I picked this book up out of sheer curiosity and read it to its entirety in one sitting. Jenning's presentation style and narration are excellent - the book flows perfectly and many of the points brought up can be taken and applied.

Stories of successful businesses fill this book. The author got "down and dirty" and did in-the-trenches research to find the best performing companies in the world. Then he spoke with the CEO's to find out what makes them and their businesses tick.

This book is an excellent example of the types of practices and procedures almost any company can follow to be successful both financially and ethically.
Jennings cites numerous companies who have carved out success while still remaining true to their customers, their employees and their values.
Not surprisingly, few of these companies are ones that so called pundits regularly review.
As the other reviews have noted, these companies are very successful financially, but they get there by asking the really pertinent business questions, and not by hiding behind an air of executive invulnerability. The leaders are real leaders, more focused on growing the company, serving customers, and doing right by employees.
What vividly differentiates these companies from the "name brands," is that in the "name" companies, executives are more concerned with their own compensation, preserving their own existence, and with profits at all costs, than long term success.
The questions you should ask yourself after reading this book are, "Where have all the leaders gone?" and "Why don't all companies follow many of Jennings' researched best practices?
After that, I would run, not walk, to one of these companies and see if you can start at the bottom and learn what it's like to work in a real company.

This is not just another book about the secrets of famous companies. It is, instead, a book about the secrets of somewhat obscure but great companies. The principles that author Jason Jennings propounds are familiar enough, but most of his examples will not be familiar to the general reader. That is no drawback. Although some of these companies are less well known, they have all achieved great business success (if not fame) by applying some of the most tried, true and proven axioms of management. Treat people with respect, pay them for performance, focus on one clear and understandable mission - there is nothing new about these principles, except that they keep proving their efficacy even in the unlikeliest places. Do not look for a deep examination of management here. The book provides frustratingly scant background information about the companies themselves. But we assure those seeking a handbook of solid if venerable management advice that you will not go wrong with this interesting little book.

On the lean culture of cost leadership firms

Review Date: 2004-08-02
This spring, I had a night-flight from Houston to Europe. I never got any sleep due to this book. It reads like a fiction novel while the focus is very much on the softer issues of productivity businesses. The well-written behind-the-wall stories and interviews with successful top executives give us insight to many issues that usual case stories do not explain.

Business magazines often glorify top executives by telling about the grand strategic plan behind the success. This little book shows us a different story. It provides insight to the many seemingly small traits of the lean culture that only works because they taken serious by the organization and used in combination. These are the 11 traits required for the leader of a highly productive enterprise: attention to detail, high moral fiber, embracing simplicity, competitiveness, long-term focus, disdain for waste, coach leadership, humility, rejection of bureaucracy, belief in others, and trust.

I'm sure you're really not impressed of this list. Neither am I. But try challenging some of the advice. Humility? When was the last time you saw a big company using this as a standard. When you hear the story of many head offices visited in this book, you'll understand humility. Often you'll find a very simple and humble office building for a huge company. No art on the walls! No lavish entrance hall! In these companies, you don't find huge corporate staff creating immense bureaucracy and all sorts of information requirements from their operating companies or business units. These organizations do actually "walk-the-talk" on lean - unlike many fad-driven major firms who's paying lip service to a lean culture.

PERSISTENCE is a word missing from the 11 traits, though attention to detail and long-term focus do include some of it. They never lose sight of their BIG idea or focus. It includes their performance measurement. "Everyone who works for SRC gathers once a week in their respective lunchrooms and takes part in a review of the business's financial performance for the previous week. By DOING IT WEEK IN WEEK-OUT FOR MANY YEARS the exercise has also become a system".

Okay, I'm sure that the book's research on productivity could have been better. And some of the firms reported on may experience difficulties, though most are still flourishing. But don't read this book for the hard stuff. Read the soft issues that over time usually turn out to be the hardest to beat.

I agree that it resembles "In Search of Excellence" to some degree, but remember that this book is on the lean culture of Cost Leadership firms (my interpretation, not the author's).

