Mr.Zimmerman's book is a well-written and thorough work suitable for classroom, corporate, and individual use. Broken up into a series of eight learning projects, "Web Page Essentials" imparts a great deal of important information to the reader. Unlike many other technical manuals, however, "Web Page Essentials" is extremely accessible and reader-friendly--objectives and technical terms are clearly spelled out and defined, and individual lessons/tutorials are enhanced with numerous graphics and explanatory captions. "Web Page Essentials" is truly a first-rate educational resource.

High marks from a web designer who STARTED with this book.

This Design Guide was the only reference I used to design my first website, with no prior knowledge of HTML and little understanding of the Internet on the whole. That first site, developed almost three years ago, was simple but successful and has changed little since that time despite changing designers and webmaster several times. The case studies and examples provided are informative and entertaining, and it is written in an easy-to-use format. If you see an example of something you'd like to appropriate for your own design, clear HTML instructions are provided at the end of each section. This is a book that not only offers tips for a beginning developer, but could prove to be useful for a developer who needs to sharpen his/her design skills.

Assesses blame for the failure of "Oslo"

As this article states, a large Israeli peace camp was willing to make major compromises. But this willingness did not lead even to a bogus peace agreement at Camp David or Taba, let alone a genuine one. Well, what went wrong?

In my opinion, there was no peace because the true Arab demand was to abolish Jewish rights in the Middle East. That demand could not be met simply by changing a few borders. It could be supported by making Israel weaker, or by getting some anti-Israeli lies accepted. But it would be sabotaged were Arabs to formally make peace with Israel and leave it on the map.

Some folks decided to say that whatever the reasons for the failure of the peace talks, it must have been Israel's fault. That is absurd, given that Israel was the party that needed peace, not the Arabs. This article summarizes what some of those who blame Israel say, and it rebuts them.

One of those Margalit quotes who refuses to blame the Arab side is Ron Pundak. Pundak laments that the Arabs were "'in a political-psychological state of utter despair.'" However, Margalit notes that the violence starting in September of 2000 took place after unprecedented Israeli offers to concede land, even it the Israeli capital of Jerusalem. That violence did not take place under the Netanyahu administration but under Barak's.

The author concludes that any genuine peace agreement has to maintain Israel's character as a Jewish state, "in accordance with the Wilsonian principle of respect for every nation's right to self-determination." In addition, "Israel's security needs must be given priority." And that the failure of Arabs to agree to this (rather than, say, the Jewish towns in the West Bank) has been the problem.

I'd go further than this. I think a peace agreement has to have some connection to truth, justice, and human rights. It has to ensure that it is consistent with all humans in the region having rights to life, liberty, and property. Still, I recommend this short article. It shows just how unreasonable the arguments are which blame Israel, not the Arabs, for the unprovoked Arab attacks on Israel in 2000.

At a time when many folks are thinking about growing their own food - partly because of increasing cost, and partly because of safety concerns - this article was quite helpful. It's written in plain language, easy to understand and covers all the basics of growing garlic. And the fact that this author was a beginner, made it even more appealing to me. I'd love to see similar articles about growing other vegetables.

Memories and fresh insights into a unique musician who gave so much

It is 30 years since Stokowski's passing, and by now one might reasonably think there is no more to be said about him. Not so! Here we have this fascinating memoir by Janet Frank, a former member of his American Symphony Orchestra, that wonderful ensemble he personally formed and conducted throughout his ninth(!) decade. This is an affectionate, funny, wise, and by no means uncritical firsthand view of what made Stokowski one of the very greatest conductors ever. And the story of the time he divided the orchestra in half -- not for a concert, but for a softball game! -- is a fond reflection of a bygone era, the like of which the world will probably never see again. Bravo Stoki, and brava Janet!
