My job frequently involves troubleshooting modem communications problems, and I've found that the information in Mr. Lewart's book valuble again and again. Not only is the book packed with valuble information, the author's writing style makes it easy to read too.

If you're expected to help people with their modems, The Ultimate Modem Handbook will answer all those questions that you've wondered about modems, but couldn't find the answers to by either reading modem manuals, surfing the Internet, or talking with other techie-people.

Thank You for writing this book Mr. Lewart! I wish that I had discovered your book six months ago.

Stan Schatt's ATM book is brilliant! I've made this required reading for everyone in my Global One Network Design & Management group - Mr. Schatt is a unique author with the ability to take very complex technical subjects and present them in easy to digest morsels.

I have also recommended his other books on LANs & Telecommunications Management to senior commercial & business managers, here in Europe who are looking for an easy to understand reference.

"Understanding ATM" is a must read for anyone in the telecomm business who plans to remain on the leading edge in the future!

It's the best book on AOL I've ever read!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-29
I have been an AOL member for two years. I first joined using Windows (then switched to the iMac version). I was seriously considering the possibility of switching to another online service, because of all the problems I had getting and staying connected, finding Web sites and so on.

I bought a couple of AOL books and finally chanced upon Mr. Steinberg's work on AOL 4.0. This book was the answer for me! It was easy to read, detailed, but clear and crisp. I followed his instructions on setting up AOL software and my modem. And now I'm able to enjoy the wonderful AOL experience. I've even kept my membership as a result.

I first heard of Gene Steinberg via his funny commentaries on the Craig Crossman radio show ("Computer America") and I'm happy I bought his books. He really knows his stuff and I recommend you read everything he writes. I'm now a fan!

NUMBER 1 BOOK ON ISDN
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-16
I could have saved many hours of work if I had read this book in 2001, when I installed an ISDN line. Mr. Bryce provides a detailed information packed book that covers every problem(and there are many)that a user will eventually stumple over and spend countless days to resolve the problem.

Despite the fact it was written in 1996, it is still provides current advice. Apparently, ISDN technology has not changed much in the past ten years.

Mr. Bryce explains every issue in detail and often provides several solutions to a single problem. This book paid for itself by explaining various problems I was having with attempting to link an ISDN line to a LAN network.

I checked Amazon for possible updates but did not find any. Perhaps, it is time for a sequel, if you are reading, Mr. Bryce.

Phillip Mahoney demonstrates the art of poetry
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-12
With the blast of a 12 guague point blank. His work comes straight off the street, undiluted by romanticism or the glorification of violence. Its an attempt to convey the life of a beat coop without cliche or comedy. Mahoneys poetry is a self defense reaction against the unbearable senslessness of suffering. He cannot save souls, he can only catch the bodies

Good things can come in small packages, and as the author I hope that this is true of my book. I have worked with virtual machines in the my classroom, professional life, and home environment for several years, and with this book I have been able to put a lot of what I have learned about the virtual computing environment into a compact resource that I hope you can use to get started with this exciting technology. The book covers the essential operation of 4 major virtualization products including VMware Workstation 6, VMware Server, Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005. Covering all these products in one place makes this book very unique. In addition, with the exception of VMware Workstation 6, all of the products are available as free downloads. (There is also a 30-day trial version of VMware Workstation 6 that you can play with.) This book will allow you to experiment with each of these products, learning which best product suits your needs. You may ask, "How can you cover so many products in such a small book?" The reason is because we stick to the basics. In addition, there are a lot basic concepts that are similar to each of the products, providing opportunities to condense the material by eliminating redundancy. For example, Chapter 1 provides an overview of virtual machine technology and the capabilities found in most of today's products. In addition, Chapter 1 provides information on how to download each product from the product vendor's Website. Chapter 2 covers VMware Workstation 6, VMware Server, and VMware Player. Since these products share many common options and windows, I was able to keep the chapter to a minimum by eliminating repetition. Chapter 3 covers Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007 and Virtual Server 2005. Again, both products have many similar functions that do not need repetition. In addition to covering product installation and configuration, each chapter contains steps on how to perform many essential virtual machine tasks. The book also provides a number of End of Chapter Projects to challenge your abilities. In the near future I also plan to post step-by-step hands-on activities to my Web site that will allow the reader to apply each task covered in the book to a sample virtual machine application. I know that I am bias, but I sincerely hope you will try the book, and that you will find it one of the best buys on the computer book market.

Best wishes to all...

As virtualization becomes an ever larger part of production data systems it is more important than ever that systems administrators, developers, managers, and executives understand the power and limitations of these products. With stronger, faster, and now multi-core proccessors modern servers are capable of much more work than most applications require. With servers running idle times of 80% companies are not really getting their money's worth out of their servers. Using virtualization technology helps provide acceptable services while minimizing the space, power, cooling, cabeling, and cost of server resources.

When I wrote my portions of this book I looked for real examples and asked myself questions I would want to know as someone installing and using Virtual Server 2005 R2. The screen shots and diagrams are straight off my computer running the actual product. This is not just a rehash of the Admin guide. I tried to give a useful answer to each option, checkbox, and radio button with an explaination of why and when to use each.

I use this prouct and other virtualization tools everyday and I hope you find this a useful book for both reference and learning to deploy virtual machines in a real world environment. I hope you find it useful.