I ordered this bible about a month ago, and I absolutely love it. It is an awesome study tool because of its contents. For me......this was a good buy. Because of all that it contains, this bible is somewhat on the heavy side, so you may want to make this a home or an office jewel- unless you are endowed with the strength of Samson. I gave this purchase 4-stars, but I probably should have given it 5-stars, because I really don't know what else should be included that isn't already in here.

I love the print size (way less eye strain), great commentary (detailed and insightful). This bible has been put to very good use since its arrival.

The nice thing about this Bible is the wonderful commentaries. This is one of the only Bibles that I have read where the commentaries actually challenge the reader to put things into practice in their own life.
This is really an "application" Bible giving practical applications to the areas of the users life that are referenced in the reading.
I would like to have this Bible handy each time I am doing a study, meditation or listening to a preacher speak. It gives challenging and in-depth explanation of topics.

Eureka, I found it.....

Some 20 years ago, I was a vegan for a couple of years and absolutely loved this cookbook. Well, my youngest daughter, aged almost-16, recently became a vegetarian. I have pulled out my favorite vegetarian cookbooks, which I had saved, and was horrified to not be able to find The Farm's cookbook. I didn't think I'd ever be able to find it to purchase again. I have very fond memories of that book. I loved the Tofu Quiche, and the Nutritional Yeast Gravy. There were lots of other really good recipes, but those are the two that I made ALL THE TIME. I rate this book up there with Laurel's Kitchen Cookbook, and Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book. (Try the soymilk bread from LKBB--you'll never think of wholewheat bread the same again...yum...). Well, I've succumbed to the lure of an electric soymilk maker (not sure if it is as good as making it the hard way...) , and got an updated hand-operated grain mill, and re-upped my membership in the local natural foods co-op, and am having a great old time.

This book, like Laurel's books, really shines with the personality and warm kindly philosophy of the authors. Fun to read. I bought Ina Mae's midwifery book when I was pregnant with the above-mentioned child, and it was a great help in my pregnancy and natural, mid-wife assisted childbirth.

Can't WAIT to get this book....

Holy Forrest Gump! Looking through this cookbook brings back memories of long flowing skirts and hair, free love, and Woodstock. The recipes are great and worth trying. You probably won't like them all, but give them a try and feel free to experiment! Put on a little California Dreamin', light some incense and cook up a storm. Even if you don't actually use any of the recipes, at least it's fun to own a little bit of contemporary history!

I just wanted some good vegetarian dish ideas. This book impressed the heck out of me when it showed you how to make your own tofu, soy milk and other vegetarian stuff. Though I am not a vegetarian, I am amazed with the details on how to make some of the stuff. Oh yeah, and the recipes seem to be easy enough to follow! :)

I am new to vegetarian eating. I have been looking for ways to make some of the foundation items in a veggie lifestyle. this book tells you how to make tofu, soymilk, seitan (or gluten), etc. I was grateful to read how to make them. I know many people would just prefer to buy the ingredients at the store, but there are some of us out there that want to learn how to make the items. It will involve more of my time to make the food, but it will cost much less than to buy it from the store.

No Sin is Unforgivable
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-23
In some (if not all) of the versions of the Teen Study Bible I have noticed just one of the Dear Sam letters that I don't agree with. When Sam wrote back to someone saying Blasphemy is an unforgivalble sin, I knew unless you reformed and turned to GOD, blasphemy can indeed be forgiven. It is a wonderful thing what Jesus, Son of God has done for us! To forgive all our sins. No sin is unforgivable. No sin is. Not one. The only way a sin is unforgivable is if you commit sins and never accept what Jesus did. Then how could your sins be forgiven? The choice of accepting Christ as savior is a matter of eternal life and death. Jesus makes it very clear that HE is the truth, the way, and the life!God is all powerful! In Luke 10 it says that "Whoever sins against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever says evil things against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven." That verse merely means that only if you sin and do evil things against the Holy Spirit, you apparently do not have the Holy Spirit, and without the Holy Spirit, you can't accept Christ.
However, maybe Sam knew that. (And I'm sure she did). I just think it could be more clear. It is completely your choice wheather to NEVER accept Jesus, therefore if you are WILLING to avoid the point where you hate the Holy Spirit and never WANT to come back into the grace if GOD, than you shall be saved! The LORD is wonderful. Sam's letters are great and empowering. Jesus loves Sam spreading HIS WORD.

