... and buy this book. The bulk of it is taken up with detailed instructions on how to build the standard robots that are already quite adequately documented in the relevant Mindstorms sets. This should be labeled as "educational material." "You buy this, we'll teach you a lesson."

I'm usually a fan of dummies books and have several on my bookshelf. I'm also a huge fan of LEGO's. I have to say that this book is dissapointing on so many levels. There is nothing new in here that hasn't been covered in one of the many unofficial guides that dummies is shamefully trying to compete with. In fact the robots described come straight from the Constructopedia that LEGO gives away free in every Mindstorms box. Other than having a CD of some useful utilities don't bother. Everything on the CD you can get for free on the net. You should have no problem finding them. In fact if you don't know how to find LEGO related websites on your own you shouldn't be fooling around with robots in the first place. But I drift away from the intent of this review. Don't bother with this book. If you have a Mindstorms kit you have a computer. If you're reading this you're on the net. Spend the $20 on some more LEGO's or one of the unofficial books. You'll get more out of it.

This book was very disappointing. There is nothing new here. The RCX bots all come from the Constructopedia.

This book (2001 edition) is of no use if you are trying to learn how to program your RIS 2.0 The programing is for RIS 1.5 and earlier.

If you are reading it for information on LEGO basic construction techniques, my question would be "Why did you buy a Robotics Invention System set?" Save your money. I don't know what to recommend, but this is not it.

Useless Rubbish

I completely agree with the previous reviewers.

Here is what I found:

1. Writing is extremely simplistic to the point of annoyance. I cannot shake off the impression that this is the first thing the author ever wrote in his life. Which is strange: if you are a programmer, you write documentation, if you work in finance, you write proposals and such. Does the author even have a job of any relevance?

2. The first chapter "What is .NET and how does C# fit in?" is exactly one page long including the title. Yes, my friends, this is exactly how much you should to know about .NET and C#'s place in it.

3. In the second chapter the author writes and I quote: "Prefix is when i++ returns the value of i and then increments itself by one, whereas the postfix operator ++i adds one to i and then returns the value." This is not a typo, there is a table and some examples where the author further propagates on us his confusion about what a prefix and what a postfix operators are. I stopped reading the book after this.

.NET and C# are pretty exciting developments for the Windows platform. More and more job descriptions for quantitative positions in finance require people to know C#. It is said to see that Wiley has chosen an ignorant hack to cover this important topic.

Totally Superficial

I haven't posted a review in a few years. But, this book drove me to it. To echo the comments of the last few reviewers, this book is neither a good introduction into C# or in applying C# in a financial programming context. Compare this book at 138 pages to another Wiley book, Modelling Derivatives in C++, which comes in at approximately 800 pages. How did Wiley let this book, Applied C# in Financial Markets, into publication??? Total waste of time and about the only thing that can be called applied C# in financial markets in this book is the title. As far as the one 5-star this rating this book got, I have to ask if that reviewer is friends with the author.

A bad c# book with a few simple finance examples

I unfortunately bought this book when there were no reviews. The book offers a VERY basic overview of c#. It offers virtually no insight into the advantages of c# in the financial industry. The only reason this book has anything todo with finance is that a few examples are very basic options conepts (ie a black scholes calculator). To top it off - the syntax has quite a number of errors. One is better off buying an o'reilly book for the c# and searching google for a few examples of c# use in finance.

Highly Disappointing!

Highly Disappointing!

From the author's experience mentioned in biography, I had high expectations from "Applied C# in financial markets", none of them was fulfilled by the superficial text which left me wondering why would Wiley ever added it in its financial books portfolio.

As the statement of purpose mentions "This book is designed to help experienced programmers into the C# language. It covers all the relevant concepts from a finance viewpoint." none of this I found to be true. This book is certainly not intended for experienced programmers as "Creating a new project in Visual Studio.Net" and "what is an assembly" are not advance programming topics. If you are looking for credit risk prediction algorithm implementations, Monte Carlo Method, Bayesian inference, artificial neural networks in finance or anything of this genre, this book doesn't cover it. It barely discusses Black - Scholes Option Pricing Models and Implicit finite difference models.

If you are considering it a C# tutorial book, it is not! You may find few interesting examples in chapters of object oriented programming, XML and Trading Exception management but its not worth buying a over priced ($79.99) book when you can find various good tutorials in the market covering a whole lot more than this. I'd recommend to read Joshi's "The Concepts and Practice of Mathematical Finance (Mathematics, Finance and Risk)" C++ Design Patterns and Derivatives Pricing (Mathematics, Finance and Risk) and Microsoft Press's "Microsoft® Visual C#™ .NET Step by Step".

Tutorial on AmigaBasic; obsolete and worthless.

This book was obsolete when it was published, as it is a tutorial on the poorly written AmigaBasic programmed by Microsoft. Almost nobody uses AmigaDOS 1.3, which is the latest OS that this program works. The local library recently bought multiple copies of this book, all of which collect dust on the shelves

This book is out of date and worthless.

This book is a tutorial on the Microsoft written AmigaBasic, which broke at version 1.3 of the operating system due to extremely poor programming practices of Microsoft. As almost nobody can use the Amiga operating system below 2.04, this book was obsolete when it was published. The local library bought multiple copies of this publishing obscenity, all of which are still on the shelves as no-one cares even enough about this tome to steal it

Although this book has a few "good" ideas in it, the research is almost 20 years old. Needless to say that we don't expect the level of thought from Chaudron that we enjoy from Chomsky or Krashen, but this book needs to be retired before it misinforms other graduate students.

Hard to understand - avoid this text
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-13
I found this book difficult to read, not because the concepts were difficult, but because of the writing style. The author seemed to purposely use more complex or obscure terms whenever possible (well past "utilize" for "use") and never seemed to use 1 word when 4 might do.

I have read many texts in a variety of humanities (and science) topics and have not had to stop and translate the text from English to English I could understand in many years. I feel sorry for any students that are using this text.

It saddens me to see a book on language and teaching which is unclear, and attempts to create new words like "innovatory".

who saves us from deconstruction?
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-11
While his previous work revealed many interesting facts about ELT, Pennycook's post-modern ideology leads to disaster in "Critical Applied Linguistics". Indeed, the book's structure is so postmodern that there is hardly any frame left for reader to cling to. The only overarching structure is Pennycook's construction of the four schools of applied linguistics and this classification is extremely questionable. Often one scholar is taken as representing a whole school. In the case of Widdowson, his argument is misrepresented to suit the construction of "liberal ostricism".

But the basic fallacy of the book is Pennycook's attitude towards research.Pennycook argues that, as objectivity is not possible, there is no need to try to be objective. While it is certainly true that notions such as "objectivity" and "rationalism" are often biased, the answer is not to discharge these notions but to use them while being aware of their problematic nature.

I was unaware that this book was for Cambodians. As a relief worker going to Cambodia for a month, I was looking for a good book to take to get me by. The sub-title on the book itself, and not online, is "(for Cambodians)". It would have been nice to know before I bought it.

I can not really rate the content of the book as I can not read it. Pity.
