This will be inescapable reading for those in grad. school, and will collect dust on the shelves of the teachers after grad. school.

Covers all the relevant theoretical and research areas. It is academic and many not suit all. However I found this book indispenable in helping me undertstand what is going on in this field. I plan to read it again very soon.

compensation from its sale. Having declared this possible conflict of interest, I can recommend
purchase of this book if you are interested in learning what can be discovered from the face
through measurement of facial muscular action in scientific research. Its approximately 500
pages contains 22 scientific articles, mostly published previously in journals, that report
research studies conducted in the late 1970s to the early 1990s, most towards this later date.
These articles cover a diverse range of topics, methods, and principles having to do with the
relationship between facial expression and emotion; clinical diagnosis, treatment, and outcome;
and other related issues. The editors's selection process, based on the use in the study of the
Facial Action Coding System (FACS, a method for measuring facial behavior), has included
competent research with above average interest, thoughtful reflection, theoretical and practical
relevance, and plain good sense that generally exceeds what you might find, for example, in your
typical social psychology journal. The authors of the articles work in many places around the
world and represent most of the people in the vanguard of the FACS movement and the new
approaches to studying behavior and emotion. This book is particularly helpful if you are new to
the study of facial behavior or have not been diligent in collecting the important articles using
facial measurement, which are published many different journals. The book provides an efficient
vehicle to catch up on the significant issues, findings, trends, and controversies in the areas
covered, including the quality and usefulness of the information provided by the face, the
relationship of facial expression to emotion, whether emotion is a coherent response system,
differences between genuine and false smiles, expression in pathological states, affect in the
psychotheraputic process, etc. The included works provide a solid foundation for understanding
how facial measurement contributes to investigating behavioral science problems. Even in the
unlikely event that you have previously read all the published works reprinted here, this volume
has value because each chapter has at least one afterward that expands on the original work in
revealing and useful ways that bring you up to date on the topic, and there is one thought
provoking article by Ekman et al. on the relation between facial behavior and psychiatric
outcomes that you will not find elsewhere. Also, the editors include their own new chapters
introducing, and finally, summarizing and integrating the works included. A table of contents,
forward by M. Brewster Smith, original source references, author list, and a lengthy subject
index are included. Take a look at the table of contents provided on this site to see more
details. The overall statement of this book is that the face contains important data about
concepts that are vital to diverse behavioral science issues. You will find that the perspective
of this book is different from several other books on facial expression currently in print. If
you are contemplating research on emotion, facial behavior, non-verbal behavior, and related
topics, this book is a helpful guide containing useful background; if you are currently planning
research in these fields, it is indispensible reading.

As a general reference guide to phonemic inventory of American English this book is unraveled. I have never come across a book containing that much info on each phoneme, including allophonic variations, acoustic parameters and some auditory peculiarities of main allophones, spelling-pronunciations conversions, frequency data, etc.
A workbook with CDs can be used as a nice tool to practice American English transcription on basic level, with some rare exercises on transcribing disordered and accented speech. There are loads of exercises, but they are not very advanced. the author follows the principle by going from easy tasks to more difficult ones, but he does not go very far into details. Transcription exercises in Roach's Phonetics and Phonology (one of the best PRACTICAL phonetics books for beginners, British English) are better, although there are much fewer of them. This workbook can provide additional exercises (please watch the differences between British and American English if you combine) and for some practice in disordered and accented speech.

Worth Buying, Reading and KeepingReview Date: 2002-07-29
Mr. Snow writes for a broad audience, seeking to identify with liberals, moderates and evangelicals within the pale of Christendom. On this score he does a magnificent job of presenting encouragement and useful ideas to drive along Christian mission within the context of English teaching.
One area in which I would have to disagree would be his insistence that teaching English to the poor in a given nation should not include any type of encouragement to move overseas in pursuit of a better life. He argues that this defeats the purpose of teaching English to help improve a developing nation (though later he admits that this may not always be the case). This may well be true in many nations. However, in Brazil I have found that most Brazilians living overseas send money back to their families. They help build businesses and put fellow family members through school. Often, these Brazilians living overseas return to Brazil with savings to invest in opening their own businesses. Their English skills are also frequently so polished after time in North America or Great Britain that doors are opened for them to become English teachers as well. All this contributes to the development of a nation.
The final chapter of the book deals with building bridges with national churches. Certainly, this chapter is more interesting to liberals and moderates than to evangelicals. Though I considered it an interesting read, I have serious difficulty accepting that all that is called "Christianity" is authentic.
All in all, this is a great book, well worth the price and one that hopefully will be followed by others by different authors in this exciting field of missions.
The Many Vocations of an Overseas English TeacherReview Date: 2006-11-02
Snow argues that an American serving as an English teacher overseas wears three basic hats: that of a representative of Western/American culture, that of a Christian, and that of a teacher. This last vocation, Snow argues, is primary and success as a teacher leads to success as a Christian and representative of the West. Should one be diligent, professional, competent, and caring as a teacher, the students (and faculty, etc.) will have a positive view of that teacher. They would thus be willing to hear his views on the Christian faith and thoughts on Western culture. Snow correctly points out that while many conservative Evangelical groups view the English teacher's main goal as conversion of non-Christians and liberal/mainline denominations view the English teacher's main goal as helping the poor and downtrodden an overemphasis on these aspects (although they are important) actually serve to harm the overall effort of the English teacher. People easily pick up on duplicity and condescension.
"English Teaching as Christian Mission" is a highly-organized book. Snow clearly lays out his major thesis and gives sub-theses toward the beginning of every chapter (and often previews how he will defend his thesis). He gives adequate support to his theses in various forms: statistics, anecdotes, the work of other authors, personal experiences, etc., and is confident enough in his thesis to present opposing views. The chapters are divided in such a way as to view the English teacher's vocation from various angles, yet Snow does this while continually keeping the main point of the book in mind.
In all, Snow tackles a large and complex subject in such a way as to appeal to a wide variety of readers: from evangelical to liberal Christians. His writing style is more weighty than I anticipated, yet remains approachable. Recommended.

That one chapter is Chapter 8, "Crying and Personal Transformation." In it the author advises the reader to stay with the feelings that evoked the tears, to make new connections to them, and to deepen the effects of what you lived through.
All the other chapters are fact-driven bits of trivia, written like an almanac or database on the subject of tears, none of which are engaging for any length of time, let alone helpful to the promise of changing your life. Most pervasive were the author's observations on fake tears and on tears for the purpose of manipulating others.
To get to the really deep meaning of tears, you need only read Chapter 8.