This is a GREAT Bible for teens because it is understandable, yet not cheesy. I love it! It makes it understandable and it includes a Bible Study plan showing what book of the bible to start and show how often you should read to finish it in 1 year or 2 years. Also includes real life situations...questions, answers, THIS is the book you need to get through LIFE!!

The Bible normally seems confusing, rigid, and boring. This Bible is quite the opposite! The bible is colorful, easy-to read and UNDERSTAND! It definately makes the bible enjoyable and fun. The notes and other added things really help teens. I got this Bible as a 18 year old and still interesting at 19(although I am thinking about up-grading to a Woman's Bible).

Definately recommend to any pre-teen or teen!

The techniques presented in this book are simple yet spectacular. The discussions regarding some of the more subtle ingredients for building a braise (salt-packed anchovies, salt-packed capers, dried figs, etc.) are priceless. Additionally, the author presents great recipes from the Mediterranean to south east Asia. If you are serious about braising meat, this book is a great place to start.

As a mother of a 15 month old daughter, I was looking for a book that I could read to her that would teach her that she is connected to the universe. I believe that all of our energy combined is God (for a lack of a better word)...and this book says this beautifully. I think I would have loved this book as a child as much as I do as a mother. This is my new favorite children's book after reading it to my daughter for the first time today. I almost had tears in my eyes it is so wonderfully written. I'm looking forward to giving this book as a gift to other spiritual mommy's that I know. The illustrations are lovely and kept my daughters attention the whole time. I will be reading this to her very frequently.

This is by far one of my most favorite children's books. "I am part of all I see, and all I see is part of me." Those first two pages sum it up.

The illustrations are warm, gentle, and beautiful. If you look closely you can see little elves and fairies hiding in the forest. My girls love to try and find them while we are reading.

I have given this book as a gift many times and it is always well received.

Thank you Chara for creating such a wonderful book for our evolving little ones (and their parents)!

This comic inspired me so much when I was in high school. I can't even begin to describe how hilarious and well-done it is. SUCH a shame it costs so much, because it's one of the things you'd like to share with the entire world. I wish I would have taken better care of mine...not that I would ever sell it anyway. I keep coming back to it over and over again, and I'm alomost 29 now. There is so much artistry and humor going on in every single panel. It's like a cornucopia of non-sequitor humor, jabs at cheap American culture, and sheer unadulterated cartoony mayhem. If you don't laugh out loud, over and over again, there is something seriously wrong with you. Plus, there are so many little fun extras (Fizzball, the Road Trip game, Sam & Max explain our Bizarre Universe). Get it and you'll be glad you did.

I don't pretend to know what legal situation/absolute insanity is preventing the re-release of this nugget of genius, but I beg you for the love of all that is holy: DO IT! PLEASE!

This is one of the funniest things I have ever had the good fortune to read. I borrowed it from a friend over 10 years ago, and I now wish I hadn't given it back (I don't see this guy much anyway...). From time to time, I'll try to explain this comic to someone, and the vacant, unfamiliar stare I get in reply is absolutely heartbreaking. Whomever it is that has the authority to reprint this, I am literally begging you to do so. I will gleefully pay upwards of $50 for a reissue, especially if it has some little tiny extra, like an introduction from Purcell; a bundt cake recipe, or just a couple of new sketches. I'm desperate, and $200 for a comic just feels dirty (though I confess, I've considered digging out the credit card for this).

Please.

I read this in Elementary School in Dallas TX in 3rd grade (at least twice) and 4th and 5th a few times as well, so 1972, 1973, 1974. Have like others looked for it off / on ever since. Peggy Bacon is also an artist in the Smithsonian. This book is a classic and historical in so many ways, insane it is not available. The TwoLakesPress.com site of Sean D.'s still says he plans to re-publish it, hopefully that will still happen, if not maybe he out to give the rights to the Smithsonian Institution and let them publish it and sell it through their museum Gift Shops and online. One way or another this book should be made available to those looking for it early in the 21st Century to the kids and grandkids etc of those who enjoyed it during the latter half of the 20th Century, by one of the most well recognized early female artists of the entire 20th century. Peggy Bacon's The Ghost of Opalina (or Nine Lives) deserves a tenth life at the least!

