A necessity for any small business owner

`How to Hire, Train, & Keep the Best Employees' is an excellent resource for all small business owners. This book contains all of the vital information you will need to achieve higher employee productivity, better time management for employees and managers, and decreased turnover for your company. Podmoroff's book will also teach you how to effectively advertise for a position, screen potential employees, and motivate employees enough to make them want to stay with your company.

All of the information in this book is extremely helpful, but I was most impressed by the samples and templates provided in the book and on the CD-ROM. The book includes sample forms for applications, interview sheets, and orientation outlines to demonstrate the guidelines that Podmoroff explains. The CD-ROM takes things one step further by providing you with printable human resource templates for applications, follow-up letters, and performance analysis forms. Between the book that teaches you all you need to know and the CD-ROM that puts the theories into action, you will be well on your way to running a more productive, less stressful business.

On a side note, I was also very happy to see that some of the profits from this book are donated to The Humane Society of the United States. Even if I didn't think that this book is the best of its kind--which I do--I would rather invest my money in the author and publishing company who support a good cause.

This is quite possibly the best book I have ever read about employee relations. It starts off with how to find the right candidate. How to advertise when there are openings, how to conduct the interview and many more helpful topics.

The best part, however, is on how to retain the best employees. It talks about communication problems and how they can inadvertently cause conflict and problems within a business. The author then spends considerable time addressing ways to convey a bad message -such as you screwed up- in a productive way so that the employee doesn't feel bombarded with criticism and can begin working towards a solution. Chapter 3 is a great reference even for communication within personal relationships.

The author then goes on to discuss affective leadership and team building. All of these things will go a long way to create a great and productive crew. I especially liked the discussion on proper employee training. The author emphasizes finding the right person to fit into an organization and then training that person on what is expected of them. All too often I've seen people just dumped into positions without even a job description. No one can possibly work effectively that way.

The book also comes along with a great CD-ROM which has templates for employee applications, interview questions, a confidentiality agreement and more.

Hire and Keep the Best

Almost all small business owners struggle with one universal task: hiring and keeping quality employees. Author Dianna Podmoroff has finally written a guidebook that offers expert guidance for hiring top-notch employees, sound advice for keeping them, and tips on follow-up training. From the first chapter on Successful Recruiting Strategies to the last chapter on Employee Retention Essentials this guide flexes its muscle with valuable, and more importantly, useful information. The accompanying CD-ROM offers a convenient source of information that can be quickly accessed and printed; including templates for professional employee applications, samples of follow-up letters, interview analysis and performance reviews. Two of the best features in this handy reference tool are the Leadership and Team-Building and Motivation chapters. Many hiring guides tend to gloss over, or even omit, one of the most important aspects of successful hiring: keeping, training and developing quality employees that have a vested interest in overall company success. Podmoroff outlines wonderful ideas, which more companies should implement, such as job sharing, flexible schedules, shared leave banks and phased retirement. Overall, this book is a must-have reference book that will ultimately give you the edge over your competition.

This book teaches you to do that, and then some.

"How to Hire, Train, & Keep The Best Employees." This book teaches you to do that, and then some. I was introduced to behavioral interviewing techniques that I can't wait to put into practice. I am confident that these techniques, along with a structured recruiting process - will paint an accurate portrait of job candidates. The mention of real-life, bizarre interview responses left me in stitches. The book also offers tips for welcoming and training new employees. I found the sample orientation schedule extremely helpful. The section on keeping employees was most insightful as it dealt with communication. I learned how to "own" my comments to avoid sounding judgmental. The book also teaches you to transform person-oriented comments into the problem-oriented comments that bring about better results. I had no idea that some of the things I say could have such an adverse affect on others. I definitely plan on using these tips in my professional and personal life. This book seems to be geared toward the Human Resources professional. It even comes with a CD of 75 HR forms. I found it to be applicable to anyone in business.

A Biblical Based Concise Guide

This book is focused on small group leaders, not pastors of small group ministries. It starts with Biblical goals for small groups. It then covers the basics of leading, understanding and knowing your group. It has practical guidance for questions, discussions and prayer times. Conflict resolution is also covered. Overall, it is a very good book for small group leaders seeking to learn and grow.

One of the best I have found!

