While most books on this subject target Web services in internet based commercial applications, this book targets the most quickly growing developer audience for XML Web services - the corporate solution developer.

Don't be fooled however, by its slim 190 pages. There is ample content in those pages, including a comprehensive section on securing Web services.

One feature of the book that is especially worth noting is the "extra credit" section located at the end of each chapter. These sections encourage the reader to take the concepts presented in the chapter and apply them to solve current problems in their corporation.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading XML Web Services in the Organization and was able to immediately apply what I had learned in a real-world solution.

The book is almost 400 pages and all 400 are material, The argument for the importance of XML is made quickly, and the basics of well-formed syntax are tackled right off. The wise use line by line explanations and their analysis gives readers the feeling that the authors are sitting by their side and showing them how to code scripts. One notable distinction of this book is its excellent coverage of related technologies, such as CSS, DOM, XSLT, DTD, Schema, XSL and WML.

This book helped me and my small staff get up to speed on the year 2000 issue. The worksheets and tips were great and the hot links saved us a lot of time by sending us directly to the best sites on the internet. We'd looked at several other offers costing $30 to over a $100, but amazingly this book (which comes on a disk) had better and more up-to-date information and cost a lot less! What a bargain. Thanks to the Y2K Run book, we have done our PC software and hardware inventory and are working on replacing several of our applications. I really liked the contingency planning chapter--it gave us a lot of items we hadn't thought about. The authors know what they are talking about and best of all can explain it to non-technical people.

This is a wonderful book for both children and adult. (except sort of discouraging to see little kid skating that well and doing all the hard moves, like jumping a ramp.) There are great skating maintainence section and all the basic moves.

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments of this author. It is extremely important for young Catholics to take a stand and voice their views amidst the world's prevailing 'cultural relativism.' Amidst the crises of AIDS, homosexuality, and gang-rape, only abstinence will protect children and their families for generations to come.

If anyone says that the church's teachings are bald and aging, please recommend them this article and it will enliven them with a consistent perspective.

Zionism, Racism, and the distortions of the Durban conference.: An article from: Midstream

A fine speech at a ghastly conference

Don't be fooled by the title, which was added by the editor of Midstream. This is basically Michael Melchior's statement to the infamous 2001 Durban Conference "against" racism. This statement was actually delivered on September 3, 2001 by Mordechai Yedid, the head of the Israeli delegation to the conference.

I've often pointed out that although Zionism is Jewish nationalism, it is in fact merely the application of human rights for all to a group of humans (namely the Jews). Well, if that's true, what did Zionists such as Herzl think of human rights for, say, Blacks? Melchior points out that Herzl was strongly in favor of such rights, and that he felt that Jews could empathize with Blacks in this respect as both groups had been slaves and both had been deprived of their rights.

Some folks at Durban pretended that they were "anti-Zionist, not antisemitic" but Melchior shows this to be a lie. He points out the "despicable caricatures of Jews that fill the Arab press and are being circulated at this conference." And he asks about modern ad hoc libels, such as Israel using poison gas, or depleted uranium bullets, or injecting babies with the Aids virus. Are they the same in spirit as ancient blood libels? It sure looks that way to me.

Melchior gets to the root of the problem, namely that today, generations of Arab children "are being deliberately and systematically indoctrinated with textbooks stained with blood libels and children's television programs dripping with hatred." And he reminds the audience that his own cousins, "two little daughters and their brother lost their legs only a few weeks ago in a terrorist attack on a bus carrying children to school." Clearly, the "vicious libels, the delegitimization, and the dehumanization" at the Durban conference will just make matters worse.

Melchior quite rightly fears deeply for the victims of racism. Such people had high hopes for the Durban conference, but instead saw it turn into farce. As he tells us, instead of learning from history, Durban buried history. The conference perverted the values entrusted to it for political ends. And instead of serving the victims of racism, it perpetrated yet another atrocity.

If you're new to HTML, this is the best book I could find. I did some research and even went to a book store and poked through 7 or 8 competing books. Those other authors really couldn't compete.

Pro:
-Written in plain English so anyone can get started
-Each topic is on its own page so you don't have to flip page upon page... truly unique!
-All major topics, from getting started and creating your web page to advanced things like scripts. Also contains debugging tips as well as techniques to help get your page noticed and to increase site traffic
-Unbeatable index and appendices... You'll want to photocopy the "symbols" appendix!
-Fourth edition to me indicates that this book is popular and also likely getting enhancements
-Great use of pictures/visuals
-Even compares different HTML editors and other multimedia tools
-Not long-winded, uses examples to teach you
Con:
-Some very good "freeware" not listed in the comparison section, plus revision number not listed (features can vary a lot in different versions). Note: this is a picky comment on my part as othersdont even offer a section like this
-I do not recall the author giving us perhaps my favorite tip for beginner programmers: visit a page that you like anduse the "view source" command in your browser... So handy for getting ideas!

Bottom line: I think that this book is a must have.

It's hard to believe such a thin book could be so valuable. They only say it once and they say it well. The book is richly cross-referenced and well indexed, so wherever you are, you can page to the right spot for more if you need it. For me, this is the perfect design. I never read a software book front to back. I scan through it to find that one nugget that will get me going again. I'm always learning stuff "that I really don't have time to learn."

Ms. Castro has written this book especially for that style of use. The writing is concise and you can find your way to the topic you need. The examples are very very good and the author has put special care into how well they commmunicate. My favorite is Llumi the cat, who's picture becomes a tiger ("what Llumi is thinking") when you mouseover the photo. Very memorable.

I recieved this book about 3 years ago, not knowing anything about html, and I still use it today. I started out wanting to add a couple things to a web page another program made, now I'm thinking about a whole app. interface. In fact I just realized, I've finally read the whole thing, one bit at a time. Yes, you can read it chapter by chapter and it flows well. But if you're like me, you'll love the way you can find the relevant part, learn what you need to and move on.

Overall, this book is good for beginners and is a good basic reference. It sticks tightly to it's subject, so it doesn't teach Javascript or CGI, other than to explain where they fit in. It makes great use of your time because of the clear concise writing, excellent examples, experience of the author, and rich cross-referencing throughout the book.

I'm now in a spot where "I don't have time to learn" ... CGI. So I'm visiting Amazon looking for a CGI book by Elizabeth Castro based on my experience with this book.