This was a splendid book which even as an adult I wouldn't mind reading over again. In short, the story is based on the nine lives of one clever feline, Opalina. Opalina is now a ghost who still resides in her manor house and shares her various stories with two children who are the newest residents. I read this book when I was about 10 or 11 years old. The thing I particularly remember enjoying about the book is that the narrative takes you back to bygone times. I can't remember if there were any direct historical references, yet it felt as if I was getting a history lesson. There was a great feeling of adventure when you traveled back with Opalina and she shared her stories which were happy and sad, humorous and playful. Overall, it was an excellent blend of fantasy and realism and it wasn't too over the top that a child wouldn't understand the various stories and how they all interconnect. An excellent read for children of all ages, I just wish it was easier to find.

When I finally got it I read it out loud to the entire family, husband included! He wanted to see what all the fuss was about. It was like having an old friend back.

This is the best book that I have ever read. It involves a cat ghost who helps children in all of the different ages up until modern times. If I were you, I would read this book. People might think this is a chilling tale about a ghost, but it is a very funny tale about friendship. My mom read it when she was little and she read it to me. Someone stole it from our library, so now we can't read it anymore. There are no other books like it. This is the best book in the whole world.from Camille

Lady Anne Burness Campbell was betrayed into 14 years of indentured service after her uncle accused her of being a thief because she knew he killed her mother. She chose to be branded a thief rather than return to her Uncle Bain's house and possibly be murdered herself. Her uncle branded her on her inner thigh instead of her thumb so that she would never be able to sleep with a man without being found out as a thief. Anne was sent to the American colonies where she was sold into service to a frontier couple in colonial New York. Her owners are a harsh couple who beat her often because she does not know how to perform the tasks they expect of her.

One day while she is in the barn milking the cow, she hears gun shots and screaming. Realizing that Indians and French are attacking the farm, she goes out the back of the barn and runs through the snow toward the woods. The attack party sees her and pursues her through the forest, intent on raping and killing her. She slips down a rocky slope where the men finally catch up to her but she doesn't give up and keeps on fighting. Just as she is about to be hurt, a big man comes out of the woods and kills all of the men attacking her.

Iain MacKinnon is an exhiled Scot whose family immigrated to colonial New York after losing everything at Culloden. His grandfather was The MacKinnon, laird over his lands until the Argyll Campbells and English defeated his clan at Culloden, killing women and children as well as wounded men. Iain and his brothers Morgan and Conner grew up on the frontier, learning how to hunt and track along with their Indian friends, the Muheconneok. Iain was pressed into service for the British crown after a British Colonel accuses him of a murder he didn't commit then offers him a choice of starting a Ranger company for the Crown or hanging. Since Iain was a Catholic Jacobite, he knew the courts would not listen to him over a British Colonel so he was forced to lead a company of Rangers who fought for the British along with his two brothers who joined with him.

Major Iain MacKinnon is on a scouting mission to Fort Ticonderoga under orders to move swiftly to keep from being seen. He is not supposed to help any colonials under attack because it would give away the location of his company of Rangers. He sees Annie running through the forest and has to make a terrible decision, to save her from being raped and killed which will bring danger to his men because the shooting will bring the French and Abenaki to their position, or let her be killed and follow his orders. Iain is an honorable man who cannot stand to see such a courageous woman harmed in front of him, so he makes the fateful decision to send the rest of the scouting party away and save her on his own.

Iain saves Annie's life but she is hurt from running through the woods barefoot. He carries her on his back through the woods trying to ahead of the large force of Abenaki on their tail who want vengeance for the men he killed saving her. Iain vows to keep her safe and carries her for the next few days on his back, always just ahead of the Abenaki. Annie realizes that no one knows who she is and she could be free from her indentured service if no one finds out. She tells Iain that her name is Annie Burns because she is afraid he will hate her if he finds out that she is an Argyll Campbell.

