If you go through both of these books, you will be more than ready for practical application knowledge.

You don't need to go further than this book for a thorough introduction into electronics. The table of contents says it all. It's a must read for anyone needing an understanding of electronics and it serves as a good refrence as well. The presentation is excellent, with the copious use of colour, diagrams and photos. I especially like the little side bars highlighting some of the people whose names are used for units of measurement like Ampere, Marconi, Joule etc. and those whose pioneering work made our current understanding of electronics possible - Millikan etc.

If your're a newbie in the electronics world, this is the book you need to begin with, trust me. One can only go so far without a solid foundation and this is just what this book will help you master! I am a college physics major and I will start my BE in september 2007. The thing is that I allready write electronic articles and I feel very confident about my abilities. Again, a solid foundation is paramount and if you buy this book, you will need to buy Dr. Malvino's Electronic Principles after. This book is more about bridging the gap between electricity and electronics wheras Malvino's book is more about electronics (i.e. talks mainly about semiconductors). But i'm amazed at how these two books complement each other as they weren't written by the same author. With these two books you will have all the confidence in the world about the subject!

This book has excellent information for anyone who is just diagnosed with asthma. If you have been living with asthma for awhile and have been active in the management of your asthma, you may find that there is very little "new" information contained in the book. You will find that the book contains a good description of the various treatments that may be prescribed by your doctor. Be that as it may, the book continues to be a good resource for anyone with asthma.

I have checked much of the info with my pulmonary MD and he too was most impressed and is suggesting it to patients. It is written in understandable terms, with a fine resources section. I've done Callanetics off and on for years. Of course, like most people, I get sidetracked and stop exercising for whatever reason, but I always come back to Callanetics because it WORKS! No, you won't lose massive amounts of weight, but if you are relatively normal weight for you, and you just need to tone up and get everything back where nature originally put it, this is the one for you. I would advise a cardio session a couple of times a week to compliment this program. If you are still skeptical, I would simply invest in the book and look at the pic of the hourly transormation of the one woman throughout her 19 classes. It is simply amazing. then if you aren't convinced, resell the book here or on ebay.

One thing the other reviews don't quite emphasize enough- these exercises are just plain ol' unpleasant to do. It is not fun to sit in a lunge with one leg held out to the side and slowly move it up and down a few inches 50-100 times. The only justification for this torture is that it works. I don't have any interest in exercise per se, just in being strong and looking as good as possible. (And not limping around like Quasimodo the first three hours of the day) I have been doing these exercises for three months. I have lost 5 pounds, and look like I have lost 20. I do 50 repetitions rather than 100 and do it 4-5 times a week, as it is less boring for me to do less more often. It helps to memorize the sets and then review the book or video every once in a while to make sure one is doing it correctly and not dropping any of the exercises. Read the instructions carefully initially so you don't hurt yourself doing it wrong.

I bought the DVD's 10 years younger and super callanetics here on Amazon. I am not ready for super callanetics (although I have heard it works amazingly). I am on my 3rd hour of Callanetics. My stomache is already flatter. I look better, I feel better. I also run and/or hike and bike a few days a week for added cardio. I got the book because of my job, I travel a lot and do not always have access to a DVD player. I am trying to download the DVD onto my Ipod video, but am having difficulties (I blame Apple, not the makers of the DVD). This book is great! I love all the before and after photos and written instructions. I already have a good idea of the exercises from the DVD so the book is nice when I don't have a DVD player handy. I HIGHLY recommend this exercise program. I feel great and energized after (and my sex drive is improved! nice little added benefit :) I recently started doing some yoga shoulderstands and some old school yoga/breathing stomache exercises to supplement this as well. I have been unhappy with my cellulite and stomache for years..... I think I may have found the answer. Be warned, It is hard! I can't finish all the exercises, but, all in due time....

Indeed, still the best!

A few months ago I was clearing up my attic and found the old book. I love fitness, and have done it for ages, but my arms and legs invariably DO bulk, whatever the experts say and whatever method I use! Must be genetics, I have very strong musculature.
I always ended up a lot fitter, but not fitting my dresses and blouses anymore... So I started Callanetics again, and the results are great! Also, I'm no longer bored with the exercises, as I was long ago!
Is Callan P. still active, do any of you know that?? I'd love a new DVD!

This is a fine novel by CS Forester, the author of the magnificent Hornblower series of novels. It tells the story of a fictional American naval sea captain during the War of 1812, one Captain Josiah Peabody--an American charged with the mission of breaking the British blocade of the fledgling United States and wreaking havoc with the British sea lanes. This, he understands, will give America leverage against Britain and perhaps help motivate it to make peace.

As Forester explains, America had failed to prepare adequately for the possibility of war, had not built up much of a Navy, and paid a thousandfold for this folly. Although Peabody is a fictional character, real life American captains like him did exist, and in fact the American Navy won glory against England in the War of 1812 in numerous ship actions that pitted a plucky but weak United States against the world's most powerful sea power.

