an academic yet practical bookReview Date: 2004-02-05
A must-have for any serious computational researcherReview Date: 2003-11-19
The first 3 chapters of the book introduce Java language. Topics include Java basics, graphics, threads and distributed computing via RMI. The level is intermediate to advanced. Each chapter contains a working example: chapter 1 lists a matrix class; chapter 2 a Java GUI; and chapter 3 an RMI implementation.
The 2nd part of the book is focused on various computational algorithms. Chapter 4 is on Simulated Annealing which is powerful for optimization. The example application is minimizing the free energy of a 3-dimensional Ising lattice.
Chapter 5 is on artificial neural network which is useful for classification. The text includes some tips on stock index prediction using neural network. The example application of this chapter is a Kohonen self-organizing feature map for clustering.
Chapter 6 is on Genetic Algorithm that is inspired from Darwinian evolution. The example application is the canonical "Traveling Salesman problem" in optimization.
Chapter 7 is the cellular automata that have been used to simulate natural as well as social phenomena. The example application of this chapter is a 2-dimensional fluid flow through obstructions.
Chapter 8 is Monte Carlo method that is used in all kinds of simulations The example application is modeling the drift-diffusion behavior of a stock price.
Chapter 9 is Molecular Dynamics which is widely used in chemistry and molecular biology for simulations such as protein folding. The example code of this chapter is evaporation of a 3-dimensional gas.
Chapter 10 is Feynman's path integral. This chapter is a bit technical, requiring background in quantum mechanics. The example application is the pricing of financial options.
Chapter 11 is chi-square fits which is a chore in any data-analysis. The author rewrites a legacy Fortran chi-square fitting routine into a Java class.
Chapter 12 is Bayesian analysis which has recently gained popularity because of advances in computing power. The application code of this chapter is Pixon algorithm in imagine restoration.
Chapter 13 is about Graph which is related to Bayesian method. The example class of this chapter is Kalman algorithm that has been used in real-time projectile (such as missile) tracking.
Appendix is about web-computing, achieved by converting standalone applications in previous chapters into Java applets.

A well-written, informative, and helpful book on Offshore Outsourcing -- by someone who knows first-handReview Date: 2005-09-28
I'm honestly not sure if reviewer John H Kaplan actually read this book. For example, there is a great deal of emphasis on "formal communication" (read: methodology), and how important it is to making Offshore work. Awareness and management of risks, including network security and communcation, financial planning, and even internal communications, are identified and discussed in a pragmatic and accessible fashion.
I take strong exception to this kind of emotional lambasting masquerading as objective feedback. This is not the forum to discuss and decide whether Offshore works. Clearly, if Mr. Kaplan is doing Offshore at all, he is doing it unwillingly. But my firm has had great success with Offshore, both financial as well as in quality of delivery, as many have.
Don't let what is clearly an emotional rant against Offshore Outsourcing deter you from reading and learning from this helpful, focused, and relevant book. Personally, I found the book more useful than Freidman's "The Earth is Flat" as it is written by an actual practitioner -- for practioners.

Pecs - the picture exchange communication systemReview Date: 2000-03-24
The PECS System Review Date: 2004-10-21
Phase I - The physical exchange,Phase II - Expanding Spontaneity
Phase III - Picture Discrimination, Phase IV - Sentence Structure, Phase V - Responding to "What do you want?", Phase VI - Responsive and Spontaneous Commenting
PECS was first developed for use with preschool children with autism that had little or no speech. For the first phase there needs to be a reinforcer assessment. This means picking five to eight edibles that the child/student likes. The items preferred would be picked within five seconds. For those items that were picked at least three times remove them and conduct assessment with remaining items. This continues until a pool of three to five preferred items have been determined.
There are diagrams explaining how this system works. The process starts as backward chaining with the trainers delaying the verbal praise until the student has released the picture into the open hand of the trainer. The helpful hints in this first phase discuss finding the right symbol system.
Some will use black and white line drawings or product logos. Then the size of the photo is determined, usually two-inch. The trainer should wear a apron or waist pack to keep the pictures in and purchase lots of velcro!
Phase II has the trainer moving further away from the student and have the student remove the card from the board and hand to the trainer. The trainer can get up to make the student than have to stand up to hand the card. Verbal praise is continued with reinforcement while the exchange is in motion. A helpful hint is now to have a three-ring binder for the cards, as you move to more pictures.
A diagram in the book shows how this process is done in an easy to understand format. Picture-take picture to materials-materials (no interruptions)-take materials to work area (no interruptions)-activity(no interruptions)-get reward-finish activity-get reward-put materials away-take picture-go back to schedule.

Jenkins starts out by explaining the concept EIL. After that she shortly sums up the arguments against RP. The middle part is a rather technical account of the various features of the LFC. At the end she outlines classroom activities and implications for teacher training courses.
This book can be strongly recommended to anyone involved in ELT.

a great book worth every penny spentReview Date: 2005-12-19
This book will help your child grasp the expected words and reading skills regardless what is taught in school. It has three sections: vocabulary, word analysis, and reading comprehension. Each section highlights the required contents and provides specific drills. Like the Beestar weekly reading/vocabulary exercises (a very good web site www.beestar.org), the fine practice drills not only enforced my child's knowledge and skills, but also made up what missed from his classroom. A well-designed book with real contents. I highly recommend it.
This one book does it all!Review Date: 2005-03-25
Sections include vocabulary (defining words, synonyms, antonyms, homophones, etc.), word attack (syllabication, vowel sounds, using a dictionary, context clues), and comprehension (locating information, note taking, organizing material correctly, using reference material effectively, etc.) Each grade level in this series includes more than 200 reproducible activities to help children master the sequential reading skills at that level. Complete answer keys for all activities are included.

Finally! Something to USEReview Date: 2000-08-17
Often, Shakespeare teaching materials are either watered down so much that it insults the high school students' intelligence. Or, the materials are so centered on performance that the average student becomes scared to death of Shakespeare.
The materials included in John Wilson Swope's activities book is right up my ally. Through the help of his activities, I can complete a two week literature workshop that includes literture circles engaging students in discussions of not only themes, but figurative language, vocabulary and connection to today's culture. What a relief- students don't have to be afraid they will be made to perform in front of the class (not everyone likes the spotlight). With the activities, I can also create a written final in addition to a performing final (some suggestions for performance is included, like unthreatening sock puppet skits). Students are responsible individually and as a group. And, this material is extremely helpful to those on a block schedule. In 85 mins., I need to change my activites 2-3 times a class period; these activities help me do just that. Thanks Swope!
