Value package of three excellent books
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-26
This boxed set contains three books that have been published in December 2001 and represent the essentials for anyone who is working with XML and web services.

The books are:

(1) CHARLES F. GOLDFARB'S XML HANDBOOK by Charles F. Goldfarb and Paul Prescod. Goldfarb invented SGML, upon which XML is based and which had a significant influence on the design of HTML. At 1200 pages this book is probably one of the most complete references that one can have. It covers every conceivable topic, ranging from a good description of XML and how it evolved from SGML, to semantic web and web services (each of which are disciplines onto themselves).

Expected topics are given in-depth treatment (XML, schemas, DTDs, datatypes, XSLT, XSL-FO, XLink, XPath, XPointer, XSDL, namespaces, topic maps, RDF, SOAP, UDDI, WSDL and VoiceXML), with a focus on the following:
- integration of XML and the older EDI approaches to e-commerce and extended supply chain systems
- a sound approach to content management
- how XML fits into the web services framework
- chapters on important topics such as portals, databases, content acquisition, conversion and publishing
- a series of chapters devoted to tutorials on XML basics, schemas, and transformation and navigation protocols

In addition this book comes with two CD ROMs that are packed with applications such as IBM's AlphaWorks suite and NeoCore XMS Native XML Database (Personal Edition). A trial version of TurboXML IDE & Schema Editor is also included among the 175 programs on the CD ROM set.

This is an overwhelming book for beginners, but is a valuable resource for anyone who is deeply involved in web services, XML and related technologies. If you fit the latter category this is probably the only XML reference you'll need.

(2) DEFINITIVE XML SCHEMA by Priscilla Walmsley. In a nutshell this book gives a detailed description of the XML schema and associated topics. The author is a member of the W3C working group that created XML Schema, and the material in this book is consistent with W3C recommendations. See the editorial description and reviews on this book's product page for specifics.

(3) DEFINITIVE XSLT AND XPATH by G. Ken Holman. Covers everything you need to know about transforming information structured vocabularies and output formats. The author is the chair of OASIS's XSLT/XPath Conformance Technical Subcommittee. See the editorial description and reviews on this book's product page for specifics.

What's not included in this set, but worth getting is DEFINITIVE XML APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT by Lars Marius Garshol. However, "The Definitive XML Professional Toolkit" will provide you with a solid foundation of the basics as well as software tools that you can evaluate as candidates for your own development environment.

Delivering Push (Hands-on Web Development)
Published in Paperback by Computing Mcgraw-Hill (1997-11)
Author: Ethan Cerami
List price: $49.95

Average review score:

An excellent guide to an overhyped technology
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-24
Delivering Push delivers. This guide presents information for both users and developers, though I found the information for developers most useful. Unlike most of the media treatments that pushed push as the next big thing, this book stops to consider what push technologies might actually be good for.

Excellent Article!

By coincidence, Ms. Swenson's moving and articulate article has the same title as my recently published book. The two works are similar memoirs of what it's like to be the caregiver of an aging parent with dementia. Ms. Swenson's article is a touching account told from the heart by the author, a professional social worker. It brings together in clear and vivid language the objective perspective of the professional and the personal perspective of a daughter-in-law. I recommend it highly.

Desired Track: The Tragic Flight of KAL 007. (book reviews): An article from: ETC.: A Review of General Semantics
Published in Digital by International Society for General Semantics (1996-12-22)
Author: Martin H. Levinson
List price: $5.95
New price: $5.95

Average review score:

After this detailed analysis, Kal 007 flight is no more a mistery.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-04
The book Desired Track shows by analyzing undisputed facts that the "official story" cannot explain the fate of Kal 007 flight.
It has willingly flown its actual course and USA defense and intelligence structures monitored in real-time its flight.
The transcripts of the black boxes, released and decifred 10 years after the crash, are at odds with existing recordings of air traffic control tapes of the last minutes of the flight.
The only mistery is not how, but why it was flown in such a way and why the knowledge of its actual flight path has been buried until now by those who were demanded to control the skies.
This book is a must to be read for anyone that wants to know what really happened on that night of 1983, between August 31 - September 1st.

Destination maintenance: why Sedona needs Schnebly Hill. (Schnebly Hill Road, Sedona, Arizona): An article from: Cornell Hotel & Restaurant Administration Quarterly

Taking Care of Diamonds
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-07
I co-wrote this article with Dr. Larry Yu and Edgar Medweth. It has been 11 years since its publication and you need to see Schnebly Hill now! The Coconino National Forest finally took steps to protect Sedona from the influx of people who wanted to "love it to death". It took a good three years from this publication's date until the public meetings and new decisions followed and the dust settled. Ultimately overnight camping in non-campgrounds (dispersed camping) was eliminated in the central Sedona region. This made the big change that saved Schnebly Hill Road and Sedona's public lands. The concept and value of Destination Maintenance still stands tall. The desire to promote a place without planning for the resultant changes that could follow has destroyed many fine destinations.

The Semantic Web embraces a complex of technologies, concepts, good practices and procedures, and finally is a soup of acronyms, new terms, specialise terminology, etc.

This book is an excellent source of information about semantic web because is a real dictionary about XML and Semantic Web. Every entry in the dictionary is very well explained and almost every entry has a diagram, an illustration or an example.

Poetry beyond the printed page
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-21
If twentieth-century art managed to carve new possibilities for painting, sculpture, and music, it was by dropping the ideological baggage of narrative, says Loss Pequeño Glazier in Digital Poetics, and writing may be the last theater of this confrontation.

The digital medium is a real and present form of writing, one that has changed the idea of writing itself, he says. The web is now part of a transformed social fabric and writing will never be the same again.

Glazier founded and directs the Electronic Poetry Center (EPC) at SUNY Buffalo. He brings enormous erudition and great passion to this subject to challenge whatever notions we may have of 'poetry' and whatever notions we may have of communication technology.

E-poetry consists of innovative poetic practices in various digital media: It's writing/programming that engages the procedures of poetry to investigate the materiality of language, Glazier says. He cautions that one cannot assume that because a work is in digital format it is by definition digitally innovative.

Digital poetry, or e-poetry, includes a number of specific qualities. These include:
* works that cannot be adequately delivered via traditional paper publishing or cannot be displayed on paper.
* texts with certain structural or operative forms not reproducible in paper or in any other non-digital medium (works employing hyperlinks, kinetic elements, multi-layered features, programmable elements, and events).
* digital media works that have some relation to twentieth-century innovative practices.
