A near Psychotic Break-7 on the Ritcher Scale

Written by two psychotic professors who are experts in the field. The book, though written for mature readers , is lucid
and leads the reader scenically to thre climax on Process Algebras. The book is a bit disjointed though. In Theoretical
Computer Science, where the more general a "general emotional disturbance" is the better, I suggest that the authors should
have had worsened their illness somwhat (I am being funny now!) by utilizing Category Theory, Domain Equations, and Universal
Algebra as a unifying framework for the topics in the rest of the book. Also, they should have ncluded more on Category Theory
and in particular, Domain Equations in this book. They should had shown the interrelationships between the three frameworks
as well: the book would have been lengthened somewhat but more complete.
Although I am just about to read the book, I feel I am mature enough to follow where a Math book is going upon looking through it in sequence.
I am an undergrad at CUNY Bachelaureate Program Queens College Math Department who is trying not to be arrogant.

An Excellent introduction to key environmental debates

A very useful undergraduate level reader in environmental ethics. I use it in the course I teach in the UK. It would also
make a good tool for self-teaching or for self-led small group study. For each chapter of readings there are discussion topics,
an exercise, suggestions for a debate and a selection of further reading. The wide-ranging readings are carefully chosen,
edited and arranged into key themes such as morality, aesthetics, ecofeminism and environmetnal ethics in society. The only
other book to cover similar material in a similar manner is Louis Pojman's 'Environmental Ethics: Readings in Theory and
Practice'. In my opinion they are equally valuable, making it difficult (should it be neccessary) to choose between them.
From a British perspective they both lack historical depth. Botzler and Armstrong's book has only two readings from the eighteenth
century or earlier (St Francis and Kant) but this can be supplied from elsewhere if needed.

A Superb Collection

I want to applaud the editors of this volume for including a diverse set of viewpoints. A few other works of this type merely
include the "typical" pieces of authors such as Thoreau. While these authors are included in A Forest of Voices, other not
so well-known authors are found as well. Some of these authors argue the politically correct approach to environmentalism
common in our society today. Others do not, thus providing an important balance of views. While I cannot say I agree with
the authors in many of the pieces, I applaud the collection of works. As its apt subtitle suggests, A Forest of Voices does
provoke stimulating Conversations in Ecology.

If you are language teacher or aiming to be , you need this book. You'd begin to think deeply what language is, what language
learning is and then what language teaching is. This book will bring you a chance to consider the relationship of educational
linguistics to the study of language education.

automation to build the Semantic Web?

Review Date: 2006-12-23
Sanchez suggests that in order to build out the Semantic Web, the use of fuzzy logic will be inevitable. The Semantic Web
is an attempt to use primarily automated methods, that mostly still have to be devised, to "understand" web pages. The problem
is that these pages are geared towards human wetware comprehension. And pages are often badly cast, with typos and just different
uses of the same terminology. Due to the impreciseness of any human written language.
To analyse these, the papers in the book offer fuzzy approaches. Instead of using binary valued logic. A very promising direction that may prove fruitful.
The book also contains a keynote paper by Lotfi Zadeh, the founder of fuzzy logic. This paper looks at the search problem. One which has already made Google into one of the great computer companies. Zadeh considers how searching can be improved, beyond the now standard link analysis pioneered by Google.

Combining Humor and Theory for ESL Instruction

Unlike the majority of TESL texts, Swales manages to treat his discipline with respect while not becoming pretentious or defensive
about the lack of research backing most of the theories. His combination of humor and anecdotal examples with clear theories
reminded me of Alder and Van Doren's "How to Read a Book": personable, enjoyable, and clear principles that will make experts
in the field nod in agreement while providing graduate students with plenty of research topics.

That mathematicians value excellent writing becomes apparent when one considers the number of expository writing prizes awarded
by their organizations and who has won those awards. The Handbook of Writing for the Mathematical Sciences offers a comprehensive,
precise presentation of the significant areas a mathemetician or technical editor of mathematical papers must deal with from
the use of dictionaries and thesaursus, through what makes for excellent mathematical writing, style, making presentations,
publishing, and much more. In fact, it may try to cover too much. This book is one to keep handy next to your writing area
for easy reference.

I am a 7th grade teacher, and I am presently having my students complete a Newbery Award title. At the end of the book project,
I will hand out their word finds and have them switch with one person in the class. I'm hoping this will create more dialogue
in addition to the project's requirements. The word finds contain each Newbery Award-winning title up to 1997. The newest
titles are out-of-luck, so for extra credit, I will ask those students to submit a word find for their title. The book needs
to be updated, this is why I give it a rating of 4 stars.

The text is directed at a reader already well versed in statistics. But who is not primarily a programmer. So it offers you a crash course in object oriented statistical programming, using Fortran as the language. This is probably an easier approach than trying to teach a programmer several years of advanced statistics.
Frankly, C++ or Java or C# are better for OO coding. But the book reflects the reality of a lot of existing Fortran code that you probably need to use or conform to. And F95 does give you a basic OO ability.
