It was AWESOME!!! It was so original, for manga. Most mangas are about some japanese super-hero who falls in love with a girl... blah, blah, blah... or else theyre about teens in school... Wh00t! come on ppl we go to school everyday! Beck, however, showed the life of an average kid, not a, super-hero or a perfect-bodied high-school kid. No, Beck is about the music BEHIND those perfect-bodied people. IT'S ABOUT ROCK AND ROLL!!! WOOHOOO!!!!Watever. i love manga, so im probably prejudice. Beck was great and i cant wait for the second one. YOU'LL LOVE IT!!! in fact im gonna go read it again... hmmm... :)

Beck is a great series

Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad is a must read for all Manga or Music lovers. I must warn you though the first 4 or 5 volumes are progress quite slowly but after that the series becomes highly addictive. I pulled an all nighter just to read the first 19 volumes.

The series is still on going in Japan. The 23rd volume will released in Japan in July. Harold Sakuishi is a brilliant storyteller and he throws in tons of real life refrences in the series, like the osbournes in one the pages in the series.

I know Tokyopop did a good job with bringing it over to North America becuase they hired the translator who were doing the scanlations of Beck. For those of you who do not know what scanlation is, It is when people scan the japanese manga and translate it into another language and release it for people to read. I could go on and on about how good the series is but you have to read it in order to believe it.

Thorough text at intelligent level

I'm just through reading the first half of Vol. 1, but I am so far impressed with its thoroughness and clarity. When I looked at other biology text books for self-study, many seemed padded with extraneous material and gimmicks. Worse, these texts talked down to the reader. "Biological Sciences" is not chatty in a forced attempt to be 'relevant' but instead makes demands on the reader without being willfully obscure. Even better, the pages are not full of fashionable white space, but packed with text. The only caveat I have is that since 1996, surely many developments have cropped up since this last edition. But for basics, this is top notch.

This book is a treasure. I used it several years ago as a sophomore in high school to prepare for the AP Examination in Biology. Wonderfully illustrated, exceptionally written, and very easy to use!

I got a "5" on the exam, which is the highest score attainable... I think that speaks for itself!

This is a really great book, which seems to cover all the areas of California law. I've referred to the book on several occasions and have found my answer each time. The analysis was very understandable and the book gave me a strong background so I understood the law. In some cases the book told me the best approach to take to achieve whichever result I wanted. The author's approach is very practical and useful. It's a great book and a valuable reference that has really made a difference for me in several situations.

Excellent real estate resource text

Mr. Gordon's book, California Real Estate Law, is an excellent reference for the homeowners, for investors and for brokers. It covers more than just plain law, as the author includes his tips and tricks learned from his experiences as an attorney and as a broker. Sometimes it is just as important to know what the law is as to know when to use the law. The book was surprisingly readable. Some books on law are so confusing or technical as to be useless and others are so simple that they don't provide enough law to know what you're doing. Gordon's book is a good example of something done right.

It seems to cover the whole field of real estate law, from neighbors trees on your property to when to take title as community property instead of joint tenancy. It encompasses from zoning to homesteads, and from condemnation to property taxes. In short, the 23 chapters cover the whole field of law.

What I most appreciated was the expanded materials on contracts, leases, deposit receipts, listing agreements and deeds of trust. The author went over most of these documents clause by clause, explaining when to use a certain clauses and when to avoid them. I'm using it as a great reference when buying and selling properties. My son found it handy in fighting a lease eviction. I think it's an exceptional book that should be on every investor's shelf, every broker's desk, and in every homeowner's bookcase.

This small book is an excellent introduction to St. Catherine of Siena and her writings. The letters she wrote contain practicle advice for anyone in any era. In the "Dialogue", Catherine asked questions of God and His answers and are truly profound! St. Catherine was uneducated so her words are simple and easy to understand. It is as if God is sitting down at the kitchen table and answering universal questions about why we were created and why we suffer so much. The "Dialogue" makes sense of so many seemingly unaswerable questions, that it can help anyone of any religion in their spiritual understanding of creation. I was so deeply affected by this book, that I had to read the "Dialogue" in it's entirety. A must for all spiritual seekers!

Catherine of Siena: Passion for the Truth Compassion for Humanity: Selected Spiritual Writings

Catherine Benincasa, named the "Doctor of the Church," lived during the fourteenth century in Italy. She was born in 1347 and grew up during a period almost identical to ours: one of war, famine, homelessness, confusion, social upheaval, crisis in the church, and a plague of unknown origin and having no known cure. Her theological writings applied to her own time, but also apply to our modern situation. We should be especially attentive to her role as a peacemaker and her writings that pertain to the subject of peace.

Catherine dedicated her life to becoming a "Mantellata" with the Dominican Order. Although she declined to move into the monastery near the church of St. Dominic in Siena, she dressed in their white tunic with a black mantle and followed the rules of the Dominican Order. Upon joining the order, she went home and confined herself to solitary prayer for a period of three years. She only ventured back into the world upon a command from God that to love him, she must love her neighbor. If she truly loved her neighbor, she must put forth an effort to help relieve their suffering.

This woman saw her role in life to be one of messenger to the people. She maintained that love of God and love of neighbor were synonymous and that you could not have one without the other. Likewise, they increased and decreased in equal increments. This was the basis for all her testimonials and teachings. She spent many years of her life as a peacemaker and tried to teach people that Jesus was the greatest proponent of peace through all history. To live a good Christian and walk in His footsteps, we must seek peace!