The story is very well-told, and Forester's insightful portrayal of Captain Peabody is a fine examination of the American character as it is often perceived by Britons. As always, Forester spins a great sea yarn, with all of the technical details perfect (I'm taking other people's word for this, but I know it is true!) and you can practically smell the salt water and hear the waves.

An enjoyable yarn that ranks with the very best stories of naval adventure.

Cecil Scott Forester is, of course, best known as the creator of the Horatio Hornblower adventures in the era of fighting sail. The majority of the heroes of C.S. Forester's books, not just Hornblower, were British fighting men.

However, he also wrote several stories, of which this was the first, with Americans as the central figure. So "The Captain from Connecticut," Josiah Peabody of the U.S. Frigate Delaware, is by no means alone in being an American: however, he is the only hero of a Forester book who actually has to fight the Royal Navy.

The book is set during the war of 1812: the first challenge which faces Peabody and the Delaware is to escape the Royal Navy's blockade of Long Island in terrible weather. Then Peabody has to deal with pirates, a traitor very close to home, and a British squadron which outnumbers him three to one and is commanded by a very dangerous opponent.

Peabody also encounters, and nearly accidentally attacks, a Royalist French governor appointed by Louis XVIII after Napoleon's first downfall. The governor has a ticklish sense of French honour and neutrality, and is accompanied by his attractive sister and beautiful daughter.

Although this isn't quite up to the standard of the best of Forester's Hornblower books, it is an entertaining and exciting story of war at sea in the era of sail, which holds your attention right up to the surprise ending and the twist on the last page.

This is a good piece of writing. Too bad Forester only wrote this and the Hornblower series for he was great in this genre. A good book to read in the dreary days of winter. I'd recommend it to anyone.

a minority view--not of the caliber of the Hornblower novels

I respectfully disagree with the other reviewers who say this is just as good or even better than Forester's Hornblower novels. It's pretty clear Forester was having an off year in his writing. First, the research is atypically flawed: The American captain Peabody knows Long Island Sound well because he served in the "Coastguard Service," something that did not exist at the time (there was a Revenue service, but a "Coast Guard"--two words, not one in British style--didn't exist until 1915). Second, the writing is just clunkier than in the Hornblower novels; at one point Forester uses "fathoms" as a unit of distance rather than depth. Third, Peabody is mildly interesting as a character but is a long way from being as fascinating as Hornblower was even in his first appearance. Whereas Hornblower is constantly in turmoil over his shortcomings, Peabody is a rather predictable fatalist (and the many and annoying references to Providence underscore Forester's own personal disdain for religion).

Still, I found the novel entertaining and worth a read. Just don't expect 'an American Hornblower.'

This book was writen by REV. Maurus fitzgerald, O.F.M inspired by God of course. This book gets me to talking more to Jesus then I use to. The more I pray and use this book it puts me into the prayer mood and keeps me talken to Jesus! I world give this book to a friend or family; it will teach them how to pray and will open their hearts it will fill them up with so much love! When you ask God into your life and you don't pray or talk to Him something just happens you lose that closeness with God. If you are like me you just don't know what to say. Well, with this book it will open up your mind and heart to Jesus! It will help you understand the Catholic Faith and how pure they are when it cames to their hearts and in their faith! I read this book through to the end and started over again and I still feel blessed everytime it read this prayer book.

A very nice, inexpensive book of prayers. Nicely bound in handsome imitation leather jacket. This is my 'go to' book when I need a little extra spiritual guidance for the day. I use this for my morning short devotional prayers and when I am inclined to say the rosary I use this as my guide to the 'mysteries'.

This is a very comprehensive and easy-to-understand prayer book that every Catholic should own.

Somehow someone overnight exchanged my good old eyes that could read the small print on the back of my credit card bill with someone's tired out used and weary eyes that don't work that well. Either that or someone swappped out my arms for shorter ones that cannot hold text far enough away to come into view.

So people like me are very grateful for visible fonts, as in this prayer book.

The Rev. Maurus of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) has been publishing prayer books for some twenty five years. This is a reprint of an edition from twenty years ago. If it is important to you to include the new Luminous Mysteries in your Rosary celebrations, please be certain to get this, the latest edition.

You will find here the regular prayers of the Faithful, including morning, afternoon and evening prayers, as well as such sacramental celebrations as the Stations of the Cross and the Eucharistic Adoration.

The Celebration of the Sacraments includes preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and of course the Mass, with Communion prayers. There are prayers for before and after Mass, and for a variety of Masses, including the Ordinary of the Mass. In the old days this might partially be called a Missal and more; although it cannot replace a Missal with the cycle of readings, it can certainly serve as supplement.

Prayers of the Saints are included. You can also find here Acts of Faith, Hope, and Charity, as well as prayers for sickness, and in death. The commentary on the prayers is also a helpful companion. A section on Our Faith may also be found useful, if necessarily incomplete (study the theologians for more on this, including Jesus: An Experiment in Christology, Praying With Jesus And Mary: Our Father, Hail Mary and Mary: Model of Justice (Reflections on the Magnificat)!).
