There are 10 total chapters to this book, but only one chapter that has any potential at all to "change you life" as the author promises will happen to you once you finish his book or, at least, his introduction.

That one chapter is Chapter 8, "Crying and Personal Transformation." In it the author advises the reader to stay with the feelings that evoked the tears, to make new connections to them, and to deepen the effects of what you lived through.

All the other chapters are fact-driven bits of trivia, written like an almanac or database on the subject of tears, none of which are engaging for any length of time, let alone helpful to the promise of changing your life. Most pervasive were the author's observations on fake tears and on tears for the purpose of manipulating others.

To get to the really deep meaning of tears, you need only read Chapter 8.

Very interesting!

It gives you a new perspective about crying. About all the different types of tears there are, of when and why we cry. The emotions that crying evoque. How we view tears and what we make out of them depending on the circumstances. But most important, it gives you a good idea of how to "read" tears, therefore you learn the language of tears.

intriguing subject matter.

In this intriguing study, bestselling author Jeffrey Kottler provides insightful and surprising answers to questions such as: Why do we cry? How are tears interpreted in different cultures? When is crying therapeutic and when does it become self-destructive? This text challenges conventional attitudes toward tears and shows how valuable they can be.

It is a wonderful book.

TBL IS ALL THE RAGE, BUT....

Review Date: 2007-10-19
Like almost all of Ellis's books, this book is a very good representation and summary of much of the pertinent research up to the time of the book's publication (2003) on the now-all-important concept of 'task-based learning'. The problem in the plan, though, is most likely that TBL will be old news and not really provide definitive solutions to real-world teaching and language learning. Second Language Acquisition is very good at breaking down learning into chunks for academic analysis, but it is very weak at putting the poor Humpty Dumpty of real language teaching back together. And why shouldn't it be weak? It isn't like most people who are professional SLAers actually have to teach a full course load or write syllabues and tests for those courses.

This will be inescapable reading for those in grad. school, and will collect dust on the shelves of the teachers after grad. school.

This book is a must read for those interested in TBLT.
Covers all the relevant theoretical and research areas. It is academic and many not suit all. However I found this book indispenable in helping me undertstand what is going on in this field. I plan to read it again very soon.

There is still a very small amount of books on TBLT. For years to come this book will be the 'bible' of this field. Covers all the relevant research, theories and so forth in sufficient detail. It is academic and may not interest the average language teacher. I have just finished reading it and intend to read it again. For those interested in doing research in this area, it it has many excellent ideas.

For Figurative Artists

Review Date: 2008-09-07
For visual artists wanting to hone anatomy and facial expression skills, in addition to learning about faces through studio sessions and drawing books, scientific journals, and perhaps an independent study of ones own on individual "racial" facial morphologies, will give you a better understanding of the hows and whys of facial expression. If you can get a university library card and borrow this, or find out which journal articles are in it, I highly recommend learning from it. If the terminology loses you, instead of throwing the book down, or dismissing it because it seems jargonous (it's not intended to be, these people have studied for a long time with this language, and work better together when using words with relevant, descriptive meanings), learn it and try to understand the study from their point of view.

Emotion, Personality, Theraputic Outcomes, and More
Helpful Votes: 124 out of 140 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-08
I am a contributor to this book and know many of the other authors therein, but receive no
compensation from its sale. Having declared this possible conflict of interest, I can recommend
purchase of this book if you are interested in learning what can be discovered from the face
through measurement of facial muscular action in scientific research. Its approximately 500
pages contains 22 scientific articles, mostly published previously in journals, that report
research studies conducted in the late 1970s to the early 1990s, most towards this later date.
These articles cover a diverse range of topics, methods, and principles having to do with the
relationship between facial expression and emotion; clinical diagnosis, treatment, and outcome;
and other related issues. The editors's selection process, based on the use in the study of the
Facial Action Coding System (FACS, a method for measuring facial behavior), has included
competent research with above average interest, thoughtful reflection, theoretical and practical
relevance, and plain good sense that generally exceeds what you might find, for example, in your
typical social psychology journal. The authors of the articles work in many places around the
world and represent most of the people in the vanguard of the FACS movement and the new
approaches to studying behavior and emotion. This book is particularly helpful if you are new to
the study of facial behavior or have not been diligent in collecting the important articles using
facial measurement, which are published many different journals. The book provides an efficient
vehicle to catch up on the significant issues, findings, trends, and controversies in the areas
covered, including the quality and usefulness of the information provided by the face, the
relationship of facial expression to emotion, whether emotion is a coherent response system,
differences between genuine and false smiles, expression in pathological states, affect in the
psychotheraputic process, etc. The included works provide a solid foundation for understanding
how facial measurement contributes to investigating behavioral science problems. Even in the
unlikely event that you have previously read all the published works reprinted here, this volume
has value because each chapter has at least one afterward that expands on the original work in
revealing and useful ways that bring you up to date on the topic, and there is one thought
provoking article by Ekman et al. on the relation between facial behavior and psychiatric
outcomes that you will not find elsewhere. Also, the editors include their own new chapters
introducing, and finally, summarizing and integrating the works included. A table of contents,
forward by M. Brewster Smith, original source references, author list, and a lengthy subject
index are included. Take a look at the table of contents provided on this site to see more
details. The overall statement of this book is that the face contains important data about
concepts that are vital to diverse behavioral science issues. You will find that the perspective
of this book is different from several other books on facial expression currently in print. If
you are contemplating research on emotion, facial behavior, non-verbal behavior, and related
topics, this book is a helpful guide containing useful background; if you are currently planning
research in these fields, it is indispensible reading.