They reach the fort where Iain is sentenced to 100 lashes for saving her life. Annie tries to get the British officer to relent but he refuses. After being whipped, Annie nurses Iain back to health. They both have feelings for each other but fight the attraction for different reasons. Iain is stuck in the Rangers until the end of the war and does not have anything to offer a wife until he can take over his farm again. Annie cannot sleep with Iain because he will find her brand and know she lied to him. But the passion between them refuses to go away and eventually ignites, leaving Iain and Annie to come to terms with the consequences.

Surrender is a beautiful love story full of action, adventure and passion. Iain MacKinnon is one of the best heroes I have ever read - honorable, protective and caring toward Annie and revered by his men. He does so much for Annie, from carrying her on his back for days after saving her life to doing everything he can to keep her safe from those who would do her harm. Annie was a sweet girl who deserved the protection she gets from Iain after being betrayed by those closest to her and shipped from a life of privilege to a very different life on the frontier. The passion between Iain and Annie is intense and wonderful. The romance in the book just makes you feel good because it's so beautiful. If you like the movie and setting of Last of the Mohicans, you will enjoy this book. The characters and setting of this book come to life and take you on a great romantic adventure. I have read this book three times and enjoyed it more every time. Surrender has earned it's place as my favorite historical romance book.

I had heard really good things about this author and this book. I must say that all praise was well-deserved. If you like Scottish heroes, you have to read this book. Iain has made an impression on me that will make it very hard for future Scottish heroes to live up to. He is fearless, honorable, capable, manly, beautiful and loving. He risks his life many times for his brothers and men, and for Annie, the woman he had no obligation to save, but did, even though it brought misfortune on him and his men.
The adventure in this book is incredible. I am as much a fan of adventure as I am romance. If a book can wrap both up in an appetizing package, I am won over. I don't typically seek out books set in colonial America, but this book has gotten me interested in this period. I loved that although Iain and his brothers faithfully maintain their Scottish identities, they are also seasoned frontiersmen and adopted into the local Indian tribe that we would more easily recognize as the Mohicans. Anna is a compelling heroine who shows strength and honor. She has suffered greatly, but her heart is still huge and capable of love. After reading this book I would definitely call myself a fan of Pamela Clare's books, and find myself very happy that I have accumulated all of her historicals. I may also have to branch out to her contemporaries. Surrender is a must read.

Iann and Annie's story is one of the best American historical romances I've ever read. It combines the tragic romanticism of post-Culloden Scotland with the wild excitement of the American frontier during the French and Indian War--think Last of the Mohicans with a dash of Braveheart. A history major, I have a soft spot for both Scottish and 18th century American history, and I appreciate Clare's attention to historical detail. But you certainly don't have to be a history buff to enjoy this novel.

Lady Annie Burness Campbell is a wholly likable heroine. Like many heroines, she's a young woman with secrets. Unlike most of those silly girls, she actually confides in the hero, rather than obsessively hiding those secrets until the novel's end. In fact, one thing I love about Annie is that she never behaves in the dreaded Too Stupid To Live manner. She recognizes that she's out of her element in the colonies and she has a healthy fear for this strange new world. She lost her father and brothers at Culloden and her uncle has turned out to be a maniacal deviant who murdered her mother--in bed.
The standard romance plot indicates that Annie should now be ridiculously independent due to this emotional trauma. She should decide to never again rely on anyone other than herself for security no matter how often the hero proves his worthiness. While I imagine that this is certainly one way a woman would react to such loss, it's an all too common plot device. (Is there anything worse than the stupidly independent heroine? It's such a blow to female empowerment.)
And thankfully, Clare steers clear of this trite plot gimmick. Annie is a gentle woman who longs for protection but refuses to hide from the truth in order to lead an easy life. Plus, Clare creates a setting that lets the reader know how really hard life can be for a vulnerable woman alone.

