Although I'm all for capitalism, you should probably be aware of the fact that this article (as with all published articles in Environmental Health Perspectives) is open access--meaning anyone has free access to it. All you need to do is go to their web site (Google:'EHP Tamiflu' and it should be the first hit).

A good summary of the case for supporting democracy

This article is by the author of "The Case for Democracy."
Sharansky addresses three questions he often gets asked. First, is democracy really good for everyone, every culture, and every mentality? Second, isn't it dangerous to fight for democracy? Third, should we impose democracy on others?
Sharansky responds that without democracy, one winds up with a "fear society" in which people are less happy. Such societies are by nature weak, in part because they have to fight against dissent and truth.
In addition, he tells us that while dictatorships may seem appealing if they are our allies, the "stability" they provide is immoral and short-lived. They are simply threats to peace.
Now, should we use troops to impose democracy? Not in general. Sharansky explains that dictatorships are actually rather weak. They can not compete with democracies in the long run. All we need to do is avoid supporting them and they will generally fall from within.
I recommend this short but excellent article.

This is the first peer-reviewed article describing the process for teaching Web-based writing and communication in a college setting.
While it's certainly dated, it still provides a useful historical perspective on the issues and methods used in the business communication classroom.

I subscribe to Jet and read this article. Let me be honest: I think most libraries in the US keep the latest year's worth of Jets. There's easy access to this article. It shows the prince embracing his biracial son. It also has a photo of the mother, who is gorgeous. A separate article said Albert said he was "tricked," but if a middle-aged, rich man can fall for that, he deserves the child support for being so naive (read: stupid!). Unfortunately, the Black Prince won't inherit the throne, but at least he'll get the cha-ching!

Important thinking about counterinsurgency

This brief article in "Military Review" lays out a doctrine for coumnterinsurgency operations that is well worth reading. Eliot Cohen, Conrad Crane, Jan Horvath, and John Nagl are co-authors of this essay. They are participating in (page 7) "a revision of Field Manual (FM) 3.24/MCRP 3-33.5, Counterinsurgency." Thus, this is not just idle chit chat.
They note key principles of counterinsurgency: legitimacy, unity of effort, political primacy, understanding the environment, intelligence as the key driver for operations, isolating insurgents from their cause and support, security under the rule of law, and long-term commitment.
Contemporary imperatives of counterinsurgency are then described. Among these: use measured force (killing a lot of civilians to kill a handful of insurgents only generates more insurgents); learn and adapt (counterinsurgency operations must be based on learning organizations; what worked yesterday won't work tomorrow); empower the lowest levels; support the host nation.
The authors also examine the "paradoxes" of counterinsurgency. Among these: the more you protect your forces, the less secure you are; the more force you use, the less effective you are; sometimes doing nothing is the best response; the best weapons for counterinsurgency don't fire bullets and shells; them doing something poorly may actually be better than us doing it well (and, here, the well known quotation from Lawrence [of Arabia] comes into play [page 5]: "Do not try to do too much with your own hands. Better the Arabs do it tolerably than you do it perfectly."); if a tactic works this week, it won't work next week; tactical success guarantees nothing.
There follows a discussion of implications for the future of counterinsurgency. This brief publication is filled with thought-provoking ideas. Will these ideas work in Iraq now if put into force? Is it too late for them to have an impact? Would these--if implemented in the early days of the invasion--have affected the course of the conflict? Would the United States be in the same mess now if it had followed such a doctrine earlier? We cannot answer those questions, but these do demonstrate how thought-provoking this brief article is.

I've purchased several book books on XML, both in the ASP and ASP.NET environments. They typically wanted you to know everything about XML for its own sake. Well I don't care to learn everything there is to know about XML; I want to know how to use it as part of the ASP.NET arsenal to write better applications. This book does just that. It moves very fast and delivers a very practical how-to guide on using XML in your ASP.NET workday. Wrox at its best!
