nice introduction to topic for computer science and stats
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-06
This is a book by Springer Verlag that came out if 1999. This book introduces a lot of useful statistical tools and has chapters written by statisticians and computer scientists. The editors also contribute. They emphasize useful tools and computer tools. It includes material from the artificial intelligence literature including fuzzy set logic, genetic algorithms and expert systems. There is some discussion of data mining, Bayesian methods and neural networks.

Chapters are written on an elementary level for students and pratictioners of modern data analysis techniques. Written mainly as a text but expanded to cover topics of interest to researchers in statistics and computer science by subject matter experts. The last chapter on Systems and Applications by Xiaohui Liu includes coverage of data quality. Among the references on data quality and outlier detection is the book edited by Wright "Statistical Methods and the Improvement of Data Quality". That book was a collection of papers from a conference held in Oak Ridge Tennessee in 1982. That volume was published by Academic Press in 1983. It is not often sighted in the statistical literature but it did contain a number of interesting papers. I contributed a chapter on influence function methods for outlier detection to the Academic Press book.

Hand has written many books on statistics and especially some excellent texts on classification and pattern recognition. His recent work on data mining was published in 1999 by MIT press, a volume he coauthored with Mannila and Smyth. it is one of teh few data mining texts that is highly regarded by the statistical community. Much of that work in referenced in this book particularly in Chapter 1, the overview chapter on intellegent data analysis that Hand wrote himself.

Resampling methods, generalized linear models, Bayesian methods, time series, multivariate analysis, random effects models and entropy are all covered with nice elementary introductions.

This is a great reference source with over 440 articles and books in the list of references.

Broadly Useful Reference For Intellignet Data Analysis

Review Date: 2000-03-06
This book provides a detailed presentation of several important approaches to intelligent data analysis. It has ten chapters, each chapter written by a different technical specialist. The book could well serve as a text for a graduate level course on data analysis. It also works well as a reference. There are many useful illustrations and examples.

The first part of this book is focused on classical statistical issues. Arguably, anyone seeking to perform advanced data analysis should have a working knowledge of this area. It is my personal observation that, unfortunately, many workers do not. This book provides a good way of gaining a broad understanding of statistical methods. My only caveat is that the discussion of naïve Bayesian classifiers could have been more extensive. (The chapter on general Bayesian classifiers is other wise well done.) Naïve Bayesian classifiers have been reasonably successful in machine learning and a more in depth treatment would have been useful.

The later chapters focus on machine learning. They provide useful introductions into: induction, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and stochastic search. These chapters are particularly useful to workers contemplating how to best perform advanced analysis of complex, large, and possibly imprecise data sets. Consequently, someone contemplating data mining or other intelligent data analysis applications should seriously consider acquiring this book.

This book is a great textbook for students who are interested in the control engineering field. Due to the difficulty, it is more focused for graduate students. This book has won the 1999 harold chestnut prize awarded by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). The topics are language and automata theory, supervisory control, Petri net theory, (max,+) algebra, Markov chains and queueing theory, discrete-event simulation, perturbation analysis, and concurrent estimation techniques. This book is used in many universities in the US but also in countries like Korea as well.

This is one of my favorite books in my library on this subject. Also I have used this book for my class as main textbook along with "Iterative Methods for Solving Linear and Nonlinear Equations" by C. T. Kelley , which is another SIAM book.
Highly recommended.

This is a great book for this subject. The book is easy to follow and Saad does a wonderful job of illustrating with examples. This is a great textbook or a book for reference. This book does a particularly good job with Krylov methods and does a reasonable job with preconditioning.

This book is indispensable for the serious language teacher. Firmly based on quantitative research, Nation's book contradicts the dogmas of language teaching found in charlatans such as Krashen. Read his book and learn what really works. Don't go to class without it!

I can't agree more with the previous reviewer. This book is by far the best I've read on the subject--highly informed, highly practical, research-based, and comprehensive. If you're in doubt about whether to buy it, take a moment to look through the table of contents and the excerpts! After reading this book at a library, I can't imagine *not* buying a copy for my classroom.

Phrasebook for the States
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-05
Lonely Planet's "USA Phrasebook" is a great introduction to the American way of life and speaking for foreigners. Whether you are a British tourist going to visit the States, or a person studying English as a foreign language this can be a good guide and reading supplement. Traditionally to Lonely Planet phrasebooks, this one gives you a short and easy-read introduction to the origin and modern state of American English. Then follow the sections dealing with American culture and regional variations.

Firstly, authors give you a few hints on pronunciation, grammar, body language, major musts of conducting a conversation, and insults, all of which in a light practical manner. Secondly, the phrasebook is a cultural studies compilation throwing light on different aspects of American way of life, American society and its dos and don'ts. Various sections tell you about family patterns, dating, weather talk, housing, driving, eating and drinking habits, sports, entertainment, musical tastes, political and educational institutions, influences from US culture on English and international life. Other chapters deal with business or gay talk, slang and jargon (military, surf speak, skate talk and psychobabble). Every chapter tries to give a short introduction, but the main content is delivered through explanation of meaning and usage of numerous words, phrases and sentences. The authors inform you of what can be said and heard, of what can be used or should be avoided. There is also a small section on British-American differences, far from comprehensive but enough to start with. It includes some tips for Brits written in such a funny way that you don't know at first whom to feel sorry for, British or Americans.