McBride has written one of the most effective and useful books on small groups I have read; it is compact and easy to use. The chapter divisions make for quick review or if problem solving if you are already leading a small group.

Small groups are easier said than done. Often times, they are they seem to meet to meet without any defining purpose or covenant. McBride leads us pass the Bible study model, into building covenant groups of friendship and caring. McBride recognizes the biblical mandate to care for one another and how difficult that is to do in the typical evangelical church service- small groups are a very effective way in fulfilling that mandate.

The role of leadership is thoroughly discussed. The idea that small groups can be leaderless, or that leadership can be rotated amongst the group is soundly dismissed. Although he does not quote Maxwells dictum, it runs throughout his discussions on leadership: Everything rises or falls on leadership.

Any weaknesses? Not really. The author readily admits his fondness for lists. Do not get me wrong, I would rather read a list than a paragraph any day, but he borders on listmania. If you are considering establishing small groups in your church this book is must reading.

"Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God" (Ephesians 5:1-2)

As the verse above notes, we are called to imitate God. God in His very Trinitarian being lives in community. Christ lived in community during the years of His ministry. If nothing else, it would seem that we are called to live in community.

"How to Lead Small Groups" by Neal F. McBride is a "must have" resource for those seeking to live the Christian life in a community setting. This is a small but invaluable book.

Mr. McBride lays our clear, Biblical foundations for small group ministry. He states (and then demonstrates) that: "of all the potential ministry formats available to the local church, small groups have the greatest biblical support."

From this solid foundation, McBride then lays out a picture of a small group leader. The rest of the book is spent going over basic group dynamics as well as troubleshooting tips for commonly encountered problems.

I highly recommend "How to Lead Small Groups." It is one of the best small groups resources on the market.

It also helps you gauge your effectiveness as a small group leader -- and make adjustments accordingly.

I was required to use this text book in my Human Resource Management class for my MBA requirements. I do not have an HR background so a lot of the information presented in this book is new to me. The authors do a great job of presenting the material in an easy to understand manner. There are a lot of real life examples and case studies that are interesting to read and help to put the concepts in to perspective.

This book will be a great reference in my professional life. It has employment laws, recruitment strategies, training and placement strategies to name a few. This is a must read for any HR professional and it really brings to focus the need for a stronger HR presence in companies to help them stay competitive.

This is a textbook for advanced students of Human Resource Management, but even old hands in this field can gain a new insight on different topics which are very often neglected such as career development or separation and retention. Beside the discussion on different subjects the editors are bringing in comprehensive bibliography as well as discussion questions and a modern approach by using the web for additional exercises.

A useful framework for HR Measurement

Written for HR Professionals, this book will help you to measure the results of HR initiatives and communicate them effectively to executives. In the world of Human Resources, this book is well organized and useful. This book is practical and tactical, and contains interesting case studies and useful templates. Phillips adapts his ROI methodology for corporate training and applies it more generally to all Human Resources initiatives. Measuring so called "soft" subjects like training and HR has been a difficult and ongoing issue for practitioners who need to convince executives that their work contributes to the bottom line and adds value to the organization. Phillips provides a framework for measurement which, while not perfect, will give you results that executives can understand and help you build the case for why money spent on developing employees is not money thrown away.

Hard Measures Are The Cost Of Admission
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-29
As a former director or vice president of human resources in three different large companies over 14 years, I can't remember the number of times my bosses and peers challenged me to provide the business case for one hr program or another, either when developing a budget for the coming fiscal year, or defending a budget during hard times. For years, I lost more of those arguments than I won because I didn't always hold myself accountable to the same standards to which other functions were held, nor was I expected to. Over time, my staffs and I got better at measuring the impact of our strategies on various measures of organizational performance, and with that came budgetary "victories" and greater respect as business partners. That's what The Human Resources Scorecard is all about, and by reading and using the wisdom it contains, newcomers to the hr function and late adapters of hr measurement, can enjoy in relatively short order success and respect, which are the "price of admission" to the "executive suite". Having achieved that credibility, we then have the challenge of elevating our conversations with our bosses, peers and clients regarding the intangible dimensions of human and organizational soul, but that's another book in this series.

