*Netscape HTML* one of the few readable HTML books out there

Learning to write your own web pages takes just wading in. Creating Your Own Netscape Web Pages was the easiest intelligent HTML editor book I found, and it was actually pleasant to download HotDogPro to use on a trial basis and really start swimming in my home page. It could provide more info on uploading your finished page to your server; that only took three phone calls for me to accopmplish! And a few more colorful graphics to give a better feel for the process would have been nice, but not necessary. There are lots of handy tips for obtaining graphics and links. You won't need any HTML skills to pick up this book and get going. Have fun!

This is a good book for the fledgling html student.

This book is well written and not too technical. The exercises are clear and easy to follow. The simplicity seems somewhat excessive, and unduly repetitive at times. But a fast learner can easily recognize repeated instruction and fast forward through a chapter.

SoftQuad has offered an upgrade to HoTMetaL Pro 4.0 for a reasonable price

In general, it is a good book, slightly wordy (and that's a good thing)but needs to handle more specifically what the whole "thing" about dhtml is. Get this book if you want to learn it, for home use, but not if you really want to use DHTML for extensive business related things.

Given the age of this book... it's a good book

eFFECTIVE WEB DESIGN is a good html coding book that touches on CSS. In fact, this book includes xhtml 1.1 information, and basics on reading and writing a DTD. The book is a 2001 book, which means Ms. Navarro must have finished it up in 2000 to submit to publishers. Since 1999 was when xhtml 1.0 was published by the standards organization, W3C, covering some of xhtml 1.1, in a writing of 2000, when most browsers barely supported xhtml 1.0 with CSS 1 is looking forward a good bit.

The book is written in the old style, that is graphic design 101, coding plus color theory for impact. Graphics themselves are very lightly covered. An intro to Jasc, Photoshop, and Fireworks are about all you get on graphics.

On one hand, this book is utterly out of date, in the fact that CSS is the primary style layout tool now. On the other hand, because CSS is so loud these days, HTML may be falling by the wayside in peoples necessary knowledge of it.

Either way, this book was ahead of it's time, and now, only 5 years later is now behind the present time. For the price you'll get it, it may be the only technical html tutor you might want to bother with.

Ideas for a Family Web Site
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-31
This book, published in 1996, still has plenty of good information for the person who wants to build a family web site. Most of the technical information is probably old-hat to most people who navigate the web today, but the ideas for a family site are what make the book so valuable. It gives the reader some good ideas about content, such as a family newsletter, guest book, recipes, family tree, and a whole lot more. Getting the visitor's attention - and keeping it - will be key, so it's important to think about how to keep the site lively and interesting. A worthwhile start!

The content of the book was easy to understand. Geared toward users with a very basic knowledge of HTML. The layout and format were excellent. My only problem with this book was that the data disk enclosed with the book did not match the exercises. I had the same problem with the Fundamentals book. I worked around the problem and got the full effect of the lessons anyway.

One of the best formatted books on programming I've seen.

What I liked: The book provides good references into the basics of building a web page. Each reference provides on the one page a "visual" example of what you are building, and on the opposite page a description of how to write the HTML for the example both in numbered steps and in text.

What to be wary of: Several examples leave out the closing of the HTML item being described. The one I discovered first was the "option" - "/option" used in creating forms. My web page editor very nicely added it (incorrectly) and it caused me some confusion to fix the problem. Be careful to close all items regardless of the examples.

Overall summary: The examples and "visual" set-up of the book far outweighs the minor, though sometime irritating errors.

A general how-to-do-it book which offers a particularly good treatment of the initial brainstorming stage. See pages 52-54 for the author's great suggestions for making a mock-up of the arrangement of the site.