The regional section tells you about regional vocabulary in various parts of the country, with separate chapters on the Ocracoke Island phenomenon, Californian, North-West, Central Plaines, New York, New England, Southern English, on the language of African-Americans, Jews, Spaniards, on Pennsylvania German and Hawaiian English. Then come chapters dealing with some Native American languages: Pueblo, Navajo, Ojibway, Mohawk, Lakota, Cherokee, Hawaiian and others. Here you will find both information about the history and culture of indigenous tribes, as well as lists of common phrases and words.

This phrasebook lets you find your way among regional and social varieties, typical words and jargon, geographical and national influences. It will make you understand Americans and their way of life better through the language they speak. Written in a simple language and entertaining manner, while being very informative "USA Phrasebook" is nearly a must-have on your next trip to the States and will certainly be your good companion, which will easily fit in a pocket.

Best "bang for your buck" on learning 'bout American English

Review Date: 2005-04-07
This is by far the best resource on decoding the regional, colloquial, or vernacular dialects found in the USA.

The booklet is very portable, well organized and low priced.

After 17 years of living in the USA (only California), I use this booklet everytime I visit the South or New England States. The phrasebook has a good introduction on the development of the American English dialect, and how culturally ecclectic the US lexicon is.

This pharasebook is written mainly for your average tourist BUT is equally pedagogical for the average US citizen.

This textbook is the best intermediate to advanced statistics textbook currently available on the market today. The Excel instructions are self explanatory and include every step needed to apply a particular statistical procedure. The instructions for calculating joint probability tables and constructing tree diagrams are excellent and easy to follow. The example problems include all the steps. The notation used is simple, direct and straightforward. It will not cause any confusion for a student. The handling of p-values in hypothesis testing and multiple regression analysis is very well done.Based on my extensive teaching experience at the college and university level,I would highly recommend this book to a student, who is taking a statistics course that emphasizes applications, at the intermediate to advanced level.

Great Stats guide for SLA and Applied Linguistics
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-14
This guide will be invaluable to anyone who is planning to do any quantitative research. All the examples are taken from the fields of applied linguistics or second language acquisition. However, the thoroughness and clarity of the writing make this a great book for anyone who is thinking about research design and statistical analysis. The authors do a great job of anticipating difficulties and tying new information to what's already been presented. The book is suitable as a textbook/workbook (exercises are integrated into the text) or as a reference book.

The only drawback is the layout. It looks like it was just typed up in a word processing program and then printed out with no thought to page boundaries or layout. However, the outstanding quality of the contents more than makes up for this minor inconvenience.

a comprehensive guide to statistics in language research
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-02
If you want to understand more about why second language researchers use certain statistical procedures rather than others, and how they go about it, then this book is a must for you. Divided into four parts, the main areas of focus are; i) planning a research project, ii) describing data, iii) comparing groups and iv) describing relationships. Part 1 deals with defining the research question, stating hypotheses and constructing research designs, as well as giving good advice on how to write the research proposal or report. Part 2 is a basic introduction to statistical concepts such as mean, standard deviation and z scores, and is written in a clear and logical style. Part 3 is a little heavy going at times, but the authors have a knack of being able to anticipate the reader's frustrations and go to good lengths to be made understood. T-tests and ANOVA in their various forms, and their non-parametric equivalents such as the signed rank test and Friedman are all covered in detail, with worked examples, as in the other parts of the book. Part 4 deals with correlation, such as chi-squared and Pearson, regression, and principal component analysis and factor analyis. In addition, the appendices contain lists of all the formulas and statistical tables you will ever need should you wish to compute by hand. This is a very thorough and useful book for anyone with an interest in linguistics, or for those who are contemplating doing their own second language research.

This book tells it like is, no holds barred. Anyone who has Chronic Fatigue Immune Deregulation Syndrome (CFIDS), Fibromylagia, Gulf War Syndrome, MS, etc this is a must have for their bookshelf and reference library. Our thoughts become images thus resulting in chronic illnesses passed on to generations. One might think themselves sick and become sick. The scary part is that it is all true. What we think, we become.

Fascinating and compelling.

Not a "heavy" read, it is enjoyable and compelling, while delivery accurate, well researched scientific facts. Highly recommended.

Dr. Justice's book is an excellent summary in non-technical language of the interconnections between mind and body and their effects on health. Thoroughly researched, broad in scope and reader friendly, this is both a good solid introduction to the field of psychoneuroimunology, and an excellent reference source of information. I would find it difficult to believe that anyone with an honest interest in healing would not find something between the covers that was usefull and relevant.

For a more technical and theoretical work, check out "The psychobiology of mind-body healing", by Rossi.
