I newly purchased this book. Intuitevely you will get into memorising cuneiform characters with the help of this workbook. Without noticing I have come to find that I have memorised nearly 40 cuneiforms in a day. I wish some more advanced workbooks such as this would be published to assist us to progress into becoming full scribes. I fully recommend.

A practical and well-designed workbook for beginners.

A WORKBOOK OF CUNEIFORM SIGNS. Aids and Research Tools in Ancient Near Eastern Studies No.3. By Daniel C. Snell. 140 pp. Malibu : Undena Publications, 1979. ISBN 0-890003-058-8 (pbk.)

The author tells us that the idea for this workbook came from the 'Japanese Kana Workbook' by P. G. O'Neill (Palo Alto and Tokyo : Kodansha International 1967), a highly successful workbook for teaching the Japanese syllabary.

Snell's cuneiform workbook gives a similar course of programmed instruction that teaches the 110 most frequently used cuneiform signs. It teaches the standard Neo-Assyrian sign forms, and a method encouraging active use of the signs is presented on the grounds that an active knowledge of the signs will stay with the student longer.

The signs are divided into eight sections. Each section contains step-by-step exercises and ends with a quiz reviewing all the signs presented. Two appendices provide an alphabetic list of values taught and a list of the signs.

The 'Workbook' is designed for home study by students in beginning Akkadian classes and provides a practical and systematic introduction to the cuneiform writing system. It should be used in conjunction with R. Labat's 'Manuel d'Epigraphie akkadienne' (5th ed., Paris : Geuthner, 1976).

The book measures 8.5 by 11.0 inches, is well-printed on strong paper, and is bound in a sturdy wrapper. In both design and procedure it follows O'Neill's popular and highly effective 'Kana Workbook' very closely.

Snell's 'Workbook' is an excellent book which achieves what it sets out to do. Since it covers only 110 signs, it won't of course turn the user into a full-fledged scribe. But it will be of value to beginners in cuneiform, and it should help dispel some of the mystery which surrounds the beautiful but complicated cuneiform signs.

The Easiest Way To Learning Cuneiform

I agree with the previous comments.
I'm trying to learn Akkadian with the help of Huehnergard's excellent Grammar of Akkadian, and know very little of cuneiform.
Snell's workbook does not teach you grammar but is very easy to use on its own as an aid to reading and writing cuneiform, drills you little by little (one sign at a time), can be read in snatches on your spare time, does not have pretensions , and, all in all, is well-produced.
The book looms larger than its price (though I got it from a different seller).

This book really helped me when I was first opening up to the idea that our thoughts and beliefs create our reality. It explains everything in such a clear way. Reading it was like having a life couch to give me guidance and faith (in print.) Now, over a decade later, I still refer back to it from time to time when I need some inspiration and reinforcement about my path, how to view difficult situations, or decision-making. I have read many, many spiritual-based books that contain these principles, but this is one of the few that really stands out. It has lots of really creative exercises for those who like them, but even if you don't do any of them, the book is just as valuable. Personally, I do not understand why this book never became "big."

For anyone seeking this type of material, I also highly recommend The Power of Now and the Sanaya Roman books (specifically Creating Money, Spiritual Growth, and Personal Power Through Awareness.)

A wonderful gift for yourself or your loved ones.

This book is incredible; it has given me clear and effective strategies for transforming negative self-criticism into positive, transformative visualizations. The accompanying CD allows you to get started with this wonderful process before you even turn a single page. I have given the book to family members who have also loved it.

The best stress busting material!!!

Margo Adair's book is such a mind opener. It gave me some simple concrete examples of how to calm my life. It's incredible how her exercises not only help me to feel good, but also help clear my mind so that I can find room to develop different solutions to some of my more pressing problems. I keep going back to it often. The CD is the most helpful. I listen to it while cleaning or driving. It's great to do the exercises on the CD when I need to just sit and focus my attention to what's happening at present.