As a secondary-level English Language, I find this book to be a wonderful resource for teachers. It contains a potpourri of word games that make language learning interesting and fun. Activities are varied and include riddles, crossword puzzles, mazes, word constructions etc. The book is divided into sections (including one on Literature) focusing on different aspects of the curriculum, and teachers will easily find an activity to suit their own needs and lesson plans, as well as cater to the abilities and standards of their students. An added advantage is that the book is printed in a big spiral-format that allows materials to be easily photocopied. This book will be a valuable and handy tool to the busy teacher, whether s/he is looking for materials to use as a filler in class, or to reinforce concepts taught.

I've been using this book since 1995. I use version 4.2 of Mathematica now and the fact that Shaw and Tigg wrote it for 2.2 doesn't matter. It teaches ways of thinking about problems in Mathematica that most other books don't even try. I use Mathematica almost daily in my professional life. If I run into a problem with applying Mathematica I invariably end up using Shaw and Tigg(I have 6 or 7 other references) rather than any others. I highly recommend this book. My only regret is that they haven't written a book in applying Mathematica to Boundary Value Problems in Physics. As they are both theoretical physicists I'm sure they would do a great job.

This book is rather strong on data analysis. (linear regression, scattergram, etc.) It also explains various methods (both 2D and 3D) to graphically present such analyses. (e.g. fourier filtering, graphs with lots of interesting diagrams, etc.) I am sure social science people will enjoy this book. Plenty of examples to let you get on track quickly. However, rather weak on explaining theoretical bits (which makes it leave out certain important options and so on.)

N.B. For Mathematica 2.1 or lower.

This is a reference book rather than a textbook. Theoretical questions are covered very scarcely, definitions of major phonetic and phonological concepts are inadequate for the students of linguistics. Suprasegmental phonetics is not dealt with at all (a brief chapter at the end of the book is not counted as a coverage of suprasegmentals). The book does not explain things. I do not recommend it as a major textbook for the students. Because of the fact that this book is featured as a textbook, I give it three stars. It is not very good to be used as a major textbook, but still the book is worth having as a guide into phonemic inventory of American English.
As a general reference guide to phonemic inventory of American English this book is unraveled. I have never come across a book containing that much info on each phoneme, including allophonic variations, acoustic parameters and some auditory peculiarities of main allophones, spelling-pronunciations conversions, frequency data, etc.
A workbook with CDs can be used as a nice tool to practice American English transcription on basic level, with some rare exercises on transcribing disordered and accented speech. There are loads of exercises, but they are not very advanced. the author follows the principle by going from easy tasks to more difficult ones, but he does not go very far into details. Transcription exercises in Roach's Phonetics and Phonology (one of the best PRACTICAL phonetics books for beginners, British English) are better, although there are much fewer of them. This workbook can provide additional exercises (please watch the differences between British and American English if you combine) and for some practice in disordered and accented speech.

This is a great book but I would recommend getting the second edition (this edition has the subtitle "the sound of American English"). I compared the second and third editions and found that the contents do not differ between the two editions. However, spectrorgams and diagrams are sharper and easier to see in the second edition.

Review Date: 2005-08-19
The best thing about Edwards' "Applied Phonetics" is that it can be used by both the beginner and the expert phonetician. For beginners, the text is thorough but easy to understand. For the expert, there is extensive detailed information about each phoneme. The CD's that accompany the text are useful, though some of the accents used are not easy to understand. Highly recommended for students.

I am aware of spiritual principles describing how life works. For years I have seeking easy-to-read and understand physiology and biology to allow me to explain the grounded roots of this in lay terms. Dr. King's book does this. I would not have expected a book about cells and biology to be so fascinating that I could not put it down. And it was. Did you know that neurons reach for each other and if they cannot find connections, they die? Just like us humans!! This is Life 101 and a primer for all who want to increase their success and achievements and wisdom.

