HTML Books

I admit it, I sort-of dreaded sitting down and reading a novel on my computer screen. Please don't let this keep you from reading this book. It's as fine as anything I've read in the past several years. The author, who is a very fine reviewer in her own right, really shows that she can spin a captivating, energetic, and above all fun story herself. There are elements of science fiction, mystery, horror, thriller, and comedy all intermixed in this thoroughly entertaining ride. The unexpected twists are worth the price of admission alone. The book itself would make a great movie, and it's got to be one of the greatest bargains available. If you have the slightest interest in science fiction or mystery, you owe it to yourself to grab this book while you still can.
I only have one question, Lisa, when is the sequel coming?

Philly is a typical P.I. type (security consultant) who has retreated far, far from mother Earth. He buys bachelor food-frozen pizza-while flirting with Gina, the cashier at the convenience store. And, at the request of his obsessed neighbor, Percy, he tries to find out who is turning some of the Hades residents into zombies. Against their will. Because plenty are willing to become zombies-after they're dead. Payment is rendered in advance and gives them a comfortable stretch before their not-so-permanent departure from this plane. But when the zombie gangs get you, you don't get paid and you get taken well before you're ready to go.

Then, when Percy gets arrested for breaking into computer files, Philly starts to dig deeper in the case, revealing the darkest side of this darker society.

Author Lisa DuMond has hit the hardboiled nerve peg on, a talent for tone that she combines with her science fiction and horror inclinations, resulting in a novel that's both fun and a real whodunit puzzle book. DuMond is wickedly, but wryly funny, yet keeps the thriller angle coming on strong.

A sci fi horror mystery with overtones of romance, Darkers crosses all the genres but remains accessible to fans of each category of fiction. This is an entertaining story that carefully details a really weird type of place, as a sort of social satire. But the story and its crime tale twists are never left behind, since DuMond vigilantly maintains her focus on the plot-as a mystery author most properly should.

This novel is an armchair-clenching ride. The author combines many of the elements of fantasy, horror, mystery and science fiction into a story that will make you shake your head in wonder, bring a smile to your lips, put a chuckle in your throat and bubble up a laugh from your belly. It's hard to imagine she can do this during a story of murder, serial killing and organ farms. But she does. Our tough-talking gumshoe, Philip Lew, is a fountain of wise-cracks, noxious asides and subtle innuendo -- and he keeps the reader distracted from the horrors he uncovers.

It only took me a few chapters to realize that the novel was an adventure, a puzzle, a snide distraction from the weather, all manner of fun which is sorely missing from many of the titles I read. Grab a copy; you won't find the novel's like anywhere.

This story is a whale of a ride on a Grand Guignol roller coaster through Addams country -- Charles Addams country, located for the purposes of this novel in an environment familiar to people who enjoyed "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Hades as a cracked mirror of modern culture is a fully realized creation of depth and complexity whose fascination is matched only by the intrinsic wry humor of its paradigm.

Phil the protagonist is a great character, a Man With A Past and a Terrible Secret in the mean streets of a surreal world that could almost be described as Kafka-esque if it wasn't for the fact that Kafka is a downer to read, and this is fun. This is great fun. You're gonna like Phil, you're gonna emphathize with his problems, you're going to be glad it's him -- and not you -- running from one end of Hades to the other in pursuit of and being pursued by the Ungodly.

A fun book, engagingly presented in a prose style perfectly matched to its subject matter, "Darkers" is a great way to spend a few hours when you need to get away from it all. This is an absolute romp. Go for it.

Philip Lew is a sharp-tongued sleuth, reminiscent of Archie Goodwin from the old Nero Wolfe detective series, plopped down into the late 21st century. A time when humans have emerged beyond the confines of Earth to colonize an enormous orbitting satellite, and beyond the constraints of ordinary life into the realm of the living dead. Hades, the satellite as cold as its namesake, is populated with cannibalistic creatures of the night; werewolves, vampires and zombies, all courtesy of modern science's new genetic "enhancement" technologies. Life on Hades for a plain old regular human like Lew is dicey at best, and that's before he becomes the target of a station-wide manhunt.