The writings in this book clearly demonstrate Catherine's intense love and passion for the Lord. Her words are exuberant and her writings intensely ecstatic, filled with passionate cries of servitude, friendship, and love. As you read them, you will become caught up in the spirit of worship. You will become engulfed in the flames of her passion for all things right and just. There are so many strong messages and lessons in this book. For example, Catherine explains how to love your neighbor, have charity, and be an obedient servant to the Lord.

These writings are equally as applicable today as they were during the fourteenth century. In our time of confusion, this is a book filled with logical answers that are simple to understand. It should be of great benefit to every reader.

Allen S. Rosenfeld's exhaustive 658-page Burley biography is like finding a rare diamond in a flea market;its length is justifiable to boxing fans fascinated by minute details of this Hall of Famer who never got a title shot.Burley, who fought from 1936-1951 retired with a record of 83-12-2 and Rosenfeld documents each of these fights, icluding an incredible seven-fight series with Holman Williams.Burley and Williams went 3-3-and their other fight ended when the two boxing geniuses were tossed out of the ring for a no-contest by a ref who just didn't appreciate greatness. But the late great Archie Moore did;he considered Eddie Booker(discussed in this book)and Burley, who dropped him four times in their 1944 fight to be the toughest guys he ever fought, including Rocky Marciano. In his preface,Rosenfeld cites the late Nat Fleischer, publisher of Ring and his 'Black Dynamite' series published in 1939 about black boxers from 1782-1938.Rosenfeld's Burley biography is a great addition to 'Black Dynamite'.

The crown that this tough, hard as nails fighter never garnered in the ring he can now wear symbolically through the efforts of the author who obviously spent years doing his homework and research. It is a must for any boxing buff's library. Rich in information and boxing lore.

This is a really beautiful book with recipes and helpful hints for organizing your shopping time and gifts lists and Cards to mail lists. It has a place for everything.

However, I would like to purchase one for my Mother-In-Law, who gave me mine, and cannot find one for herself. It would be a nice surprise, if I could buy one for her. The problem is, it lists, brand new for $16.99 and people want to sell their used ones for $44.00? How can you write in a used book and pay 3 times what it actually costs? Doesn't make any sense to me at all?

I'd love a response or help to locate a place to buy another copy of this book.

Thanks, Jean Murphy (jeanmu3157@aol.com)

Concise introduction to the problem of co-dependence
Helpful Votes: 39 out of 40 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-31
Schaef has written many books on the subject of addictive behavior, and I've read most of them. This one puts forth her basic philosophy (which is that dysfunctional, addictive behaviors are part & parcel of our culture) in a slender volume that's easy to pick up & reread. Especially interesting is her theory that co-dependence is encouraged in our schools and churches. She presents her case with lots of examples, and with the kind of passion it would be easy for the unconvinced to laugh at, but I personally think she speaks a truth that many people might find uncomfortable to face.

Cold realities from a warm heart
Helpful Votes: 52 out of 53 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-21
In a hundred pages Scaef does something truly remarkable. She confronts the self-serving and dangerous side of co-dependency yet maintains a nonjudgmental perspective. Many, many books, of course, discuss the dangers co-dependents present to themselves. This one goes beyond to look at the less comfortable topics of co-dependents' tendency toward manipulation, promotion of disease in others, martyrdom, dishonesty, and pathological self-centeredness. As a professional who grew up in a seriously alcoholic home, I wish that I had read this book years ago to see the pay-off I was getting from organizing my life around the pretense that I was other people's answers. But despite the harsh realities Schaef points out (and simply and compellingly demonstrates), I was left with a sense that I was not being shamed or judged and that I had the freedom to do better. This book takes more character to digest than most books on the subject, and I suspect that its writing took manifestly more character than one assisting people to continue seeing themselves as victims. I recommend it without qualification.

I used this book for an on-line class. The general ledger software was so helpful in reinforcing what the book teaches. I liked that many answers were given for the problems so you could see if you were making an error (sometimes the same one over and over!) so that you could figure out your mistake(s) and get to the correct answer. One of the best text books I have used.

I used this book in a class at Pasadena City College and it was quite helpful. I received an A in the course. I recommend that students who use this book look up the definition of the words since it is very helpful on the quizes and tests. To professors -- this book is sometimes ambiguous on some concepts and could do a better job at it, but overall it is a good textbook to use.

Older edition, but still good!

I bought this book for my crim law class, and when it arrived, I noticed I had accidentally bought this older 4th edition.(The latest and greatest 6th edition IS available from Amazon)

I still used it all semester because I was too lazy to return it, and my laziness was rewarded. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this 4th edition is pretty much the same book as the latest edition.
Compared to my classmate's 6th edition, there appears to be no differences in the material covered, and the only difference appeared to be the page numbering. For example, the material found on pg 200 would be found on 196, or vice versa. However, no material seems to be missing from the 4th edition. The chapter numbers and their corresponding subjects are consistent as well.

The book itself is overall a good textbook. I found it pretty easy to understand, and organized well. I liked the index of cases in the back, which was useful while writing papers.

I think I accidentally bought this book because I was blinded by the low price and quickly pulled the trigger without checking the edition numbers; I paid about $[...] including shipping. This is in contrast to the 6th edition, which is going for $[...] USED price here on Amazon.

If you need this book and want to save about $[...] I highly recommend getting this edition. If you have an anal professor or have a need for the latest and greatest, check out the 6th edition instead.

If you are a criminal justice major, this book is a must!!!

an excellent reference section in the back of the book. It provides definitions and a glossary. This book breaks up the sections of criminal law to give you individual overviews of each topic. Very detailed. Excellent BOOK!!