I like science, but I'm not a scientist. The terminology was easy to read and although I did learn a little about the anatomy of the cell, it was mostly about how little we know about the order and structure of the universe which is also encoded within the cells of our body.
How we can make changes that affect our cellular growth and health. It was an easy book to read.

As a Life Coach and Clinical Psychologist , I have often stated that change best occurs from the inside out and that biology and nature offer us much wisdom to learn from. Joan King, In Cellular Wisdom has captured both of my beliefs and brought biology knowledge to its application in our everyday living. Cells are our most basic structure and we often ignore or are ignorant of what we can learn about LIFE from the biology of our human body.
Dr. King has written a magnificent book that is both scientific and metaphysical and offers wisdom from the body to apply to all systems in your life. Read slowly and thoughtfully.

This is a great pocket dictionary of American (and only American) slang, working just like a regular dictionary. Each word or phrase has a pronunciation using the International Phonetic Alphabet (so you get it just right), its grammatical type, definition, a sentence showing its proper usage, a list of synonyms, and a number rating its offensiveness from 1 (non-offensive, can be used in casual situations) to 6 (hateful and extremely insulting). This is a great book, the best in its class. I highly recommend it.

Review Date: 2002-07-29
As a bivocational missionary/English teacher in Brazil, I was anxious to read this book after first hearing about it. The area of Christian English teaching is in serious need of good theory and writing, and this book is an excellent first step in the right direction.

Mr. Snow writes for a broad audience, seeking to identify with liberals, moderates and evangelicals within the pale of Christendom. On this score he does a magnificent job of presenting encouragement and useful ideas to drive along Christian mission within the context of English teaching.

One area in which I would have to disagree would be his insistence that teaching English to the poor in a given nation should not include any type of encouragement to move overseas in pursuit of a better life. He argues that this defeats the purpose of teaching English to help improve a developing nation (though later he admits that this may not always be the case). This may well be true in many nations. However, in Brazil I have found that most Brazilians living overseas send money back to their families. They help build businesses and put fellow family members through school. Often, these Brazilians living overseas return to Brazil with savings to invest in opening their own businesses. Their English skills are also frequently so polished after time in North America or Great Britain that doors are opened for them to become English teachers as well. All this contributes to the development of a nation.

The final chapter of the book deals with building bridges with national churches. Certainly, this chapter is more interesting to liberals and moderates than to evangelicals. Though I considered it an interesting read, I have serious difficulty accepting that all that is called "Christianity" is authentic.

All in all, this is a great book, well worth the price and one that hopefully will be followed by others by different authors in this exciting field of missions.

The Many Vocations of an Overseas English Teacher
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-02
Donald Snow is a missions executive with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a veteran of Teaching English as a Foreign Language mission trips to other countries. "English Teaching as Christian Mission" is an effort to define and unpack the various vocations an American English teacher in a foreign nation enjoys. Snow additionally shows the reader that particular vocation's importance and gives advice for success.

Snow argues that an American serving as an English teacher overseas wears three basic hats: that of a representative of Western/American culture, that of a Christian, and that of a teacher. This last vocation, Snow argues, is primary and success as a teacher leads to success as a Christian and representative of the West. Should one be diligent, professional, competent, and caring as a teacher, the students (and faculty, etc.) will have a positive view of that teacher. They would thus be willing to hear his views on the Christian faith and thoughts on Western culture. Snow correctly points out that while many conservative Evangelical groups view the English teacher's main goal as conversion of non-Christians and liberal/mainline denominations view the English teacher's main goal as helping the poor and downtrodden an overemphasis on these aspects (although they are important) actually serve to harm the overall effort of the English teacher. People easily pick up on duplicity and condescension.

"English Teaching as Christian Mission" is a highly-organized book. Snow clearly lays out his major thesis and gives sub-theses toward the beginning of every chapter (and often previews how he will defend his thesis). He gives adequate support to his theses in various forms: statistics, anecdotes, the work of other authors, personal experiences, etc., and is confident enough in his thesis to present opposing views. The chapters are divided in such a way as to view the English teacher's vocation from various angles, yet Snow does this while continually keeping the main point of the book in mind.

In all, Snow tackles a large and complex subject in such a way as to appeal to a wide variety of readers: from evangelical to liberal Christians. His writing style is more weighty than I anticipated, yet remains approachable. Recommended.

Recent decades have seen an ever-increasing number of Western Christians going abroad as English teachers. Many of these teachers are going to countries that are not very receptive to other forms of Westermn Christian mission. Some Western Christians view English teaching primarily as a means to gain access to "closed" countries for the purpose of evangelistic outreach. Others see it mainly as a form of social service. Donald B. Snow's well-thought out details of how to bear witness, engage in ministry, serve the poor, contribute to peace, and build bridges of understanding between churches clearly show the special role in Christian mission that Christian English teachers can have.