This is a comprehensive guide for evaluating any type of Human Resource Development (HRD) program. Even if you do not have a background in measurement and evaluation, you would be able to pick up this book and begin to understand the important aspects to consider in evaluation and how to plan and conduct an effective evaluation. The case studies in this book are valuable because they go into detail - you feel you have been a part of the program described. The authors are experienced practitioners who have alot to share and they do a terrific job providing the reader with the benefits of their experience.

I've gone through a lot of books for games for children, and this is one of the best. I think I've used it every Sunday. The games are simple to understand, and they actually go with a bible lesson, usually a particular verse. There are questions for reflection, and the set up and materials needed are easy. I usually have to modify the games a little to fit my children and my lesson, but I like the ideas. I also like the number of categories and themes the games are divided into! If you only want one book of games for children, get this one. It is the easiest to use, has the best ideas and games, and the best divisions- and it comes with a cd so you can put it on your computer and print stuff out and make copies. this is one of the best Group resources I own.

Absolutely fascinating book about the pioneers who went west, either for gold or a better life. Read most of it while camping in the Boundary Waters. Took author ten years of research. Was his doctoral dissertation. Pioneers were not as alone, nor Indians as bad, as history has made them. 1840 trip was much harder than 1860. Things really changed fast. One man drove 1500 turkeys west!

A Memorial to a Fine Historian

Review Date: 2003-08-29
The Plains Across is a remarkable book, a nearly unrevised dissertation that is nevertheless a thoroughly readable synthesis of the overland migration to the American West, 1840-1860. It's a pity that Unruh never had the chance to further rework this manuscript after so diligently honing his craft during the eight years of research and writing it took to complete his dissertation.

The least interesting chapters come first: long, pedestrian surveys of public opinion about the Trans-Mississippi West. More compelling is the chapter on emigrant-Indian interaction, which Unruh proves was considerably less violent and more mutually beneficial than the later myth of unremitting conflict suggests. Unruh's discussion of emigrant-Mormon relations is too apologetic for Mormon behavior, but the chapter nevertheless explains well why overlanders and Saints often came into conflict.

To my mind, the best chapters are the final ones that chronicle the significant assistance that overlanders received from the West Coast. Not only did earlier emigrants extend aid for its public relations value in the struggle to increase local populations, there was also a remarkable amount of pure humanitarian assistance, sometimes granted at considerable personal sacrifice. The last chapter, "The Overlanders in Historical Perspective," is a fine summary of the emigrant experience.

The Plains Across is now more than twenty-five years old, but it is still the standard history of the Trans-Mississippi migration. As one of Unruh's friends wrote, "It is sorrowful beyond expression that this book must stand as a posthumous memorial to [the author], rather than as the beginning of an outstanding professional career."

Par excellence

An exceptional in-depth study of the Oregon/California Emigrant Trail. Each chapter is thoroughly researched and written very well, with excerpts from the overlanders' journals and diaries, along with references from various newspapers throughout the country. The reader is first introduced to the political and social ramifications from the news media of the pros and cons of overland travel to Oregon and California. Next, Unruh unravels the "whys" as to the emigrants' desire to pursue such an endeavor, risking loss of everything, including possibly life itself. We also get a feel for how the overlanders got along with each other; their relations with Indians; the battles of overcoming hunger, thirst, cold, etc. There is also mention of private entrepreneurs along the trail who were trading and selling goods at exorbitant prices; the "white Indians" who were white men masqueraded as Indians taking advantage of the emigrants; the Mormon influence throughout the Salt Lake area, along with the "Winter Mormons" who were average non-Mormon emigrants wishing to overwinter in Salt Lake but subjected to cruel and unjust treatments. Then the federal goverment comes into the picture by improving roads, establishing forts along the way and implementing troops to guide and protect the overlanders to safety. We read detailed descriptions of how west coast assistance was a major factor in helping settlers make that final push into either Oregon or California. The book is totally amazing! A definite page turner. Even if one is not into Western U.S. history, this book will make one look at the hardships, perils and sacrifices these people overcame to establish a new life for themselves, families, friends and relatives.

This is a book for anyone who thought that all homeschoolers were perfect and could do anything without even trying. I loved it, because this was our first year homeschooling ( middle, elementary, and preschool ), and I thought that I wasn't "doing it right".

The advice is easy, and she is in a word: realistic. You won't feel like a failure on a bad day, or like you haven't done enough on a good one. She talks to you, not at you, and she also doesn't insult your intelligence if you don't completely agree with her.