And then, Clare creates Iann Mackinnon. WOW. If you liked Daniel Day Lewis in Last of the Mohicans, you're gonna love this guy. He's got the hair, the outfit, the tatoos, the long gun AND a big sword (speaking literally and figuratively), plus a Scottish accent. One of the sexiest heros EVER!
Iann's an alpha hero, but he's never stubborn or stupid or cruel. He's a man with conviction. Like Annie, he's not a 21st century character sent back in time. For some readers, he may be a bit overbearing, but he's an 18th century backwoodsman, Ranger leader, and adopted Indian warrior. Of course he's alpha! But it's crystal clear that he loves his brothers, his men, and he's crazy about Annie. Before he even knows who she is, he's willing to disobey orders to save her life, a decision that comes with serious and painful consequences. When Annie tries to mitigate those consequences at the expense of her own honor, his reaction is truly heroic. I absolutely love this character!

The people, the setting, the dialogue, all of it is incredibly authentic and wildly romantic in every sense of the word. Even the villainous Wentworth is a multidimensional character who could metamorph into an intriguing hero. But you never feel Clare is setting you up to buy the next book. For of all these reasons, I cannot wait to do just that! Thankfully, I can read Morgan Mackinnon's story this month!

After my enjoyable reading experience with Pamela Clare's Ride the Fire, I was told that I simply must read Surrender. Whew man, am I glad I listened to everyone!

Although forced to serve the British during the French and Indian War, Iain MacKinnon does his job well. He and his band of Rangers have had much success but when Iain spies the courage of one beauty about to be ravaged by the Abenaki Indians, he defies his superiors and leaves to rescue her.

Annie Burns Campbell has known betrayal and forced submission as well, having been sold into indentureship by a ruthless uncle and sent far from her home in Scotland to the Americas. But when Iain saves her and takes her along with him she keeps it all inside in the hope that freedom will soon be hers.

Circumstances have a way of changing our heart's desire and Annie decides to risk it all to remain with the one man who has stirred a passion in her she has never known before- only to find that her past is about to catch up with her.

Clare has a feel for what historical romance readers want. Passionate love, strong noble men, vulnerable woman with backbone and yes, steamy sex! And to put it over the top for us- she placed her characters in the same setting as my most romantic movie of all time- The Last of the Mohicans starring Daniel Day Lewis.

Clare's historical's should not be missed!

This is the first book I have read by this author and, boy, can she write. The story is great and the characters are well developed. When I first began reading, I thought this my not be the type of book I'd like, but that changed quickly. The writing is just so good - grammar, diction... and I just really enjoyed the story.

In my english class we had to read a mystery book and make a presentation. I saw that this book was one of the choices that we could choose to read. I had read some of Joans books before and I really liked her writing style. This book was very interesting to read and I could hardly put down the book because of it's suspenseful plot and interesting topics. Joan used very good despriptions and made you feel like you were there with the main character Sarah darnell. I highly reconmend this book as one of the first Joan Lowery nixon books that you would read if you haven't started reading her books and got hooked with her unique writing style. The story gives off a feel of many different feelings and moods that would come natural with the situations that are explained in the writing. This is one of those books that you could be wanting to read later on in the future. I could read this book over and over and not get bored. I hope you decide to read this book if you haven't already and if you have you could probably read it again.

a wonderful book I recommend you to read

This book is about a girl named Sarah. Her family decides to move to this huge house that was on a beautiful neighbor hood. What Sarah's family didn't know was that someone was murdered in the house before they moved. Sarah found this out first hand when she starts hearing voices and seeing things such as puddles of blood on the floor. When she lived in her old town she almost drowned when she went swimming, Ever since she has been linked to another world. She feels as if a dark shadow was following her and when she moved into the house the Spanish voices whispering to her for help. Sarah finds out that the voice she was hearing in the house was from the girl who was murdered. She from there tries to find out what really happened in the murder.

The things I liked about this book were how the detail of the book helped you see and feel and hear what Sarah did. I liked this because it really gets you into the story and you feel as if it were you, not Sarah. One thing I didn't like about the book was how it was kind of boring. Usually when the beginning is boring the person never wants to read on to find out what happens, but I advice everyone to read on because it is a really good book!

People who would like this book would be someone who likes a little mystery or somewhat scary books, even maybe suspense or thriller novels.