The innovation of using imagination for creating solutions to everyday or stressful problems has won my devotion.
Any person who is seriously looking for ways to get in touch with themselves in a very productive way should read this book.

Practical information for solving familiar problems

The information contained in this book shows how the familiar stories of the prophets can be used in a practical manner to address the problems we face in our day to day lives. This book is excellent for someone who is familiar with these stories from a biblical or a quranic perspective. It also sheds light on islams fundamental principles and practices and how they are expressed to improve ones self, family and community.

Does the solution to fixing Islam's current problems lie within the Quran itself? "A Worthy Muslim: Quranic Tools Needed to Overcome Oppression and Imperialism in Order to Institute Justice" is a treatise written by author Amir Makin, preaching that the solutions to the problems that the Muslim world experiences can be repaired - if Muslims would only look more closely at what the Quran truly states. With other controversial viewpoints, such as the potential claim that Islam is not in fact a religion, "A Worthy Muslim: Quranic Tools Needed to Overcome Oppression and Imperialism in Order to Institute Justice" is highly thought-provoking and recommended for community library Islamic studies collections as well as for any student of Islam looking for fresh insights.

Knowing how to apply knowledge correctly is called wisdom.

To me, that is one of the best lines in this book. I am not Muslim, yet that fact was no hindrance in following this thought provoking book.

Being African American and female, my knowledge of Islam was mostly gleaned from news stories and sound bites from or about Louis Farrakhan and bin Laden. Although I knew, logically, that I was not getting the whole picture, I was not interested enough to investigate further.

That's why I'm so thankful for this book. The author explains the tenets of Islam and gives VERIFIABLE historic evidence to prove his points. He uses clear examples to state that true Islam does not tolerate prejudice or self grandiosness. He explains how greed and selfishness lead to oppression and injustice and how learning and applying Islamic principles could eliminate society's ills. And you don't have to be Muslim to understand, appreciate, or apply some of these principles.

Reading this book exposed me to just how much I DIDN'T know about Islam.
Thanks to the author for the word list with definitions. I never lost my train of thought looking up an unfamiliar word.

I found this to be a helpful guide to Muslim culture. It left me with lingering thoughts and some questions: Would a Muslim state or gov't as defined by the author be tolerant and accepting of other religions? What to do with leaders/citizens whose Islamic practices are different?

A cooking bible can be so helpful when it comes to unusual ingredients, and cooking techniques. I have often been left wondering, and been forced to go through multiple sources to find out information on a particular ingredient. For example did you know Cilantro is also known as Chinese Parsley?

Jeni Wright makes a book that is made for the kitchen. The cover of the book can be wiped off from splashes and splatters, as the cover was designed for use in the kitchen. I like that with each entry, she will tell you how to choose the ingredient, what it will taste like, how to store it, its preparation, and what it can be used for. Often small recipes are given to have demonstrate the use of the ingredient.

The book also spends much time going over meat of many varieties and dairy products. When covering the meat, she tells you about the different cuts of meat, what they should be ideally, and then how to prepare these cuts. A few recipes are given as well so you can prepare food. When it comes to the poultry she gives all of the information about cuts, what they should look like ideally, and how to prepare, but she also spends time telling you how to cut up a chicken, duck, and even pheasant.

21st Century Cook is a wonderful book packed with all sorts of information. With this book, I can easily find information about techniques and ingredients. I like that she covers the common, and not so common techniques and ingredients. This book would be a great addition to anyone's cooking library.

I was pleased to find a book that addressed the practical concerns of Americans moving to France. My husband and I vacation in France each year and want to live there part of the year when we retire. This book was the first I've found that addresses issues like taxes, insurance, buying property and the relative cost of living. We have rented houses in the countryside, and I found that most of the observations and advice are right on with our experience. Although the author obviously loves France, the downside of moving there was presented as well as the many wonderful things about daily life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering spending an extended period in France.
