It is quite amazing that I appears to be the first person reviewing this book. Anyway, as a support engineer I have been combating ABENDs for some years now, and this is the first structured, organised material on this topic. It is so well written that reading it is resistance free. I have not been actively reading Novell's material after 3.12, and is amazed to find out that Novell has built such nice autorecovery features into 4.11 and beyond - if only Windows NT BSOD can be handled this effectively - or if only someone has written an equally effective book dealing with NT BSOD. Fighting ABEND is a spooky experience, and the whole affair could have degenerate into a cluster snafu that last many days. This book gives you a solid understanding of what is happening behind the scene, and thus you will not waste time ( many many hours ! ) looking for things that is not related. I seldom see authors who can write with such clarity on a topic that can potentially be very messy. It is the kind of mind that can see pattern in chaos. I hope that follow up with more works like this.

I have been and still am reading Official Netscape Communicator for Macintosh. It is absolutely the best book on Netscape because it is in simple easy English. I recommend it to all my friends and my fellow Macintosh Users. It has humor, wonderful illustrations, and clear & to-the-point tips on everything you need to know in the powerful Netscape. The accompany CD ROM is sensational and has great special effects. I put this book right up there next to Internet Starter Kit by Adam Engst. Two wonderful books you can not get along without!!

The model of semantics as set forth by Raksin and Nirenburg provides the best results yet seen. Ontological semantics avoids the pitfalls and computational contradictions of statistical NLP approaches. The authors admit that this is not a perfect solution but point the way towards future work.

THIS BOOK GIVES A COMPREHENSIVE IDEA REGARDING OPTICAL BURST SWITCING NETWORKS RIGHT FROM SCRATCH TO HIGHER END RESULTS. THE WAY THE UNDERSTANDING IN BOOK REGARDING THE NEED FOR MECHANISM TO CONTROL FALSE ALARM RATE FOR TCP LAYER DUE TO CONGESTION IS QUITE GOOD. ALL IN ALL, THIS BOOK IS A GOOD BUY FOR ANY WHO ARE INTERESTED IN OBS NETWORKS..

I am not going to give a long winded review. I just wanted to take a few minutes and express my gratitude to this author by reviewing his text. I am a programmer turned sales weasel! I needed a book that provided a good grounding in this field. I was blessed to find Bob Elsenpeter's text. Why? He has an intuitive approach. So many author's lose me due to style. Here is a perfect example of Bob's style. On page 104 Bob explains that Ethernet is ubiquitus but NOT that efficient due to collision avoidance requirements - and uses a maximum of 37% of raw wire speed. Bob goes on to decribe the advantages of ATM. Then Bob writes "If ATM is so much better than other network protocols, why aren't all networks running it?" (The answer, for those of you that care, is tolerance for latency.) But my point is that Bob intuitively understands exactly what his students are wondering. Which by itself is not so unique. However, what is unique is that Bob ACKNOWLEDGES his reader's thoughts more often than not. Thank you Bob for having such acute empathy. Don't stop writing!

a good engineering style book for engineers

I am an electrical engineering student with good matrix theory and linear algebra training. It makes the book very close (or dear) to me.
I like its style, very engineer oriented. There are examples, programs, even numbers, exercises. The theorems, equations, and important points are in tables and well numbered. If you enjoy reading user manual for your vacuum cleaner or technical document for programming languages, this book is like these in style. It is a well-written "user manual" for solving optimization problems.
Still the Chinese proverb: I hear, I forget. I see, I remeber. I do, I understand. This book gives you something to work on by yourself.
You may find the BASIC programs in the book a little bit out of date, if you are equipped with Mathematica or MATLAB. But the programs are still worth looking at, especially some can be helpful for understanding numerical analysis, too.
Here is an example from (Page. 39) Exercise 1.10 (using Mathematica)
simple substitution for solving this fixed point problem at x near 4 will diverge or fail to find one of the two fix points
f[x_]=0.5 Exp[0.5 x]
NestList[f, 4., 10]
Reap[FindRoot[f[x] == x, {x, 10}, StepMonitor :> Sow[x]]]

John Moy has caputured the whole OSPF implementation in a graphical easy to read format. Technically without equal and the simulation program only emphasises his knowledge.
Don't waste time reading other OSPF books this is the real thing.

This book is aimed at providing both the sellers and buyers with the information they need to handle the new concepts. It is written at a fairly technical, but fairly high level. It is aimed at understanding the concepts, the basic structure of the evolving communications world, not at the level of how to program a router.
At this time, a lot of the material in this book is experimental in nature rather than the final products that will emerge in the near future.
With 25 years of experience with the design, engineering, marketing and technology leverage of enterprise and service provider internetworks, the author works as a a senior network architect consulting with Bell South, Qwest and EDS.
