I love this book. All the normal religious mumbo jumbo is missing from this book. This book is about a new process of partner assisted meditation called a "Dyad". Meditation alone is not enough to break down sterotypes and mind games. The properly trained partner can help in the navigation to the true inner self. The Dyad process is used at 3 day Enlightenment Intensives to reach personal bedrock truth. This well written book will allow you to understand Enlightenment Intensives on a practical level that you can use and not just read about. This book is what our culture has needed for years.

Gliding on the most productive and smoothest learning curve of Derivatives
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-02
This is the most enjoyable and productive book on derivatives, of course if you love the subject. It is no doubt that the subject is very complicated, especially if you lack college-level math-skill. This might be the best approach, particularly for end-users of various kind of risk management tools and products. Still, for more advanced individuals, this concept oriented collections of well threaded essays could be used as the mirror to check your radical understandings on the subject. I bet you will find many of your long held fundamentals be challenged or even revised thus facilitating your potential advancement on fully utilizing this prevalent indespensable risk management tools.

In shorts, it is ideal to be your second readings after your favorite basic finance texts and the great companion to any derivatives related text at whatever levels you plan to invest your (generally, lots of) valuable time in. You will experience a much steeper and higher learning curve and probably the most productive one. Derivatives will never be made this easy to study, Dr Chance has done the excellent job and thus contribution to the wide community of derivative-related learners.

A great resource . . . an ever better read

Review Date: 2008-07-23
Over the years, when I have looked at a "framing square", I have been put in mind of going to the beach and seeing a guy wearing a tiny, lime green Speedo. The connection may not seem apparent at first, but as to the inadequately clothed male, I shake my head and think, "There are 11 men in America who might qualify to look right in that miniscule patch of lycra or spandex . . . . unfortunately, he is not one of them."

When I have looked at a framing square with all the numbers, hash marks, dots, and seemingly inscrutable sets of fractions, I shake my head and think, "There are only 11 craftsmen in America who qualify to actually make total sense and proper use of that instrument . . . unfortunately, I'll never be one of them."

I'm sure I will never be qualified to wear a Speedo. I am even more certain I will never be qualified to fully understand or use a framing square. Further, I anticpate the company of folk ever to have been so qualified in terms of the framing square has never been large in number. Sadly, that number is growing ever smaller as digital tools, hand-held computers, and software capable of near-instant-calculations continue to crop up in the construction trades and woodworkers' shops.

Before the framing square slips into antique and woodworking memorabilia emporia, take the time to read and enjoy Ken Horner's Essential Guide to the Steel Square. An intention to use a square (whether it be a try square, combination square, speed square, or otherwise) for anything other than marking lines or simply checking your woodcuts for "square", is not a necessary prerequisite for reading and enjoying this book.

This book is part history lesson, part instruction manual, part puzzle solver, and all terrific. It's value is to be measured by much more than the sum of its parts. Whether you want to know how to estimate board feet, lay out stairs, compute complex compound angles for roofing rafters, draw a circle, find the radius of an arc, compute the dimensions of an elliptical hole through a pitched roof necessary to accept a round pipe, or even measure the height of that big red oak in the backyard, you will learn how to do it all in simple step-by-step instructions.

Not interested or in need of such eye-opening information for actual application? Then just read, or at least thoroughly browse, the book for pure joy, entertainment, and appreciation. If you need the information, you will be hard pressed to find a better, clearer, more easily applicable resource. If you don't need the information (that's me) read the book and you will find yourself sharing the secrets of the square with friends just for kicks.

Nope, don't know Ken Horner; don't get anything else out of this review than the excitement of passing along good news.

Even experienced woodworkers will learn something!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

I have roughly a decades worth of serious experience in woodworking and use both hand and power tools. Besides enjoying woodworking, I also like to learn more about techniques of woodworking. I bought this book based upon a review by Christopher Schwartz of Lost Art Books. It is very informative and spells out many techniques, basic and otherwise, needed for woodworking and does so in simple straightforward terms.
This includes how to tune your handplane and chisels, how to lay out joints, how to make several pieces of furniture with the intent of building upon that experience for bigger and better projects down the road, and other aspects of woodworking.
The book now costs $70 dollars. However, it is money well spent for those just entering the world of woodworking as well as those with prior experience! I learned several new ideas from the book and that makes it worthwhile to me!

Many topics covered, some chapters are a little weak
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

This is a good book to learn about Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs or also called DEAs or Iterated DEAs). These algorithms are similar to evolutionary algorithms, but do not use the crossover or mutation operators of evolutionary search. EDAs instead create a probabilistic model of good solutions and use the model to generate new search points. It's a nifty idea and it works.

Most of the chapters of this edited collection were authored or coauthored by the editors. So, algorithms developed by other people do not get a lot of attention. However, the editors (or is it the authors) manage to include chapters on combinatorial, continuous, and discrete optimization.

There is a section on machine learning applications that is OK, but the last chapter on training neural nets with EDAs is very weak (look ma I used this and it worked...). Except for this chapter, the rest of the chapters in this section use careful experiments and statistics to make their points.

Making the source code available would have improved things and would make it easier for people to try these algorithms.

Professor Lawerance H. Keeley research into Microwear Analysis is brilliant. A pioneer in this field. Out side of Archaeologist and Anthropologist few people realize just how much information can be obtain about the past by studying ancient stool tools. One can determine the use of Stool Tools from studying the flint tools under magnification of 100's to 400's, the polishes, striations and breakage patterns. Its amazing to me studying these tools and the technologies of ancient man. A important discovery was the correlation between detail patterns of microwear on flint tool edges and the material worked by that edge. I love this book! It is a great resource for my research.