DuMond paints a terrifyingly realistic picture of life among these creatures and the grim station they inhabit. At the same time, her hero Lew is immensely human, flailing desperately to work past his emotional wounds and carve out a meaningful existence (and a meaningful relationship) in a world where the very definition of existence has changed.

Through it all, the striking images of this inverted world and Lew's funny observations at every turn make it good fun reading. From the titillating opening to the gripping conclusion, Lew's irreverent and caustic humor enlivens virtually every sentence of this fast-paced murder mystery thriller. I would have been frightened if I hadn't been laughing so hard. Don't miss this one!

I found this book to be a great way to become familiar with the range of issues that come to bear on incorporating graphics into a web page. Despite the exclusive use of Photoshop in the examples, the concepts are explained in such a way that makes it easy to identify the same graphic-editing techniques needed to be used with other software such as Paint Shop Pro, my graphic editor of choice. Good clear explanations and excellent examples do a great job of illustrating how "tweaking" things like the color depth and color pallete affect file sizes, download times, and picture quality. Originally, I kept renewing this book from my local library until I finally just bought my own copy. A great book!

Although the book is oriented around Photoshop on the Mac (which is even better if you use a Mac), the concepts are universal. The book is visually pleasing, very informative (especially on graphic formats), and an inexpensive way to get started

The book is deceptive. The author makes it seem simple. In fact she packs in a lot of very cogent points whilst retaining a friendly style. Great for anyone starting out in graphics for the Web (though it does more or less assume you will be using Photoshop).

I found this book by accident in the library when I was starting the process of designing our office's web site. Because I was a rank beginner to the world of web design (although I knew the PC, Windows 98, Microsoft Office, FrameMaker, PageMaker and a little Photoshop), I needed some hand-holding to get my feet wet. This book was better than anything else I found for that task.

There are other web design books I like (like Roger Black's book on Adobe Press) but this is the best one I have seen for the person who literally knows nothing about the topic.Yes, it was written in 1996 and is somewhat dated for the person who wants to be cutting edge, but you have to crawl before you can run, and this book got me through the crawling stage so I could start to feel comfortable with the concepts I would need to work with my Adobe (and now Macromedia) software.

The writing style is crisp and clean and right to the point. I read it in three hours.

Try this book if you don't know anything about web design, then take a look at Roger Black for one designer's viewpoint on design issues. Once you have those two books under your belt, the author's latest book, Web Design in a Nutshell, would be a great next step.

This is Dr. Mellors third book on programming in the "Learning by Example" series. The DHTML book lives up to the standard of the first two (ASP and XML). As usual the book comes complete with web support (download the codes). It is concise and clearly written, with all examples clearly explained and increasing in complexity throughout the book. Covers CSS, DOM and JavaScript, both alone and in combination (dynamic scripting). Well worth the price!

This book (and indeed all of the books in the "Learning by Example" series) are simply great for people in the education branch. They are ready-made courses with web support. The style is streamlined, the examples are simple but are logically build up, so that by the end quite a high level of complexity is achieved. Why waste time developing your own material when this is difficult to beat, and costs only pennies!

I don't know that I can add much to what the other reviewers have said, except that the book is very very well written and even the complicated techniques appear to be easy and logical. The book has a nice flow, building up stepwise in complexity. With the codes (downloaded from the web support) to help, then you can't really go wrong.

The book provides good overview on the ebXML architecture, and gives lots of business case examples. I highly recommend this book for business manager looking into implementing ebXML and web services in their company.

My company is just starting to look at ebXML for handling b2b transactions. I'm familiar with XML but really needed a quick primer to get me up-to-speed on the essentials of ebXML. This book is very clearly written to guys like me--it covers the basics very clearly, with good examples. Now I am ready to get my company rolling with ebXML.