There's a great section about special needs children and how reactions to them affect the entire family, and she does it by promoting empathy not manipulative guilt. In fact, the whole book is about making you feel guilt-free while educating your children, and raising your family ( no matter how little you get done in a day ).

This book is for the rest of us who don't have families that look like, or act like the ones on the cover of homeschooling magazines. The overall message of the book is: nobody's perfect.

I'm a newbie and slightly timid (will I do it right?) homeschooler. This book was very reassuring and helpful to me. The author has years and children's worth of experience to share with those of us who are contemplating homeschooling or just starting out, and I'm sure even a veteran homeschooler would gain insights from her book. I even learned a few "Heloise-type" hints for household management that I haven't known before! The book is easy to read and rich with information. The title says it all, great title, and the right audience should find this book easily.

I am what most would consider a "veteran" homeschooler - 10 years into it, but I always love learning new things! I truly enjoyed Barbara's book. The title is what caught my attention - I suffer from perfection-itis. If I can't do something perfectly, I usually try and avoid it - bad habit and one I am trying to break. Like my favorite mentor, Flylady, says: "Housework done incorrectly still blesses your family" - well, after reading Barbara's book, I realize that "Homeschooling done imperfectly still creates a bond with your children, is taylored to fit their needs, and is really probably better than the alternatives!" I especially was grateful for her insight into special needs homeschooling. Thank you, Barbara, for sharing your heart with us!

Tootson and Tesoro in Global Performance Measurement Systems and companion CD provide practical insights into the often misunderstood field of performance measurement. Many business people talk a lot about measuring the effect of training, consulting, and other expensive corporate initatives this book shows you in detail how to do it. I'd strongly recommend this book to anyone who has to sell "big ticket ideas" internally or externally and wants to differentiate themselves from the superficial. It's about time we had a business book that wasn't generic pablum.

As an 18 year Human Resource practitioner, both on the corporate and consulting side, I've had to sell "big ideas" in many companies to numerous business leaders. This book contains, under one cover, a complete, thorough and tested methodology to form the building blocks to not only sell the ideas, but also to measure the outcomes for even better future programs.

The tools provided in the CD are excellent and make the book a valuable resource that you'll find yourself refering to time and time again. I'd recommended this book to anyone serious about making an impact from a Human Resource perspective or any "soft science." A must read in today's competitive environment where companies don't have time to not get the most bang for the buck.

Review Date: 2000-06-17
The book is a great resource for practitioners and trainers (especially those who are just starting) who are familiarizing themselves with the scope, processes, and issues involved in planning, developing and implementing a performance measurement system. It provides a comprehensive overview of performance measurement and related terms as well as illustrates succintly the relationship between theory behind measuring performance in business and industry, and practice related to performance improvement. The four steps that the authors outlined as their cookbook approach exudes simplicity of ideas that anybody involved in training and development, HRD, etc., can relate. The use of a case throughout the book provides a common thread that grounds you, the reader, to reflection and application mode as you attempt to make sense of how the analysis tools can be used in your own practice. Definitely a good buy and a great addition to a consultant's library. For those who are thinking of consulting or working in areas involving performance improvement, the book is definitely something you need to have -- great "how-to" content, usable tools, simple layout and easy to read.

One of the best readings I have ever read. I wanted to buy one for all my friends who are having any sort of struggles. The book gives many scriptures to prove our place in Christ and to confess for our victory.

A book for anyone that is stuggling to know who they are in The Anointed and His Anointing will find themselves walking in a new dimension of a Word filled and anointed life by applying the principles laid out in this book With good practical outlines of scripture and as well as a confession for the Word when mixed with a hungry heart this book can change your life. The book is small enough to brimg with you and give you medtaions that will explode from within and change you, change circumstances and change life the way you know it. Bryan Murphy

This is the most important Hagin book you ever want to read.

This book has to be the best or most important book of all written from Hagin. To sum it up in a few words, if you do not know who you are in Christ, this book will point to the scriptures affirming your identity in Christ. It shows where in the scriptures, we can find reference to what we have through Jesus, who we are, and where we stand with Him. This book is must, if you want to be success for God. Warning, the references will lead you to do a lot of homework after you read it, so its not for the lazy or the "read once" crowd.