This book really helped me build on what I already knew in order to get a handle on ebXML. The author does a great job of showing how ebXML builds on XML standards, and also how ebXML relates to Web Services, which I'm just starting to get a handle on. It provides good technical detail on the ebXML architecture, and gives lots of business case examples and reasonable guidelines for developing a strategy for staging implementation of ebXML. Coverage of security and the other major specs is very complete and readable--I highly recommend this book!

Rori Mason knows what an abomination men are from first hand experiences. The rejection by her beloved Nate for another woman and ultimately a decade wasted with an abuser provided empirical data to Rori what the traits of the Y chromosome are. After vowing no men, Rori earns income ironically as a stripper.

Life uses love to orchestrate a cosmic satire that Rori knows makes her the butt of the joke as she encounters Nate for the first time since he deserted her. To her chagrin and shame, Rori still loves Nate even though he married someone else. Nate's wife is dead and he raises their daughter alone while ministering to a small flock of worshippers. Nate learns where Rori is performing and soon realizes he needs her in his life permanently. She treats him with disdain to hide her true feelings that mistrust coincides and shares her heart with her love of him.

FALLING STAR is a wonderful contemporary romance that hooks the readers because of the delightfully humanistic lead female protagonist. Though Nate is a wonderful person and his daughter precocious, Rori owns the novel chapter, page, and word. Readers will admire her for she refuses to allow life's left hooks to keep her down on the canvas. Fans of a warm second chance at love tale starring people readers will cherish should read Karen Weisner's beautiful book one of the Angelfire trilogy and obtain the other two novels, FIRST LOVE and FOREVER MAN, as soon as possible as this reviewer plans to do.

The first thing that strikes you about "Growing the Distance" is its unique format and layout. Unlike many books written strictly for business, this publication is alive with style, relevant quotations, humorous quips and interesting fonts. Whereas beauty is only skin deep, this book has helpful and attractive information from cover to cover. Author Jim Clemmer is the founder and president of The CLEMMER Group, a strategic consulting firm. Jim is a best selling author, workshop/retreat leader, and keynote speaker on organization improvement, leadership development, and personal effectiveness. Clemmer presents the values and philosophy he models to others in this fine book.

One of the main messages that clearly jumps out at the reader is this powerful theme...leadership and change is a living philosophy that must permeate every aspect of life including family, career, personal responsibility and self-fulfillment. Jim starts the book with the point that too many development books are "like a pair of steer horns--a point here and a point there, with a whole lot of bull in between." When you are finished with this book, you won't be asking "Where's the beef?" I liked his philosophy of using quotes throughout the text, "If I couldn't have said it better myself, I won't make you wade through pages of text to prove it." And he didn't!

I picked up this book as I was thinking of my professional growth, but found the principles even more applicable at home in my role as father. I learned along side my children how to keep our rate of internal growth faster than external change so we won't be victims. Now my kids use Jim's comments of not getting "The Victimitis Virus" and staying out of "Pity City".

If this were a novel, reviewers would be saying things like "fast-paced," "exciting," and "inspirational."

This book connects leadership, personal growth and success in life in a format designed for easy reading and high impact. Although I actually read the books I'm asked to review, not just scan for content, I've found some books can't be read straight through because they aren't designed for it. "Growing The Distance" is one of those. It is in digest format, a collection of short, short articles that follow a common theme, each building on the prior articles to form a coherent book. Each article also is able to stand alone without reference to the others. Thus, you can explore the ideas in the book at random, sampling here and there according to your attraction to a title.

And, it is preferable to read this book by scanning and sampling. Each "article" has so much condensed meaning that you need to stop and think about the ideas, anecdotes and quotations within. Like eating peanuts, you keep going back and nibbling some more.

I've grown tired of business books that have good lessons but don't inspire me.

Jim's book IS NOT one of those.
It is fresh and inspiring. I really like the writing style.

I read this book several years ago when I first got in to web design. This book was so easy to follow and clear to understand that it only took me a few days of reading before I was able to build my first web site. While this book is a little old by technology standards, the information it has about HTML is still valid and current.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning HTML.

A good primer on HTML and web publishing in general, if you don't want to get too deep. The tags are laid out clearly, and the methods to achieve certain looks or feels are plainly illustrated, but the book doesn't teach that much theory, so you are generally stuck with the methods they teach. Some of the methods are somewhat non-standard, which worries me, but as a whole the book is sound and easy to read. I would recommend _HTML 4 for the Worldwide Web_, by Elizabeth Castro, instead. It is very clear and basic, but it covers more of the theory so you can be a more powerful designer.

This book is so wonderful! I thought the "For Dummies" series would be easy enough, but I've found those types of books often have excess information I really don't care about. I will be taking a class in a few weeks that requires knowledge of HTML, so I needed to learn it easily, and quickly. I'm the type of individual who learns best in bulleted or outlined lists and HTML In An Instant is laid out just this way.

The book is setup perfectly and takes you from the basic concepts HTML structure, all the way up to Java applications. It's not too big and is consistently formatted throughout.

I had previously purchased the Visual Quickstart series and quickly found out these are not so "quick." Frustrated, I finally just sat down in a Borders and pulled out several HTML books and selected this one. I can't rave about it more....

This book is good well designed for someone who has not time to cut through a text book just to find a simple way of coding one thing in HTML. The pictures are clear and precise. You can have a website or any other HTML document up and working before you have to learn the theory behind it. Even for experts a quick reference can help. This book is also the basics behind all the extended languages. Some people use the skills learned in this book just to make their Discussion Boards more colorful and add the dimension of pictures and sound.

There are thicker books out there but none so graphic.

It is exactly what I was looking for. I have VB experience but am new to HTML. The whole book is examples of code with screen shots of how a web page would appear. It even goes into creating classes, style sheets, and adding Javescript. It is a good reference for someone with experience (I have had developers borrow mine) and simplistic enough for a beginner. I definatly recommend it.

This is a best book I have ever seen. It has every details about how to use the iText. It's very clear in every technical aspects. iText is also a great API for Java programmer. It's also really easy to learn. I love iText.

This is a great book for people developing or maintaining applications using iText. It covers every corner-case I've run into, typically offering various options on how to solve a problem. The writing is concise, with easily approachable chapters and examples.

In January 2006 I was assigned to build a system that would create lots of PDF reports, typically with hundreds of pages of tables, and with tables nested in other tables. I started with an an open-source tool called BIRT that is well-designed and powerful, but it didn't quite give me sufficient low-level control over some aspects of PDF creation. When I realized that BIRT wasn't going to work for me, I was behind schedule and in trouble. Then I discovered iText. (BIRT actually is built using iText jar files.) I found that iText gave me exactly what I needed: an easy-to-use yet powerful Java API for creating PDF files. The remainder of the project, using iText, went smoothly, and my boss was very happy with the results. But I sure wish that I'd had Bruno Lowagie's "iText in Action" book at the time! That would have shaved a few weeks off of the project and would have saved me from learning some things painfully, by trial and error. As the original developer of iText, Bruno Lowagie is uniquely qualified to write this book. He obviously put a huge amount of effort into it, reflecting his longstanding commitment to iText. He made every effort to explain things as clearly as possible, and to document the pitfalls as well as the attractive features. It is evidently a labor of love for him. The book is written to the high editorial standards of other Manning books, with clear organization, good typography and layout, and so on. I highly recommended iText itself, and also this book, to anyone who is using Java to work with PDF files.

This is nice book, though most of the contents can be found online (I believe it is linked from the author's website). I have created some complex PDF files using iText following the examples on the book and online tutorials. This is the book from iText creator, surely it worth a 5 starts.

I've always figured that there should be some way to create PDF files without the manual effort of any 3rd party software client. Now I find out there is a way, and it's rather exciting... iText In Action by Bruno Lowagie covers the iText open source software project. It's a very well done reference manual that can also serve as a tutorial for a decent Java developer.

Lowagie starts off with a brief background of how iText came into being, along with a scenario of where the ability to programmatically create PDF files could dramatically change the way a college would run a department. Then after a short Hello World example that involves creating a simple document, he delves into all the different features and capabilities. The book at this point starts to change from tutorial to reference manual, but it's done in such a way that you could just keep working through the material in tutorial fashion with little effort (and good results). The example code in all the chapters are extensively annotated and explained, so you're not left to your own devices to try and figure out what the logic is trying to accomplish. In fact, I would say that the code annotation and commentary is some of the best I've seen in a book of this type. Great job...

The main target audience for this book is the Java developer, as the iText project is Java-based. There are .NET ports for J# and C#, and knowing how close those languages are to Java, this book should work pretty well for those development efforts with a little bit of thought and modification. Other languages should be able to use the iText toolkit if they have some way to call Java code modules from within their programs. As a Notes/Domino developer, I should be able to utilize all of this package in any Java agents I write, and the LS2J feature of LotusScript might also work well. After reading this book, I know I have some things I need to try...

If you have any sort of need involving the creation of PDF files from within your own system, iText is a great alternative to explore. And if that seems to be the way to go, I don't know of any better book to get than this one...

Trying to learn useful things about XML can be hard. XML is so flexible and can be used for so many things, descriptions of it have a bad tendency to be vague, never touching the real world. Or they are too detailed and technical to easily understand. This book has a really nice balance of these factors. For example, if you want to know what a web service is, and want to see an actual example of one without an overwhelming amount of technical detail, this book is a good place to look. You can see the code and what's actually needed to implement it.

As a strategic decision maker in the software development industry, transitioning into XML based technologies is at the top of my priority list. Strategic XML provides a very good introductory through advanced study of the topic. The author not only educates the reader from an academic perspective, but goes in depth with real world examples. He actually goes one step further and points the reader toward suitable tools and development platforms. For anybody moving into (or already in the midst of) joining the XML world, I would highly recommend giving Strategic XML a read.

I love this book, it's not your average learn to build a CD or Book database in XML. If you want to learn the XML, buy a generic fat red book with the lots of faces on it, if you want to learn how to apply the XML to practical situations, get this one. It's not going to take you years to read and the selection of applicable quotes at the start of each make it quite amusing and exciting. Add a bit of method to your madness, buy this book and apply a Software Engineer's approach to your data modelling.

I really liked this book. It gave me some very good insight into how to use the XML I have been learning for the past 2 years. It is not filled with a lot of useless rehash of XML primer material, it has a real nice review/overview of the technology and then focuses on the real issue of how to use it to solve business problems. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who doesn't need a 600 page regurgitation of XML basics, but instead is focused on solving problems with an exciting technology!

I initially read this book because I know the author and I promised him I would. I'm not a programmer but I am responsible for the technical direction of my company. Suprisingly, the book was written in plain enough English to give me a good general understanding of how to use XML, SOAP, Web Services etc. I'm passing it on to my programming department as a primer to start getting us up speed on these technologies.

"If this were a Harlequin it would have to fit into the Blaze line. In other words, hang on to your arm chair, this borders on erotica. Not because of the love scenes so much as the tremendous age difference and shocking situations. Well written, worth a read especially if you like the steamier romances."

"They say "save the best for last." It's definitely true in this case. The last was absolutely the best for Karen Wiesner's Gypsy Road series. This book had me choked up and ready to cry far too many times, and I find myself wanting to pick it up and read it again. (Yes, I know it's an e-book, but it's on my Rocket eBook reader so I CAN pick it up. (Bet you were trying to picture me juggling my tower, keyboard and monitor...) I was right when I said that if Jon was that intense of a character, Blackie would be something else. He was phenomenal. Talk about deep issues! And Lori-she wasn't the pure, innocent heroine we normally get (she was a wild teenager); she was actually easier to identify with and feel for. Karen Wiesner writes deep, gritty characters-- real people--not the usual "perfect" people, and she does it well. Get this series and enjoy it, guys, and I'd recommend getting disk copies rather than downloads-you want these for your keeper shelf!
